Vons - Very cool set up... - Grocery Near Me - San Diego, California

I did not do any shopping in this store... I ran in to use the restroom before a 5K I was doing down the street... This store is split in half. I have never seen that before. The side with the alcohol and some other items, I do not believe had any cash registers. It was very bizarre. The center was outside and had things like drinks and pumpkins and a few other items. Entrances to both halves of the store were off this middle area. The store was very clean... I just was a little in awe of it being split. The mens room was very clean... When you have to go, you have to go... and the womens was occupied. One of the employees was chatting with me while I waited for my friend, and she was very nice, and everyone said hi and smiled that we passed. read more

At first i thought the layout of this store was so strange, fresh items, bakery, and produce on one side, then you exit to an outdoors area and enter a separate building to dry goods, alcohol, cookies, crackers, and frozen items. The dry goods side is noticeably warmer. After thinking about it, its genius actually, they are cutting their utility cost way down, the things that need to be cold or cool are in one side at a much cooler temperature confined in a smaller area. While the things that don't need to be kept cool are kept in a separate building, and the freezers which produce lots of heat are separated from the fresh side so it's not counter productive to the the cooling of the other building. Strange layout but like Kermit the Frog says, "It's not easy being green" What i thought was cool was the grind it yourself peanut butter station, you can choose different types of peanuts (honey roasted, salted, plain, chocolate) then grind it into peanut butter! cool stuff. lots of parking and an extra star for being green! read more

I still haven't been much more than a lookie-loo at this location since it's not my neighborhood..but the fact that I'm being a lookie-loo at a VONS says a lot. I decided to stroll into the produce side of the 2 buildings and saw some really cool things! They have baby pink lady apples (pink lady is my fav!),a cool island bakery to look at all the bright, delicious-looking, and obviously pure evil desserts...and....and....a NUT BAR! another round island station with all these different nuts to scoop from, plus a bunch of fudge. And then on the other side is a nut paste machine of some sorts to make fresh peanut butter and other nut butters. Also, they have containers with different pre-made nut paste in a display next to it. There was a honey roast peanut butter that looked rather tasty. Dude, this is no regular Vons. I think it's very cool to go there and take advantage of the great Vons prices and still get some fancy-smancy peanut butter to boot! read more

Had a flu vaccine appointment this afternoon. Waited exactly 45 minutes (with 2 young children with me) despite it not being busy and me having an appointment and arriving on time. After 30 mins I went to ask what was happening and was told that it "takes some time to prepare the vaccine". Hmmm.... The pharmacist administering the vaccine did a poor job, my arm bled a lot and she said "oh wow, it's really bleeding" and she let it pour all down my arm and on my shirt while she searched around for a wipe. She then told me that I was "having a reaction" but that "I'd be okay". Moral of story: 1) do not take your children to watch you have a vaccine and 2) do not get vaccines at Liberty Station Von's. I recently had my COVID vaccine at CVS on Pt Loma Blvd and it was a great experience. Waited no more than 5 mins after my appointment time and the pharmacist did an excellent job with the vaccine. read more

I'm a student at the highschool near this vons, I decided to get a chicken meal for lunch one time and I was nervous and lost since I had no idea how to get it (students have to purchase deli items differently), I went to the deli and asked the lady working their if I could have the chicken meal, she asked "how much (wings)" which I did not hear at all since she was wearing a mask and it was very loud around us, plus her accent mixed with the muffling from the mask made it very confusing. I politely asked her what she said, she repeated it a little louder, and I could tell from her tone she was irritated, but it was the same thing, I couldn't hear her at all. At this point I was just an awkward mess, I asked again and the lady dramatically pulls down her mask, gives me an eye roll, sighs and tells me AGAIN in a snarky tone. I'm sorry lady but it's not my fault I can't hear you in a crowded store full of other students. I finally got my chicken meal after a while and promptly never went back after that experience. Just because you work around kids all day, doesn't mean you are allowed to treat us like garbage, have some respect. And if you don't like working around those people then quit or just be polite, it's not hard. read more

Okay-I can see by reading the previous Yelps on this particular Von's that one either LOVES or HATES this Von's. I think i will take the middle ground and I will explain WHY! The old Von's on the corner of Rosecrans and Nimitz Blvd. was an under-sized, inefficient eyesore that nevertheless was very convenient and beloved as a Point Loma fixture for decades. Even though the parking was lousy and the store didn't carry a full array of products, it still evoked love because of it's past history as a De Falco's grocery in a previous incarnation. When Liberty Station opened up, Von's made the move over-which was understandable! They made it into a pretentious frou-frou store full of exotic booze and bizarre cheeses to impress the snobby socialites of Point Loma. That split into 2 separate parts is what BUGS me-I don't understand the concept because the main check-out area is on one end, and if you forget something on the other side-it becomes a BIG HASSLE to go get it. Furthermore, the deli is atrocious! There were zit-faced high school kids reading directions to make sandwiches the day I was there and it was taking them forever! Now I am all for employing the youth of our community-in fact I am trying to get my teen-aged son a job, BUT AT A GOURMET DELI? Here you got Von's pushing weird olives and smoked gouda goat cheese among kids that ain't got a clue! It really is wonderful to have that outdoor area and I do appreciate the vast array of groceries at this Von's, but really-I must admit-the only time I venture in is when I am down at The Rock Church and need something! I will take the newly spiffed up Von's on Midway Drive or the one over in Pacific Beach that always has hot guys shopping there over this Liberty Station Von's any day. This place is funky. It is two buildings with a courtyard in the middle. One side is produce, deli, milk, Starbucks and bakery. The other side is frozen, pharmacy, alcohol w/ a wine tasting and all the other stuff plus the check out. Yes there is NO self check out and the lines do get long but if you go after 8:00 pm there is no-one there so that means NO LINES AT CHECK OUT. Do to the funky layout it did take me a few visits to get use to it but more I am a pro. read more

Came here last Saturday to buy some flowers for my mother in laws birthday, from the moment we stepped in(my wife and 3 year old daughter) I felt like we were being watched , as we were looking at the flowers one of the security guards kept hovering by us as if we were going to steal something he kept picking up the same glass cup and outing it down(kinda obvious he was watching us) we decided no to make a big fuzz about it but I think it was just uncalled for we paid for the flowers and left , it was a pretty bad experience being that I felt like we were being racially profiled being that mostly everyone in there was white and we were Mexican We will definetly not be coming back to this Vons read more

Very interesting given the store is cut in half, giving off the impression it is two separate stores rather than one. One side is the produce. One side is the remaining non-perishable items and beverages, and with the cashier. Going from one side of the store to another almost makes you feel guilty, as if you're leaving the store without paying. Ample options for all necessities. read more

as every other review mentions, the setup is bizarre yet it makes a typical grocery store feel a bit more quaint and lovely. in that case, I enjoyed shopping here. I came early Saturday morning and was one of the only people in the entire store; relaxing. There was no line to check out and I got in and out no problem. the prices are a different story; I can't believe how high they are compared to the many other stores I have shopped at while living in San Diego. I am spoiled by the commissary, but still! I felt as though Von's were digging right into my pocket. I bought only the necessities to avoid paying the extra dollar or two per item. read more

Visited this location last week and the customer service was through the roof. I usually come here on the weekends while walking with my Cashier ( didn't catch her name) was very nice and helpful. This Vons is one of the closest to my house so it's really convenient to visit, but it is not my favorite. When I lived in PB, I was a die hard Vons shopper. I loved going to Vons for all of my purchases because I thought it had the best selection and quality. However, I don't love this Vons because it doesn't always have the freshest items. I have noticed that expiration dates are often too close to make a purchase worth it. There have been so many times that I've driven here to find a specific item only to find that if I get the item, it will expire within a week. For example, I wanted honey mustard salad dressing and all of theirs were set to expire within the week. Their egg selection typically also doesn't last as long as others for some reason. I'm not sure why this is. Maybe it's a less popular location to shop at, which is the cause? I've been really curious but I do not know why. It has a unique layout. There are two sides to the Vons with an outdoor space connecting the two. On one side, they have the fresh produce as well as the bakery, seafood counter and deli. On the other side that you check out at, there is the frozen foods section as well as canned pantry items. At the end of the day, it's a grocery store. You get what you need and you get out! read more

This has been one of my favorite Vons for a very long time. Mikey, Charles, Mary, and now Lorelei have always made me feel welcomed. They all make amazing sandwiches and burritos. This is a rather nice grocery store for the area and it had precisely what we were seeking at the time: breakfast, soda pop and whatnot while vacationing in the area and preparing for a cruise. I found it rather fascinating that this store location spans multiple buildings with a sort of courtyard in the centre. I was pretty happy with this and we got great customer service from the cashier when we paid as well. This was wonderful and walking distance from our hotel which was marvelous as well. read more

This review is specifically for the Supervisor Myyke. Totally unprofessional to his employees every time I come into this location. I normally use self checkout. Got back to my car and realized 5 items rang up full price on my receipt. I walked back in and explained it to the self checkout clerk she said no problem take it to register #3. Got to that register and supervisor Myyke had a huge melt down and couldn't understand the problem. I explained and he didn't want to hear it and said this is the price of the item I can't do anything about it?! and I said I understand but on the shelf and in the app they're on sale. So should I return and repurchase to get sale price? and he said I still don't understand what you're talking about with a total condescending attitude instead of even having someone verify the prices. I get it's busy there but there wasn't a line at all. He told me to stop talking and to just get out and leave. I was shaking. His hands were waving in the air too. Then he made some accusatory remark that he should've photocopied my receipt. For what sir? So ridiculous and totally unprofessional. The more I tried to remedy the more he lost his cool in front of other customers and employees as though he had a right to treat me that way. The prices were wrong regardless of what they rung up as and he could've double checked but would rather argue with me with his misogynist banter. read more

I wanted to give a good review. Every time I go there I have trouble with the pricing. It is either wrong not updated or the app didn't work. It has happened so many times. There are time were I just let it go because I am too busy to correct it. I have also picked up and bought expired products. I don't notice until it is to late already at home. Ahhh... I started to wonder I cannot be the only one. I have complained to the manager to no avail. staff is always nice and helpful. Thats the only good thing. Probably one of the most uncomfortable Vons to shop at. Between the two sides of the store where one side is for groceries and the other for other things...and people eye you suspiciously when you cross over, then there is the fact that you can only check out on the other side, and to top it all off there is no cell phone reception inside the store and if there is it is very spotty. The store also seems understaffed, it is hard to find someone to answer your questions. read more

Well, we only ended up here because Trader Joe's didn't have a few grocery list items, but it's nice to see that the Liberty Station planners included a "big box" supermarket knowing that the smaller markets usually don't offer everything. The layout, eh, it's odd. You walk in through a center outdoor area, which appears to be disorganized and chaotic directing you either left or right depending on your needs. Looking for some produce, we went left. Once inside you feel like you've left the hustle and bustle as it's very calm since the left side doesn't have any cash registers ringing or much of a crowd. We grabbed our goods and crossed the common area into the righthand side of the store. It's there where we completed our purchase at the very low-key cashiers stations. Seriously, this location seems to be the most relaxed Von's that I've ever been to! Hell, I'll take it! Besides that sense of calm, it's just a grocery store. After shopping religiously at Von's for 35 years the incredibly rude employees at this location and their midway location made me realize I don't need to give my money to a company that employs people who I am clearly inconveniencing by shopping in their stores. Vons: It's a 4-letter word. I won't speak about the impeccable layout of the Produce section. I refuse to comment on the wide selection of tantalizing pastries and breads from their bakery. And, I don't wanna even mention the amazing food layout from their deli. This particular Vons is amazing enough to live in! But I have a bone to pick with Vons and it's another 4-letter word: s-o-u-p. Tuscan Tomato Bisque to be exact. Bovina sancta is that a damn good soup! My tongue fell in love the minute the creamy soup touched my lips. The best way to get it is served piping hot from their soup station. French bread is good, but the sourdough is even tastier. On a cold cloudy day, get yourself a nice heaping bowl of Tuscan tomato bisque with a fresh Vons sourdough straight from the bakery. It's my favorite comfort food, next to mac-n-cheese. What's in it? Butternut squash, tomato, basil, garlic, onion, heavy cream and pepper. Oooh child, lemme tell you I LOVE this soup! This Vons store is really nice! Its clean,very nicely stocked,and well maintained. It tripped me out the first time I went here because the store is divided into two complete but different sections. One section is for dry goods, ie. non perishables and the other part is where you will find the meat,cheese,milk,etc and any other perishable items.Basically its like 2 stores.You have to leave one part of the store and walk directly across the walkway to access the other part of the store. One good thing about shopping here is the neighborhood. I dont have to worry about getting molested in the parking lot by drunks,druggies,junkies,and bums like when Im in Nasty City. I guess some have complained about the parking due to the church crowd but I learned years ago to never do your shopping when everybody else does.I go early on the weekdays when nobodies around! I do find it a lil annoying tho when everytime I go through the line that the cashiers are always hitting me up for a donation for some cause.I dont mind giving but I'll do it on my own terms and I dont need Von's offering up some sales pitch in the check out line. I have avoided shopping here in the past due to thier prices.After all,a place like this will have high overhead and the costs will have to be passed on down to the consumers.Using coupons for items that are already on sale coupled with our Vons card we are able to routinely purchase $80+ worth of groceries here for only around $15 or so. What the hell are you reading a review on Vons for? It's the same as every other Vons in the city, even the county. Just kidding - this Vons has a very interesting concept. Upon walking into the store, you will see on your left half the store and on your right, the other half of the store. So quickly, in your head, run through your checklist. Is there anything fresh that you need? Like milk, bread, eggs, butter, cheese, vegetables, or meat? Then enter door number 1 on the left. If you need anything else, like frozen Haagen Daaz, then door number 2 on your right is the door for you. So separate your list so that each item is with its own kind, and then head on over to the door right for you. But all the checkout aisles are on the right. So you'll be entering door number 2 regardless of whatever you decide you need :) read more

It's a rather odd setup for a grocer, but I've always had pretty good experiences here. There are two sections that are split up by a courtyard which makes it a little difficult to navigate so be prepared to spend a tad more time here than your normal trip to the store. They've got everything you could ask for in terms of produce and the deli section has lots of good grub that's made fresh so if you don't feel like cooking its easy to pick up some dinner for your home. Also notable is the large selection of liquor, which is always a plus! The staff has been friendly and quirky to me each trip and usually make me laugh when I hit the checkout. The fact that I am writing a review about a freaking grocery store should let you know that this one is the bees knees. Honestly, don't people just shop at the place closest to their house? Grocery stores all sell the same stuff right? Well, yeah... I mean when I want to pick up some hot dogs or milk, I walk over to the good old appletree in OB (despite the HotCha salsa becoming an endangered species), but don't you want to enjoy your shopping experience? If so, cruise on over to this fine establishment. Don't get me wrong, if you live in, say El Centro, it's probably not worth the trip and your ice cream is going to melt before you get back to that hellhole of a city (no offense), but if you live somewhere in the 9210x (that is my fancy way of saying 92101 through 92109 zip codes) it should become your primary shopping place. As mentioned in the other reviews the property is bisected by and open air entrance which has flowers, fresh produce, and conflicted people like myself trying to decided which side to go to first. For produce, dairy, and meat turn left, for booze and nachos turn right... But don't be concerned that this is meant to segregate the healthy type from the TV dinner crowd; it is not and you are free to cross the border as often as you like... check out is on the right side near the cookies if you get lost. Nut Bar? Yes! with peanut butter maker Butcher wearing white coat? Damn Straight Crazy Cheese Bar? With a gay guy who works at it! Johnnie Walker Blue Label in a crazy liquor room with an airlock? OF COURSE! Piss poor parking with hobos in the parking lot? NOT A CHANCE! They even prohibit the jesus freaks from the church next store from using the huge parking lot. This is my favorite grocery store, ever, of all time. Period. Those who say the layout is inefficient, I wholeheartedly disagree. Instead of having to walk the whole length of a store to get produce, meat, dairy, and breads (consequently passing by all the crap that I really don't need, but by-god the packaging makes me THINK I need it), I can get all of it on the left side of the split layout! I think we're all so programmed to think that having to walk the whole length of a store to get our food staples is normal, when in reality, it's a tactic to force you into seeing more product, and hopefully buy more product. And, in case you haven't noticed, it's pretty clear the developers did this to keep the integrity and historic look to the building. I'm very proud of McMillan for not just tearing down the buildings and creating something modern. They've done something quite unique here. With that said, the left side of the store is my favorite. I don't have much reason to go to the right side, except for shower stuff and the like. The deli is amazing, and has a hell of a lot more selection than the Vons I was going to previously in College Area. In general the place has a very warm, inviting feel to it. I've been to so many industrialized grocery stores where I feel like I'm part of a cattle drive, that coming here is such a relief. There are some unique things about this Vons that others have mentioned... the homemade peanut butter, the honey, neither of which I've tried, but how cool is it that we have that option. Awesome. I HAVE to say something about the half-size shopping carts. Someone here mentioned they're for the elderly, which could be, but I'm 25 and a single woman, and OH MY GOD these are the BEST things any grocery store could have. Personally, I hate having to push around a large, cumbersome cart when i know I'm not going to even come close to filling it, but the hand-baskets NEVER suffice when I have to get things like orange juice or milk. These are the perfect sized carts! I call them the Singleton Carts. They are my saving grace. And hello, the flowers outside in the courtyard? So pretty! So inviting. All in all this Vons has made my weekly shopping excursions FAR less stressful and much more of a fun, rewarding experience. And if you can make grocery shopping fun, seriously... you're on a fast track to a much happier life. P.S. - If you love old photos, on the produce side, at the left checkout from the entrance, there's a huge print of an old black and white photo from the 40s of all the naval trainees in front of the old building. how cool is this store? there was a DJ playing music in the courtyard on sunday. i'm pretty sure it was because it was labor day weekend but it was totally unexpected in a good way. The store it self is spotless and well organized but I also find it odd that the store is divided into two separate stores. left side is produce, bakery,deli, starbucks. the right side is liquor, dry goods, frozen foods. we picked up some wine, snacks, sobe water from the right side of the store. overall, the employees are super friendly and the most liveliest grocery stores that I've been to. read more

What I dont like about this Vons is that it's not as ghetto compared to the North Park one. It doesn't smell in the parking lot, and I don't get approached by homeless people. I like that about North Park. It adds character and charm I like the layout but its confusing. Where is the deli ?? Fresh and refrigerated items are on one side of the store, to get to the other side you have to walk through a courtyard... -__- but its ok. I can always use the exercise. Yesterday I was in the not so fresh side, could not find jalapenos so instead i got bell peppers, went to the other side to get hoisin sauce, but forgot to get condensed milk had to jog all the way back, but because the registers were closed on the fresh side I had to walk backwards to the other side to check out and on the way, all of these homeless looking people kept getting in my way and I wanted to throw candy at them but Halloween was already over and I wasnt near the bread aisle but thats ok because I found where the pasta and anchovies were , right next to the baby wipes ! Full disclosure: I used to work for Vons back in high school and I must say, despite the crappy baggers, Vons as a whole really has upped their game when it comes to customer service... this location in particular. The layout of the store is unusual and can be a pain in the butt sometimes when you remember at the checkout that you need something from dairy, which is on the other side... *outside* on the other side. But it's not the end of the world.... unless it's raining. I like the new look with the parkay floors and the Bristol Farms vibe, too. I also like the shorty shopping carts they have. They're more compact for the smaller aisles so you're not ramming into everyone. it also allows you to carry less food, like a handbasket, but with heavier stuff so you don't have to schlepp. Docked a star because I hate being asked if I want to donate to Easter Seals (or Breast Cancer or March of Dimes or Your Aunt Edna) *every* time I checkout. There should be some kind of tally on your Vonsclub card that shows when you've donated so you don't have to be a jerk and say "no". It's not that I don't want to donate, but they don't ask for a set amount -- they just leave it hanging and they actually *ask* you instead of having it show up in the pay terminal. For example, Petsmart asks when you slide your debit/credit card if you want to donate a $1 to animal shelters -- a small set amount which most people are willing to give, including me). But, with more and more stores asking for donations in these economic times, those $1 and $5 donations add up and it's awkward to say "no" to something like charity when you're put on the spot. (My tip? just say "I already did, thanks.") I also hate how shoddy courtesy clerking has gotten (baggers). Baggers (and checkers, too!) just throw everything in the bags all pell-mell, make them really heavy, put chemicals in with ice cream, etc. I'm all for saving bags and going reusable, but making things way too heavy or compromising my Ben & Jerry's with bleach is unacceptable. What really makes this location stand out to me, though, is the really attentive staff. I can't pause for a *second* without being asked if I need help finding anything. Someone on their way to a break asked me how I was and if she could be of assistance when I was scanning the soy milk shelves. Another woman helped me get some sugar-free creamer that was wedged in the back of the shelf when I couldn't reach it. I took a moment to survey the pre-cut veggies and not one, but two produce guys asked if they could recommend some stuff in season and one guy even sliced open a squash I'd never tried just so I could taste it... unsolicited! If I wasn't so pleased with actual *service*, I might go as far as saying it's almost *too* much service. Sometimes you're just browsing for something, you know? Weird setup. It is split into two different buildings with a courtyard in between. Produce and deli on one side and all the other stuff on the other. Unique but very weird. Typical grocery prices here but very clean store inside and out. They have everything you would expect in a grocery store and they seemed pretty stocked when I was here. Must have been a slow day for business I guess because there were only about 6 other customers inside and this was around 1730 (5:30 p.m. for you non-military folks). I will agree with Courtney that this is the awesomest Vons I've ever shopped at too. Of course, I do have some reservations when considering it for a 5-star rating: But shopping on the 4th of July has its major disadvantages. The place is a mad house. The planning of the building and parking areas looks good on paper, but in actual practice, parking your car is the first obstacle you must overcome in the Vons parking lot. Once you're done with that, you'll have to navigate through the many entrances of the store. It looks beautiful, and unlike any grocery store I've ever been to, but the isles are narrow, barely able to squeeze a few carts through--though perhaps it was because of the 4th of July human traffic. What's worst than shopping at a Vons with 1000 people all trying to buy ice? Going to Vons on Independence Day trying to buy ice with your mom. Apparently, my mother hates Vons because of their high prices. She made this abundantly clear when I picked up the bag of ice (7 lbs was $2.59), then she made it clear to the check out girl. Then she made it double clear that she hated Vons while we were walking out the door, just so everyone else could feel her pain. Overall, the new Vons is pretty cool looking, but on a busy day, I'd stay away. 3-Stars because my mom convinced me to hate Vons too because of the high markups for ice. read more

Sandwiches, sandwiches, sandwiches. Though I generally prefer to support neighborhood delis more than a mega-chain like Vons, I cannot ignore the fact that their sandwiches are freakin' awesome. Props where props deserved. Plus, this particular Vons is new and pretty impressive. It's expensive, though... so get your sandwich here, then go to Trader Joe's next door for affordable groceries. read more

This is a pretty cool Vons. They've managed to split up the perishable and non-perishables by way of a nice little courtyard full of produce and flowers. It's a cool concept, though a little confusing, since you have to check out twice, I guess. The wine and liquor section is amazing, complete with a temperature controlled room for top shelf and super premium liquors and wines: the room even has a little chandelier. They also usurped most of the employees from the old Rosecrans Vons, which is both good and bad. Overall it's a nice store, but still a Vons. I think it's a little pricey and the concept is new (kinda have to see it for yourself) but it's obvious that Vons is going to try to take over some of Whole Foods pull, but if they keep stores looking as nice as this one, more power too them. read more
