Typical Vons, it's my neighboring one so I come here alot. Sometimes stop by to get sandwiches freshly made here in the deli. Usually just do the daily grocery routine and have had nothing but an easy experience. I like it a lot because it has a self checkout unlike the one up the street on Governor. Stuff goes so much faster at night when lanes get jammed up with a person at the register. The beer selection here is actually pretty damn good! You'll have more problem choosing than not having a choice. read more

Avoid the lines at 8:30pm on a weeknight. That seems to be the prime late night dinner or after dinner snack crowd. I wish they had self service check out. Despite all that, I've found everything that I've wanted. Maybe they could stock up on more Asian food, like a better variety of noodles. They also carry Haribo gummy colas! read more

This store doesn't have a very good selection, but is less expensive then Raplphs. However, it is completely understaffed being that it is incredibly busy. Went there today on the way to spinning just to grab a bottle of water. There was only one checker with 15 people waiting. I shop here often but the lines are always long and i even had someone who worked there walk right by me and did not respond when I said Hello. The worker then went down the isle and walked by my girlfriend who said Hello only to have the person not say hello to her. I enjoy going tot his Vons grocery store. I live closer to Ralph's but I drive to Vons because of the better service. However, the lunch meat at the deli is not the greatest. The other meat like seafood and steak is delicious. Also, the bakery is so amazing! I go about every other day just for the fresh sourdough bread! So good! Overall I think Vons is great! read more

I love this store. The employees, for the most part, are always solicitous and friendly. You never get checked out without them mentioning you by name and asking if you need help to the car. Well this is the closest Von's to me so sometimes my husband & I run into here for last minute dinner ideas. Well the last 2 times we went to the seafood / meat department there has been no one working in the department. After numerous pages, I finally locate the manager who tells me there is no one working there after 5 & so they will try to find someone to help me. Then once the guy shows up, he is clueless as to the sale that was running on shrimp & over charges me. This has happened twice now. read more

The Vons chain are usually about the same... except for THIS one. 1) It's closer to a 7-11 than Vons. They carry much less merchandise, especially meat. Went to buy some ribs for the BBQ, they don't even carry it in their small meat counter. Every other Von's in the world carries pork ribs. 2) All other Vons has $5 Friday says, often on cooked chicken. I went in to get the $5 deal on fried chicken, was told by the employees "We never cook chicken on Fridays because they are often on sale". That's some great logic, bait-and-switch your customers and refuse to offer what's been listed in your ads. At least they were honest about it. Drive to ANY other Vons, avoid this one. read more

Store is clean, staff is helpful, checkout fast, the store is laid out great and has just about everything one needs. So what's is the problem with this store? Convenient and clean. Can useful online coupon for saving money. Sometimes some goods can be cheaper than Ralph's but it is smaller than Ralph's so if you want to buy a lot of different things, it is better to Ralph's which is located in La Jolla Village Square. read more

I really hate leaving bad reviews but I feel it's necessary considering I've had the same experience over and over again at this specific location. I shop here about twice a week and every single time I grab something from the produce area its moldy! I can't tell you how many times I have had my finger smoosh into a rotten sweet potato, tomato, onion, etc. It never fails. And it's never just a one off situation...I proceed to look through the rest of the bunch and majority of the selection is moldy! Then I tell myself, ok maybe someone called out sick today and try again afew days later....same issue! I've been shopping here for about 5 years and can tell you this has been an issue for quite some time now. I've even debated on taking photos every time and logging the dates so that I can show a manager. I used to be a vons employee back in my high school days and I can't believe the store manager hasn't caught onto this yet. You really might want to consider doing daily walks with your produce team to ensure the quality goes back up to regular standards. Also, I do agree with the other reviews that this specific Vons does not give off the normal "vons" customer service when shopping here. The employees literally act like you are in their way while they are restocking the shelves/produce and never say "How are you" or "Can I help you find anything". I just get to hear them gossop to eachother. It's also extremely annoying that every single day they have people out front harassing you to donate money or sign a petition. This Von's is horrible. I live across the street and actually drive to another grocery store to shop. Since I do live across the street, every now and then I do go over for some last minute item. I usually regret it. Nine times out of ten I leave frazzled and irritated. The long lines are no joke. If you go after about 3pm don't be surprised to wait and wait. Just tonight I needed Drano. Twenty minutes in line to buy Drano. Jeez. Management fail. (The staff is friendly enough just need someone that knows how to run the show.) Go somewhere else. Go the Von's on Governor. I'm not one to typically write negative reviews and I'm sure Vons won't care because they are a grocery store and it won't hurt them, so my intention is to just review and inform. First of all, the staff at this store are so rude. 75% of the employees seem irritated and inconvenienced by having to "deal with people." It's probably due to poor leadership/management. For example, the deli department, I arrived to a small line at 7:35pm, I just wanted some of the ready made chicken tenders from the hot bar. The deli employee serving the person in front of me huffed and puffed and said "were closed! What do you want?" She gave them their order...the entire time while serving them the employee never made eye contact with me or said anything to me (probably hoping I would hear her telling the others they they were closed and just walk away) but a) I knew the deli wasn't closing at 7:35 b) since I just wanted chicken tenders I know my order would only take 30 seconds to fill. So when it was my turn in line I quickly and nicely said I just wanted some of the chicken and she/the employee said "were closed!!" I asked, looking at the clock on the wall, "what time does the deli close?- I just want some of the chicken quickly" she raised her voice and replied "were closed when the lights go out!" (But only half of the lights were out) I then asked "so you're not going to sell me any of that chicken?" She replied "I am that's why I'm asking you what you want!" (Which she hadn't). All in all it took her 30 seconds to help me. (15 seconds on top arguing about closing time.). Also that same Deli employee a few weeks prior took 23 MINUTES to make one sandwich, without ever saying to me once "I'll be right with you" or "what can I get started for you?" while just standing around with her hand on the toaster oven door waiting for a sandwich to toast. I've experience the same level of service from the seafood department, what around for ever for the guy to look up from the back, as a line grows. It's like the employees just have a bad taste about the customers. Lastly, why am I NEVER given the monopoly tickets??? No joke I'm owed like 45 tickets. I forget to ask when I'm there, then I'm reminded when I get home and see my my mostly empty monopoly board. So frustrating. The most pleasant people I have dealt with are the ladies at the Starbucks, maybe they could teach the rest. read more

Just a thought...if you are going to have a deli counter that makes sandwiches...A) have it fully staffed at lunctime B) have staff that actually understands how to make a sandwich and also comprehends the english language C) have the ingredients to make the offered sandwiches available for sandwich assembly..... Overprice your food and then spend none of it on employees, so everybody is overworked, the shelves are understocked, the produce is half-rotten, and the lines are long. Grocery stores can be heartless places, squeezing every last labor dime, but this place is pure exploitation, overcharging compared even to other vons, and giving nothing back to employees, leaving the store effectively empty. I've never seen more than two people on the floor. I've never seen a shittier produce section. Every employee except the manager looks worked to the bone. I've only come here when I want to avoid the Ralph's/Trader Joes parking hellhole but in order to perform my basic human decency, I'm never coming back. Pay your employees and hire enough workers to staff the store, you corrupt, exploitative jerks. read more

This Vons is adequate, but that's about it. There are few things that disappoint me about Southern California, but HEB of Texas is something I genuinely miss when I'm in California. Fruit is usually decent quality and variety at this Vons, but it's always hard to find good quality greens and veggies. The salad greens often look limp/about to expire and don't seem locally sourced. They don't have as good variety and quality of vegetables like I'm used to at HEB. They usually carry most of the processed sort of products that come in a box or can etc, but they really lack in fresh baked goods, fresh produce, and unique items. It's not uncommon to not be able to find a brand or something in particular you are looking for here because the selection is very limited compared to something like HEB. In addition, Vons has a reward club card. I've never been a fan of the concept. It's a tiny inconvenience having to deal with it every time you come to the grocery store if you want the discounts. The grocery stores definitely frustrate me a bit in California. It's not uncommon that we have to pick something up at both at Trader Joe's and then Vons or Ralphs. If you are someone with very basic food needs then this Vons might cut it, but if your looking for fresh food you might have to head elsewhere. Prices are also more expensive then I'm used to at HEB in Texas and Vons is more expensive than Trader Joes. I feel like we get very little for our money when we shop here and it's not like we buy steak or anything like that. Someone needs to come up with a more one stop shop grocery store like HEB. read more

Often times people rate a company as good or best. In this case I wish to rate a grocery store as "outstanding." Again, in this case, the store, Vons is very good, but it's the people who make it truly outstanding. I continue to be very much impressed with one of the checkers. Her name is Rose Chan. Rose has a wonderful way of moving us through her line quickly, accurately and making each and everyone of us feel really special with her great big smile. She also takes the time wipe off the conveyor, so I will add she makes us feel her work area is tidy and clean. Who would not want to go through her line? We all do. This VONS (& others, I'm sure) has a soup station with 4 choices of rotating soups and free saltines & oyster crackers. Soups range in sizes & price from $2.50 - $3.99. The soup is pretty good too! I had to take the time to tell you what a great customer service experience I received from your store-in particular from the manager Matthew and your bookkeeper Charlotte. A few weeks ago I purchased about a month and a half's worth of dog food since there was a great price on it. After about three days of feeding him, it became apparent that the new food wasn't settling well and we were not going to continue feeding him the canned food. Unfortunately, I did not have my receipt for the purchase so I was hoping for any sort of exchange. I first arrived on a busy evening and after explaining the situation to Matthew, he said that he would have to ask the bookkeeper to look up my information to verify my purchase in order to help me. Since I was getting worried about the possibility of being stuck with dog food my dog couldn't eat, I came in the following day and was pleasantly greeted by Charlotte who verified she got my info but would have to follow up Saturday. I received a call this morning from Matthew saying that Charlotte found my info and verified my purchase and that he would be able to take care of the return. I arrived at the store and was immediately helped by both of them at the counter. Not only did he give me a full refund for the cans I still had, he also gave me a refund for the food that my dog had already eaten. When I said he didn't have to, he insisted because it made him sick and he also said it was the right thing to do. I must say it is a real breath of fresh air to get that level of customer service and something that is so rare to find these days. While this may seem like a little thing it really completely made my day and I look forward to my next shopping visit. Thank you again! read more

Purchased meat, went bad two days later, purchased lettuce that had bugs (it happens), but to top it all off had one of the rudest cashiers of all time, Rose. Went back two weeks later, just for beer, and had an arrogant, rude cashier who wore a manager name tag. A little human decency goes a long way, never going back! read more

The grocery store smells. The staff is completely incompetent. Trying to communicate basic things is completely a waste of your time. There are a few good employees, and they also hire a lot of really nice people with special needs who ... by the way... are not for the most part the ones who are incompetent and with attitudes. They have been nice to me every time I have come. Don't go to the deli department because they're the worst. I asked for a sandwich once and it was like I was asking for complicated brain surgery. I go here a lot for a few bright spots. And none of them have to do with the grocery: 1) The Starbucks inside is super convenient and is often much faster than stopping at an actual Starbucks. Doughnuts are conveniently located near the coffee, which is good. The Starbucks staff is knowledgeable and can even ring up the doughnut for you :) Unfortunately, the customers aren't as smart as the typical Bucks clientele and stare moronically at the menu. So if there is a long line ... skip it. 2) I recently transferred my prescription to Vons, and it is soooooo nice not having to wait in line at CVS with a bunch of confused people and stressed out pharmacists. If you need a prescription, this is the place to go. The pharmacist seems competent enough and no one seems to know this pharmacy exists. He's nice too. I am a bit concerned he doesn't get enough practice, but ask your doctor too for multiple prescriptions if you are concerned. read more

The lines here can be horrendous at certain times with two aisles open, and the self-scanner lines go back 1/2 of the width of the store.
