If you are looking for a fabulous downtown vibe, then give Voo Lounge a look. Outstanding crafted cocktails with rotating, seasonal-ish specialties along with plenty of other standbys await you! Found in the lower area of the historic Muehlebach Hotel, Voo has a prohibition, speakeasy feel about it. A lot of the original wood and flooring has been preserved and restored and the member liquor cabinetry along the wall near the entrance lets you know that this is a place with style. Sample from the drink menu, unless you wish only a glass of wine or other. The handcrafted, exclusively designed cocktails come to order and match the Voo's chill vibe. It's also a piano bar and there is some purdy fair talent that rolls through. I can't remember the young man's name but he was like a human karaoke machine, kicking out tunes from Burt Bacharach to Marcy Playground and any tempo & style within. Another visit gave us a chance to see a small jazz combo accompany the pianist for a taste of old Kansas City. So cool! Parking is downtown, which is to say, well, figure it out. But the drinks are worth the wait and maybe the walk and the atmosphere and service is top-shelf, just like a lot of the liquor that flows at Voo. read more

A long time ago there used to be a bar in this space, which was part of the old Hotel Muehlebach. It was THE place to be. Harry Truman had a special table. Ernest Hemingway hung out here. Truman Capote did, too. Then it all went away - Downtown Kansas City fell out of favor and the building sat empty for a few decades. Now it's back and it's banking on the locals' love of Kansas City's decadent past. A 1920s-inspired old time long bar takes up most of the upper part of the split level space. A few tables and booths make up the remainder of the room. I like the live entertainment - though the sound tends to bounce around and make it a little hard to hold a conversation. I also like the drink menu - which features a little something for everybody. read more

I walked in for a cocktail and was instantly intrigued by the lady laying on the piano singing... he voice was great, the music was wonderful and the venue was spot-on! They have traditional cocktails, but it's not a craft cocktail joint. Wine list is also typical for a Marriott bar as well, but the venue is nothing like other typical Marriotts! I was so excited for this place to open, made a reservation for one of the first weekdays they opened. Had no idea what to expect upon arrival. Firstly, the interior is chic, moody, and gives the impression that it would be a great date night spot - from the dim lighting, to well-dressed bartenders, and of course a pianist. The cocktails are aesthetically pleasing, and innovative. They nailed the aesthetic aspect for sure! But... there were a few things that shifted my experience, and left me a bit confused. When you walk through the rotating front doors for the first time it would be incredible to feel as though you've gone back in time to the former lounge "rendezvous", or to capture the essence and history behind the building. Instead, it felt more like a bachelorette party, or howl at the moon. The pianist is talented, 100%, but the music just did not fit the vibe of the space. From bohemian rhapsody, to rap god, and everything in between. The selections were all over the place, and sometimes hard to follow or fully get into. The prices are high!! Which you would expect, to an extent. We started off with the garden state and room for dessert. They are stunning drinks, and the ingredients are so appealing. I'd order the garden state again, but unfortunately, pass on the room for dessert. The toasted orange blossom meringue (sounds delicious, right??) made it difficult to enjoy the actual drink, whenever I tried to take a sip the meringue floated in one piece to wherever the glass was tilted, it was too sticky and thick to get to any of the liquid - like the texture of a melted marshmallow. We ordered another round, The fruit salad fizz and so close, so far. They were tasty, and I really enjoyed the banana flavor in so close, so far - sweet but not overwhelming. Whereas, the fruit salad fizz was bubbly and refreshing, nothing crazy! Overall, I think it's good to know what to expect when visiting. If you're looking for a romantic or intimate and classic date night location, I wouldn't necessarily say this is the spot to be. But rather a place to top off your night. Good for a group of friends, a bday celebration, or even a bachelorette outing. Come here, if you're in the mood to sing along and listen to lively, upbeat singing/piano. Drinks are on the pricier side, $15-$19 each. Kudos to the owners, I know they worked hard to get this place up and running, and that shines through in the curated menu and beautiful interior. I'd like to come back with some girlfriends on a night out, now that I have a better idea of the atmosphere. read more

Sometimes I get mad when I go somewhere I love that I'm just now visiting for the first time. This happened at Voo Lounge. I went with a group on a Wednesday evening and it was pretty empty. The incredible pianist, Will had us entertained the whole night. We played name that tune and did so poorly but it was so fun. The food was also delicious. Recently opened in downtown Kansas City, Voo Lounge is a piano and cocktail bar attached to the Marriott hotel, with its own entrance on Baltimore Ave. Upon entering through the revolving door, you'll be greeted by a display of members' lockers on the right, while the bar is strategically located along the left wall. Tables are set up around the pianos where live music takes place, creating a perfect ambiance. We decided to sit at the bar and were impressed by the beautiful back bar with a great selection of spirits. T.J. was behind the bar and made me a perfectly balanced negroni that I had been craving. The crowd was lively and engaged in great conversations, while the resident pianist, Will O'keefe, set the perfect tone for the lounge. The live music served as a perfect backdrop for those engaged in conversations, and the center of the show for those enjoying a delicious libation. We had a fabulous experience here! Drinks are on the pricer side but well worth it. Each drink we ordered was amazing! I loved the overall vibe on the inside. Even though you are street level, it feels like you are in a speakeasy. They also have a pianist perform and he was great! He did an awesome job of reading the room. While we were not going to Hamilton, many of the other customers were and the pianist performed a few songs from Hamilton which everyone loved. They were singing with him and it just created a fun atmosphere. We went for pre dinner drinks so we didn't get any of the snacks but they looked good! The menu is rather small for food so it is definitely a light bite kind of place. The drink menu is also small but it is a fully stocked bar and they can make you anything! We will definitely be back and maybe next time grab some food. KC needs more places like this so I am glad to see this place is being put to good use downtown. read more

Don't let the exterior decor fool you - the interior of Voo has a classy, cozy feel. We opted not to use the valet and instead parked at a nearby garage, which was easily walkable. I would definitely recommend making reservations instead of walk-ins. The service was wonderful and staff had no problem answering our various questions regarding the menu. While the specialty cocktails were unique and often included fun accoutrements (blueberry whipped cream in an edible cone, fresh honeycomb, etc.), I did feel they were on the pricier side for the overall quantity and taste. Expect to pay at least $15 per specialty beverage. We ordered the Rendezvous, Fruit Salad Fizz (my favorite), Smoke Alarm, and Queen Bee. We also ordered the Cajun Deviled Eggs which were unfortunately flavorless, as well as the Fig & Pancetta Flatbread, which was well-balanced and delicious. The resident pianist was energetic and played a nice variety of songs, offering an entertaining backdrop for the evening. The piano IS loud, but that is to be expected with a piano bar! Overall, we were glad to have tried Voo. Although it may not be our "go-to", it is a fun date night/special occasion spot. read more

This super cool lounge opened in February and I really enjoyed it. They had a Cosmo special that was a little too sweet for me, but when I ordered an Old fashion, it was spot on! There was an 80s theme tonight and the staff were all dressed up for the theme. Staff were fun to talk to at the bar and ambience was awesome. The building itself is historic and loved it. There is apparently an awesome piano guy who was off for the first time since they opened, so we will come back tomorrow night to see him. This was a Thursday night we came in at 5:00 and it was super easy to get a place at the bar. Highly recommend this place for a couple of drinks! read more

These guys just added a microphone to the outside of their building. So now neighbors like myself get to listen to a pianist scream into the microphone all night. I get that it's probably to draw in customers. But it's BLAIRING LOUD. And it doesn't help that someone is constantly shouting into the mic. I wish they would either lower the volume to a reasonable volume or just get rid of the whole thing. Literally no need to hear them from the street at all. And I especially don't want to hear them from inside my apartment when my family is trying to sleep. Voo, please respect your neighbors. read more

The Voo lounge is a super quaint place for drinks and small plates. However, I will tell you to read the fine print on any reservations. I'm a huge fan of one of the artists that was playing tonight and was super excited to see him. I rarely get out as I work two jobs. I made a point to make sure I got to see him, only to be kicked out of our table (which by the way was super close to the next table). I wasn't aware of the 1 1/2 hour policy and was VERY disappointed. Read the fine print on your reservation!!! The food was good, we only ordered wine..not the expensive novelty drinks. The waitress was nice...a little slow...but very friendly. The atmosphere was wonderful. My only complaint was not being able to see the one artist I had been wanting to see forever the whole night. Please be more transparent with your expectations on reservations! read more

My first experience at Voo Lounge was incredible! There is a limited amount of seating so the vibe is quite intimate. The appetizers are delicious but the deviled eggs could definitely come with more for the price you pay. When the piano man plays, the energy in the bar is so fun and people start to sing along. Had a reservation for five however was seated at a four top, server got us an odd chair but rest of evening only four glasses of water, four plates, flatbread app cut in four pieces, four napkins seeing the pattern? More style than substance. Maybe they'll work the kinks out, so here they are: -The valet wasn't there. Hostess said she'd help track him down, but ten minutes later still hadn't. I went back outside to wait for the valet. -We were seated at the bar, which is beautiful and the bartender was super friendly. However the bar stools were really unstable -- uncomfortably so. Felt like you were about to fall everytime you moved. This was the primary thing that negatively affected the experience -- you couldn't turn to look at the other person without the chair tilting to a jarring degree. -Drink menu is thoughtful, but drinks themselves were watered down. -Halfway through the reservation, the hostess went running at full speed through the place. I don't know who she was running from or what she was running to, but it was disconcerting nonetheless All told we stayed about an hour (valet had to bring to the car back about 20 minutes after they finally got it parked ). Wasn't thrilled with our experience. Stopped in after dinner on a Saturday evening, made a reservation through their site just in case. Good thing we did as they weren't seating walk ins upon arrival. We requested the 2 seats at the bar but they said those were reserved- although the seats remained empty through our entire visit. The seating isn't desirable if you are wanting an intimate evening. The tables are very close together so there is no opportunity for the private conversation and it was very difficult to get in and out of your table without disturbing/bumping the others next to you. The service was VERY slow. We sat for more than 10 minutes before being greeted. The only reason we did stay is because the table next to us who over heard our comments said they "will come eventually and the live music is worth the wait". The music was about the only positive part of our experience. With all the craft cocktail bars in KC this is the very bottom of our list. read more

A group of my friends and I visited this lounge last summer excited to be in a new piano bar at the Muehlbach. It was not crowded and the food was good as was the service. We only ordered wine so didn't have any of their specialty drinks. The piano player was excellent but loud given the acoustics of the establishment. I would have come back numerous times were it not for the horrible management. I left a light sweater in my chair when we departed that I didn't discover until I arrived home that evening. I placed at least six phone calls over the period of a week leaving messages on every call to ask about my sweater. I never received one response letting me know if they found or didn't find it. On my last message, I assured the Voo Lounge that it would be my final call and would also be the last time I ever visited their establishment. I would think a responsible business who was trying to attract and keep customers would give me the common courtesy of at least a short response. read more
