It was Thirsty Thursday and my group of friends chose The Brass Monkey for our sipping spot. This speak, easy type bar is cozy, and absolutely beautifully designed. It is tucked away and unnoticeable from the outside until you see a simple red door. Finding it (which isn't hard) is a treat in of itself. I love the cocktail menu with it's unique design featuring their signature cocktail and a mystery offering which ends with a take home treat for the adventurous which is an amazing touch. I won't spoil it with all the details but when you go check out the entire cocktail menu and you will find the option. I had the Saz Arrack- Rye whiskey, bitters, Swedish punch ( I have no idea what that is), orange liqueur and absinthe spritz. Flavor notes are : spiced, complex and stiff. In other words, if you like the flavor profile of a old fashion or a Manhattan who would love this cocktail. I also tried their Brass Monkey cocktail as well. I would recommend one substitution of orange juice in that drink rather than the orange beverage they currently use. Our service was amazing and helpful with our selections. Went in for a Friday night, and even though we got in early (definitely get a reservation!), it started filling up before we left! The inside is very cozy and you can tell the staff all know what they're doing. My friends and I tried a couple of rounds of drinks, which were all delicious. For one of my rounds, I tried the mystery Alchemy selection where you choose two cards from a deck--it was a cool way to get a new drink I didn't expect with the surprise of the cutest polar bear cup in the world! The outside does not even come close to how awesome it is on the inside. Cozy vibes and absolutely beautiful. Highly suggest making a reservation because the space is small and can fill up fast. I ordered the Alchemist for the first round and I was amazed that the bartender could pull out a drink that tasted that good with the cards I pulled. The only downside is that if you really like your drink, it was a one time thing, so you can't order the same one again. It's not a big space, which is perfect for a speakeasy, but I would recommend a reservation if you're headed there on a weekend night. All the seats were taken by the time we left. We had excellent service and enjoyed hearing our server, Kirk, talk about the many cocktail offerings as well as the Alchemist Experience! Would recommend the Alchemist Experience if you're feeling adventurous! My friend and I each went that route and ended up with very different cocktails. Went to the Brass Monkey last night with some friends. On the whole, it was a really good experience. Firstly, it really has great ambience and vibe. The decor is really cozy and the Christmas decorations they had up were really cute and festive. We arrived quite early for our reservation (be sure to get those) because dinner had taken less time than we expected so we waited for a while in their little entryway. Not ideal, but the door guy was very friendly. Just a note about the reservation system: you have to put a card down to hold a reservation and if you have to cancel in less than 24 hours, they charge you $10 per person. I get why they have to do that but like things happen and I was not happy with the prospect of potentially paying $40 if an emergency came up. I get not showing up and charging at that point but 24 hours just feels a little prohibitive. Anyway, we were able to be seated at our reservation time. We really enjoyed looking at the menu. The artwork added some whimsy to the experience. There was one waitress working and one bartender. So service was pretty slow. One of the party ordered a Gremlin B Gone. My fiancé got the Shanky's gold, which he said tasted like a werther's original with passionfruit, which he meant as a compliment. He had wanted to get the humble yam, but they were out of It. And I got the cherry moon. I really liked mine, though I wish I had stirred it rather than drinking as it arrived because then I just drank all the cream and then the liquor at the bottom was extremely strong. But I would definitely order again. The fourth member of our party did the alchemist. The doorman tried to say that it was really good value, and maybe it was just because it was served in such a small glass. It was basically a juice glass. But it did not feel like a good value for $21 and it just didn't feel like it was particularly creative or like a mixologist type drink because it was literally in this tiny glass with a twist of orange. He didn't hate the drink, but it was a smaller serving than any of the rest of us got and like $6 more. The doorman had said that the drink is a good value because they use more expensive liquor and it takes more time for the bartenders to figure out what to make, so it slows down their pacing. I can appreciate that, but when all they've done is pour two liquors in a glass with a twist of orange, it's hard to really make that excuse, so really they need to get a little bit more creative with the cocktails that come from the alchemist experience. All that is to say, I would definitely go back to the brass monkey because the vibes were great, but it would've been nice if they'd had a second bartender to get things moving along. It is a pretty small space, not sure it holds more than 40 people so definitely get reservations. read more

The server was friendly and the ambiance was quite cool! The doorkeeper just let us in though, which isn't very speakeasy like, sadly. I think it would be more cool if the doorkeeper challenged you a bit to "find" the entrance or if there was a password. read more

To be honest I had really high hopes for this place. Location is fine, ambience is good, but they're not able to handle the throughput. Every patrons drinks took a minimum of 25-30+ minutes. Twice our drinks got lost and had to be remade, 25 minutes each time, zero apology or even explanation for the delay. Flavor was good but nothing spectacular. Hoping they figure out the flow or it's going to be a flash in the pan. I'd suggest Hey Hey Club, Swordfish Toms, or Drastic Measures for good drinks and exceptional service. read more

I've had the pleasure of visiting the brass monkey twice now& I highly recommend it! Let's start with all the positives: The staff is lovely, every server is kind, helpful and efficient. And the Door staff is amazing as well, very helpful. The ambience is unique, definitely a speakeasy vibe. I love the red door, all the decor and walking downstairs. The bathrooms are awesome! I've checked out the one upstairs and downstairs- they are a must see! The cocktails are amazing, since I've been there twice I've tried four different cocktails, and each one the server described to a T- and are very enjoyable. The menu is charming, I love reading about the unique cocktails. The only area of opportunity is the smell: a strong stench of body odor. Twice I've been there and the smell is so foul. It's hard to breathe. I don't think it's a person, maybe it's something that's been cooked? Or-lingering in from an air vent from outside? Or maybe an animal died in the walls or ceiling? I have no idea, but it's the worst body odor smell I've ever experienced. My first visit was in late September, and much to my surprise, the smell was still there last night. I'll definitely be back though, this place is a must see! I love bringing my friends visiting from out of town here. read more

This place is cool. Nice in the inside. Small but not stupid small like one in KC I can think of. Pretty dark. The staff is friendly. The music was a touch loud but was pretty balanced- enough you could hear it, it blurred out the conversations at the next table but you could still hear each other- important! The drinks were good. Not amazing. I just felt compared to monarch bar and other places trying to make really creative type drinks, these weren't quite as balanced as they could be and so the flavors weren't what I would have expected. The drinks I had were just lacking a bit in how the ingredients were balanced. For example, the Yuzu vodka drink that also had St. Germaine only tasted like the stg, which can be cloying if not balanced right. The dirty martini was goodThe washed vodka made it smooth. My husband said the margarita was really good. They can also customize a drink based on your tastes. This place will be successful for sure. There are a couple other drinks I'd like to try so I'll be back eventually. I won't run back. read more
