Recently dined here with some friends and at first noticed how small the restaurant was, but it was cutely themed nautical style. There was a limited menu but i'm a huge fan of oysters so I was sold. We ordered a bunch of different items and all were great! I've never had Bone Marrow before, and I probably wouldn't again lol but everyone else I was with seemed to really enjoy it and have had it before. The texture is gelatin and it freaked me out haha. Come during happy hour the prices are great on oysters and drinks. Voyager has an interior so full of kitsch charm, it would make Steve Zissou blush. Walking into the restaurant we were greeted by several members of the staff and seated promptly to enjoy our happy hour cocktails and oysters. To preface; I've eaten my fair share of oysters and consider myself a decent authority. With that said, the happy hour selection ($1/shell) were amongst the absolute best I've ever eaten. Our cocktails were also flawlessly executed and fairly inventive. My wife and I split a few menu items (chilled shrimp, tomato/melon breads, lamb tartare & fisherman's stew). Every single dish was fantastic, and I made sure to let our waitress know. The service she provided, by-the-way, also exceptional, always on the spot to clear courses, chat about the dishes and keep our cocktails full. Basically, I was floored. The quality, flavor profiles and freshness of ingredients were all impeccable. I overheard the head chef planning out the new menu for tomorrow, and we're already making plans to go back this week! Where do I begin? The food is exceptional. The bone marrow and mussels are the best dish I've had in the past year. I'm no oysters connoisseur, but I haven't had broiled oysters anywhere else and my expectation has been set high. The crab pasta is quite spicy but in my opinion there is a lack of seasoning at most restaurants. The best part of my experience was our server Julie. She was well informed, attentive and kind. It was about a 50 minute wait for food in between the appetizer and dinner course. We were so bored and most of the appetizer sized shareable dishes were about 4 bites of food tops. Ironically the table next to us who only waited 20 minutes for food got a complimentary dish and an apology for the wait. The food is okay overall. A really bad interpretation on steak tartare (don't mess with a good French classic with a sugared granola topping in the place of crusty bread). The fish was okay. We had the monkfish and the daily special of trout. The best dish was the ceviche, but it was 3.5 bites. We left with a $76 bill two hours later and had to go get a second meal to get full. I would never go back, it's a pretty horrendous experience and incompetency is pretty rampant in an identity-driven hipster place. read more

Not too Happy regarding "Happy Hour' The hour(s) is devoid of any driink discount and the oysters were so small, the discount was ephemeral at best. Happy Hours lubcricate customers. Three ounce pours at full retail disappoints. There was so much ice in the mixed drink, the equivalent of three sips polished it off. Ceviche was good, chowder was excellent. Baked oysters' country ham cozy was a friggin joke- so thin you could see through it. Green lipped mussels good. Service good. A bit of a challenge to find Voyager - made more difficult by the festival that was blocking streets in Ferndale the day we chose to visit. Our efforts were rewarded by an interesting meal. Decor was somewhat austere, but not uncomfortable. Glad to see the owner on premises, making sure dishes were expedited, and checking with patrons to see that they were satisfied. So many tempting items on the menu that we went a bit overboard on our Voyager voyage. Started with Hushpuppies. They were served with honey butter - oddly, it was hard to taste the honey in the butter. Also got the Simple Salad, which was very nice. The Shrimp Terrine - an open-face sandwich with shrimp topped with minced asparagus, was enjoyable, but: the sauce threatened to overwhelm the dish. Could have done with a lighter touch. The whitefish sandwich, ordered in part because it had been so lavishly praised by other Yelpers, also suffered from a superabundance of aioli sauce. Co-diner got the seafood stew: this dish came close to hitting it out of the park. One problem: the bread that accompanied the stew was slathered with some sort of mayonnaise or oil-based sauce, so much so that it couldn't even be scraped off. Luckily, the owner passed by our table, and was more than willing to provide a different piece of bread, that came in handy to sop up the stew. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable. All in all, an enjoyable experience, and one that we would be willing to repeat. read more

I grew up in Yorktown, Va., right on the Chesapeake Bay, so perhaps I'm being overly critical, or maybe my expectations were too high, but this place stinks. My wife and I were excited to try Voyager. We read about it in Esquire magazine as a Top 20 "Best New Restaurant." High praise. And a seafood place, at that! We both love seafood. And a nationally-rated restaurant right here at home?!? We secured a baby sitter and made plans for that Saturday! I Googled the restaurant. Peeked at its Instagram. Wow, the chili crab spaghetti was so enticing. It looked and sounded delish. I was so eager to try it that I may have skipped lunch just to build an appetite. The chili crab spaghetti is the Ivanka Trump of seafood pasta. Eye-catching. Intriguing. You quickly dive in. Yet when you come out on the other side, you're left feeling cold, and distraught, with a mouthful of alkaline and a numbness on your tongue, like you just licked the prongs of a Duracell 9-volt. The hushpuppies. OK, so I'm from the South, which -- admittedly -- leaves a lot to be desired, but one of the things we get right is food that will give you cardiac disease. And these hushpuppies are blander than a Catholic Mass. Improved if you use the accompanying lemon, but I'm not sure how many dogs in Greenville, N.C. you'd actually get to stop barking before training them to squeeze citrus with their paws. Now, the oysters. Look, the supply chain to get these here is impressive, likely because there are very few links in it. I appreciate the hustle. And, I know that seasons change, and sizes may vary, but these suckers were small. And, perhaps they are fine for the landlocked Detroit-metro area, but stacked up against New Orleans or Charleston, or, hell, even Richmond, Va., these guys are playing Double-A baseball at best. So, temper your expectations if you want to give Voyager a shot. In an effort of fairness, the staff was attentive and nice. And the vibe inside the Cracker Jack box of a restaurant is quite cool. But, the dishes disappoint, and what you're left with at the end of the meal is a $100 bill and a desire to grab a Coney Dog and beer to salvage the Saturday night. read more

So delicious! I felt everything I tried at Voyager was a new flavor to the Metro Detroit food scene. The hush puppies were spectacular, the oysters were the best quality I've had in Detroit ever, the tartar inspired starters were top notch in freshness and flavor. Voyager is one of Ferndale's hidden gems. The restaurant is very small, I would recommend reservations. The all the food is extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. This place is amazing. The oysters are of the highest quality, no matter raw, fried or broiled. Our server, Julie, had to be the best part of our experience. She was incredibly knowledgable and on all facets of the menu, and was able to provide great recommendations based on what we we wanted. We were never in need of anything, with our water glasses constantly refilled and our cocktails replaced on time. I highly recommend the mussels and marrow. It was one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. There was not one disappointing part of this experience, and it's safe to say I will be back many times over. read more

Food is awesome! My boyfriend and I are huge oyster fans so we were super excited when Voyager opened. The place is quite small so I don't recommend dining here in a large group but heck! Try it! The drink menu is not big but what they do have is good. I'm giving this place 5 stars for their rotating menu, selection of oysters, and awesome staff. I've tried the spicy crab pasta to the razor clams to all preparations of oysters. Even the steak is amazing here. A great gem for oyster lovers! read more

Walked in at 5:00 it smelled so bad! A combination of fried fish & I don't know what else. So stuffy & left with my hair & clothes smelling. Ughhhh big turn off. After trying almost all of the new "new trendy" Detroit / Ferndale restaurants with overpriced "creative junk" full of butter, bone marrow, Brussel sprouts, and millennial dropouts for waitstaff who are all programmer to answer "let me check" on any food related question you ask - this one was a pleasant surprise! Great happy hour/dinner at Voyager. Didn't get the featured happy hour drink because a mai tai isn't exactly what I want in the winter months. But I did get the happy hour oysters - very good but $2/oyster isn't really a great deal. I do get that it takes more money to import these though. The drink I had was delicious - the scuttlebutt. Mussel toast was amazing - very different than any previous mussel dish I've had but it worked so well! Will be coming back just for that dish. Best seafood in town! We loved the chowder, oysters, mahi, whitefish sandwich (best we've ever had), ceviche, pickled seafood, peel and eat shrimp- and those are the only dishes we've had a chance to try. Came here on a Friday night and had no issue getting a table. The ambiance is very cool! Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and a huge help in crafting our menu for the evening. Being an oyster virgin I thought "when in Rome" and my fiancé and I each tried an oyster. They were extremely fresh. Everything was coursed out very well and we were never waiting too long. This is a great edition to the ferndale dining scene. This is what I would consider a smaller restaurant with a long bar seating area and about 15-20 tables. Happy hour is a good time to go from 4-6pm but I will say it starts getting full around 5:30 on a Friday evening. Happy hour, at present time, is only $1 oysters for the house choice of one east coast and one west coast -- NOT ALL oysters (what I originally though prior to going in). Currently no drinks specials. Our waitress said that that may be something they'll start addressing closer to the summer. Anyway, the food itself is solid. We got the hush puppies, shrimp toast, chili crab spaghetti, ceviche, and mahi. I'd say the main downside was the hush puppies as the melted butter on them was a little too much with the grease from frying. But other than that, the remaining dishes were pretty good. We got the pineapppe upside down cake for dessert which was delicious and definitely worth ordering. It's soooo small and soooo loud and trying way too hard to be hip. The food was very good, but portions were very small and it was quite expensive. I will say the waitress was very accommodating and happily provided me with juice to water down my drink which was way too strong (I hate to be that person but I wasn't trying to get wasted at dinner). Went on a Tue for happy hour and by 5pm they were out of the west coast oysters. Happy hour started at 4 and there was only about 25 customers inside. The waitstaff were busy cleaning glasses, texting on their phones and talking to each other which made service slow and challenging. The oysters are amazing, clean and easy to eat. As a neighborhood spot I recommend this place for the food, hope they can get their service to match one day soon as I've been there twice and both times service has NOT been their strong suit. read more

I really like this place! The sea food was great, the Decor was neat and refreshing. Just make sure to ask your server what the portion sizes are, as they are a bit smaller than you might expect from some of the pricing. That being said it's not completely exorbitantly expensive, it is priced a bit higher than you might expect for some items. We absolutely LOVE this place! They have a huge variety of fresh oysters every night. We love raw oysters and this place is quickly becoming our favorite! We also had a mackerel dish that was served in a tin with delicious oil. There was big, crusty bread to eat with it. So good! They also have good cocktails. I had one drink called The Starboard which had yellow chartreuse in it. It was so delicious! I also want to add that our server, Julie, was awesome. She came to our table quickly and told us we could get an order in at 5:45, before happy hour was over. Throughout our whole meal she was pleasant and friendly. We will definitely be back! read more

My husband and I were super excited to try Voyager out and although the food was great, the service must have been off the night we went. We love going to restaurants with small plates as we like getting to try lots of dishes. We had a catch of the day, which was tuna crudo, tomato toast, fish BLT, and crab spaghetti. Our first three items came out within an appropriate amount of time but we waited over 20 minutes for the spaghetti. We also ordered a dessert that took almost 30 minutes to get to our table. Our waitress apologized for the dishes that took a long time, but we noticed that she was doing so with many of the tables surrounding ours as well. Not sure if they were short-staffed but we felt that for a restaurant that was just named one of Food & Wine's Top 10 restaurants in the country, our overall experience would have been better. I would come back again as the food was excellent, but would hope for overall better service. read more
