My first appointment with V was three weeks ago. While at that appointment, I met another girl that got her lashes done by V. All she could do is brag about how good she was. I left that appointment very happy and satisfied with the quality, volume, and length of my lashes. I will definitely be coming to her every 3 to 4 weeks for the next three months. The staff was so nice! I got acrylics and my friend got a gel manicure. We walked in around 5:45, and they close at 7:00, but the staff stayed until 7:30 to make sure we got our nails done to perfection! They were so kind and accommodating. I have had a couple of experiences at Vs and I think it's ok but there are better places around. Pros: It's in a great location if you live, work or go to school downtown. They take walk-ins and do all of the standard services for this type of casual nail salon--gel manicure, dip powder, acrylics, eyebrow wax etc. Cons: The service is very slow for this type of walk in, casual salon. The first time I went I wanted to get my eyebrows done. When I arrived they said sure and told me to sit down. I ended up waiting over a half hour and none of the staff talked to me or updated me on what was going on so I just left. I decided to try them over a year later thinking that maybe I just caught them on a bad day and staff had probably changed since then. I went in to get shellac removed and a regular manicure. It took over an hour. They took me pretty quickly but were moving in between customers. So, for example I was left with my shellac soaking in acetone for a good 20 min, which I'm sure isn't great for your nails. It might not be so bad if they warn you that they are going to take awhile, but I was expecting to be in and out pretty quickly because other places usually complete the same service in half the time. In addition, once again no one really talked to me and despite a very visible wine rack and fridge in the back I wasn't even offered water. Their work itself is average, but not good enough for me to return. Bottom line: This place is fine but there are several other places I would go first. I would recommend Candy Nails in Old Capitol--they do better work, their staff communicates well and they're usually pretty efficient. read more

I heard good things before coming in myself, but my experience was not great. I was passed around from nail tech to nail tech and my nails were cut down way short when i had asked for them not to be. The color was supposed to be white to pink ombré with silver sparkles, and it ended up being white with white specks, witch I paid $15 more for the special color that I did not receive. Generally for dip nails you get 2-3 dips, I received 5 dips and they are unnatural thick. After 2 days my white color has faded to yellow, which never has happened when Ive gotten white dip before this. Moral of the review, I was not fond of my experience, but maybe they aren't as good at dip nails as others such as acrylic! read more

All three workers surrounded me at cash register when it was time to pay as if I would run out of the establishment (including one blocking the door). I am here on business but I feel my skin color led to their actions. I've never been treated as such at a nail salon & I will not recommend this facility to anyone; specifically women of color. I see the bad reviews but I don't believe them. This little place was great. A true family run business with great service and caring proprietors. I arrived with no appointment but was fitted in after a short (about 10 minutes) wait. Which I think is great with no appointment. The woman who owns the business works there with her husband, mother or mother-in-law (not sure which), among others. She also had her small very well behaved son there quietly playing. The place just felt homey and warm. She did a great job with my pedicure and a clean job with the polish. It was relaxing and affordable. Definitely my kind of place. The have a wide selection of nail polishes, though I brought my own and they were happy to oblige. The place was clean and equipment appeared clean. Worth the return trip. read more

This was the worst nail salon I've ever been to. I made my appointment weeks in advance and wanted a design for my birthday. When I walked in I was the only person in the salon. I showed the lady the nails I wanted and asked her to color match. She was rushing me and wouldn't let me properly look at all the colors and chose one that didn't even remotely look like the picture I had showed her. She barely paid attention to what she was doing and was digging her nails into my fingers the entire time which hurt. As soon as two white ladies walked in she told me she couldn't finish my nails and that I would have to go get them done somewhere else cuz she's "tired" and then abandons me at the table to go do the white ladies nails. I was the only person of color in the salon. She agreed to do the nails at the start it wasn't a surprise to her. The ladies who walked in didn't even have appointments and I made mine weeks in advance. I would give this place 0 stars if I could for the blatant racism. The lady also made me bleed and didn't even apologize for it? She thought it was completely normal to dig her nails into my fingers? Very odd place and a very odd staff. Extremely unprofessional. I waited at the register for her and she paid no attention to me Bc she was too busy doing the other lady's nails... after saying she's too tired to finish mine so I just walked out with unfinished nails. Then she chased me out the door screaming "PAY!" when she saw me standing there and didn't even look up. So incredibly rude. Made me pay $50 for a service she didn't even finish and then chased me down the street after SHE wouldn't even get up while I was standing at the register waiting to make a payment. My in-laws were in town and with the boys headed off to do their thing, I decided it'd be fun for us girls to treat ourselves to manicures. After reading several other reviews about this salon's tendency to be available by appointment only, I called right away in the morning and made an appointment. When we walked in, four women were getting pedicures with only two people staffing the salon, so our manicures weren't started until 45 minutes after our appointment time. The staff were very apologetic and explained that the women getting pedicures were walk-ins. Granted, that really didn't make me feel any better since the other women didn't have appointments yet were enjoying the comfort of the massage chairs while we, the ones with appointments, were sitting on rolling chairs facing a wall, and watching pain relief infomercials for 45 minutes. Queue the Seinfeld reference: "You see, you know how to taaake the reservation, you just don't know how to hooold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation - the holding... anybody can just take them." This salon does have a nice location in downtown Iowa City though and their pedicure chairs looked very new. read more

If you would like to come here, make sure to have an appointment at least 24 hours ahead. If you have an appointment, they will work very hard to make sure you take precedence. Do not come here if you are in a hurry or have to be out by a certain time. I came here a couple weeks ago with my best friend (we had an appointment); we had to wait 30 minutes but she and I are both very patient so it didn't bother us. My wife went here with a friend who was visiting from out of town. She would be yelping instead of me if she had an account. They both got the basic mani pedi package. "The salon is somewhat cramped, the nail techs seemed distracted as they were doing the mani/pedi and did not pay attention to details, and they switched between customers so you would have two different people doing hands and two different doing feet leading to inconsistencies. WILL NOT BE COMING BACK!! i had tina and wow the number of things that went wrong during my appt were crazy! first of all, i sit down and she is extremely rough with my nails. i was telling her it hurt throughout the whole appt. she didn't say sorry once and cut my pointer finger open and proceeded to just wipe the blood away violently. then, she barely filed to shape my nails-they we're extremely pointy and i had to ask for them to be filed more 10 times. each time i asked her to fix them, she barely filed yet again. i got charged $5 extra for the awful shape and should have gotten a discount considering she sliced open my nail even after i told her she was hurting me. the worst customer service i've experienced. my friends nails took 2 hrs to do as her lady left her halfway through her appt. and i had made an appt prior to try and prevent this from happening. to say the least, i'm in pain and am still sitting here in this chair waiting for my friends nails to be done-just don't even come to this place. not worth a single penny. read more

I am bilingual and pretended not to understand Vietnamese just to see if they would talk about their customers. Went in to get dip powder taken off. Sat with my hands in a bowl of nail polish removed for 40 minutes before someone came over to check on my nails. Was then charged $10. I have never been charged more than $5 to have any type of nails taken off. Ended up being there for an hour and paying $10 to soak my hands in a bowl of nail polish remover. read more

So I'm disgruntled. And unimpressed. I went here because Candy Nails was on holiday. I had one good manicure here over the summer. Not so today!!! For one, it took them FOREVER to do the dip powder. Which, it usually does because it's dip powder; I'm used to the process. But it took them like an HOUR to get my old powder off (45 min at least). I'm like ok. Learning curve. Maybe the next part will go smoothly. NOPE. They went to cut and file my nails. My original artist was doing fine, but another of the stylists stepped in. She went at it and SLICED my pinky. Like ok yo. They did at least put something on it directly after, but I wasn't told if it was disinfectant, oil or what. Ok. No big. Prolly should have left there but as I am, I'm kind of a sucker and thought the worst had happened. Maybe the second lady was just overzealous. NOPE. My original artist did the SAME THING ON THE OTHER PINKY!! Another drop of mystery liquid. Ok. So now the worst has happened right?? My original stylist goes to do the dip powder and she DIPS BOTH PINKIES in the powder!! I even stopped her and was like that's really cross contamination. You can totally brush that on, I won't mind. She says, "oh no this is organic. Good for your nails!" Which is absolutely not what cross contamination is about. I asked not to pay, and settled for a discount (I did stay anyway. I'm partially at fault). But when I explained my issue with the cross contamination (because that's not just my safety, that's everyone), she reiterated the line about it being "natural" and having oils and whatnot. Ugh. I called her out in that too like "blood, dude," and she just responded with "oh" as though she kind of knew the excuse was shady. They clearly don't know what their competitors are up to; Candy Nails in old cap might fuck with the texture or whatnot, but I always feel physically safe, and it's never done in more than and hour and a half. They wear gloves, are efficient, and I've never been in pain, in fear of an infection, etc. Stay away from these peeps!!! read more

Straight up excellent place! We were attended to like we were the only people in the world that mattered...and every patron that walked in after us was treated the same way despite there not being enough people working to serve a customer one-on-one. Our hot rock pedicure took almost two hours...UNHEARD of with salons like this! We did not feel at all like we were on a factory line and were never rushed along in order to make room for the next customer. Clean, accommodating and uber friendly people working there! Lots of nail colors to choose from.... money well spent and my 17 yr old daughter commented that she will be back, despite the distance from our home. "Mom, I'm coming here the next time I'm in Iowa City..." Being 50 miles away and always in town for sports, shopping or orthodontist appointments, that won't be hard to do and will be a welcome treat when we're in town! My experience was extremely unpleasant, to get just my nails done with a dip manicure it took over 2 and a half hours. My nails were also cut way shorter than I told them that I wanted them cut, and while getting them done the skin around my nail was ripped multiple times with the nail file. Atmosphere leaves something to be desired- there are a bunch of kids running around and the ladies will sometimes interrupt your service to go and attend to them before they get into trouble. However, they are great at what they do! I love getting my mani-pedis here. Also, the eyelash extensions are BEAUTIFULLY done. The lady who does them is definitely well trained and takes her time.
