I was hesitant to go here, as it has a very unassuming exterior and seemingly limited frame selection and honestly just booked an appointment because I live nearby and needed a new prescription for my lenses. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience!! I had a bit of a wait time before my appointment, but the exam did not take long at all. We figured out my new prescription and then talked about my previous contacts to see if a switch should be made (I was recommended a new daily lens that is good for people with allergies and struggle with dryness- they are AMAZING). They also tested my vision while wearing the new contacts in order to verify that they were the best choice (no other place has done this for me before) and determined to change the prescription a bit. This attention to detail means a lot and made my experience all the better. I had an evening appointment and by the time I was ready to pick my frames, they had technically closed, but they stayed with me and did not rush me at all in picking out my frames. I was very grateful for this! They made sure I had frames that suited me even though I am indecisive and they had already closed. The frames ended up being perfect and my overall favorite pair of glasses ever! This is a feat considering I hadn't changed frames in 3 years. Also, the lenses themselves are phenomenal and the prescription does not change at all even when looking out of the edges of the lenses. Amazing overall! read more

Writing this review took me some months, because I believed I needed time to adjust to my progressive glasses properly and I did not want to write it based on my terrible experience with their customer assistance. Today I got a new eye exam (in a different place, of course!) and my suspicions were confirmed: They got the wrong prescription. I have dry eyes, and the doctor from VZN Eye Care did not consider that and didn't take extra time checking my vision. So, this year I had to pay twice for glasses. Okay, typically I wouldn't do a review on a business I haven't visited in person, but this one is merited. VZN purports to accept insurance; however, when it comes to federally funded insurances, VZN enforces arbitrary stipulations that are not applied to others insurances. One being the requirement to use your full benefits during your visit (e.g. if you've acquired a prescription elsewhere, you can't use your remaining benefits with them). That's discriminatory not to mention questionable business practices. A customer can't use their rightful benefits because you didn't furnish the eye prescription? I found this to truly be absurd. And if that's only one of their arbitrary requirements, I can't imagine what else they have up their sleeve. TL/DR: Unless you're ready to be yanked around at a whim, steer clear of this place. read more

Came here after purchasing a Groupon for my fiance. He wanted an eye exam and didn't think his insurance covered it. When we got there they said it can be covered by insurance, but we only wanted to use the Groupon. The lady helping us kept trying to use the insurance but I had to be very firm and repeat it many times that we only want to use the Groupon deal ( why would I pay for a Groupon and not use it). After we got through that the service was good. The doctor explained everything as he was doing it and my fiance got his glasses a couple of days later. read more

First if you are on medicaid/medicare which she accepts don't go here. as you are treated differently. i went to pick up my glasses and her assistant just handed them to me and went back to talking to another person. i waited for about 5 minutes and she asked if she could help me with something else. i said "yes. do i get a case? she went back and bought me a case and then went back to talking. i said do you mind if i try them on? etc,etc. i don't think she did not want to give them to me. it just never occurred to her!! i have been here twice and each time Dr. Vlada Nakhlis told me what i needed after the exam and sent me to another room where the attendant just happened to have (for sale)..you guessed it ......!!! she is very profit oriented and nickle and dimes you all the way out. read more

This is a new update for my previous review (which was also 5 stars). I was having some issues with my new glasses so I took them back and was really taken care of in a wonderful way. Alex kept reassuring me that they would find a solution and that there was nothing to worry about. Right away, that put me at ease. Dr. Vlada then did a follow-up exam to see if there was anything that the other doctor missed during my last eye exam. She was very thorough and this impressed me since I also have a meticulous personality and I don't like it when doctors rush or don't take the time to explain things to me. After the follow-up exam, Dr. Vlada adjusted my prescription a little bit and Alex also found some problems with my new glasses due to a mistake made by the lens lab that my insurance uses. They sent it back to be fixed, and now I don't have to worry about my new glasses because I know I am in good hands. I can't say enough just how much I love this business. They make you feel like an appreciated customer. As long as I live in Chicago I will always, always go to VZN for my exams and glasses. read more

I had a really great experience at this office. I was in for a typically yearly exam for a new glasses prescription. I did wait for a little bit in the exam room because the doctors previous appointment went a little long, but i still was in and out of the office within an hour or so. I hate having my eyes dilated so I appreciated the retina scan technology they offer. I got better information on the health of my eyes and didn't have to walk around like a zombie for hours after the appointment. read more

Ok- so after my previous review, VZN contacted me within a week of my post. They were AMAZING in trying to figure out what went wrong with my previous visit. I even when to get an eye check up at another place before scheduling with VZN. I have to say that VZN has the best in serious eye care, their appointment was more intensive and WAYYY more informative as to what I can do to help my eyes. The doctor explained every step and even called me herself to ensure that I would come back for my appointment. Not only did they get me a great deal on new glasses and frames, the optician explained to me how my new polarized lenses worked! Seriously, they do care. I found this place through groupon. I am glad i tried it. Ive been a faithfull client for 3 years... i also brought my sister and niece to get their glasses here.. Alex always treats well and gives us good deals plus this place accepts almost any type of insurance and they have a great selection of designer glasses....I've bought 1pair of Versace sunglasses that I love!!! And some eye glasses: 1 armani, and 2 coach pairs!! They also offer a great insurance plan for lenses directly through them and if you need to get your lenses adapted or repaired Alex does it and has them ready that same day! I love that because I'm terrible with taking care of my glasses...somehow something always happens to them...but I don't have to stress too much about it, I bring them to Alex I don't have to pay to ship them to some strange company to get them fixed and have to wait weeks for them read more

The doctor is profit driven only. I emailed VZN to ask for my eye data (distance PD data, distance between two pupils) that I took from VZN one year ago. I did my eye exam and purchased glass from VZN. And therefore, VZN had my data. VZN replied I have pay $30 just for the distance PD data or buy another glass from them. I feel that as a doctor, profit should not be their highest priority. read more

Reading the other posters review actually made me feel a LOT better, but not in that warm fuzzy way. I got the exact same type of lecture on my eyes, was told that I should never wear contacts, and was given a very high-pressure sales pitch on their frames. I didn't have much of a choice where to go, as this is one of the few close places that accepts our insurance, but I would not recommend them to ANYONE that has even a slightly wider choice range. Their glasses selection is sub-par at best and extremely over priced. Again, the ONLY reason I stayed was because I couldn't find another place with our insurance :( Because my glasses wouldn't arrive for 6-8 weeks, I was told that they would not be contacting me, I would have to call and "just keep checking in" to see if there were there yet. read more

I got my glasses at this site last July. I did not see their doctor since I already had a prescription for new glasses. I also had insurance. I ended up paying $150 for my new pair of glasses. Since then, i have returned three times because the lens keep popping out. Also, the frames keep bending and getting loose. Today, I went to have the lens put in, again, and to have the frames tightened. The lady suggested I put clear nail polish on the screws to prevent the loosening. WTF??? I pay $150 for a pair of glasses and within a year I have returned three times for repairs. This store recently made a change in management. However, it appears they still carry the same crappy frames. i will never return there for a new pair. I mean, really, $150 plus an insurance payment and I have returned 3x within a year. read more

VZN did a great job of giving me a good idea of my vision and what I need to do for the future. Had to pay a decent penny for new lenses after insurance, but they were at least very quality lenses with all the trimmings, and they work very well. The frame the technician picked out got a lot of compliments from my friends, so kudos for that as well. Will definitely go back in a year for another vision checkup. read more

This is by far the most unorganized.. Lazy..inconsiderate place I've ever been.. I told them my contacts burned my eyes.. Can I please change brands..no I can not without paying for another exam witch I just got 3 months ago.. I was past the 90 day limit...which I never knew about.. I got a sample pack of lenses.. I put them on the next morning and everything was blury.. Went in after work to get the right pair and they said that's the prescription I'm suppose to have.. REALLY!!! I live right down the street from Affordable Optical, and they accepted my insurance, so I gave them a try. While I know there are multiple bad reviews, I found my experience to be very pleasant. The receptionist helped me find a pair of frames I really liked while I was waiting to be seen, and then my eye exam was brief and to the point. The doctor does encourage that you wear your contacts as little as possible (someone mentioned that as a negative in a previous post) but it's true... eyes were not designed to have plastic lining on them. Plus, she's an eye doctor for goodness sake! You don't go to a dentist and expect them to tell you to eat a ton of candy. Overall, I was in and out in 40 minutes (I was expecting about an hour, but was not rushed at all) and I left with my trial pair of contacts and glasses ordered. The doctor was thorough and kind, as was the optician. (The optician even answered all my questions about my vision insurance because I didn't know that much about it.) They even took my Flex Spending Credit Card. I would definitely recommend Affordable Optical! read more

While I appreciate the response, I do not agree that I "misinterpreted" my experience. When discussing the issue with my blind eye, you actually told me that it was unattractive and I would "feel better" about it if I pursued cosmetic treatment. I've lived with a functionally blind eye since I was six years old and as every optometrist, ophthalmologist and surgeon I've spoken to since then has said, all that can be done is cosmetic. My eye is *not* a health problem; it's not something new that needs to be treated. Of course it makes sense to take a patient history, but taking a history does not need to involve ten minutes of questions over why I wanted to change doctors. I moved, my last optometrist was on the entire other side of Chicago, there was nothing more to it. I did not leave him because I didn't like his recommendation against contacts - while I was disappointed at the time, I understand I need to protect the vision I still have and that contacts are an unacceptable risk. I did not need to be told that all over again, and I wasn't trying to get a contact prescription in the first place. I would have appreciated being respected for the decisions that I as a patient had made. read more

I haven't purchased a pair of glasses from this place yet since I have to figure out how to pay for them (it's cheap, but my insurance is bad, and I don't have any money...), but I did go in for an exam, and I had a really great experience. First of all, I was told that they recently went under new management, the doctor discussed it with me, she seemed to think that the new management is a lot better than the previous ones. I woke up late for my appointment, and I called and they told me that i could come in anyway, which I thought was nice since usually you can't do that kind of thing. They have saturday hours, which is great for me since I work and go to school during the week. They also call you before your appointment to remind you, and I had missed an appointment and they called me after to see if I wanted to reschedule, which is great. As for the staff, everyone was really nice, they told me how much I was going to be paying before they looked at me, and I didn't pay a penny over what they said I would ($40 for the eye exam after my insurance discount) The doctor talked to me about my options for lenses until I was satisfied, and then we had a nice conversation about the neighborhood and my school. She was incredibly friendly, and very knowledgable, and not impatient in the slightest. I would assume that all these dissatisfied reviews were written when they were under different management. I would definitely recommend this place. I would also like to mention that it is a privately owned place, it is not a lenscrafters or four eyes, and it is great to support local business when possible. read more

I made an appointment for a general eye exam so I could purchase new glasses. This wasn't an "in and out" eye exam like I am so used to. When they started the exam, they gave me an option to do a retinal screening for a small fee and explained why it would be beneficial to me and my eyes health. They did not "force" it upon me like I read in other reviews. I gladly accepted for them to do this and I am so glad I did. Dr.Vlada was extremely helpful and explained the pictures very clearly. I came in for an update in my prescription and to have my glasses replaced. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by the now technology! I think the last time I went somewhere was about 2 years ago and that place still used the old-school lens selection. Everything was quick and sanitary. Was given some contacts to try and knew that I for sure was going to stick with my current ones (allergy eyes LOVE Acuvue Oasys, lol!). While the selection for frames is smaller than your mega chain retailers, I was able to find something new and updated with the trends. My current frames are 7 years old so you can say I am VERY used to them hahaha! All-in-all my appointment was awesome and I was in and out in 45 minutes. Cant wait until my new glasses arrive! AS long as I don't move from Rogers Park in the next year, I will definitely be back! Oh! They take CareCredit! This was another reason why I chose this location, I'm of the working poor so it helps a lot when I have extra expenses. If it weren't for the doctor, this would be a one star review. I loved her attitude, means if asking and answering questions and thoroughness in her consults. It's everything else that is terrible. The phones are always ringing off the hook, every time I am there it's rare to see anyone actually answer the phone. Thus, when trying to call to set up an appointment, it usually takes a few tries, or several bouts of phone tag and voice mails. The front if house staff and techs give lukewarm service at best. But the worst is the fact they seem so unorganized. This has been my only eye doctor I've seen for three years. Everytime I come back for an appointment I'm treated as if they've never seen me before, including a "welcome to our practice!" spiel. Seriously, check the client history before starting your consultation. My history was thoroughly taken the first visit, nothing changed. They'd always exclaim afterwards too, "Oh, we had that already." So.. not sure if their programming or note taking is garbage or what- but it has been irritating g enough to seek service elsewhere. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO PAY OUT THE ASS FOR AN EYE EXAM!! A little back story, I need new glasses and a new script. I've had my current pair for about 2 years and they recently broke. I live nearby so this place seemed super convenient. I called for an appointment and after speaking on the phone with this women for what felt like a long time, she kept calling me a women after I repeatedly told her I was a man. (My name is Jacob for Christ's sake) She also insisted that I get a ridiculous eye scan from an expansive machine. After I was assured I didn't have to get to the scan I made an appointment. Fast forward to today, the day before my appointment, I get a call from them to confirm my appointment. Again I'm called a women on the phone and this time they tell me I have to get the scan and it's going to cost me $139 without the discount I get from my insurance. With the discount it'd still be $119. So outrageous!! Most places I've done research at will only charge around $50 - $75. So I cancelled my appointment. I was so offended by my experience, I don't usually write reviews but Jesus, this place was terrible. read more

WARNING! This place takes advantage of the disabled and elderly, especially those that are not English speaking. They refused to give me a copy of my eye exam results for over and hour and a half even though I am disabled and was in pain arguing with them. . I heard them over --selling elderly people in wheelchairs on expensive glasses for over $400.00 when they obviously could not afford them nor understand the bill. The old man kept saying what is this bil??!! I don't understand and they just kept shouting that's your bill, pay it. A friend of mine went in once then was called back for more and more " tests" till her cheap glasses cost her father over $450.00. Dr. Vlad was also VERY RUDE to me in front of all the people waiting by insulting people on Medicaid, this place is a trap/scam. Beware. read more

Dear Dr. Vlada I find it unfortunate that you had to make this posting public and because it has come to this, I will type it all. "We" did not go above and beyond to respond positively to all "my" concerns. There was never a discussion regarding my concerns. Yes, I was invited back, not to provide the best quality of care offered, but a "complimentary exam" being offered for the removal of my review. There were no million apologies, and neither were they apologetic. There was no mention of inconvenience and/or misunderstanding "that may have occurred". I posted a review of what "did occur". There was no time and effort spent to satisfy my "every demand", because I didn't make any. I had no needs, desires, nor expectations to be met. No discussions of these accusations were ever took place. You didn't charge me a cent since I was "offered" a "complimentary" retinal screening photography. I was never "squeezed into your jam packed schedule ( I have proof) to accommodate me in every way. How many ways are there? What accommodations? At the end of the exam, I was "directed to step my way over to look at and purchase eyeglasses. I was not asked if everything was to "my liking" (whatever that means), so there was no YES to respond to. What I did say before my way out, was that I did not want to select or make a purchase of eyeglasses. I did not speak to anyone about hard work, achievements, or pleasing me. Afterwards, I was asked, via a telephone call, to remove the review I posted relating to the negative experience I encountered. However, I received one call, not countless efforts to reach me afterwards. I made no promise, nor promises, and no, I still haven't removed the review. I was contacted afterwards, personally by you via voicemail, to reiterate the request to remove the review that was not up to your liking. As I stated before, I did not make any demands, had no conversations about needs, desires, and expectations. No, I didn't return your call, or let you know anything since I'm not bargaining or seeking favor. I am offended at the accusation that I am looking for complimentary service, I never asked, looked, or implied. I posted a review of my experience, Your assumption is 100% incorrect. You had a choice to apologize and be apologetic for the misunderstanding on behalf of your staff, yet your choice was to reply by demeaning and disregarding the fact that I was treated and spoken poorly to. The only effort you have made obviously clear is that your disrespect for my experience and your dissatisfaction of my review, got lost in your "efforts" to satisfy me as a patient/customer, and the "providing of highest quality of customer care". My review related my experience with your staff, I didn't post a review of your "quality of care". Your prevarications of my non statements of " to my liking" is above and beyond insulting. I was offered complimentary services for bargaining and favor. This was not my "grievance". I had an abysmal time with Affordable Optical in Rogers Park. I had purchased a pair of prescription glasses and sunglasses. Not only did I get a runaround when I was told they would be ready in 2 days, it was 3 weeks for my regular glasses. Then it was another week for the prescription sunglasses. Then the sunglass frames kept breaking, 3 times I went back with broken glasses in hand. Mind you, I'm gentle with my possessions. It's not like I'm a 10 year old who doesn't know better! Come to find out, even though the woman knew she was putting a prescription in the frames, "They are not meant to have prescription lenses in them". Really? Why on earth would you sell them to someone with prescription lenses! On top of that, on the 3rd trip back after wasting time and taking off from work to get these fixed, I was told a manager would call me with "a deal" to remedy the situation. That was 2 months ago. Nothing. I am out $160. This place is horrible. I wouldn't even recommend it to someone I didn't like. I gave it a star because I had to. read more
