I got super excited when I learned there was torched sushi available in Guelph, but the excitement was short lived... Came here with 2 friends and we were not impressed. The worst items were probably the salmon tataki, wonton soup, ramen. Also the speciality rolls were terrible. The best items were the torched white fish sushi, bacon wrapped asparagus and cheese wontons. Service was decent. However I was super unhappy when we got charged for the rolls we didn't eat, even though we tried to explain it was because we didn't like them. It was also quite expensive, over $30 for dinner. It used to be very decent for the price, almost entirely the same as Cherry Blossom. Now it's disgusting discount food - for the same price as the quality places in town. To put in perspective how cheap the new W is - they don't offer tuna in any of the sushi. Let's get this out of the way. The food is decent. Let's set that aside and explain why W Sushi totally sucks. My first order on the ipad went through fine. Ordered only about half the things I wanted. Things were going great and this is my first time there. I placed my second order of food and ice cream + desserts. The server with glasses came and even asked if I wanted the ice cream right away or at the end. I said yea at the end is even better. So me and my date waited and waited. We waited so long she went to the ladies room and came back with no food arriving. This is over 15 minutes past now.... The server wearing glasses brings me the bill! I was just stunned.....I told him NONE (0) of the food of the second and last order has come! So he says I will go check on it. He explains after that the computer had a error and the food will come. The female server wearing the kimono outfit brings me the debit machine to pay right after seeing the bill on my table! Remember I havent received any of my second order yet! Not ONE item. I was stunned...! So I paid and left a tip despite the horrible experience so far. I told the female server I was still waiting on my food! I wait and wait and OMG no food is coming out! I am steaming at this point. Trying to keep it civil and polite. Finally the glasses dude see's that he messed up big and gets some other server to give us some random ice cream. I eat it and leave. I came here for dinner and it was about $25 for dinner (before tips and tax). I found it expensive that's why I try to avoid all you can eat sushi. However, I was visiting my friend in Guelph and we wanted sushi so we came here. The food here is good, the service was great and the food came fast. My only complaint is that the rolls were just a tinge too big for my liking and I think the shrimp was very small in the shrimp tempura. My two friends got miso soup and it was very salty (perhaps they just messed up that one night). However, they thoroughly enjoyed the Udon. I like the dessert choices they have. So, I recently moved back to Guelph and decided to go to this restaurant with the sole purpose of reviewing it. For Guelph, this restaurant is great. Lunch menu: $16.99 Dinner menu: $25.99 10/02/2015 I think that's pretty basic if you compare with Toronto prices. The lunch menu is not as extensive as the dinner menu hence the price difference. We went on a Saturday at lunch time a few weeks ago. It wasn't too busy, atmosphere was great. Decor is modern. Not too noisy. I started with the mango salad and the avocado salad. Mango was tart and sweet, avocado was, well, avocado. They add some sort of sauce that makes everything a little bit acidic. Tasty. They were both good. The tempura was light and crispy not too oily and the shrimp was crunchy. We had the teriyaki chicken the short ribs and the deep fried chicken with sriracha. They were all well done and tasted good. My favorite was the chicken with sriracha dipping. We ordered, spicy salmon rolls, tempura rolls, etc. They were done nicely, tasted fresh and had no problems finishing them all. I think ppl that complain about the size of AYCE sushi don't realize there's a big difference when you order a la cart. The rolls were all normal size to me. Special request: I wanted the beef udon soup but they didn't have the spicy kind so I ask if they could make it spicy, they did. No problem. Dessert: I wish the variety was more for lunch but for $16.99 is not bad. Green tea ice cream was great, sesame balls were not overcooked. A la cart: I saw that they have 'frozen milk' for dessert but only at dinner time so I ordered some separately. It was delicious. Not many places sell this so it was a great surprise. Poor. All around disappointing. The soy sauce was watered down the point where there was no taste. The tea was hot water, the rolls were not tight and presented well, and rice inside was hot. A cold piece of fish on a ball of hot rice is less than appetizing to say the least. The tempura was dripping in grease and was cold. Atmosphere was loud and disorganized. When this place first opened, it was fantastic. Sushi was of decent size, sashimi was plentiful, they had lots of really cool new rolls, etc. As a previous student at the U of G, I have many great memories at this place - post-exam dinners, birthdays, post-hangover...anyway, you get it! As students, we loved this place and we felt that the price was reasonable and you got great value for what you paid for. I've since graduated from Guelph and a group of my friends from school & I decided to use Guelph as a central meeting place for a mini-reunion and we decided to take a blast from the past and go to W-sushi for lunch. My...have things changed. We arrived at around 2 pm ish for lunch. They now have a "lunch" menu, in which you can't order certain rolls until dinner time. They never used to have that. Sashimi is still reserved for dinner, which is not uncommon for all you can eat places. What bothers me is that they've taken skimping to a whole new level and I'm pretty sure it's not that my standards have changed (now that I'm working and a bit less poor than a student). They've definitely diluted the soy-sauce. No soy sauce is that light. When I poured it, it was LIGHT BROWN. The soy sauce also really lacked any flavour at all. Their nigiri's now consist of a paper thin slice of fish with a HUGE chunk of rice so that they can fill you up. After one round of nigiri's, we decided this was ridiculous and didn't order more. My friend ordered a hand roll and it looked like it was packed down with rice too. Their Japanese fried rice (aka, we call it crack fried rice) is still just as delicious and addictive. All in all, their cooked foods haven't changed but their dishes are now a lot smaller and thus, you have to order more frequently. At 3 ish (close to 4 pm), we were told that we could only have 1 more round of orders (we only had 1 order made previously) because they were "closing down" to set up for dinner. We therefore ordered everything BUT nigiri and hand rolls. Overall, I was quite disappointed that this place has become so cheap and has decided to skimp out so much. I used to come here over all the other all-you can eat places because they didn't skimp. Because of the Toronto power outage, I migrated to Guelph during Christmas and went to Hockey Sushi - WAY better bang for your buck. So all you students, go there instead because they definitely give you less rice and more goods :). Unless...you like to die from a rice coma...that's fine by me. read more

AMAZING! Sushi was superb and the service was lightning fast! Price was on par with what you would from a high quality sushi all you can eat restaurant. Staff was friendly and not overly pushy. Staying in town for work, I decided to check out the Guelph Yelp scene, not expecting much. W Sushi was one of the first favorable places to show up, and having not had sushi in a while, I gave it a try. As previously mentioned, the restaurant interior is well designed and good-looking; we showed up around 9 and the place was fairly empty (Last call is at 9:30). This just meant that we had three different waiters/waitresses taking our orders, so yes, there was a bit of repetition, but not a big deal. I can't remember the names of the rolls I had, but they were great. The miso soup is standard, maybe lacking on the tofu side. I finished off with the chicken teriyaki udon, which was probably my favorite. There is so much on this menu for an All You Can Order restaurant; every time I ordered something, the waitress would leave and I'd see something else that I wanted! This place I believe has reopened with the same name but with new management! I have been to many sushi places across Ontario and this is one of my recommended here in Guelph. The service has been amazing the last few times I've been there, the food is incredibly fast, fresh, and delicious. The sashimi was amazing. The portions are perfect. The ordering from the iPad is efficient and have plenty of variety. Pricing is very average (find most options in Guelph are fairly expensive). ONLY downside is they do not have Green Tea Ice Cream...which is honestly a huge thing for me when I go out to sushi! Hopefully they will have that as an option in the future. read more

Guelph has a surprisingly decent amount of asian restaurants and grocery stories despite the actual asian community here is pretty small. Though I do not complain since I often find myself having cravings when I'm back home. Recommend going for lunch if you do AYCE since the price is much better and the menu for the large part is very similar (there are a few pricer items offered during dinner only). This is my personal fav for AYCE in Guelph since it is very clean, nicely laid out and offers good food for the price. The fish is usually good, though obviously don't expect high-quality sashmi at this price point. Service is usually very good, never had a really bad experience. I think when reviewing sushi places, especially in Guelph, is that you need to realize this isn't high quality sushi. That should be an expectation when walking into sushi places around the area. That doesn't mean it isn't good though. W Sushi is as good as the Sushi scene gets in Guelph. It certainly is a far cry from "world's best", but for a little city in the middle of Southern Ontario where Sushi certainly isn't expected to be phenomenal, it's pretty darn good. I went for the lunch special all you can eat special today, and there is such a good selection compared to other places. Ordering the likes of; . California Roll. . Spicy Salmon Roll . Shrimp Tempura . Shrimp Tempura Roll . Dynamite Roll . Sushi Pizza. . Seaweed Salad All were up to par for what I expected. The staff were very friendly and often checked in to see how we were doing. The only complain I had was that a few of the things we ordered never made it to our table. This wasn't a huge deal because it is all you can eat, you can reorder, and there is always food on the table, but some organization would be a little more important. Other than that, it was delicious. The free ice cream is always such a good touch, and there is such a wide variety. If you want sushi in Guelph, simply come here. A bunch of us had a blast chatting in the wonderful atmosphere they provided. Since there was 8 of us, we succeeded in ordering every item on the menu. Some more then once. Which seemed to irritate them since we payed only a couple tens each for more then 100 dishes. The food was delicious and simply good. And I won't go further then that since some things were plain like the mussels and masago sushi, from the top of my head. But at the same time there were exploding tastes in my mouth with some of the regular known sushi, soups, and meat dishes. The waitress was a little slow taking our order down since we had rather large orders. They took as long as I expected to make which is good. And since we ordered again when we go our first dishes, it felt like food just kept coming. To conclude my review I wouldn't mind visiting again for the amount we ate at that price. Over the years, my family and I have gone back and again to W Sushi, it is our favourite place in the region (and we are big sushi fans who have tried many sushi places in KW, Guelph and Cambridge). Try ordering directly from the menu instead of the buffet, the buffet is good, but the menu items ordered directly are MUCH better and bigger. For those that think the quality is not that fantastic, try the regular menu instead of the all you can eat, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Granted, it is hard to call it the best sushi in the world, I've had my share in other countries and some are really great, and could not qualify if in Japan (or Korea or China, where sushi rest owners in Canada tend to be from) is any better, I would assume true Japanese sushi must be miles ahead, but living in Guelph and being a bit of a foodie, I think it is most likely the best in the region. Based on reviews I had read I was honestly a little worried about what the experience would be here, it seemed like it could be hit or miss. But to be honest I had a good experience. I found that the fish seemed quite fresh and the rolls were good. Although, There was one or two items that we ordered that didn't show up. Service was fast which was great. Overall a good experience. The service is fast and easy to order. They give you a tablet with a built in menu, you order what you want, the server confirms it, and brings you your order within a few minutes (all-you-can-eat). There looks like there were 4 or 5 sushi chefs preparing the food so that probably why service is quick. The menu is also really impressive. Besides the many variety of sushi rolls, they also make assortment of soups, seafood and veggie dishes. Try the deep fried squid, it was my favorite. I would say the atmosphere there is really nice, and it's perfect for groups, and the menu is also friendly to folks who aren't entirely fans of sushi. But if you are a sushi lover, this is probably the best place in Guelph to get sushi. Price is fair. read more

It's a pleasant impression upon walking through the door to the university's local sushi hangout. The smell is fresh and airy without a single fishy odour to send you running for your intestine's life. Service is quick and polite, though it was early enough that they were hardly stressed. The good: -Selection, it's a well-sized menu -Shrimp tempura, it was light and not greasy -The beef and salmon tataki were delicious -The fish is fresh, cold, and firm. -The salmon and scallop sashimi were particularly excellent. -The ice cream was creamy and delicious with zero flakes of ice The bad: -You're limited to single servings of beef and salmon tataki -The squid "tempura" is just poorly-cooked calamari rings -The squid tendrils were flavored like a spicy calamari and more tender, but far too greasy to eat. -The salmon roe nigiri was skimpy the first time. On the second order you could see half the rice underneath. Hugely disappointing. -Shrimp egg rolls look like they're from M&M's. -The sesame chicken is breaded with a sweet sauce. No sign of sesame seeds. Or flavor. -The spicy beef is thinly sliced, tough, and flavourless other than a blandly spicy sauce. -Say no to the mussels. They're absolutely awful. -The mango pudding is aromatic, but a but off in flavor and the texture is too gelatinus. I realize the "bad"s look long, but I really do recommend the place. I hate eaten at this place many times, but I'll never go again after this experience. I ordered a normal list of items for all you can eat sushi: a few rolls and a seaweed salad. The (male) server decided to tell me that it was too much food, and after an argument he left my table to punch my order in. About a third of my order arrived: a seaweed salad, and a maki roll. I left hungry from an all-you-can-eat restaurant. The owners were unsympathetic. I'm a fitness professional and they have no business fat-shaming me for feeding myself during my work day. Thank goodness this place closed down, their staff was the rudest I have encountered and they did seem to care about making the customers experience enjoyable at all.
