All of my close family members are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL. As soon as I uttered St. Mary's, I was shut down. My mother's wake and funeral were in 1995, and my brother's wake and funeral were held at T&K in 2017. There was no problem, and our family was satisfied with everything. Both of these times, our dealings were with the same woman. My less than satisfactory experience with my husband's wake and funeral were overseen by a man (I won't even use his name). I've instructed both of my children that when I die, DO NOT hold my wake and funeral at Thomspon & Kuenster.

At no point was there compassion, professionalism, or basic human decency. Even during the ceremony, multiple guests felt and witnessed the owner's cold, dismissive behavior, which was deeply inappropriate and hurtful. They withhold critical information, refuse to explain how their facility operates, and behave as though grieving families are not entitled to transparency or respect. When families ask reasonable questions or advocate for themselves, they are intimidated, threatened, and spoken to aggressively. This is not care--it is control. Our loved one's body was mishandled, and we were denied the right to see him, as if this funeral home believed they had ownership over his body rather than understanding the sacred responsibility entrusted to them. This decision alone caused irreparable emotional harm to our family. The facility felt unsanitary, disorganized, and unsafe, raising serious concerns about hygiene, health standards, and basic compliance. Nothing about this environment felt dignified or respectful. What was clear is that this establishment is predatory--they will squeeze every possible dollar out of grieving families, exploiting pain for profit. This funeral home creates trauma instead of providing care. They add suffering to families already experiencing unimaginable loss. Their behavior is unethical, harmful, and completely unacceptable. During the ceremony, instead of checking in with all family members, they only acknowledged those who "hired" them--directly contradicting what they advertise on their own website. I strongly warn everyone--especially families of color--to stay far away from this establishment. They should be reported immediately to the health department, state licensing boards, and consumer protection agencies for their conduct, conditions, and treatment of grieving families. No one deserves to be verbally abused, silenced, or retraumatized while trying to lay their loved one to rest. This establishment needs to learn how to treat and speak to all family members with dignity and respect. They are also deleting post from their google review to hide their despicable treatment.

On the way to the airport, I stopped at the funeral home. She asked if they had done my parents' funerals. I was a bit embarrassed and said "no, but they lived around the corner." After explaining what I wanted, she quickly separated the ashes into three containers and brought them back to me. I asked her what was the charge. She said "No charge. Happy to do it." I was blown away. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting (a few $100 dollars maybe) but I wasn't expecting it for free. And that was it. I am so grateful to the kind people at Kish and if I sadly had another service to plan in the area, I would absolutely use them.

Comments were made to me during the meeting that were unwarranted and left me confused as to why they were even said to me while making funeral arrangements. My one brief encounter with the owner of the funeral home was when he came in the room as we were placing flowers around the casket and I said everything looks good. The owner of Kish Funeral Home exclaimed "this isn't our first time at the rodeo." I found this to be a very insensitive and crass comment to make in light of the loss and grief we were feeling. No signs of empathy or a genuine handshake from a business man who owns a prominent funeral home in town. I was told that our funeral was the worst they have had in the 10 years they were in business. I was shocked that this was stated to me because I did not encounter any incident or cause any problems for the funeral home or their representatives, but when I questioned the remark 3 times, they refused to answer or apologize. During this very sensitive time, I found this comment insulting and injurious to my good character. Funeral homes should never advocate for familial unity when there was none prior to the passing of the decedent. Funeral homes shouldn't pass judgement, exhibit favoritism or discriminate based on status or title even though the deceased resided in the Cobblestones. Mourners certainly will take note of bossy and rude representatives of Kish Funeral Home during the wake and tell me later how they felt. Once your funeral is a sure thing, their next goal is securing the next wake. You can get everything right but if you violate a family's trust by overstepping your place and bounds, you lose everything. Trust is everything to a family when selecting a funeral home. Unfortunately, it is not easy to grab your deceased loved one and walk out the front door once arrangements have been made. Kish Funeral Home lost on all counts.

They are doing a great injustice to their customers but not being able to service them properly. For example, for my sisters arrangements, we had to follow up for 3-4 days for them to post the obituary and when they did, they only posted the service hours. Not even her photo or the obituary we had so thoughtfully crafted. She said her daughter in law would do it then she said her worker would do it. It never happened. They did not have her cards made up, they had no toilet paper and no coffee on the morning of the funeral. That is not service and it made things so much more difficult on the family. I just don't want to see other families have to endure this.
