Family Diner - Take out catfish plate( available on Fridays)

It was Friday so fried fish was on the menu. The fried whiting was delicious with sides of mac n cheese, cabbage and green beans. All perfectly seasoned. My friend loved her meal as well. She even got a to go plate for later, w/ fried catfish and sides. Service was friendly and courteous. The wait staff checked on us frequently to see if we needed anything. We'll definitely be back the next time we travel to Oxford!

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

We chose outdoor seating and even though it was warm, it wasn't that Miami heat, so we were perfectly happy enjoying the outside. It also got us seated a little quicker. We had some time to look at the menu while waiting and ended up ordering the chicken and waffles, meat lovers scramble bowl, the Bissell Breakfast, and the biscuits and sausage gravy with eggs and hash browns. Our food came out pretty quickly and maybe, just maybe, it was the long ride talking, but this foodie family likes to taste each other's dishes and we all agreed everything hit. My chicken and waffles came with a strawberry butter. Yep, that was hitting. The cheesy grits with the Bissell Breakfast, hitting. The gravy on the biscuits, also hitting. And that scramble bowl that was loaded with meaty goodness, you guessed it, hitting. Our waitress was super friendly and took great care of us the entire time, which made our meals hit even better. Safe to admit Metro was a 'hitting' first choice on our Raleigh visit.

The menu is large and varied. I wanted both fried chicken and traditional breakfast food and they were able to accommodate both. You order at the counter, and the food is then delivered to your table. I ordered the two-egg breakfast plate with my eggs sunny-side up, with grits (hash browns were also an option) and sausage. I also ordered two buttermilk pancakes. The sunny-side-up eggs were perfectly cooked. I put one egg over the grits and the other on the pancakes, then broke the yolks -- it was delicious. The yolk mixed nicely with the perfectly made grits and fluffy pancakes. It is a small place and was crowded with regulars, which gave it a welcoming neighborhood feel. I am going back to try other plates -- I noticed several people ordering the catfish, and it looked excellent.

Nothing is made from scratch, in house and was all little to no flavor. Perhaps this is why salt shakers were the only seasoning on each table. No hot sauce, no hot peppered vinegar, not even black pepper. Just salt. Fried chicken was your standard Sysco/Bulk pre-breaded run of the mill, drop into fryer and keep hot variety. The mashed taters n gravy were instant and of the cheapest bulk commercial variety as well, and the Mac & cheese? I knew it when I saw it but it was the only other decent side available as my first pick of fried okra was not available. For $25 for two people, I'd hit a Bojangles or Popeyes instead of coming here and actually feel full. Darn shame as I'd had high expectations for this mom & pop place, and truly wanted a real-deal Southern soul food meal which this was absolutely not. Maybe their breakfast options are actually made in-house and better? They would need to do so AND be open by 5 AM if they want to profit rapidly and substantially on the ever-increasing commuter to and from Raleigh transplants because the supper choices? Definitely not Granville County's finest. I'd suggest the owners of The Wilton Grill go work for a week from open to close at Apple Market up near South Boston to see how breakfast, lunch and supper is done. I'll try breakfast if and when they are open for wee hours and the planets align, but I doubt I will come here again for lunch or supper unless there's some soul and seasoning slapped into and on the menu. This was on point with elementary school lunch foods. I will say the styrofoam plates and cups, plastic forks, cup lids and straws were clean. They do accept Apple and Google pay, they also give you the option to tip which, lol, I'm not sure what for. This place could be a gold mine in the right hands.

Even though there were people waiting, it's a large place and people were being taken care of very efficiently, so it was only about 15 minutes for us. Walking in, you can tell Elmo's Diner is steeped into the fabric of Durham's culture, and particularly Duke University. Has the vibe of a place that has been long enjoyed but multiple generations. Once we got seated, service was very efficient and we had hot food in front of us within 15-20 minutes which was excellent, since we had a road trip ahead. We both ordered specials, and I can't 100% remember their names for each. Hers was a lemon blueberry pancake platter, which she would have liked with a strong lemon flavor, but I thought was just right. Mine was a breakfast bowl, but unlike any I've been served before. The base was cornbread, sweet potatoes, and black beans and from there you had eggs, sausage, avocado, red chile sauce, sour cream, and pico. It was truly delicious, and a flavor combination I wasn't sure about when ordering, but after the first bite was totally ready to devour. Nary a bite was left. I would definitely recommend this spot!
