I asked what she recommended and she said the Mexican Breakfast I believe is what it was called. It wasn't a fancy Tex Mex type of a meal, nothing with beaucoup seasoning flair etc but I appreciated the simple authenticity of the meal. It was simple and really hit the spot. Also it was something I never would have ordered if she hadn't recommended it. I would have to agree as another reviewer mentioned, they could REALLY work on making things HOT rather than warm. Especially the coffee. The atmosphere is what you would expect from a mom and pop breakfast place with a reserved booth for staff where they hang out in the corner. I'm not sure if the overall service here improved or not yet tbh but the younger waitress did a much better job than my previous trips and I think they might have read some of the past reviews. I would like to leave 3.5 stars but that's not and option. To be fair I believe the young lady earned them more than 3 stars but I can't give this 4 stars so 3 it is.

The sports bar aspect of the business has been emphasized and the food quality diminished. The food isn't bad, but it's certainly not the standout it used to be. For example, the hamburger steak entre I ordered was okay, but it was $12 for the patty covered in gravy and mushrooms, one side, and "garlic bread." My side was plain rice - no extra brown gravy on it, despite my request - and the garlic bread strips were small. I suppose everything these days is expensive, but it felt underwhelming. I also ordered a cup of the soup of the day: shrimp and corn. My former favorite - I used to visit specifically for that dish - it's now best described as unmemorable. The service was friendly and fine, despite some mistakes. With one room now basically dedicated to the bar and pool tables, there's a more noticeable "sports bar" vibe, though I don't think there were a bunch of TVs in the dining area? I wasn't really paying attention to that. If you're looking for a place to play pool, drink, and eat something decent, sure, this is still a good bet. But if you're just looking to go out and have a great meal in Hammond, Mariner's Inn no longer makes the recommendation list.

I'll eat in a restaurant that has pool tables tucked away in the back, however I most likely wouldn't eat in a pool hall with a restaurant in the back. Friday night when everyone else around you are slammed and you have an empty restaurant maybe try a rewind and just copy what Bruce did for forty years instead of trying to fix what wasn't broken. I can't bring myself to rate Mariners less than a three star but frankly these days that may be generous. Please do better.
