My in-laws catered from Wah Feng for lunch. They bought a lobster dish, a fish dish, two pork dishes, sweet and sour shrimp, empress shrimp, rice, congee, a beef dish, string beans, Cantonesse flat rice noodle, and a beef dish. The shrimp was still very crispy after being brought home. The beef had a very good flavor to it. Overall, the food quality was very good. This makes me want to go back and try more of the menu in the store.

For its category, consider this small and local Chinese takeout only (with a couple of tables to dine in) decent for its fair price and food service. If there was nothing memorable I would have give the usual 3 stars, but it gets 4 stars from me because they consistently have one of the BEST hot and sour soup I've ever tasted. The soup itself is hot and spicy (as it should be hence, the name), and is flavorful and iwith the right ingredients. I always go for the large for a bit more to make the trip worth it, $4.25. Oh and be careful, the soup is always piping hot so you can burn yourself. But that just tells me they have it on the stove and always is freshly made. I always come back here for the soup... mmm mmm good! Believe it or not, nor every place can make great soups and for me, soups says a lot about a place. I'm sure there are some hits and misses on the menu and I can't acclaim to all of them. But I can recommend the Szechuan Shrimp, $6.35, which is a L24 lunch special that comes with an egg roll. I've had that a couple of times and it has not disappoint. The portion is huge for the dollar. The fried rice (with green beans and corn) is plenty and is moist. They have fresh veggies (green bell peppers, broccoli) in their entrees (baby corn and water chestnuts are canned) and the shrimp is huge (you get about 5 pieces) which to me is better than getting the tiny itty bitty ones. Plus, their shrimp doesn't smell. Some Asian places have used shrimp that has a very bad water odor, rbis place does not have that in their shrimp. So for a quick bite (they do cook food very fast so your wait shouldn't be long), this place is a great solution for when you are in the area and looking for some quick Chinese takeout. I spent almost $12 for an individual entree and a large soup that will leave me with at least 1 more meal for leftovers. I'm happy with it and I've been back for more.

Fast and fairly priced -- but that's about the only positive comment I can make. The food is fairly bland as what others have noted -- without much refinement put into textures or colors or shapes or flavor. I tried the General Tsos Chicken and Orange Beef here. With both dishes, I was really unable to tell what the theme was. They were doused in thick gravy, but this didn't translate to a lot of flavor. One positive note though is that they seemed to put effort into using fresh ingredients (chilis, jalapenos, honey, etc.) to flavor their food -- but there really wasn't a lot of flavor that was extracted from this. Both batters were very soft, meat was cut unevenly, and there was no sear to dishes to create some "wok hay". While it is true that Deerfield lacks good choices of Americanized Chinese options, it's worth driving a few more miles to Palatine, Arlington Heights, or Schaumburg with better choices.

Don't let this hole in a wall look fooled, it's a legit place for good basic Chinese food. Because of pandemic, they offer curbside pick up ! They are very careful with food handling to make sure it's safe and healthy. They have a separate WeChat only menu that offers more authentic Chinese dishes. I like that they can reduce sodium and oil if you specify upon ordering. Judy, the owner is very friendly and willing to cater to your needs! Give them a try with this hidden gem !

To clear things up about their dining area, they have 2 small tables outside and 1 small and 2 big tables inside. Small tables - 2 chairs. Big tables - 4 chairs. On weekdays, you don't need to make a reservation. On the weekends due to their limited dine in area, I would recommend a reservation to be safe. You can make a reservation through Google/Yelp or phone call. Parking is easy since it's in a strip mall. There is also a 3% charge if you use plastic. Just a note, I tried looking at their food pictures on their website, but it kind of runs slow. Sometimes it would freeze. I think they need to fix it. I would return here to try other items. I would highly recommend ordering off their Malaysian menu instead of the miscellaneous. Don't order orange chicken or General Tao's chicken. Very cringe because you can get that literally anywhere. Get the Malaysian food because it's hard to find in Illinois. The owner is very sweet and the service is attentive. We ordered lor bak, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, hokkien mee, and kuih talam. Just a FYI, the portions are very generous. For 2 people, I would recommend ordering 2 dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. A pot of tea is $6. -lor bak 5 - I highly recommend this appetizer. It has crispy pork sausage with shrimp fritters, beancurd, and cucumber. It comes with two sauces. Everything was delicious. -nasi lemak 5 - I love the chicken rendang. The meat is very tender and it has a deep flavor. You can taste the spices that went into it. -Hainanese chicken rice 3.5 - I gave Penang Malaysian Cuisine a 4 because the rice was delicious. HD's version, the rice was not as moist and flavorful. The chicken was not bad, it's about the same as Penang's. It could be a bit more succulent without the sauces. -hokkien mee 4 - this won't be as tasty as in Malaysia. I liked the big pieces of shrimp, an adequate amount of sliced pork and hard boiled egg. The broth is still very good. If it's your first time having this, I still recommend it. -kuih talam 5 - I would suggest this if you like pandan. It's not sweet. It has a soft and bouncy texture.

Both the service and quality of food has gone way down from what they were famous for. The waitress spilled my tea, also dipped her finger in my tea, had no apology or offer to exchange it with a fresh cup. I had to ask her for a fresh cup of tea. Then the other server that brought our entrees spilled my husbands tea and again no offering to getting a fresh cup. We had to ask AGAIN for a fresh cup! While the portions were generous, the quality of all the food has gone way down. The special family recipe of thier shrimp dish Gan Pong is nothing but fried shrimp with dried chili peppers and no flavor. The Hunan spicy beef and chicken appeared to be all globs and sticky because of excessive and over use of corn starch used during the cooking process. This dish didn't have any unique flavor that one would expect. Previously we had experienced a difference in the food, taste and quality and that's what kept us returning. Sadly, after this experience I wouldn't recommend it to anyone or come back! I'd rather stick with Yu's Mandarin than drive to this place! Quality always wins over quantity in my books!

The Kung Pao chicken was also super tasty if you like a bit of a kick you might want to ask for some extra spice next time. We also really enjoyed the shrimp fried rice and those yummy egg rolls you get two per order. Just a heads up though the portions for dine in felt a tad on the smaller side especially for the sesame chicken. On the service front it was a bit hit or miss. We found ourselves with empty drink glasses for quite a while and it seemed like the staff mainly came by to take our order and drop off the food. However, there was a really sweet young kid at the register who was super helpful and friendly he definitely brightened things up. Finding the place can be a bit of an adventure. It's tucked away in a cozy corner right next to the grocery store so you really only spot it once you've parked. Oh and a quick tip make sure you don't mix it up with the Korean restaurant nearby. A couple of minor bummer moments the chicken lo mein wasn't quite what we hoped for. The noodles were super thin and crunchy rather than the thicker, chewier kind we expected and sadly they were out of egg drop soup that day which was a shame. Despite a few little things the delicious food definitely makes it worth checking out.

When asked them to make this dish spicy, they didn't seem to think it was possible. It is. That wasn't a good sign, but the dish was good enough to be your $7 lunch special in a pinch. Moo shu chicken was surprisingly good. Not a dish I usually go for but it was rather tasty and reheated well. In summary, this is serviceable, Americanized, Chinese food. She gave me a good description and mentioning it had some spice to it, but not offensive. It was exactly what my husband wanted. It wasn't overly breaded and the sauce was sweeter, savory with a little heat. He was a happy man. The fried rice had plenty of chicken and cooked well. The portions were huge! Takeout was usually ready in just 10 minutes, and they were almost always open, even on major holidays (though it's still a good idea to call ahead to confirm). We dined in once before the pandemic, but since that was more than seven years ago, it wouldn't be fair to review that experience now. We got takeout from Tong's Hunan on this July 4th, mostly because they were open until 8:00 pm even on this holiday.  We ordered a Braised Seafood Casserole ($20.95) and a House Special Pan-fried Noodles ($15.95), both were our go-to dishes.  Another go-to dish that we didn't order this time was Happy Family ($20.95) a combination of beef, shrimp, scallop, chicken and Chinese vegetables stir-fried in their house special brown sauce.  Entrees come with white rice. Tong's Hunan serves what I'd call old-school Chinese-American food. Many dishes rely heavily on brown sauce, which tends to overwhelm the natural flavors of the ingredients. While the food is still decent, many of the dishes end up tasting more alike than different. The pan-fried noodles were crunchy as they should be, but they were very greasy.  Even with the paper liner that they put underneath the noodles to absorb some of the oil, it's still very oily. On the positive side, the meats in both dishes were tender and the shrimp fresh and large.  However, the quality is more like a decent Chinese takeout eatery that's 3.5 stars.  I do like their consistency and convenience. The food is reliably decent, and takeout is usually ready in about 10 minutes. This visit took about 20 minutes, which was understandable given the holiday rush. Being open on major holidays is definitely a big plus.  So, 3.5 rounding up to 4 stars.
