We used to order from Tong's Hunan quite often years ago, not that we loved their food that much, it's more for the convenience. Takeout was usually ready in just 10 minutes, and they were almost always open, even on major holidays (though it's still a good idea to call ahead to confirm). We dined in once before the pandemic, but since that was more than seven years ago, it wouldn't be fair to review that experience now. We got takeout from Tong's Hunan on this July 4th, mostly because they were open until 8:00 pm even on this holiday.  We ordered a Braised Seafood Casserole ($20.95) and a House Special Pan-fried Noodles ($15.95), both were our go-to dishes.  Another go-to dish that we didn't order this time was Happy Family ($20.95) a combination of beef, shrimp, scallop, chicken and Chinese vegetables stir-fried in their house special brown sauce.  Entrees come with white rice. Tong's Hunan serves what I'd call old-school Chinese-American food. Many dishes rely heavily on brown sauce, which tends to overwhelm the natural flavors of the ingredients. While the food is still decent, many of the dishes end up tasting more alike than different. The pan-fried noodles were crunchy as they should be, but they were very greasy.  Even with the paper liner that they put underneath the noodles to absorb some of the oil, it's still very oily. On the positive side, the meats in both dishes were tender and the shrimp fresh and large.  However, the quality is more like a decent Chinese takeout eatery that's 3.5 stars.  I do like their consistency and convenience. The food is reliably decent, and takeout is usually ready in about 10 minutes. This visit took about 20 minutes, which was understandable given the holiday rush. Being open on major holidays is definitely a big plus.  So, 3.5 rounding up to 4 stars. read more

Had dinner with family at Tong's Hunan last night. We had two starters, four entrees and two fried rice sides. All the food was well prepared and presented. Kitchen might have been slammed as one of the entrees took a bit longer to arrive. They have new signage and menus. Hope this brings them additional customers. If you need a fix for basic Chinese food it could do. This heavily depends on the restaurants you're accustomed to dining at. I enjoy authentic eateries because I appreciate the flavor differences. This restaurant has an old school feel and is of a rare breed in current society. For those locals that eat I get it. Unfortunately though for the money there are many competitors that do it better. Folks, ya all know me and how I like to be fair to my precious local restaurants and always want to provide proper advice and hopefully they take the info and step up their game. I so wanted to give them 3 stars but honestly it just couldn't be. Mongolian beef- best of the dishes and was worth a B minus. Lacked that something distinctive to qualify for a solid choice. Beef was good and not chewy. Fair size dish for the price. Chicken Chow Fun - C. Found interesting celery in there which is a unique veggie when not ordering chop suey. Asked for well done noodles and got soft ones with no evidence of a crunchy edge. Flavor, hmm. Wish I had chili oil so at least it would have been spicy. Egg rolls- total disappointment. Flavor was a D. Size was good. I've rarely said pass on any Chinese appetizers and this was a pass. Hot and sour soup - F! Dishwater was only slightly worse. Zero flavor. We dumped it back into the container. See my image. I didn't have the heart to throw it away. We will do so in a day or two. Perhaps the flavors needed to marry more or at all. I was craving salt and pepper fish fillet. But while looking up restaurants around me, I came across this restaurant instead. I've had Hunan fish fillet before and I saw that they had it, so I wanted to give this restaurant a try! I really liked the dish! The fish tasted fresh, it had a good soy sauce flavor and also a hint of sweetness as well. I kind of wish that the fish was more crispy, but I do think the sauce is what made it taste really really good! The vegetables were also very crunchy and added a more texture overall. I would definitely support this small business again and try something new! :) read more

They are hot and sour soup was excellent, and unlike most that I have had in the past. The lettuce cups were beautifully served and very easy to eat even as a main dish without the lettuce. The shrimp and lobster sauce was so beautifully presented with vegetables, mushrooms, and delicious shrimp. I certainly will order it again. read more

There were people dining in the restaurant so it looked like a neighborhood favorite. When I left all the tables were full. This was my second choice because Munich Chinese restaurant was full. The first time I came here I would've given it four stars. That was at lunchtime and I felt like the portions were larger and they were not charging extra for every little thing. This time I went for dinner and they were going to charge almost $3.00 for a teabag and no white rice came with our meal. We would have to pay for that. The walnut chicken was excellent with a Very smooth and slightly sweet sauce. The pan fried noodles were crisp but not greasy. The mu shu pork was also delicious. I'll be coming back! Used to be a good place. I asked if the two crab rangoons on the lunch special could be exchanged for a cup of soup. I was told no. So, I ordered some hot and sour soup, and wouldn't again, as it was bland. The lunch came with only one crab Rangoon instead of the two on the menu. No tea was given or even offered. Went here a few times. They make fresh food and it's good that meals come with a decent amount of vegetables even meals like mapo tofu which typically doesn't. It certainly makes this place a little more health conscious so that's definitely good. They have as stated mapo tofu, a hunan style tofu and some other vegetarian dishes. They sadly don't have vegetarian soup as even the vegetable soup is made with chicken broth. So I'd really like to see that changed. I don't see why it can't be made with vegetable broth or even water and let the vegetables cooked in it create a flavor. Overall flavor of the dishes I'd say is decent. Not amazing but decent. Not bad prices, comfortable and casual but nice atmosphere when able to eat in. Not too bad on packaging and good at listening when we say no utensils or soy sauce packets. All and all a solid option when looking for basic Chinese food and wanting something a bit healthier any/or vegetarian options. read more

I would never never never send anybody to this restaurant not even my worst enemy!! We arrived after the Saturday nite dinner rush, the menu itself was filthy- water was thrown down on the table and waitress ( who turned out to be the owner) was very rude and clearly annoyed with all the past customers- we ordered wonton soup - was cold, never offered drinks or tea - over heard a table next to us - she said it was $3.15 for tea and what she brought out was a Lipton tea bag in a tea cup- we ordered egg foo yong, patties were the size of a silver dollar... covered in overcook broccoli and slices of pork the actual pattie's were runny scrambled eggs on the inside and over fried on the outside with our any pork- pork fried rice was old and dry - shrimp lobster sauce was just plain bad inedible- gross but had to spit the shrimp out of our mouth- yuck!! She never check back in on us to see how our meal was or if we need anything we took a break from talking she came back around and immediately thru three to go boxes on our table- i aside we are still "working " - she got all snarky and stormed away... dishes were never cleared- needless to say we split the bill between the two of us and left her under 10% - she then proceeded to chase us in the parking lot screaming about her tip I told her the food was awful service was awful- Who screams at gas in a parking lot?? The absolute worst Asian restaurant on "the planet". We had dinner there a few nights ago, and it was not only awful, but they are trying to save a buck. They won't even give you a tea bag in the hot water, oh, but they will for a charge. The prices have gone up while their food is atrocious. Empty tables when we arrived, yet we had a 15 minute wait, and another 20 minute wait for service(including getting a glass of water) once we sat down. Am basing this review on only three items ordered at lunch. First off the place is packed at lunchtime from business people from surrounding area offices. The lunch menu is a great deal between $8 and $12 I believe for a cup of soup, an eggroll (or was it a crab wonton?) and then fried rice with your choice of something like 20 different entrées on the plate. We ordered off of the regular dinner menu had two eggrolls which were nicely crispy and had good flavor. The Chinese hot mustard was blazing hot and cleared my nasal passages! Five stars for the eggrolls. The chicken and shrimp shumai had good flavor and were quite lean, they were a little tough because they lacked fat but they did have a good flavor. We are more used to pork shumai which tend to be much more tender and obviously higher in fat. They were steamed and served on to cabbage leaves and there were I believe six in the portion so they were roughly $1 a piece. Three and a half stars for the shumai. Then we ordered their version of general Tso's chicken which they call governors chicken. The chicken pieces had a very heavy batter, they were somewhat crispy but not as crispy as they could have been and then things fell apart after that. There were maybe 10 total pieces of vegetables - A good thing for vegetable haters - three each of green and red peppers and three small slices of onion and three of those long baby corns. The sauce had way too much vinegar, not enough garlic and not enough spice. It was laden with cornstarch which gave it a cloyingly thick texture and the sweetness was too much as well. Walking out to make a phone call I did see some delicious looking plates on other peoples tables - Mongolian beef that looked like it had really nice thin slices of scallions and some beef with broccoli at another table. If you want great eggrolls order them from here. Unfortunately I cannot recommend their governors chicken. read more

The two stars have solely to do with the service. I'd give the food four stars. I've been a fairly regular Tong's customer for many years. I eat there a couple of times a month, sometimes more. I love their won ton soup, egg rolls, fried rice, and many of their entrees. However, a recent incident with their waitstaff has made me reconsider being a dine-in customer and become a take-out guy only. Two of my friends and I dine out for lunch on a weekly basis. We go to different restaurants in the northern suburbs, and since the three of us were very familiar with Tong's, we decided that it would be our lunch place for that week. We ordered off the lunch special menu, which includes soup and a crab rangoon. Since we were all fans of the hot and sour soup, we all ordered it. Two of us received full bowls of soup, while the third guy was only given a half bowl. When he POLITELY mentioned this to the waiter, the waiter rudely and abruptly reached across the table and snatched the bowl away, nearly spilling the contents on my friend. This was unprofessional, and totally uncalled for. At that point, the three of us discussed the possibility of paying for our soups and leaving the restaurant. Five minutes later, a new, and full, bowl of soup was brought to my friend. From that point on, the service at our table slowed to a crawl. Another employee, the manager we believe, brought us the check. There were no offers to refill our beverages. The bus staff did a nice job clearing the table at the end of our meal, but we didn't receive any more visits from the troublesome waiter...which may have been a good thing looking back in retrospect. Everyone, including waiters and waitresses, have good days and bad days. But when a simple request for a full bowl of soup is met with such hostility and unprofessional behavior, that's not good for anyone involved. As a result of this incident, two things are certain: 1) the three of us won't dine in their dining room any more, either individually or collectively. 2) while I still will be a customer, because the food is so good, I will limit my business to carry out only. It's too bad that this incident with the waiter affected our decision not to dine in at Tong's anymore. If you want great food, for carryout, then Tong's is a great choice. Or if you're one of those people who enjoy surly waiters, and get a tingle up your spine at the prospect of possibly having hot soup spilled in your lap, then Tong's would be a wise choice for you too. read more

This place is SO ghetto - and I love it... LOL This is one of the local business lunch places. It's TINY, so you kinda have to get there early to get a table. This place is kidna like a production line, they try to get people in and out so fast. And they're not really friendly, kindly rude, to be honest. The waiters like barely understand English. And they don't care to. They come by and try to rush you in to ordering. They don't ask if you want anything to drink, you have to specifically ask. The food comes and you eat. The food is decent, but the best part is that the prices are really reasonable. This is why it's a busy lunch place: good prices and in & out service. The food is OK. Not great. But not horrible. * Servers (5 stars--think Jimmy John fast). This restaurant is the House of the Five Servers. Different servers come each step of the way. One server turned out to be our designated recipient of the 'No MSG' request, our several requests for that. Being a savvy order taker, he announced there was no MSG at all for anything. The six of us stayed in control of our table's destiny by not ordering until we were ready. (3 waiter visits and turn-aways for him until the fourth). This is another way of saying that the wait staff views speed to be of the essence. (I wonder if restaurants have customer reviews: 'Good tippers, slow on the MSG info, possible table hoggers'). * Appetizers (2 stars). That is, I dissent from the Yelp highlights-- do forget the egg-rolls--they are not amazing! At least on a Sunday evening around 5 o'clock. (My contrarian view to what is summarized from others). Besides the egg roll, we shared sizzling rice soup which was tepid and not sizzling. Might they make appetizers in advance to serve super freaky fast? * Entrees (4 stars). Let me explain this part. The key to this restaurant I think is sticking to the main courses (very good, 4 stars) and shying away from the appetizers (soup and egg rolls). 3 of our group of six shared three entrees--the spice crew it would appear. Beef with broccoli, Kung Pao Chicken and a Spicy shrimp of some sort--good spiciness, not scorching (two diners had been to China and felt spice was extreme there; this was good). The non-sharers with more demanding dietary focus, each seem pleased with their order. One had fried rice, and another the mu shu. Very reasonably priced. After years of coming here on new years, I was upset with their behavior tonight. Love the food. Always have and they served quickly BUT they were rushing me and my family out of the restaurant even when they barely had 3 tables seated. They came to our table at least 8 times over the course of 15 minutes asking if we're done yet. They brought the bill and asked us 30 seconds later "you paying yet?" And did this 2 or 3 times. To top it all off we felt disrespected and left a 13% tip and then they complained to me about the tip. The waitress asked, "only 5$, are you serious?" Totally unprofessional and unacceptable. This place is definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area. We've tried several locations nearby and this is the only one that we've gone back to. Have been coming here pick up food in the past 23 years, egg rolls is always fresh and crunchy, sizing rice soup or wonton soup it is must try, house special fried rice with beef and broccoli, sesame chicken are always delicious. Very disappointed. We have eaten in the restaurant twice and the food was pretty good for suburban Chinese. We carried out on Christmas Day and the food was pretty awful. Understood..... They were swamped. Pick up time was 1.5 hours after ordering (not a biggie) Our order was egg rolls (they were mushy and seemed old),chicken lo mein (where's the chicken?), chicken fried rice (dry and seemed like it was sitting around for awhile), Orange Chicken (chicken was not inside some of the pieces, sauce was good and not spicy at all), egg fu Yung (Very weird, patties were basically egg (very limited bean sprouts and other ingredients, tasted blah). Worst was the chicken lo mein...it was a generous portion of noodles and very limited vegetables...we looked hard for the chicken. We understood they were swamped as not a whole lot of Chinese restaurants were open on Christmas Day but c'mon.....for $46.00, the food should be at least passable. read more

Okay I've ordered Chinese take out here just two times and both were pretty good experiences. The one time I called they weren't super busy so it was very easy and this last time was on Christmas when all the Jews decide they want Chinese food at the same time. I had called around 3ish and she told me she was hoping people could come at 7:30 and I was like no that wasn't going to work for my very hungry toddlers so she was able to accommodate a 4:30pm slot which worked much better for us. We seriously ordered a bunch of things from veggie spring rolls to Crab ragoons, to entrees including kung pao beef, sesame chicken, mongolian beef and shrimp fried rice. The favorite and must try here are the shrimp fried rice as it is delicious here with a lot of good flavor and decent size shrimp to add. The sesame chicken was okay, not my favorite as the actual chicken was a little on the large side and the mongolian beef was a little salty. So overall, quality of the food is pretty good, it's definitely not the best Chinese I've ever had but consider I eat it once a year this place is definitely a good go to for that. I will definitely be back when I'm craving my Chinese food as the prices are decent for the area and I like that the ladies were accommodating to my schedule since she could have easily turned us down.
