Stopped in on my trip to Wheeling from Milwaukee. Wasn't feeling the best and just wanted some soup. Met Daniel, who is the sweetest man!! He asked me if I wanted some tea while I waited so I said sure. He gave me a cup of tea and some cookies. What a very kind gesture. My order came up and he told me to take my time and enjoy my tea. It was exactly what I needed. He and I chatted a bit and he found out I'm staying at a hotel this week and loaded my bag with more tea, a can of soda and some suckers. Sure made me feel better. Before I decided on coming to this place I called and asked if they use MSG. The person I spoke to, Mary said... yes and no They could prepare what I wanted without MSG. I ordered a spicy basil chicken with cilantro, bell peppers, green beans and pea pods. It was delicious. Tried Chinese Munch In based on the reviews and some feedback from friends in the area. I have been on the hunt for the elusive delicious Hong Kong style egg roll made with peanut butter. Since places like 7 Treasures, Kow Kow, and Mee Mah have closed and places like Wing Wah have changed hands and therefore, recipes, it's been harder to find an egg roll filled with ingredients (not mostly cabbage) and that touch of peanut butter to make the taste unique. Unfortunately, this wasn't a place that lived up to the reviews for me. Service was friendly and welcoming. The family owned restaurant has dine in and the inside was warm and inviting, kinda making me think of a 1980's/1990's Chinese-American restaurant- someplace I grew up eating and working at. A place a take out order on Friday and was given the 15 minute window to pick up. We ordered egg rolls, shrimp fried rice, and beef and vegetable chow fun. I was super excited to try this hoping it would be our next go-to take out place. Unfortunately, our meal fell short. The fried rice and chow fun were salty. When I opened the rice and chow fun containers and both were mostly dark in color, I knew it would be salty. Tasting it confirmed my suspicion. Aside from the salty, there was a decent amount of shrimp and beef in the order which we appreciated. The egg rolls kind of disappointed- they were filled with mostly cabbage and minimal pork and shrimp. The wrapper was on the chewier side, still crispy, but thicker chewy. Overall, it was just an OK meal. Nothing I'd go out of the way to order and not necessarily a place to fill my cravings for Chinese American food. Maybe my expectations are high having grown up eating at the Americanized Chinese restaurants or having worked at a couple for over a decade? I wouldn't discourage you from trying this family owned restaurant, but if you're looking for egg rolls or Chinese food based on some of the previously mentioned restaurants, Chinese Munch In is definitely different. read more

I ordered from here a second time because even though we ate here a couple weeks ago, I honestly couldn't remember almost anything about the place. The one thing I could remember is that the sauce container for the sweet and sour chicken hadn't been properly closed so the sweet and sour sauce spilled on literally everything in the bag. Sadly, this second visit wasn't any better. On the plus side, the sauce wasn't spilling everywhere. In the extremely negative side, the pork fried rice we ordered had shrimp in it! What is that about?? I had hoped it was a single shrimp that maybe got included from a prior order, and then we found a second and thought all was well. But then when I went to dish some up for myself, I found several other pieces of shrimp. I checked the slip and it says pork fried rice, so I don't know what the deal is about. Given that this is the second careless order we've had from them (out of two!), the relatively expensive price point for a portion, and that it's at least a 20 minute drive each way, I'm not going to bother giving them a try again. read more

Picked up to go. Smaller, family run restaurant. I think I may have ordered the wrong thing but I think I got the beef lo mien instead of the pan fried noodles. It was overall very good. Nice looking little place. We tried it based on some advice from people we know. Well, it's Chinese food but not something I'm running back for. I've had worse. this was middle of the road Chinese. Dishes were decent size but a little light on the meats. Egg rolls were decent and I definitely tasted the peanut butter in them. Not as good as others in the area. Fried rice was the best dish and that was fair. Hong Kong chow fun was mostly flavorless. I really wanted to find a new place for Chinese and it's just not that place folks. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and may have finally found the Best Egg Roll in Chicagoland! Since our former go-to Chinese place closed over 20 years ago we have been searching for an Excellent Egg Roll and finally have found it here. The crispy wrapper had the perfect density, fry and tasty,not mushy, filling. It greasy or flimsy it was what we had hoped for. Crab Rangoon also came in that small envelope but was a bit too creamy for me. Main courses were above average and we enjoyed the chicken sczechaun with a hint of spiciness. The Mongolian beef was only average but the egg foo young was the second excellent surprise of the evening. Service hasn't been this good for years with everyone from papa to mom and the waitresses were all pleasant and helpful. Surprises included a gratis plate of Filipino egg rolls and almond cookies to take home. It's not a fancy place but very clean and bright. We definitely will return! read more

A few years ago we moved from the Arlington Heights area where we were big fans of Yen Yen. While there is no shortage of Chinese restaurants near our new place none have been a great replacement for Yen Yen. That's until we found out about Chinese Munch In. Two different people recommended the restaurant to us. The restaurant is in a strip shopping center that has seen better times. When you walk into the restaurant it's a small dining room that looks recently updated. The service is attentive and friendly. We started with an order of egg rolls which have that thick crispy outside and has a hint of peanut butter on the inside. The only downside was the egg rolls were served piping hot and we had to wait to be able to eat them without burning ourselves. The mustard sauce has a strong horseradish bite to it. It was good but watch out! We also ordered potstickers, which did not disappoint. I love potstickers that are a bit doughy which these were. They were served on a plate of greens which made for a nice presentation. For our main courses we tried the sesame chicken and pork pancit. Munch In's menu contains many items you'd find at most Chinese restaurants plus a small offering of Filipino and Thai dishes. We enjoyed both of our dishes however we were unable to finish the sizable portions so we took them home. I'm going to get three meals out of the pancit. As usual a pot of complimentary tea was at the table and at the end of the meal we were given fresh almond cookies and fortune cookies. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and will be back! read more

We weren't in our own territory today and needed a bite for late lunch and good old Yelp brought us here after striking out at 2 of our favorite locations. We love chinese food and this little place has some of the best ever! We wish it was close to us. The smells when you walk in the door is that classic chinese food that you are looking for. It is cute and fairly typical. It was busy as heck, so the locals must know the quality. The lunch specials were so cheap! We got the chicken with cashews, chicken egg foo yung, lemon chicken, and garlic chicken. All of them were fantastic, and cravable in some cases. They all come with fried rice and soup. Hot and sour and egg drop were both an amazing start. We also got egg rolls, and they are the best I have had in a decade. So delicious. Cruising Yelp reviews when I stumbled upon a Chinese restaurant that puts peanut butter in their egg rolls and realized it was down the street. Ordered the peanut butter egg rolls with some fried rice and everything was pretty decent. The egg rolls smelled a little like peanuts, but was hoping of something more like a Thai dish with actual peanuts. Chicken fried rice was OK and a bit dry for my liking. 09/27/22 - I've been dying to try this place ever since my sister told me about it. Chinese Munch In is located on the NW corner of Wolf Road & Camp McDonald in Wheeling. I grew up in Mt Prospect 5 mins from here & worked @ 2 grocery stores that use to be in the strip mall back in the day that are long gone. There use to be a Family Video that's now a pizza store. I guess it's a sign O da times, constantly changing & evolving Chinese Munch In has been nicely remodeled from The previous restaurant. They have a great selection of Chinese Food, Filipino food & Thai food. We ordered way too much food for 3 people (but then you have leftovers lol). My sister ordered hot & sour soup, egg rolls & crab Rangoon (compliments of the owner Danny). She also ordered shrimp w/lobster sauce, chicken pad Thai, beef chow fun (noodles cooked very well done we like them crispy) & lechon kawali (deep fried pork belly). You think that's enough food for 3 people soup, egg rolls, crab Rangoon, Like I said after we gorged ourselves we split the leftovers into 2 packages and enough for dinner for my wife & myself and for my sister and friend. The service was outstanding & the owner & his wife are super friendly. The food is very good w/excellent owners & server (I should have gotten her name. I have to update this review. I always give restaurant a second chance. They go from a 2 to a 5 with me. They are now my favorite Oriental food restaurant. I like them as much as I like Alt Thai in Arlington Heights and Bid Bowl. (Big Bowl has excellent cauliflower rice). They are friendly, service is excellent, take out orders are on time, food is excellent esp their homemade hot mustard (they won't tell me the recipe) and the price is right. This place turned a bad experience into a good experience. That's how you survive in the restaurant business. I first ordered Hunan beef like I do at all Chinese restaurants. I've never had one I didn't like, but this one was sweet and not my cup of tea. I ate a very small amount and asked for the check nicely. She asked if something was wrong. I just said it was too sweet and told her not to worry about it. I'll just take a to go container for the rice only. I was still going to pay for it and not complain. She suggested the Mongolian beef. I said sure I'll try just a little dish of it. I already had an egg roll and some Hunan beef, so I was full. Tucked away at the corner of a shopping center, this hidden gem isn't exactly easy to find, and the exterior suggests that this is just one of many Americanized Chinese restaurants in the area. However, when you go in for an experience, you'll realize that this place is better than what outside appearances may suggest. I first came across this place on Yelp, when I was looking to try something a little different. In particular, Thai, Fillipino, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Malaysian, or Indonesian Cuisine. To my surprise, I came across Chinese Munch In which covered two of the cuisines I was looking for. I hadn't realized that this place had changed owners so I was a bit surprised when I got in and the place looked neatly remodeled (from Classic China). With this came a big upgrade in the food quality as well. Food here is very competitive to New Golden Dragon for big portion sizes, generous amounts of meat, distinct textures, strong flavors, and a wide selection of menu items. Their approach to the same dishes is so different though, that getting food at each spot guarantees some variety. Service is also quick and friendly and the dining room, while smaller, does have a more modern look that you'd expect to see in somewhere like Chinatown. Prices are fair given the amount of meat you get and the generous portion sizes. Instead of loading up dishes with lots of cheap vegetables, the ratio of main protein to filler is quite good and noticeable with every bite. Here's my thoughts on some of the dishes I tried. Lumpia Shanghai - If you like lots of meat and lots of crispy fried dough, this is similiar to the Vietnamese eggroll where you're only getting the tastiest parts of the dish. This comes in a generous helping of 12 pieces and is delightfully crispy and flavorful. Lechon Kawali - This was probably the main reason I searched for this restaurant in the first place and it did not disappoint. The pork is fried nicely with good crispy skin and the portion size is surprisingly large. It's a great alternative for anyone looking for Chinese roast pork for celebration or ancestor worship purposes. Sweet and sour chicken - This is a very deep fried, crisp, and sweet version (and definitely not healthy) that is difficult to find around Chicagoland. I believe the extra fluffiness is created by using potato starch which holds up well against the thicker sauce without making it soggy. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed. Combination fried rice - Not too different from a yang chow fried rice with bbq pork, carrots, peas, onion, shrimp, egg, and chicken. There's a nice light touch of wok hay with the way that the soy sauce and edge of the proteins are seared. Chicken pad thai - A bit light on sauce, with an approach that draws out the flavors of the onion, peppers, and green onion a bit more. Would've preferred it to be a bit more saucy with more crushed peanuts, egg, and cilantro, but it wasn't bad either. Wonton soup - Bit better than expected, with two large pork filled wontons. Nice filling alternative to egg drop soup. Egg rolls - Competitive to some of the best in the area. Yen Yen, new Golden Dragon, Noodles Delight, Bin Hai, and others are also very good as well. What makes this version stand out is the generous amount of BBQ pork and Shrimp compared to cabbage instead. This gives it a more savory feeling than some other approaches. While there is no criteria really for what makes the best egg roll, as some have more peanut butter flavor, some use larger shrimp, some have more interesting fillings, they're all crispy and enjoyable at the great suburban Americanized Chinese restaurants. Fried Shrimp - Fried pretty nicely, though it feels a little overcooked when not paired with some extra sauce Crab Rangoon - Fried nicely, with a very generous amount of filling. As this is more than double the amount of filling than you'd expect, be careful when biting in as it'll be more crab meat cream cheese than you're used to. Mongolian beef - Bit spicy with a strong onion flavor and a fairly generous amount of meat. Pretty good for a cold weather comfort food. Overall, great choice for delicious Americanized Chinese (and Thai and Filipino) food with generous portions at a good price. read more

This was substandard Chinese food. Teriyaki beef tastes like it came out of a bottle. Wontons were crackers. Shrimp was overly breaded. Mongolian beef had heat but not flavor. Egg rolls consisted of odd flavors and some vaguely meat like substance. The only thing that was ok was the lemon chicken. Sauce tasted like it came from a jar. One carton of rice and teriyaki beef was poured over rice so rice was soggy. All in all, this was a sad, expensive dinner. We will not be back. read more
