    Puget Island Ferry history
    Richie D.

Did you know an island called Puget Island exists? Or that there's a ferry which crosses the Columbia River connecting Washington and Oregon? Well now you do! Perhaps because it's the last remaining ferry on the Lower Columbia River! While there's next to nothing to see on Puget Island, it's a fun detour while making the drive to/from I-5 Longview or Kelso and Astoria or Long Beach. A fun adventure for kids and adults alike. It runs between Puget Island, Washington (a few minutes from Cathlamet) to Westport, Oregon. While on the Oregon side of the Columbia, have the kids peek into the marshy forests where 2 Sasquatch lurk and a shipwreck can be sighted. Hang on when pulling up to the dock because the ferry will do a 180 degree spin on the water. Cost: Cars under 20 feet cost $5.00 without an extra fee for passengers. Walk-ons cost $1.00 (although there's not much on either side of the Columbia). Timing: The ferry runs hourly between 5 am and 10 pm. It leaves WA on the hour and OR 15 minutes after the hour. The total crossing time is just under 10 minutes. The ship holds about 15 cars total. On your next trip to the Coast, take a new adventurous route via the "Oscar B."

For a fun detour on the trip from Astoria to Portland, take a ride on the Westport-Cathlamet Ferry. All aboard! The $5 price can't be beat and the ferry operators are friendly and knowledgable. The Puget Island end is a bit creepy at night - the burned out house and pedophile RV parked outside really set the mood - but otherwise this is a charming detour. And keep your eyes peeled for Bigfoot!

Not much to add to the rest of the revies, fun little side trip and always makes me glad I took the time when going to/from the coast.

3 1/2 Stars - This is a difficult review to write…read more May 22, 2026 we went on our third Portland Spirit Cruise. We upgraded to the "Admiral Package," as this was a special Rose Festival Cruise, concluding with a fireworks display. The cruise itself was wonderful. The live piano music is a lovely enhancement, and the atmosphere was buoyant ;-). Every staff member was a delight and the captain is charming. But - The Food: Our appetizers were interesting, Mr. Wonderful ordered the Shrimp Cocktail and said it was alright. I had the Cheese Platter, some of the cheeses were hard, (as in dried out) and the crostini was *overly hard, bordering on stale. The salads were good, the dressing delicious. For our mains, I ordered the pasta dish. I took perhaps four bites and stopped eating. The pasta was far beyond al dente, the vegetables were almost unrecognizable - it lacked flavor or texture. Mr. Wonderful ordered the Beef Short ribs, and was happy with his meal. I'm going to chalk this up to me ordering incorrectly. Table clearing was another issue, our bread tray and appetizer plates remained on the table far too long. When our main courses were delivered, there was no room. We ordered our desserts and coffee. We received our coffee about 10 minutes afterwards. Then we watched as our server, served a large table next to us their desserts and a couple of other tables nearby. He may have been overwhelmed as this deck was extremely busy. Anyway, after waiting 20 plus minutes more, we requested our dessert, again. Cold coffee and dessert = not great. Our meal service from start to finish was disorganized. Viewing the fireworks from the top deck was a treat! We enjoy cruising with Portland Spirit and will do so again, but we would *not purchase the upgrade. Hint: Request (and pay for) a window seat on the *second deck, as the views are much more desirable.

People sit sideways on the small bench so there is little room in order to see out. Without headphones you can't hear the narration so it just becomes a boat ride. I wouldn't do this again.

Washington state has enough money for highway sweepers to clean up the debris and glass on all highways. I have provided a picture of their highway and what it looks like on 167. WSDOT DO BETTER! I also got notification that you were supposed to fix the roadway on 186 or 183rd St. in Puyallup and you have not done that yet. I followed up 1 week after the call and she let me know she would have something to me in a week. This was February 10th and the last I have heard since. Since February 10th, I have been unable to get a response from her or the company about the travel plan. I sent multiple kind emails asking for a timeline, left voicemails and spoke to the person who answered the main phone pleading for someone to call me back. Against my better judgement, I still stuck with it thinking they were helping me. A full month later, I have still not received an ounce of communication and we are having to move onto a different company. It is putting our family in a bad situation and now is a month of time wasted. I have no idea why this agent "ghosted me" and is refusing the event reply to an email or call me back. A simple, "I am still working on it" or "it turns out I don't have the bandwidth to handle your request" email would have sufficed, however I can't event get that from her or the company. It is really disappointing and very unprofessional. This is my first experience with a travel agent in over 20 years and it was disappointing to say the least. I'd caution you on using Willamette International Travel if this is the way they feel the need to treat their customers. I can't imagine this happening if a problem with a flight or hotel reservation would come up, you would be on your own to figure it out.
