I've been wanting to try Wahpepah's Kitchen since it opened! I love trying Native American cuisines, and this is so easy to find, just right in Fruitvale Plaza right in front of the Fruitvale BART station. Service was friendly and prompt. I came walking in on a Friday afternoon with no reservation around 1pm, and was promptly seated and told I can sit anywhere I want. Portions are HUGE! That surprised me, and everything was worth the price. I enjoyed: Bison steak--steak is delicious, gamey, and chewy. The elderberry vinaigrette was delicious. Whatever I didn't finish for the salad, I ate it up with the frybread. The potato wedges were sooooo bomb! Frybread--I'm a sucker for flatbreads in any cuisine (like the Chinese/Taiwanese scallion pancakes, Indian naan, Middle Eastern pita, Ethiopian injera, etc), so despite the frybread's controversial and traumatic history (google to learn more), this is a must-order for me at any Native American establishment. Methiikwaki Piipihskihii (Cornbread)--Northern ute corn bread, with a side of maple cream. The blue cornbread was delish! Even though this is listed as a side, I finished this last for dessert. Restroom is outside, which is a bit of a hassle. I will definitely be returning to Wahpepah's Kitchen for more!

Last two years we've driven from Santa Rosa for my son's birthday and it's always worth it. The bison fry bread tacos are amazing the fry bread is warm and fluffy with just the right crisp on the outside. The bison steak with blueberry sauce was delicious; I tried a piece and it was tender and well balanced. My son loves bison, and this is his favorite spot. We'll definitely be back. Service is good and the ambiance is casual. Would love to see some fry bread desserts added to the menu that's the one thing missing.

I have enjoyed this eatery's food on two separate occasions and both experiences were great! The first was at the 2-Spirit Festival at Fort Mason where they had a tent selling fry bread tacos. That was the perfect meal for the chilly day and I immediately fell in love with fry bread! My second experience was at the restaurant location in Oakland where I was able to try more items from their menu. I came with another vegan friend and we both enjoyed every dish! I highly recommend if you like fresh ingredients in your food.

Love the bison soup and meatballs. Everything has a pure and clean taste to it. No msg no added fake flavor enhancement - no mysterious fillers. I can't say enough good about the food. Bison in the soup was tender and the vegetables perfectly cooked. Not overly salty - just perfect. The bison meatballs were so flavorful too. No fluff, no filler - just pure meat - very, very special. If you are used to McNuggets it might be shocking what real food tastes like. The blueberry sauce it came with was bright and colorful and full of flavor. The cornbread a bit different and so soft it crumbled so easily. Beyond the excellent quality food is a friendly family that runs the restaurant. Fast, efficient and friendly - in a very warm and welcoming space. Eat inside or out on the patio or do take out like I did. It is convenient to Fruitvale Bart - in fact it is the closest store to the exit of the Bart train. If you are in the neighborhood before 2pm be sure and stop by.

This food is incredibly unique, delicious, and inspired. I wish more like this place existed and that it had a dinner service here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the art in the restaurant is unique. Every dish offers something new and great care is taken to respect and highlight culture and care for sustainability and the environment. It's very conveniently located next to the bart station too so please consider here next time you go out! I can't recommend it enough!

Everything here is fantastic. We got the three sisters bowl, the deer stew, salmon tostada, and the mushroom tacos. We also got the fry bread and acorn crepe. The two drink options were also very delicious :) it was a good combo of trying very different things off the menu to get a good tasting of what they have to offer.

Wahpepah's has been on my list for a while and I'm glad we finally did. We ordered the Mushroom Pumpkin Seed Mole, the Bison Frybread Taco, and the Blue Corn Mush. The pumpkin seed mole was rich, the mushrooms had good char on them, and the corn tortillas that came with were nice and soft. Overall, the flavor was a bit on the lighter side and I would've personally preferred a dash more seasoning in general. I ended up leaning pretty heavily on the chili oil and hot sauce that came with the frybread taco to give it the extra kick. Husband really enjoyed the frybread itself (how could you go wrong with fried dough?), but said he wished there was more bison meat. We both quite enjoyed the blue corn mush, which was just the right amount of sweetness. It was basically like the dessert version of polenta and rounded out the meal nicely. Both of us were worried at first that there wouldn't be enough food, but the richness of the meal really stuffs you up by the end. Environment was pretty relaxed overall and service was attentive and prompt. Parking was tough -- we were looking for close to 30 minutes. If you can take the BART there, I'd definitely recommend it.

This was the first time I've been to a Native American restaurant. I love Native American frybread and bison, both which are served here. I had the bison frybread taco. That was really good. The frybread made to perfection. The prices are reasonable especially considering how much food is on a plate. The service was great. The restaurant is located in a small mall, adjacent to the Fruitvale BART station. Parking. Good luck! I parked in a garage around the corner. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

I have been wanting to coming here for years and finally made it! There are so few indigenous restaurants around. The bison tacos were incredible. I got them on the recommendation of the server - I was planning on getting the fry bread tacos, but I'm so glad I got these. The tortillas were like nothing I've had before and were incredible! The bison flavor was amazing, too. The corn silk tea and potato taquitos were interesting but not my favorites, personally. Not bad just not to my taste.

What a food experience! First off, we didn't even drive here, we just took the Bart and it was right outside of the Fruitvale exit. So that's a huge plus. We did make reservations because there were four of us and it does get busy because they are only open for a short timeframe. In any case, onto the food! We got there a few minutes early and we got seated right away. The only thing about our seats was that the majority of it was in the sun and that day, the sun was sunning (super bright!). The decor was simple and if you sit near the wall with the display, you can read and look at things. The servers were all so friendly and they didn't bother us much. They brought water when they saw that we were running out so they were definitely attentive. We ordered two sides and five entrees. The sides were Ohpeniya (Potato Wedges), which were pretty good since there were various types of potatoes. It was also soft in the inside and crunchy on the outside. The dipping sauce was like a chili oil but not spicy. We also got the Manoomini (Hand Harvested Wild Rice Fritters). These were so so good. I wished it was a meal because it was cooked well and the flavor was excellent. Nothing was overpowering one and the crema was excellent sauce to dip the fritter in. Would definitely order this again. As for the mains, I got the Chaakisii Memeethaki (Salmon Tostada). This was huge. It's so filling because of the potato that was in there. Btw, the potato was basically a chunky mash and I loved it because it gave another texture to the dish. There wasn't much salmon on it but the amount I got, it was cooked well and properly. I wish there was a bit more salmon. Also, even with the heavy toppings on top, the tostada kept its crunch. It didn't get soggy at all. This was a really great dish. The other entrees that were ordered were the Three Sisters Veggie Bowl (I didn't try it but it looked so good), Miisiikwaa Keetaheehi (bison fry bread taco), Chipaeesiihooni Aapikooni (Wild native mushroom pumpkin seed mole). The mole was very mild and while it all worked together with all the items in the bowl, this was just okay for me. Overall, the food was excellent. The other dishes, from what I've been told, were also very very delicious. I wish I did try the fry bread but I got full with the two sides and my tostada. I would definitely come back again because of the different options that they had. I do like that they have a lot of dishes that are vegetarian friendly. Love it here, I need to go back already!

After finding an indigenous food restaurant via a friend's recommendation, I'm happy to say I made a trek here. There's a lot of things on the menu that could be challenging and a few more approachable options. But you do get a selection of new flavors and cooking that you're just not going to find elsewhere. From bison tacos to fry bread, it's all just a really great and fresh flavor waiting to be had. Don't miss the hibiscus tea either.

A small group of us came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and we each ordered something different. We had the Kickapoo chili with fry bread, a bison fry bread taco, the steak and fries, a salmon tostada, the Three Sisters Veggie Bowl, and the wild mushroom and pumpkin seed mole. Of course we had to try each others' dishes to taste everything; is this a female trait or do males do it, too? We oohed and aahed at each dish, but I could've used a bit of salt on a couple of them. The mushroom and pumpkin mole was especially delicious and the Three Sisters Veggie bowl was the most colorful. The fry bread was very good and great for sopping up a lot of the sauces. My dish was the salmon tostada. It was really good, but the sweet potato definitely took front stage and the salmon had a very minor role in the dish; in fact, there was so little salmon that it wouldn't have mattered much if it wasn't included. We all shared the blue corn mush that they listed as part of their "sweets". Truthfully, I would've been happier having it at breakfast than as a dessert; it just gave me a craving for something that was more of a dessert in my mind. In fact, one person immediately went and got some beignets at another shop when we were done at Wahpepah's Kitchen. The venue was very clean and beautiful with the mural and painted columns. Lots of things to keep your eyes occupied while there. I believe they had regular chairs at tables, too, but we sat at a table with benches on either side. The table was a bit wobbly, so we kept sloshing our water and drinks when someone would accidentally hit the table. Everything was good enough that I definitely wouldn't balk at returning. Very unique and definitely worth a try.

How busy is it at noon on a Saturday? I do not want to put a credit card down for a reservation and wondering if walking in is doable without a long wait.

I would imagine it depends on how many in your group. When I was there last month, you could've gotten a table if you just walked in with a small party. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Is the restaurant wheelchair accessible? Are the tables outside accessible for a wheelchair?

Yes, the restaurant is wheel chair accessible inside and out.

Do they have parking, s as bd delivery/curbside pickup?

no delivery or takeout but they do catering

Hi. Any dishes good for those with a vegan diet?

They have several vegan options, which are marked with a "V" on their menu on their website.

I understood Wahpepah's Kitchen would be specializing in Native American cuisine. This site indicates, "Salad, New Mexican Cuisine, Game Meat." Please clarify. Thank you.?

Check their site at https://wahpepahskitchen.com/. Proprietor (Crystal) is Native, and part of the restaurant's mission is to support and educate about Native issues and practices, including of course about food.

The other day, I ordered Ground Beef Marinara Zoodle thru the Seamless app. The meal arrived promptly and still hot. However, the soft fiber food container was damp and was leaking a little. But the food looked good, as you can see in my photos. Good amount of beef on top of Zucchini spaghetti. How did it taste? The sauce tastes good. I miss the creamy texture of real spaghetti. Also, the sauce is watery. To be gluten free, I think you can still add more cheese and thicker tomato sauce. Maybe the problem is the veggie noodles don't soak up the extra liquid, and you end up with a pool of watery sauce. It definitely stands out from the run-of-the-mill brunch benedict. Vegetable Hash (roasted sweet potatoes, garnet yams, sunchokes, cauliflower, cremini mushrooms, celery root & onion, savoy spinach & poached eggs): This was also delicious and also set itself apart from the standard brunch hash. I'm glad we ended up choosing these dishes even though neither were my original top choices (I decided on the menu with my friend). It made me feel like you can choose anything and it'd be a banger. We were quite full from these dishes, and we forget we also ordered beignets to come out last. They were fluffy and mostly air (but not in a bad way). The service throughout the meal was good. We were checked on from time-to-time and our waters were refilled, although I wish the water glasses were a little bigger. One small thing to note was that we were given the check while we were still eating, even though the restaurant was still seating people despite it being close to closing time. Unsure if/why we were rushed like this. Overall, this was a memorable brunch spots I've been to in the Bay (dare I say one of the best?). We left smelling like a campfire. I would recommend it.

Fortunately, a waitress was bringing something over to a table buddy of mine and I was able to place my order with her. However, I ordered 2 drinks. One was supposed to come immediately after ordering and the other with my food. The waitress said she was going to try to plan the one with my food so it came out together. She forgot about my 1st drink until reminded almost 20 mins later. I ordered my food which was $17.50 sliders with a substitute of fries $2.. and add bacon $2. When my food came, it came with some sort of greens (Arugula salad..I think) and a side of fries. I don't understand why I got salad because I substituted it for fries. My fries came out first, which made no sense because I ordered my food together. However, upon tasting the fries.. they were cold in some parts..smh. I sent them back for hot fries. The sliders seemed overcooked because they were dry. I'm used to sliders being juicy and soft. My sliders were hard...smh. I did not bother to send them back because I was with many people and I really did not feel like going through the motions tonight..as I normally would have of my food order is just wrong. When the bill came, I noticed that they charged me $9 for a large fries. If it was only +2 to substitute... why did I get charge that? I went on and paid it without complaints. There were at least 4 ppl who ordered food before me and they still did not get their food and it was like an hour passing. I had 2 glasses of wine (Malbec & Blanc). Both were good. I loved the fact that they had karaoke. However, I disliked the fact that people who had gone once still went a 2nd time although there were plenty of people who still had not gone a 1st time. I think this place is chill. They need to do better with accomodating larger parties in both a timely manner and effectively ensuring food is correct, hot and cooked to perfection. I think they probably do best with a table of 4 or 5 ppl. Lastly, it was super hot in here. Yes there are ceiling fans. However, it seems that they have no central air whatsoever. That's ridiculous. Oh BTW.. no waiter ever came back to our table to ask if we wanted to order anything more. They also did not come over to ask if the food was good either. Our finshed plates say in front of us from the time we got it until almost 11pm. I would say that my table received food by 8:30ish.

However last Thur we came for dinner and brought some friends who were excited to try this place for the first time. Beet salad: 5/5 Ribs: 5/5, coleslaw: 1/5 why is the coleslaw not good? It's very soggy and wet and taste old, not crisp and refreshing as it should be... Pls improve the recipe for this... Our to-go order was close to $40, for some ribs and coleslaw, coleslaw did not eat Chicken Sando: 4.5/5 Pork Roti: 3/5 good flavor but pork was chewy and fatty Corn fritters: 4.5/5 Trips Triple: Tri-tip was good 5/5, but not a fan of the chicken 1/5, pork shoulder ok 2/5 would only order the tri-tip again from this combo Service was fine and ambiance cool

Yes!! Try this place and hear's why. Tucked into a small strip in Alameda, this spot is a gem. The…read morespace is beautiful--clean, stylish, and surprisingly calming. Service was quiet but attentive, which made the whole experience feel effortless. The food was the real star. We started with the Brussels sprouts (light, crispy, and perfectly cooked), calamari (well‑seasoned and not heavy at all), and warm biscuits with whipped honey butter--so good. The clam chowder stole the show for us: poured tableside, rich but not heavy, and full of flavor. For entrées, the seafood pasta was fantastic, the lobster rigatoni was delicious (just wished for a bit more lobster), the ribeye was cooked perfectly, and the lamb--while tasty--could've used a touch more time. Overall, this place is an easy 5 stars. Beautiful atmosphere, great service, and memorable food. I'll definitely be back to try the dishes we couldn't get to.

A friend of mine told us about this place so we needed a new place to go so here we are. I made…read morereservations since there was originally going to be 7 of us. I was surprised that I didn't have to hold the reservations with a credit card which was nice. We arrived a few minutes early and waited just a few minutes before our table was ready. As soon as we sat down the hostess asked if we needed any waters. Our waiter Jacob also came around right away to see if we wanted to order any drinks, we ordered the old fashioned, the Mai tai special, and margarita. Drinks came back pretty quick which was good. All the drinks tasted pretty good. For starters we ordered the calamari for the table, fruit salad, clam chowder, and a wedge salad. The calamari came out first, it was cooked perfect, had good flavor to it, the Brussel sprouts mixed with it was tasty, and the lemon sauce that came with it was refreshing. The clam chowder was excellent but it was more like a cup than a bowl. The wedge salad was okay, I've never had eggs in my wedge before, and it could use some better bacon bits or whatever it was for the bits of meat. The fruit salad was great. For our entrees we ordered the Ribeye, the Lamb chops, the Pork chop, the New York or Sirloin, and the Duck Breast. The good thing is that all of the entrees came with sides versus a la cart. The entrees came out after a while which wasn't too bad. It seemed like they only had one waiter taking orders for all the tables. Ribeye, Lamb Chops, Pork Chop Sirloin, and the Duck Breast were cooked perfect, med rare, and great flavor on all the meats. The ribeye was a little tough which was weird since it was cooked perfect., so I don't why that was. All the sides (cream spinach, mashed potatoes, corn, brussel sprouts) were very good. For dessert we shared the Strawberry Shortcake and the Churros. Two great desserts, fluffy bread, tasty strawberries, the sauce was perfect, the churros came out hot, nice crunch to them, and the flavor was great. Overall, a great place to have dinner. The restaurant has plenty of seating. We go all around the bay area and I believe prices are pretty high for drinks, soups, salads, and desserts. We didn't have any Italian food but looking at the menu, they could be just a tad high as well. Our waiter Jacob did a great job.

Review is for the London Bus Burger, Louie Louie (soft-shelled crab) and onion rings! The Bureau 510 gets their burgers right: lightly seasoned, not overly handled so you can feel the wonderful texture along with some major juiciness. Also a big plus is their meat-to-bun ratio so you get a nice bite of burger with the sturdy yet soft bun. The Louie Louie looked amazing. My 2 friends ordered that and devoured. It was lightly battered, not greasy and a nice size. Onion rings were house-made and equally light with a beer batter. Delicious! Staff very welcoming, friendly and checked on us a couple of times. Menu has plenty of options to choose from. The Bureau 510 did a great job (has me craving more!) this visit so will definitely return to try items like the fish and chips, clam chowder and Chef Specials. I was in the area looking to grab a bite before heading to Southie to catch the Hawks manhandle the Niners. As usual, the restaurant that I always look to forward to visiting is Hummus Republic. Once I found some parking around the corner, I was happily skipping down the block towards the entrance, until... The place was dark, and no one was inside. I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't one of the scheduled closed days. Sure enough, it was not. There was also no signage on the window or any mention of a vacation or emergency. It was just... closed. As I looked inside, I noticed some furniture and decor had already been removed, so I knew it was beyond the point of no return. In any event, it is indeed a dark time for me, as I frequented Hummus Republic quite often. Yes, I know it is a chain, but the nearest one that I know of now is all the way in Livermore near the outlets. Honestly, it's not completely a shock though, as this particular location was often empty, and I also heard that rent is quite high. There are also alternative Mediterranean shops in the vicinity, such as Tahina and Q's, but none of them combine the level of freshness, convenience and overall value as Hummus Republic. Although it's a lazy comparison used a zillion times before, just think of Hummus Republic as the Chipotle of Mediterranean fare. Depending on who you get serving you, portions can range from large to absolutely gargantuan. It's no exaggeration when I say that a single bowl serving is pretty much enough for both lunch and dinner. Coming from a pig like yours truly, that is saying a lot! Sadly, this exact address also seems to have a high turnover rate, as I have seen a myriad of various businesses sprout up there in recent years. Hopefully the next tenant will provide something to fill the inevitable void. RIP Hummus Republic! You will be sorely missed! The only thing that improved my mood after witnessing this sad news was watching the Hawks absolutely mollywhop the Niners. :‑D
