I only got to try their limited menu at their booth for the inaugural Oakland Freedom Run and it was phenomenal! Loved that they even had vegan options too. Staff was great and so quick with their food prep. It was a limited menu so I can't wait to try their brick and mortar locations in Oakland and Berkeley soon!

Cozy little space with a side eating space but limited seating. A few two top tables outside too as well as a few tables in the main room. Order at the front and then find a seat! All the utensils are in the front room and with a dirty dish bin in the bottom~ They really know their chicken- it was moist and had so much flavor. I really enjoyed the fried chicken sando sauce, it was so tasty! - also tried the yuzu jerk sauce- tasty but also reminded me a little tiny bit of curry sauce heh Service is friendly~ I will be back to try the other flavors!

walked in on a tuesday a little before lunch rush hour and ordered at counter! cutlery and napkins available on the side. don't be fooled, there's additional seating on the side of the restaurant. food: crunchy cucumber refreshing, saltier as you get to where the bulk of seasoning is placed. use the cucumber to reset ur tastebuds in between bites of different chicken. orange honey aioli: the chicken itself was moist seasoned plainly. chicken has yellow mild sweet sauce. the miso ranch served on the side is deceptive in the best way, looks heavy but tastes light with slight tang. garlic miso: dry rub was a bit disappointing. i expected it to be coated with the powder but it was more of a light dusting so it was a bit plainer compared to the other chicken. i def plan on going again to try their different sauces on their menu

This place is awesome!! A little hole in the wall bursting with character inside. I mean you've got funky swag and lots of legit Japanese products and a wide selection of sake and other drinks. of course I'm sure their main speciality is the fried chicken so you gotta try that. It was crisp, hot, and perfectly seasoned. They have so many sauce choices too! I wish I could try it all. Service is quick in spite of the single lane line up. They use a speaker/intercom to call you up, which makes it easy to hear when your order is ready for pick up. I'd love to visit again if I'm in the Oakland area. Since it's in the city, parking is mostly street though there may be some nearby paid lots within walking distance.

No wonder it's an Oakland staple, this place shmacks! It's a little easy to pass in downtown, but once you're inside, it's like nowhere else you've been. Japanese fried chicken is already hard to come by, and this place specializes in it! Before you even get to order that classic 4-piece plate, you're greeted with a bunch of fun snacks, international beers, and other bits and bobs. I've tried two flavors out of the 14 rubs and sauces they have. The Kogarashi honey is delish -- if you reaaalllyyyy enjoy wasabi heat. Garlic soy is classic and always a good and safe choice. I'm definitely going back again so I can try all the other flavors. The chicken itself is juicy and tender, I cant imagine any spice or glaze ruining it at its core. (I stomached the wasabi despite my mistakenly ordering it because I just wanted Aburaya that bad)

Found this small Japanese restaurant while looking for some places to eat before seeing a show at the Fox Theatre. The sauces here are quite extensive and I definitely would like to come back and try other ones. I had the teriyaki sauce on my fried chicken and my partner did the BBQ and Umami salt which was certainly plentiful and a great meal with salad and rice included. It was well worth the price and I would certainly get it again. Overall I will definitely come back again to try more sauces and dry rubs!

Our lunch at Aburaya was so filling and satisfying! Each of us ordered their 4 pieces chicken with rice and salad. We were so hungry but thought the 4 piece portion was a bit much. We couldn't finish our lunch and brought it home with us as the portion was quite large. For the chicken flavor, We got their habanero miso, Karashi honey and garlic miso. All flavors were very tasty and the chicken was so juicy in the inside. We also got their tater tots and cucumber salad. The tater tots came with some delicious toppings and sauce. The cucumber salad tasted so light and refreshing. They also serve some interesting alcoholic drinks (beer and sake) local and from Japan. There are plenty of seatings area inside as people come and go. Will return to try other items and flavors.

Two fried chicken with BBQ sauce, rice, salad, cabbage

Looks like almost the entire audience of the Taylor Tomlinson comedy show at the Paramount and I had the same idea to come here for a pre-show dinner. I enjoy trying different restaurants in the area anytime I come up for a show at the Fox and Paramount but none have been this busy, which is a testament to their popularity! The online menu is pretty overwhelming in its options but at the register it was more clear: pick a protein (chicken or vegan), pick a dry rub OR sauce , pick a base (rice/salad/cabbage/combo). And then with options to order appetizers or dessert or non-fried protein entrees (but then why are you here?) Overwhelmed with the 10+ sauce or dry rub options I played it safe and went with Japanese BBQ sauce. It was a little too sweet for my tastes so I wish I had tried one of the more out there options. The chicken was flavorful and while not super moist, it wasn't dry. I got two pieces on top of the rice+salad+cabbage combo and this was like $11 and more than enough food for me. Wild! The salad came with a lovely sesame dressing but the cabbage was raw and roughly chopped, so a little hard to eat. The chicken also came with a ranch that I keep thinking about because it was unique. Not like traditional American ranch, a little closer to a Greek taziki because of some herb in there. Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating but it fills up fast beware, and you need to wait in line to order before grabbing a spot - limited street parking nearby - almost everything is gluten free (especially the batter) except for some of the desserts

The Fried chicken burrito from Aburaya is absolutely delicious. The size of the burrito is big and has avocado, tomato, onion, slaw, rice and greens with it. The real standout is the Spicy Rock'n'Roll BBQ fried chicken. The bold, spicy flavor pairs perfectly with the savory roasted seaweed, creating a rich and satisfying taste combination.

I received this recommendation from a friend, and the restaurant vibe is quite unique and odd. In their main room is part of the kitchen, a few tables, the ordering counter, and a display of merchandise. The room next to it has more seating available for around a few dozen people. I ordered a mushroom side dish along with one of their chicken specialty dishes, which was their Fried Chicken with dry Garlic Miso seasoning. While the chicken was flavorful, I felt like there was a unique seasoning factor that I was looking for for a place that is known for their chicken. I did enjoy the mushroom side dish a bit more. I'd love to try their other dishes in the future in the heart of downtown Oakland!

I got dinner here with a friend here last Tuesday. No reservations were needed but we got here a little after they opened at 5:30pm. The 8 piece fried chicken was more than enough for the both of us. I loved that it was boneless and pretty light on the batter but crispy, nevertheless. It didn't come with rice but I suggest getting it as a side that goes with the chicken pretty well. It's a nice place to grab a bite to eat before heading to a show at Fox Theater which is very close.

This is a great casual spot for some good Japanese fried chicken. I got the oyako-don and it was loaded with savory egg and crispy fried chicken. for $15 this is an amazing deal, as the amount of protein I'm getting is a lot. The salad and red pickles provided an interesting contrast to the flavor which was a huge plus. The rice was well cooked and had a lovely aroma. Service was self-serve but it did not take too much time for them to prep. I would definitely come back here often.

I love this spot they are the best great service amazing food. I recently found out that I have a gluten allergy and majority of their menu is gluten friendly, basically being the only spot I go to for gluten free chicken! Solid proportions definitely a new regular here. :)

The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!

I tried the Kamo Nanban and a beef/pork cutlet. The Kamo Nanban was delicious. The noodles were cooked to perfection - neither overcooked nor undercooked. The duck melted in your mouth with every bite. I usually find duck to be more tough, but this was so much more tender. There was also a perfect portion for duck to noodles, so there was enough for each bite and to finish the meal. The beef/pork cutlet was really good too. There are so many options that I'd definitely come back to try something different next time. If you're vegan, this is actually a great spot. My partner ordered the spicy vegan ramen and thought it was terrific, though we both agreed the broth wasn't as rich as we're used to. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen, but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The broth felt a bit underwhelming, and the pork flavor came across stronger than I expected. That said, I'd definitely come back, especially because of the thoughtful vegan options. Next time, I'll probably try the Chashu Bowl, which looked really good when it came out at another table. The space isn't very big, so it's probably not ideal for groups larger than 4-6, but it would be great for a casual date night or cozy lunch.

My friend and I happened to walk in right at 5 p.m., landing perfectly at Happy Hour (truly, divine timing). But honestly, it's probably the best time to come. We were seated quickly, and so begins our alcoholic adventure. I can't speak much to the fish, but everything we ordered was a hit. First: get the lychee beer. I'm not even big on alcohol, but I somehow ended up three or four rounds in... heh. Anyways, the yakitori (we got pork belly and chicken thigh) were juicy and packed with flavor, and the karaage was crispy, tender, and perfect with the sauce. We actually ordered multiple rounds of everything and left feeling very full and very festive. Overall, Public Izakaya is a gem tucked behind an unassuming storefront. The ambiance, the food, and yes, the beer, makes it an easy go-to whenever I'm back in the city. Consider me a convert!

Came into town last night to catch a show at the Masonic Auditorium & we were looking for a bite to…read moreeat & some drinks before the show. Since there isn't much to do around the immediate top of Nob Hill, we came back down to explore the neighborhood around Union Square & found Public Izakaya as our dinner spot. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you enter the doors, you enter a world that is classically Tokyo/Shinjuku. Decor is everywhere, on the walls, the ceiling, with toys, figurines, art, plants, anime, lanterns, books, and other sort of interesting, authentically Japanese trinkets. The interior space is very appealing and everywhere you look, you'll see something that catches your eye & imagination. They put a lot of work into decorating this space! It's big & small at the same time. Tables are a plenty, but space is tight. It's really hard to get around in here, you'll have to squeeze between people, tables, chairs, and just walking to the bathroom or your table, you'll have to zig-zag and squeeze past many obstacles. But, it's worth it, and classically Japanese Izakaya, and judging from the packed restaurant on a Friday night, everyone came here to socialize, eat, drink, and hangout & have fun. Music was also very pop-py Japanese, so it really set the right mood for an energetic & fun experience. The service was great. Lots of wait staff roaming around the restaurant ready to take orders & answer questions. Prices are fairly affordable, and offers you a chance to try many small dishes, or splurge on larger entrees. Since we were going to a concert that would go well into the night, we wanted to keep or food intake light, and alcohol intake heavy! The cocktails are good, diverse, creative, authentic, and tasty, but rather small for $15. There is no bartender, the drinks come out to you from the kitchen, but service was fast & efficient. We tried a Lemon Sour, Lychee Mojito, and Ume Shiso. Each were well crafted & presented, but pretty tiny and with very little alcohol, but lots of flavor. We ordered the Mushroom Hot plate, Agadashi Tofu, and salt & pepper broccoli. Food was tasty, portions small, and everything was pretty salty & oily. It's an Izakaya, so I did expect small plates to share in between sips of drinks, but I think the food kind of missed the mark. I ended up feeling a little sick from the salt & oil in the food, but the alcohol kept me going. I think we will come back to try some fresher seafood & Sushi next time, and skip the heavy fried appetizers. Might also stick to wine, beer, or sake, as the cocktails were pretty pricey & small & weak in alcohol. But, it's a really fun, upbeat spot. Lots of eye candy to look at as you are hanging out, eating, drinking, and having fun. The decor & atmosphere is so fun, creative, detailed, and pop-culture Japanese. I really felt like I was transported to an Izakaya in Tokyo for the hour that we were there. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and I'd like to go back to explore the menu as well as artwork & displays around the restaurant. We had 3 drinks and 3 appetizers, and our bill was around $100. We left satisfied with our Japanese Izakaya experience here, only disappointed by the size & weakness of the alcoholic cocktails, the saltiness & greasiness of the fried foods, and I even felt a little bit fat trying to squeeze into the aisles & tables of the restaurant as a 6' 150" thin asian man, lol. Oh well, I guess Tokyo is dense and Japanese spaces are supposed to be small, tight, and narrow. That mostly added to the authentic Japanese Izakaya experience. PS, it's pretty loud & crowded & busy here, so don't expect to have a calm, quiet, and peaceful conversation here, you'll have to shout above the music, chatter, and noise of the urban jungle here, which actually adds to the classic Izakaya experience. It was a lot of fun, but not a lot alcohol. 3 cocktails and I didn't even catch a buzz!

The amuse bouche was this super fun crystal bread with sesame paste - very unique. The courses consisted of a variety of Japanese food, including a mozuku salad, mini chirashi bowls and box sushi. I do not like bamboo, but it's so good here. This l is the first spot where I didn't eat it out of obligation, but joy. The yuzu foam palate cleanser was also so fun! The sushi selection was extremely unique and consisted of many fish I've never heard of like knife fish. The server was really nice in explaining what's unique about each fish and the preparation it takes. Using knifefish as the example, it's a fish that eats a lot of clams so it has a bit of a clam taste and can be more difficult to cut. What most impressed me is how well the price was pressed so that it didn't fall apart when I picked up the nigiri. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy with memorabilia from the chefs life and past patrons (Pixar art!). The price is an absolute steal for the quality of food you get. Restroom is next door in the swan depot :) The chef told us that the sister location is more sushi focused so I look forward to that next time :)

How did I never know this gem existed? How have I only eaten here once?…read more Everything was exquisite. I simply encourage you to go. The delight is always in the details and they have the details mastered: warm towels when you return from the restroom, pour-over saki (in case you want just a few sips more), finger-wipes refreshed with boiling water served from a small tea-pot. The plate ware was exquisite. I wanted to steal it all. The service was attentive. And the food ... it is rare that I eat any dish that truly opens my eyes, and there were two last night, including a fried cod, served cold, that is unlike anything I have ever eaten. (And the fish from Hokkaido was exquisite. I have never had a more succulent bite of scallop. You must go. This is a hidden jewel in the heart of Oakland and is not to be missed.
