This was on my bucket list to hit on the B.I with my siblings. It was such a comfortable, enjoyable, smooth, & relaxing journey. I had Bailey as my horse & she was my first ever horse to ride, she made it very easy going. My siblings and I really loved this experience and Jaime was a perfect guide. He provided a lot of history & knowledge of the aina, it was nice to get someone local to take care of us. It so worth the time & price, considering that we got to go down to a secluded river that falls from Mauna Kea (it was cold but refreshing) in the middle of the tour. I really wanted to go horseback riding in Hawaii. It was one of the items I had to cross off my list. After doing a lot of research I found Wailea Horseback Adventures and decided to give it a go. It sounded great with the horseback to the waterfall. The place wasn't terribly difficult to find. Apple Maps took us right there. They had nice bathrooms if you needed to change or anything. They are co-located with the zip lining activities if you want to do both while you're there. What sounded great to me was riding to the waterfalls. The horse riding seemed incredibly minimal. Very short right to the falls. Then some treacherous stairs down to the falls. You get 45 minutes to swim, sit, do whatever at the waterfall. Then you ride a very short ride back. They nonstop and take photos for everyone which I thought was a nice touch. I felt like too much time was wasted on talking about how to ride horses and use neck reigns than actual riding. Then obviously the waterfall time. I would've liked to do more riding and see more. read more

I took the morning horseback and waterfall tour. It was great! My horse, Danny, was very well-behaved. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly - I loved that it was led by two women! The property is vast and beautiful. We were escorted by two adorable farm dogs, and rode through a heard of cows. The waterfull swimming hole was refreshing on a hot day (I recommend bringing water shoes as the rocks are very slippery). All-around a lovely experience. My one suggestion for improvement would be to offer a tour for more experienced riders, with a more interesting route and some trotting. The existing ride is pretty basic. read more

Our family had a wonderful experience at WHA with Julie and Mila as our wrangler-guides. The views were breathtaking and the horses were gentle and obedient. Highly recommend!!! We chose the morning ride for a "cooler" experience but it was already warm by 9. Glad I had my wide brim hat. (They provide helmets which are optional for adults, small and large saddle bags for stuff. No backpacks but I had my Fanny pack for easy access to my phone for quick pix) our group of 5 were given basic instructions on how to sit on the saddle, guide your horse, etc. Soon we were off ... the horses naturally moved to a single line as we moved to our destination. As we climbed higher we had the view of the ocean and our guides have bits of history of the land and surroundings. We stopped for a quick photo and then took a 45 min break at the Umauma Falls where you can swim, paddle, or relax on the lawn or in the gazebo (bathrooms and changing rooms available.. it was more modern than I expected). It was nice to dismount and get out of the sun. Then we fed our horse a treat and started our ride back. Overall a lovely experience. Julie and Mila were warm and friendly. Our girls loved the trail ride and the break they took at the waterfall. The guide was very personable and attentive and all the horses seemed to have nice dispositions. We've done trail rides on each of the islands, at multiple stables, and Wailea Horseback Adventures by far has the nicest set up for guests. There are multiple adventure/activity companies at the location, so along with a snack shop, they have multiple comfortable, shaded seating areas. Loved that! We usually just sit in the car, looking for some shade. Their set up was quite lovely. read more

Our guides were Julie and Jaimie. They fixed us up with horses that matched our weights and experience levels and were very patient with those who had minimal experience. Great experience on this horseback excursion! Location is about 25 minutes north of Hilo, though a bit easy to miss their driveway up to the stables. If you see the Umauma falls adventure sign, you've already passed their driveway. It is a small turnoff with two driveways side by side (and the sign is a bit set back so hard to see easily when you're on the main road), you'll take the driveway on the right. After we passed it the first time, it was easy to figure out on our way back, so not too crazy to find either. Once you check in and sign some waivers, the staff member will give you some saddle bags that you can transfer your belongings to (anything you need for the ride plus waterfall time). The rest is probably best to just lock in your car. It was quite hot out and there wasn't much shade so a few of us went to wait in our cars until they were ready to start. We ended up waiting at least 30 minutes because one party signed up didn't show at all (and they said they'd wait 30 minutes to see if they would show). If you opt to wear a helmet you have to wear it for the whole ride (nobody in our group opted to wear one). Then, they'll give you a brief overview of how to ride their horses and basic commands you can use to guide your horse. Then they'll pick out a horse for you to ride and introduce you to the horse before helping you get up. Even if you haven't ridden before, these horses are super well trained and they'll help you in case the horse decides to graze instead of taking you on the tour :D The horseback ride itself was decently long where the staff members will share some history of the area, point our interesting plants/trees, and you have plenty of time to snap pictures of the great view. The horses are given leeway to walk a bit apart from each other so your horse isn't just sniffing the butt of the horse in front of you, but there is a pecking order so some horses will insist on being in a certain location in the line. Midway through, they stop at a particular spot and take a bunch of pictures for you (by party). Then you go a bit further to where they can tie up the horses and you can walk down to Umauma waterfall. It's a small private waterfall, but they have boards and kayaks for you to take out in the small pond area in front of the waterfall. Do note that it is super rocky there, so you'll likely not want to walk in barefoot. Water was also super chilly (despite it being hot outside). There was also a covered area with picnic tables and a gazebo if you don't want to go into the water. On the way back, they let us guide the horses into a short trot which was super fun but hard to figure out how to stay on the horse without bouncing off (turns out the trick is you need to stand up instead of just sitting haha). I definitely did not know that (or think of that), but it was still a fun experience. All in all, a really great experience here and well worth getting to see some Hawaii sights on horseback instead of via car. Would recommend the experience! read more

Honestly so much fun! The horses are so well trained, and the guides take a lot of time in the beginning to get everyone on their horses and make sure that everyone is comfortable. You have some control over the horses, so it's better than those "butt to butt" horseback tours. But no worries if you're a beginner (like me)! The horses know where they are going and can pretty much cruise without much external action. The views were beautiful! The falls were fun and a good break. The tour takes up just the right amount of time, and is totally worth the price. I would gladly do this tour again. read more

Glad I found this place online. The brochure was not in my hotel. This is a hidden gem among the other stables. In my opinion, it's a nicer view to see the valley from the top than it is to go in it and that's why we chose this stable. Our guide Allie was knowledgeable and helpful, giving a great tour and history lesson. She was even an excellent photographer! I would recommend her as your future tour guide. Views on top were amazing and we even saw an almost extinct bird! Don't forget, if your guide does a great job, tip them. That's definitely what we did! It's not everyday you can go horseback riding in Hawaii, unless you work here! If you can swing it, THIS is what you need to do for an excursion. Don't be apprehensive if you've never ridden a horse; they are perfectly trained and more interested in devouring some vegetation on the walk than being concerned you're on their back. Sometimes you need to exercise control and authority though; let them know who's boss like you would your significant other! Don't you wish your significant other had a bit in their mouth now and then so you could give them a little tug to remind them who has the reins? You know you do! Taking a trek though the forest and then seeing Waipi'o Valley was life changing. It really is the valley of the kings! You need to experience this feeling at least once in your life and you can only do it here! Our guide was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable; a true credit to his heritage and profession! This is now called Wailea Horseback Adventures, and they just moved to their current location next to the ziplining a month ago. Maile and Jamie were wonderful guides full of knowledge of the local flora and fauna, which made for excellent conversation along our ride. This was my boyfriend's first time riding, and the horses were very responsive and well-behaved. The waterfall is a nice secluded spot, but they have bathrooms and changing rooms there to change into a bathing suit. They also have kayaks and standup paddle boards to use. They share this area with the zipline and ATV people, but we pretty much had it to ourselves. On the way back to the stable, we got to sample some cherries and guava growing wild in the area. We brought a small lunch to eat by the waterfall, but I feel like we didn't really need to have lunch on the ride, as we went on the morning ride, and we were done by noon. Time is better spent paddling around the water (cold, but refreshing). The more adventurous ATV people were even cliff diving! Overall a great experience while visiting Hawaii. read more

Wailea Horseback Adventures was a GREAT way to spend an afternoon. Their new location is shared with the zipline company, but they own the air while the horses own the land. Unlike some horseback places, these horses looked really healthy and strong, patient and still with personality. The tour they used to offer was 5 hours, but this was marketed as a 2.5 hour trip; I have to say, 2.5 hours were perfect. The ride to the watering hole was smooth and easy. The restrooms were at the top of the hill, but the changing room was down by the water hole and falls. The water was a cold shock after the heat of the sun and ride, so the life vests was a nice insurance in case muscles cramp up. By the time I swam to the falls, I was warmed up. The paddle boards were super fun to chill and float around on. Maile and Jamie were awesome guides and their horses were wonderful. They knew so much about the plants making the ride even more enjoyable. And Patches, the dog, was so sweet and cute! read more

Go on this tour! The guides are so great at making sure every rider is paired with a horse that will best suit their experience and personalities. You can tell how much they care that both the rider and horse enjoy their day. The tour is a great way to see the land at Umauma as well as learn more about Hawaii with the guides pointing out plants and land features as you go. I have never been horseback riding before, and this was a great time. I was very nervous at first, but after 15mins or so of riding, I felt like a pro. This review is for the regular trip, not the waterfall trip. You will check in at the art gallery. This is because they will transport you to the Ridge Stables up in the hills. There is food and drink available, as well as picnic tables to relax while you are waiting to leave. (Definitely get the Tropical Dreams Icecream while waiting! It's locally made and VERY creamy & tasty!) Recommendation: Please wear jeans/pants. You will rub up against brush, trees, and of course, the horse, so please protect your skin/legs. There were riders on my trip that wore shorts - how the other riders survived, I will never know. Wear sneakers or riding shoes. Do NOT wear flipflops or sandals. You do sign a waiver, stating that you understand your rights as a rider, but the Stables rights as well. Riding helmets are available for any guest - free - for your safety. You are not required to wear one. I wasn't sure if I should, but I opted not to and was fine. You can bring bug spray, but I only sprayed it once and really didn't need it. I did use sunscreen because you are on the horse for almost 2 hours. I wore a hat, and I'm happy I did, except it flew off once and one of the guides got off his horse to get it. My horse's name was Coco...and he loves to eat. If you get him, he will stop every 5 minutes or so to chow down. The horses have a pecking order, so don't be alarmed if your horse takes off (not in a gallop) to be in the front of the line because that's where "he or she belongs" in their social network. They provide you with instruction before getting on the horse. No need to have ridden before. They will ask your riding ability and pair you with the appropriate horse, hence my new found relationship with Coco. Bring a water bottle too. You get a riding sack to store it. Do not bring a bulky purse. If anything, transfer everything to a bookbag so you can wear it on your back while riding. They also offer to lock up your personal belongings at the stable if you prefer. Bring plenty of film or make sure you have enough room on your SD card. You will enjoy really awesome views and sites. You will travel through the woods, up the mountains, and you are given a chance to get off your horse, stretch your legs, relax, eat some macadamia nuts, use the restroom (outhouse), and soak up the awesome view before heading back down. Give yourself a 3 hour window from start to finish. Do not be in any rush because this is an relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely ride with Waipio Ridge Stables again. We set our bucket list for two places to make sure to see and do while island jumping over a 3 day, long, holiday weekend on the Big Island. I'll begin with our 2.5 hour horseback ride. What an awesome way to start the mini-vacay! I highly suggest it and I "ain't" no Horse Whisperer! Choices and Logistics: I had booked our ride about 6 weeks in advance only because, hey, it was a holiday weekend, one has to plan a little more wisely! Any other time weekday or weekend, I would book at least a week in advance just to make sure you get your tour/date you want. We initially wanted to do the 5 hour Hidden Waterfall ride but it only happens once daily at 930am and that's not counting the 30/45 min check in time, basically it just wasn't going to happen when you fly in the same day! No problem, I booked the 2.5 hour Valley Rim Ride (occurs 2x daily). Tour started at 1pm but they ask you arrive more like 12:15pm for check in. Getting there: Touched down in Kona and jumped in our rental jeep to take off for Waipio Ridge Stables in Honokaa. Since it's basically on the opposite side of the island from Kailua-Kona we made sure to allow the suggested Google Maps time of 1 hour 21 minutes but gave ourselves an extra 20 minutes. The check in: Yeah, so when we pulled up we wondered, "Where the heck is the stable?" Oops, forgot that their check in area is attached to the Waipio Valley Artworks store in a tiny little office that sits right the end of the art store. After signing all disclaimers and your life away, it was time for the fun stuff! We brought our own bug spray, sunblock and water for the trek. I felt like we completely lucked out since it was only going to be a total of 5 riders and 1 guide! A Japanese couple with their own translator, my husband, and myself! It felt like we had our own private tour! Stable arrival: From the office location, the guide (Miley) drove us to the stables which is less than 5 minutes away in the company's "Rustic" van. No A/C, no problem! Just keep the van door open! Lol! A short, little, bumpy, yet scenic ride and we landed at the stables. About 15? beautiful horses grazed in the little pasture. Miley got the highs and lows of all riders abilities and matched us up to a good fit...a.k.a. horse. She demonstrated the "driving" techniques, horse handling, and provided special cues and reminders to be aware of. Ride on: A little nervous as we took off, I felt like a pro within a few minutes. It turned into such a nice and relaxing ride once I got to feel my horse...Flash. Immediately, I could tell it was a horse after my own heart. This baby loved to chomp, graze and taste every patch of green weed along the way. Miley looked back and saw that Flash was taking full advantage of my easy going abilities and told me that I needed to instill some discipline in him! The overall trail ride takes you a gradual incline ridge with beautiful lush forest as a backdrop. The horses are basically on auto pilot and maneuver the trail with ease. Also, it hadn't rained that much prior to our ride so the trail wasn't too muddy. Of course, some spots were muddy, but nothing a horse couldn't handle and no one dirty. As you ride along, it's so serene, trees rustling, birds chirping, it almost puts one in a meditative, Zen-like state. Clip-clop, clip-clop. And bam! It opens wide like a movie screen....the waterfall, ocean and ridgeline. We stop and take a zillion pictures while Miley sets us up for the perfect backdrop. We continue a short distance longer, jump off the horses, take pictures, sit, walk around at a little rest stop area for about 15 minutes. That is the turn around spot and we start our descent back down. I can't say enough great things about our guide, Miley. She was super knowledgeable and gracious. After all, she was born and raised on the island. She shared great stories of her childhood, the land, and her passion for horses. She totally made THIS ride! Before we knew it, our time was up and we had arrived back at the stables. Everyone on the tour had a great time as the smiles reflected on our faces. This experience is truly one to do when visiting the Big Island! Yee-haw! My husband came here for our honeymoon. We drove from our resort in Kona. The drive was about 1.5 to 2 hours. The drive was beautiful from Kona so take advantage of the scenic view. Facts: -Our tour person was Ceaser and Tracy (husband and wife) they were very experience so you do not have to worry at all. -Price 2.5 hour was only $90 per person (worth it i promise. Just an absolutely fabulous experience here! It doesn't look like much (and is a little difficult to find), but once you get there everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful! Our horses were wonderful, I just loved Alligator (yes, that's his name, and he's fabulous). My boyfriend rode Lily, and she was gorgeous and well-behaved, if a little food-minded. I can't say enough good things about our guide, Alli. Our tour ended up just being the three of us, and Alli was so enormously knowledgeable about the history of the area, which plants are edible (for both humans and horses), and could answer literally every random question we had. She was kind, funny, and just amazing. I can't recommend her highly enough. I was fortunate enough that Wapi'o Ridge Stables was able to accommodate my gluten sensitivity for lunch. They had a wonderful salad just covered in turkey, bacon, and cheese, with fresh tomatoes and a honey mustard dressing. We had waters in our packs for the 5-hour duration and gorgeous views. The major stops include a view of the entirety of Waipi'o Valley below, and a hidden private waterfall at the lunch stop. Other views can be found in the pictures. We showed up after a 1.5 hour drive from Kailua to a nice art gallery as per instructions. Our guides were very knowledgeable about everything involving past, present and future developments in the valley. We learned about the history of the people, the farming, horses and agriculture, in addition they were adept at pairing horses up with rider experience. I highly recommend the excursion and when we return we will go for the longer waterfall ride instead of the 2.5 hour ride. I wished we had that day! The taro history is what made me even more excited to try Lau Lau (I loved it). The wild hog history was also interesting as well as the change from sugar cane to eucalyptus trees farming. read more

This new location just opened in April and you wouldn't know it! They are so professional and friendly! I used to have horses but hadn't ridden in 29 years. They went thru basics, and safety rules, and then we were off!! Really great, well loved horses, and Lia was a WONDERFUL guide! Full of history, Hawaiian lore, and hysterical stories of her growing up! We got a nice run in and then left the horses to trek down to Umauma Falls and grab a bite and a swim! Really nicely shelter built up, and paddle boards available. So beautiful! I was visiting the island for work and booked a horseback ride with Jamie. He was friendly, knowledgeable about our surroundings, and he spend time to teach me riding tips as this was my first time riding. I felt very comfortable with the horse he chose for me. Even though the other riders on the same time reservation cancelled, Jamie still honored my reservation even though I was a solo person. I really appreciated that. Other tour companies have cancelled me for the same scenario in the past. This drive up there was about 1.5 hours from the wikoaloa village hotel area on the Kona coast. Leave plenty of time for construction. Bring cash to tip the tour guides. Jamie- you made my trip so wonderful. Much appreciated! read more

Miley and Allie are very knowledgeable guides and we had a pleasant experience with them. My wife and I did the longer waterfall ride, and it was great. I really enjoyed swimming up to the waterfall. I was able to climb up on the rocks a bit and relax under the pounding water. The long ride there and back didn't really feel that long or tiresome or anything. The lunch Miley packed from the local shop was fantastic. I rode on Bailey and my wife (having a little more experience) rode Magic. The only drawback I think was that we rode with a family of four and the two kids had never been on horseback before (why the longer ride then??). As the kids had little control of their horses, some additional space was put between my wife and myself by them so we didn't get to ride together the whole time. This is a trail ride through the forest, with quite a few opportunities to look into the valley below. Much of it is single file unfortunately but that's the nature of trail riding. This is a good alternative to some of the more cattle ranch style rides available near Waimea. read more

I loved this adventure! The guides were fabulous. The trail was beautiful. It's a nice 3 hour ride. The guides have lots of great stories and facts about Hawaii. The horses were great. They were well trained. The guides took care to explain to everyone how to guide the horse properly. This ride is great for both first time riders and experienced riders. This ride takes you to a beautiful waterfall where you get about 40-45 minutes to swim, kayak, paddle board in the beautiful natural pool of water below the fall. This is a nose to tail ride. If you want to canter or gallop this is not the one for you. I did the 3 hr tour but it's much less than that because it includes the ride down the valley and back. The trail felt super short. I think it was only about and 1.15minutes on the horse. The guide is lovely and the views are nice but it wasn't as adventurous as I'd like. It's definitely good for novice horse back riders. Got some really nice pictures but I wanted views from atop the valley. Got to try the cacao fruit and mountain apples. Our guide climbed a tree to pick them. Saw pomelo and other fruit trees. Very interesting if you like plants. we also saw wild horses. The taro. A couple waterfalls. They had macadamian nuts and apple bananas as treats for us at the office. If you're healthy I'd say do the full day horse ride with them. I think that'd be funner than the short 3hr tour. We did the 2.5 hr ridge tour today. It was a blast. Very organized from the pickup at local office, and drop off at stables...to the selection and mounting of horses. The guides were great, and the trails were breath-taking, as we saw pristine valley floor of flowers and vegetables, and the amazing waterfall ! Well worth the price, and nearby to many locations on the big island. We traveled about an hour away from Waikoloa, and it was a scenic tour. Enjoy ! read more

A MUST do!! Joe and Roy were great! Such fun and so happy my daughter had the chance to experience the amazing views. My third time and her first and I would highly recommend that you not miss this opportunity. Even if you have never ridden a horse before - no worries. Horses are bomb-proof and safety is stressed. What an amazing adventure for our family of four! Our guides were patient and helpful when instructing our family on the art of riding a horse. We felt comfortable and ready to ride our horses after their helpful hints. The horses were so sweet and obedient. Our two boys absolutely LOVED cannonballing next to the waterfall and we all enjoyed swimming in the refreshing water. Even Mom jumped in for a swim! We enjoyed the breathtaking views of the island and the cultural history lessons taught along the way by our knowledgeable guides. This was a throughly wonderful experience that I'd do again in a heartbeat. Throughout the trip we were given an insider's history of the island. It was beautiful and well organized. The trail was lovely and swimming under the waterfall was truly memorable. The horses were great. They were compliant but with a touch of personality.
