Over COVId-19, my grandmother (a regular of the Wakefield tavern) was diagnosed with cancer. We recently went in and they have been such an inviting company. Everyone has been so sweet and helpful for my grandmother from helping her talk it out to even coving some of our tabs. This has brought so much happiness to my grandmother and my family because we know she has more family in the area even if they aren't related. I cannot thank the owner enough for the kindness of himself or the staff that they have shown towards all of my family. This was my first time coming here. Everything was incredible! Very friendly and fast service. Their menu has so many choices from wraps,salads, pastas to burgers. I ate my entire entree and nibbled on other plates. We even had two appetizers. You can tell fresh ingredients were used for everything. All the dishes were hot and fresh. I highly recommend. Ah, a remedy for the chain sports-bar-itis that seems to afflict the Wake Forest area! Wakefield Tavern has a great local watering hole vibe while still managing to be grown up and -- dare I say it -- even a little classy. Not classy in the annoying, "oh-god-I-have-to-put-on-non-stretchy-pants" way, but definitely in the way that says: "Yes! I am an adult human being who enjoys nice things, and I do not have to eat chicken wings next to a giant novelty statue of Elvis or a wall full of NASCAR paraphernalia if I don't want to". I know what you're thinking, and the answer is yes! You really can have it all! It's the best of both worlds! You CAN watch the game there if you sit at the bar, but if you don't want your senses to be assaulted by whatever sport of choice is getting people all frothed up at the moment, there are tables and booths away from the TV. True, they don't have like 70 different beers on tap, but they do have a pretty great selection, with a lot of local brews on offer. The food is also good, from what I've had. They seem have a pretty wide selection on the menu, but I haven't strayed far from the wings and apps. The honey bourbon wings are really delicious, but the risotto balls, philly cheese egg rolls, and nachos are also good choices. Anyway, maybe I'm just relieved that there's an option besides Buffalo Brothers or Ale House available for grabbing a drink and hanging out after work, but in my opinion Wakefield Tavern is a solid choice and definitely has the potential to become a go-to spot. read more

Hubs and I went to Wakefield Tavern recently on a Saturday evening. We thought there was no way we were going to be able to score a table, but lucky us, we only waited about 15 minutes and we were in! I had heard about WT quite a bit from others in the area, but was pleasantly surprised! Not sure why I thought it wouldn't be as nice. I guess the whole strip mall thing sort of makes me think that it will be a notch below favorable, but it proved me wrong. Not only was the menu diverse, it had a huge variety of options- even healthy, vegetarian options! Hubs got a beer, me- wine, and we started with the risotto balls, which holy crap, could have been a meal in itself. It was made with all kinds of yummy cheese and served with marinara sauce for dipping. I got a greek salad for my meal due to being so full from the app. Hubs got the fish and chips- the fish battered with guiness so he was as pleased as pie! The service was outstanding, atmosphere was pleasant, not all sports bar-esque but a little on the romantic side. We have since been to the bar only to watch a few games and that side is sports-esque appropriate so it is a great place for everyone! read more

We just moved here and thought this was a regular local bar & grill. We came here for a quick date night and the waitress recommended the nachos with shrimp with extra cheese. She said once you have their nachos you will never want nachos anywhere else. I thought "whatever". She was not lying. We LOVED the nachos! We loved them so much that my husband ordered them with wings for the Super Bowl and then I went up at half time to get more (with beef)!!!! We also had the wings which I really enjoyed. Can't say enough about this place. Consistently fantastic and friendly service from the owners and staff, delicious food, excellent beer selection, both on tap and in the bottle. I recently had someone tell me one of the main selling points of my neighborhood is Wakefield Tavern and I'd agree. They're always happy to put any game on the TVs for you, but it's not just a sports bar. Really nice woodwork and atmosphere. They'll also go out of their way to make you feel like a regular whether it's your first time there or your 100th. All of the food is great, but I especially enjoy the burgers (Angus Barn beef), French dip, wings, nachos, salads, ahi tuna . . . the list goes on and on. Highly recommended. read more

Visited twice recently. Both times, food was very good, served hot and arrived quickly. Beer was good and cold, and our glasses were never empty. The service here is very good. All the servers seem to work well together. If one sees that you need something, it's quickly taken care of. Prices are reasonable. Nightly specials. Reading the other reviews, I'm left wondering. Did I just catch this place on a bad night? Nothing worse than fish and chips where the coating is so thick that it's a greasy, pasty gook. Fries were also greasy. My guess is the fryer isn't hot enough. Shrimp and grits was soupy and overpowering with garlic; really weird. Nice amount of shrimp though. Carrot cake was heavy and dry. It was pretty bad. When we mentioned to the waiter that we really didn't like it, the manager came over to apologize because, she said, the carrot cake was old and shouldn't have been served in the first place. This place is our Friday night go-to and it never lets us down. Before you read anything else know this, YOU HAVE TO ORDER THE NACHOS! I know, you're probably thinking, "Nachos are nachos, who cares," but these are the best ever. They're made with fresh ingredients (tomatoes, jalapeno slices), both the chicken and beef are delicious, and the homemade cheese sauce is what dreams are made of. So yummy, I wish I were eating them right now. We've ordered most of the stuff on the menu at one time or another and it has all been yummy. Service is great and consistent. No matter who you get you can guarantee they'll know their stuff and be attentive but not hover. Even if you don't live in the Wakefield area it's worth the trip. read more

Friendly and conversational but very aware that it's a Resturant and people are there to eat.... Now for the food. I gave 3 dishes I was interested in... I'm a huge fan of this Tavern. They have a little bit of everything on the menu, and everything I have tasted is absolutely fantastic! I'm particularly in love with their nachos! They have a great selection of beers on draft, as any decent Tavern should. The waiter was extremely attentive. He grabbed us another round before the first round was out, which is a huge pet peeve if mine if you don't! Also the patio out back is dog friendly and that's always a huge plus for me if I can grab a beer after the dogs go for a walk! read more

I have visited Wakefield Tavern a couple of times and I just noticed that I had never reviewed here. Best thing they have is the Philly cheese steak egg rolls. Yummy! They come with a cheese dipping sauce. Be careful though because they always come out piping hot so don't burn your mouth like I did. I also like the fish and chips. Had lunch with a large party. Chicken Spiedie sandwich was very moist with mushrooms, fries were excellent, skin-on, and served a side of ketchup in a SS cup instead of a bottle. Malt vinegar and Tabasco also provided. Others raved about fish and chips, bangers and mash. They seem to serve typical American pub fare in addition to international selections like the aforementioned and shepherd's pie. Many takes on quesadillas with traditional sandwich fillings which also received raves. Can't speak to baskets or pizzas as no one ordered them. Server commented that all desserts are made in-house. Soup of the day was gumbo and several told me it was excellent. Website shows outdoor seating. Half-wall separates the bar from the dining room, but affords views of the many flat-screen TV's. Beer specials were $3 or $4/pint. Service was attentive, dining room manager and possibly the owner were present and even holding the doors for us. Everyone said they would be back. After a lovely massage in an area we don't frequent often, the hubs and I decided to take the opportunity to get dinner somewhere we hadn't been before. The reviews and initial glance at the menu made us interested in Wakefield Tavern. As we walked in we were told there was a high top in the bar which we were happy to take if it meant immediate seating. Our server was prompt and quite available to our needs yet wasn't overly warm. Our beer and waters came out quickly which was good because the menu was quite large and we both took a bit of time deciding what we wanted. In the end we settled for sharing the French Dip with fries and the White Pie. The food came out quickly and they even split our French Dips into individual plates which was super nice of them. Our French Dip was unfortunately a let down. The beef was extremely dry and only somewhat palatable with the not very flavorful Au jus. We had asked for provolone instead of Swiss cheese but we were given Swiss cheese. I did make the waitress aware but also said that I'd still eat the sandwich. She said she'd talk to the kitchen but never did get back to us. On the other hand we were both really pleased with the White Pie. The cheese and garlic flavors were plentiful and exactly what we were hoping for. Overall, while the French Dip was one of the worst we've had, we really enjoyed the pizza and would come back to try other pizzas. read more

We decided to check this place out one late Sunday night when most places were closed. We were excited reading the great reviews for this place. Wakefield Tavern did not disappoint- we thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Highlights: + Hot wings were pretty good. My partner loves his wings crispy, and these were fried crisp. - Southwestern quesadilla we weren't too thrilled with. The filling was delicious but the actual tortilla was a little dense. We took our leftovers back, and cooked them on a pan with butter till the tortilla was golden brown and crisp, and that made it really amazing. +++ The fried polenta cakes with shrimp and bacon were HEAVENLY. The polenta cakes themselves were incredibly crispy on the outside but moist and fluffy on the inside. The cakes came with plump, fresh shrimp and bacon in a creamy sauce. ++ The chicken pot pie was really good. It was definitely made fresh and was chock-full of yummy potatoes and chicken. We really enjoyed it. ++ The shepherd's pie was also a treat. It was made with lamb, but the lamb had a vey neutral flavour and so didn't overpower the dish. We were a little disappointed that the cheddar on top was gooey and so didn't really differ in texture from the potato. We took our leftovers home and baked it a little longer until the cheese got brown and crisp, and that really made the pie *amazing* +++ We loved our desserts. We absolutely love trying home-made desserts, and Wakefield Tavern did not disappoint. Their NY cheesecake was excellent, and so was the seasonal pumpkin brownie. Went here on Sunday with another couple to watch the Steelers/Eagles game since it wasn't on our TV. In the past we would have sucked it up and went to Ale House, but I really hate their food, so I was excited to try out a new sports bar, or what I thought was a sports bar. Wakefield Tavern really isn't a sports bar, but they did have about 10 TVs, all showing variety of games. The men enjoyed Sierra Nevada Tumblers, and our waiter made sure they were never without a full beer. Our server gets 5 stars easy...he was very attentive, and so were the other waiters/bus boys walking around, who were eager to fill our waters and clear our plates. We started with 20 mild wings and the beef nachos to share for the first half. The nachos were piled high with beef, tomatoes, jalapenos, and gooey nacho cheese. Yum. The wings, in my opinion, were not very good...tiny and dry. During the second half we ordered chicken fingers and fries and chicken speidie quesadillas to split. I did not try the fingers, but everyone said they were good. The quesadillas were awesome. Yummy chicken speide, melted provolone, and green peppers and mushrooms. SO GOOD. They have a whole menu page of quesadillas, and I am def going back to try them all. read more

I'm giving this place five stars because of the great drinks and food. We were with a big party, family reunion. Service guy was okay - seemed new maybe? He was nice, attentive, little odd, LOL...But fine, just the same. I had a couple martinis - and they were spot on. But the food! I had the Philly Quesadillas and they were off the chart. Wish I could duplicate the recipe at home. So, fr*ggin good! Place was packed but they reserved a table for us. Just a great time of family, drinks and food. Wow. Just wow. I took my friends here after helping me move to Wake forest. So glad I found this place! The food was AMAZING. The waiter, Louis (Lewis?), was sweet and personable and so very nice. Ask for him if you go at night, he's a catch. The Food: I had the Patty Melt on marbled rye. Excellent. The burger was not overworked and so it was really tender and juicy. Made to order in house, I got medium rare and it was perfection. Along with the burger, I had their homemade fries. So good! One friend had The Goat burger (goat cheese, arugula, bacon jam) and he loved it. Raved about it. He got the homemade potato chips and shared. Very good. My other friend got the Spiedie chicken quesadilla. Again, excellent. We all shared. The ice tea was really, really good. I'm a tea snob so this is saying a lot. Although my friends live about 10 miles away, they are coming back with their kids and grandkids to enjoy. The nachos are AMAZING. Everything else was just OK. The fries ...they should be kind of ashamed of themselves they we just awful. Pizza has a weird taste to the sauce. Burger was OK. My husband and I just found this place, as we just moved to Bedford. We've been twice now and we LOVE it! The first I got the pasta dish with crab cakes and garlic shrimp. OMG! It was delicious!! I usually don't order alfredo sauces b/c they are so heavy but this was perfect; very lite. I also usually don't eat leftovers like that, but I zapped these later on and it was just as good!!! The second time we went, my husband and I split the nachos with cheese. I saw pictures and wanted to try them. Boy, they did not disappoint!! The pico on top was so damn fresh! From the cheese to the chicken, these are really the best nachos I've ever had! Do yourself a favor and check this place out!! Also, the lemonade drink the owner made for me was 5 stars!! Speaking of the owner, he was working both times we he is the nicest guy! You can tell he cares a lot about his bar and it is soooo clean! Definitely coming back to try wings!! UPDATE: we went back to try their wings and OMG!! They were amazing! My husband likes dry, crunchy wings with teriyaki to dip, while I like that, but can totally eat them wet. Met a few friends here for dinner on a Saturday night. Even though we arrived at 6:00 we still had to wait about 30 minutes for a table for four, because parties who called and made reservations had priority over any available tables (I didn't know a tavern in a strip mall would require reservations, but good to know for next time). That being said, the inside was smaller than what I anticipated... yet very intimate, cozy and inviting. Our server was awesome and the food was very good as well! My husband ordered the chicken pot pie and I had the wings. The pot pie was awesome. The wings were decent, however they were on the small side and not super meaty. As other reviewers said, the honey bourbon sauce was delish! The beer selection was fair... But definitely not up to par with other "taverns" I've visited. read more

I would give a 3.5 stars. It's a great place, friendly staff, great location and the two things I have ordered were good! Not phenomenal not the best burger ever but it was good. The quality of the meat in the burger was good though. But I got 2 slices of bacon, one tomato and a small piece of lettuce. They don't charge extra for the fixing but when I say I want bacon in my burger I want BACON on my burger! The chicken spiedie was ok, I think I need to stay away from sandwiches because I feel there is a lot of bread. The kids like the kids meals they are a bit small though. I will try the philly steak egg rolls next time and the wings, they seem to be popular. We will be back its in our neighborhood and I want to give the place a chance. read more

My pregnant wife ordered a lemonade. When the bill came it turned out they'd served her two cocktails. The first response from the manager and server were "you didn't specify pink lemonade" because apparently lemonade is a special cocktail they had on the side board that was the exact opposite end of where we were sitting. The next round of response from the manager was to comp the two drinks and suggested when I asked what he would do if he was me was to have my wife go home and purge. When I said that wasn't a good enough answer asked if I wanted the waitress fired. Not an apology but indigence. We have been here a few times previously and enjoyed it but my wife had to make herself throw up and and on the phone with the doctor and neither the server or the bartender seemed to want any accountability and their initial feedback was it was her fault she didn't specify the color of lemonade. read more
