The location, energy, and beer here are awesome. The food was very just ok and super overpriced for what you get. As a person who is sensitive to processed meats, gluten, and dairy-I'll admit this isn't the best place to go for dinner. However, I scouted the menu and called ahead to make sure there were some good options since my parents had invited us here to eat with them. The nice woman on the phone assured me the salads were great and gluten free, so I felt confident that I would still be able to come and enjoy a good meal with my family. Everyone got beer/homemade soda to start. When it came time to order food, I asked the waiter how big the salad was, and he assured me it was "dinner sized". To me, this means there are many elements to the salad that would make it more of a "meal" vs a side salad. When it came, I was really surprised and disappointed. Not only was it NOT dinner sized (think side salad sized)but it was also supremely simple. It appeared the only ingredients were one type of lettuce and pickled beets. $14 felt EXTREMELY overpriced for what I got. Laughable. Overall it was still a great time-and we will definitely be back. DELIGHTFUL. Upon walking in we were surrounded by an atmosphere most comforting. Taken upstairs, the lighting and atmosphere excited our senses. We ordered the wurst share plank and the bretzel. The food arrived fast and was beautiful. I'm not the biggest brat fan but these were by far the best I've ever had. They weren't overpowered with spices but were complimented by them and well balanced. Every bite was full of flavor and succulent. As we ate the sounds of laughter and accordion wafted up the stairs added to our enjoyment. The beer, housemade and incredibly delicious, added to the rich flavors of the dish. I'm conflicted as to keeping this place a secret and sharing it with the world. Ultimately, I decided it's too good to be selfish about. The menu was quite intriguing and I would definitely consider coming back here for food. Their outdoor seating was also very nice and allowed for a socially distanced experience on a beautiful fall day. However, the service left me wanting. The waitresses all seemed to be speaking in some sort of theatre sing-song voice that seemed over the top and took away from the entire experience. I only stopped here for a drink, so I will come again and see if it's a better experience. read more

AWESOME repurposing of this space that dates back to the 1850s. Its a tight fit upstairs and down but they have a good amount of tables shoehorned in and a small but adequate bar by the door as you enter. They specialize in German-style beers and go the extra mile to pair that with German food. Came in about 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon and the place was jam packed so we had about a fifteen minute so we got a couple of beers and stood by the door. Ordered the Dunkel first and had the Pilsener with dinner. I know Pilseners are lighter, but I love them so and they make a good one. Also ordered the Wurst Share Plank (three types of wurst, a choice of three sides, with condiments and rolls). Chose the Bratwurst, the Currywurst, and the Red Table Red Dog. Liked the currywurst the best but the other two were tasty. Between the two of us splitting this out we didn't get stuffed, but it was enough. They also offer salad, and other types of entrees (smoked fish plate, herring plate, etc.). The choices are varied enough so there are nice options to pair with the different styles of beers. With the location they have right off the High Bridge, parking will probably always be an issue. You can get some on the street, they have a small number of spaces, and being in the Twin Cities there is always the bike rack that every place in town is seemingly issued when they open. You can also just park on 7th Street and walk the block and a half. Its a great addition to the local brew scene and will be on the shortlist of places to take my German-American inlaws when they are in town. read more

Poor service & poor management planning - multiple times but in this specific 2day incident, we drove from east suburbs based on their FB post for Gluewein. When we arrived were informed that don't serve til 5pm where we arrived at 2:30 then stayed til 4pm but couldn't stay longer...we were told we could buy the mugs and tickets to use anytime, which we decided to buy. That evening FB post changed to state Gluewein would be served 5pm and later on weekends. So next day being a Saturday (and New Year's Eve) we drive again in to get it. We arrived at 5:04pm to be informed they'd sold out...! I don't even really like sausage but I love this place. The combination of history, craft food and beer with real heritage, and cozy charm is undeniable. It's a darn good thing I don't live near West 7th because of how drawn I am to what they have achieved at the Waldmann. It is something new for the Twin Cities, another level of authenticity and hospitality that is a breath of fresh air. And if I were nearby, I would be here all the time. Having lived in Germany briefly as a teenager, I was so excited to see a currywurst on the menu! My boyfriend and I each opted for a "wurst plate" which includes a choice of "wurst", 2 sides, a hard roll and the Waldmann accompaniments - curry ketchup and 2 house-made mustards. I got the currywurst with schnitzel and braised cabbage and was SO impressed. First of all, the cabbage was amazing. Definitely the star of the show. Slow braised with apples, it had a subtle sweetness and was so creamy! Next, the curry ketchup and mustards - amazing flavor, unique, and truly complimentary to the home-made sausages and sides. Finally, the schnitzel - light and airy, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper - the perfect balance to the heavier sausage and richness of the cabbage. I can't wait to go back and try more! And to get an extra side of cabbage!! As for the beer, I had the lager and the ale. Both light, exceedingly drinkable, and pair well with anything on the menu. I would definitely get each of these again. They also have several darker options if you prefer something sturdier, including an alt if memory serves. My wife and my first visit today. What a sweet little spot! Very nice patio, and the weather was great. Servers were helpful and prompt. Customers were considerate and put their masks on when moving around the restaurant. A little pricey. We both got a wurst platter, with a sausage, two sides and pretzel brötchen. A beer each, our bill was $50. Their beer was pretty great. We both got a half liter of their Pilsner, which was much more flavorful than your typical Pils. I ordered their currywurst, which I've never tried but always hear folks talk about. I wasn't impressed. It was tasty, but not very curry-y or bratwursty. The sauerkraut was basically crunchy, lightly pickled cabbage. Not at all what I was expecting. I also got the duck fat potatoes, which were fairly bland. I had a taste of my wife's Mac & cheese, and it was fine - a nice cheesy bechemel, but not too cheesy. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with four stars. I won't diss a place based on one visit, unless they're obviously horrible. For being just a Wursthaus, they have a lot of choices on the menu, and I'd like to go back and try a few more. read more

It's hard to come by a place that is equally both delicious and pleasantly cozy. It really does feel like the kind of place Mark Twain would come hangout and write at over a beer. The three sausages and three sides was perfect for two. They ketchup mustard was perfectly bitter in the best German way you can ask for. While I don't have a picture of the bread pudding, it's room for at the end. It's a pretzel turned desert that will having you craving to come back. read more

We arrived around 3 and ordered our first drinks at the bar when you walk in then we went upstairs and took the large moose room upstairs. From there we had a very attentive waitress that brought us pretzels and more beer. Loved that the pretzels came with some cheese curds but as much as I wanted to I hated the ketchup mixed with mustard blend. It's me I'm sure but I didn't like it. read more

So incredibly historic! This main building is over 150 years old and beautiful inside. The beer selection is great and the Octoberfest is perfect. We ordered the triple wurst board. The curry wurst was excellent along with the smashed duck fat potatoes and beets. The waiter was very friendly and gave us some history. The patio is perfect with huge umbrellas on rustic table. Corn hole bags and giant jenga are on the patio, where our dog was very welcome The inside of restaurant is small as you would expect and beautiful. No details overlooked to keep it era appropriate . One of my new favorite go-to's in St Paul. Really, a 4.5 star rating since they ran out of strudel. However, the overall experience...service, food, history and atmosphere wins all 5 stars. Can't wait to visit in the summer and experience the patio space. And, all approved by a bona-fide German dinner mate too! The beer...really liked the Amber Weizen. Malty and a tiny bit sharp. Loved the Pilsener, and I'm not usually leaning towards them. Sad that they were out of a German style Porter I wanted to try. The food...in a word...fantastic. Start with the Bretzel (pretzel), just do it, you'll thank me. Our Wurst Share Plank included a Frankfurter, Currywurst and Bratwurst. Simply THE BEST I've had, EVER. No exaggeration. The flavors of each wurst were spot on. No greasy sausages here! The sides were equally delicious, Warm Bacon Kraut (you had me at bacon), Duck Fat Roasted Potato (trust me on this crispy tasty little gem) and the Spaetzle (the epitome of German comfort food). Love this place. Visit 1: Came in the summer for a few beers with a group of friends. We sat on the patio and the service was great. Waitress was on point and consistently somehow telepathically knew when we needed another round. We got a few wursts to share and a number of sides. To be frank I am not a huge meat eater so can't comment on the quality of the meat per se...but the sides were fabulous! We were hoping it wouldn't be packed so we could enjoy a beer and read our novels in a corner of the brewery. Sadly...even on a rainy gloomy day this place was packed!! Although I suppose that speaks to how great it is...consistently. Was in the mood for a lighter lunch so got the vegetable soup which frankly sounded very blah...but the flavors were fabulous and exactly what I was hoping for. And the apple pear cobbler. Best. Dessert. On. The. Menu. Finally...the beer. I mean it is a brewery after all. The beers are always rotating and in the summer they had a fabulous light beer to which you could add syrups and essentially 'create your own' flavor. Interesting concept and personally not a beer snob...but intislly didn't sound too appealing to me. I pulled the trigger though and I tried a friends' syrup beer...lol...and surprisingly it was quite good!! Would definitely recommend asking if any of the beers are amenable to adding syrups tho. Truly a different brewery experience. Think back to your elementary school field trip days of touring a historical town and stepping back in time as you enter the old fashioned home. (Anyone? Or was that just a weird thing we did in Wisconsin?) Seriously though, this building is crazy awesome. It's warm, cozy, and smells of smoked meats - the perfect place for a cold winter night. There are a few separated areas, the upstairs, the 'bar', and the front room. We were there for trivia, and because of the way the place is laid out, we felt like we were the only ones there although it was definitely busy! I'm not sure if it was just because of the fact that it was trivia night, but we did actually have a server who came to our table and took beer orders which was awesome - the rooms are kind of small so moving around would have been a task. The beer was awesome, I especially liked the Berliner - I took a leap of faith and added the Grapefruit syrup as recommended by the staff and it was AMAZING. You can also get it hot (?!) which I would love to try next time I visit. The soft pretzel was good, but not worth the $8 in my opinion. I'd like to try some of the other food, though. read more

We came here tonight for dinner and beer. We tried last wednesday but parking is horrible and there is road construction right around it. Tonight we got super lucky and found a spot right in front. When we went in, they had one table left, perfect!! Its an older 2- story home converted into a brew house, it was nice and cozy, especially on a dreary fall day, had a good feel for german food and beer. It was perfect. I had a german wheat beer, I loved it. My husband had a flight of three beers. We shared a wurst share plank, perfect for the two of us. For sides we had duck fat potato, looked like a fried potato cake, spaetzle, and red apple cabbage, delicious. Why just 4 stars? Stumbled upon this place quite by accident while walking St. Paul, and I honestly spent the entire trip hoping to take E back to experience it. Sadly, that didn't work out, but I'm still very glad I at least got to go on my own! Tucked back on a quiet residential street, this place oozes old charm. The atmosphere so comfortable and cute - an old house that was actually the city's first German beer hall way back in the 1800's! There is a fascinating history in the back of the menu that tells you all about it. I was there on a rainy day, so I didn't get to enjoy the beer garden, but the inside was ridiculously cozy. I picked a seat with a good view out the window and ordered the wurst basket with bratwurst and a Dunkel to sip on. The wurst was made in house and very flavorful. It came with two mustards and a curry ketchup, which I rotated among adding to my meal. My favorite turned out to be the sweet brown mustard, but they were all delicious. The roll was good, chewy and moist, not made in house but definitely made locally! The Dunkel was probably the best I've had - malty, a little smoky, and a little spicy. I really wished I had someone to share the "wurst share plank" with - you get three wursts and thee sides to split, and man if the warm bacon kraut, curry wurst, and duck fat potatoes sound absolutely divine! There were several local patrons in that day, as well as a friendly bartender. I truly never wanted to leave, and would have holed up there all day by the fireplace if I could. From the outside, you'd think it was just a regular house, and it appears that it was originally a house, and that adds to its charm. It's a nice cozy setting, feeling more like a den/lounge than an actual restaurant/brewery. I got the pilsner and weiner beers, both good, and then we split a pretzel, also good. Sadly didn't get to try any of the sausage or other German food but they all looked good. I hope to come back some day and try more of their food. I love all things about this place. The eclectic chairs and rustic floors to the lanterns on each of the tables, all add to the rustic feel of this historic building. The atmosphere with the bonus of craft beer and in-house made wurst is good stuff. I've been here twice now and this time got to share this great place with my parents. Both times I shared the wurst plate with my husband. You get a choice of 3 wursts, and 3 sides. We had the currywurst which was one of my favorites on both visits. This time we also had one of their spicy wurst - which was the wurst of the day. It was Minnesota spicy *in other words, not extremely spicy. I enjoyed it nevertheless. We had the spaetzle and warm bacon kraut both times. Last time we had mashed potatoes and this time tried the braised apple cabbage. I love kraut and think next time I'll have to try the spicy cold kraut. The bretzel and the pepper bacon popcorn basket both sound terrific for pre-dinner options. Love the German beers too. This time around had the German porter. Not too heavy and perfectly tasty. Our first time here it was a packed house on a Saturday night. Parking can be a challenge, but worth it, even if you have to walk a couple of blocks. While waiting to be seated it was fun to grab a beer, and be among the atmosphere of the tiny bar area in the main room (next to the hostess station) and the others enjoying a brew and waiting for a table. We sat upstairs and were seated next to the wood-burning stove and it was plenty toasty, adding to the quaintness of this place. Our second time we were on the main level with street-view.
