On 5/17/23, I stayed at The Garden Motel in Walla Walla, Washington. This was my second time visiting Walla Walla, and the first time I spent the night. I tried to stay a couple of years ago, but the smoke from the fires was so bad, that I had to stay in Moses Lake instead. I like older and/or unique properties. I had read rave reviews about this motel, which was built in 1948 and purchased by the current owners, Richard and Carolyn Tuttle as a fixer upper in 1973. Today, their son, John Tuttle, runs day-to-day operations as the motel manager. Their son, Rick Tuttle, handles marketing, and maintenance. I tried to stay here in September 2022, but it was booked. Like all properties built in the 1940s, the rooms are smaller, and best suited for solo travelers and couples. Most other reviewers have comment on how well priced and clean this motel is, as well as how quiet it is, and the helpfulness of the staff. I found all of these to be true during my stay. One thing that's important to me is transparency regarding the actual cost of lodging. I appreciate that The Garden Motel posts the prices online, and encourage you to book with them directly, either online or via phone. For my room with a queen bed, I paid $94. With taxes, it was $104.25. There were no surprises or hidden fees. I stayed in room #5, which I would request again. It is newly remodeled and is a good use of space. My room looked like a small suite. It was exceptionally clean. The bathtub was gleaming! I always travel with ear plugs, because no matter how nice my lodgings, noise is often an issue. I wanted to leave a brand new hotel in the wee hours of the morning to find a store open 24 hours so I could purchase ear plugs. Never again! I got a great night's sleep at The Garden Motel. I later learned this was by design as Richard Tuttle added more space between the connecting walls of each room and additional drywall. The bed was also very comfortable. The water pressure was outstanding! The only property I've visited that has water pressure any better is my father's home, where taking a shower feels like a deep pressure massage performed by an inexperienced practitioner. I liked that the showerhead was high. I'm only 5'6", but many hotels/motels have showerheads set at too low, even for me. One of the things that's unique about this property, and which I haven't found any place else else, is that the guests in each room control whether or not the light outside of their door remains on or not. I arrive late at night and most of the other guests had their light turned off, so I followed suit. I didn't sure that there was no ambient light entering my room via the curtains. I appreciated how much time and attention went into the thoughtful binder full of helpful motel and area information. The next morning, I met Rick Tuttle, who was doing landscape maintenance. He was very friendly and more than happy to answer all of my questions. I walked around the property, taking photos of the beautiful garden area. Rick kindly offered to turn on the water feature for me. I look forward to visiting Walla Walla again. When I do, you can be sure that I will be making reservations at The Garden Motel! What a cool little Motel. Tucked away on the east side of Walla Walla, this motel is a gem. Very small rooms, but being alone I was fine with that. Definitely old school furnishings, and feel to it. The bathroom was incredibly small. I stayed two nights. The only noise you could hear outside was the occasional airplane. Otherwise it was very quiet. The bed, amazing, I melted away in it both nights. It's just one man running the show & he was very nice. I would absolutely come here again. Even just to get away. I really, really hate to write a bad review and my intention is not to harm a small business, but rather to flag the unexpected experience we had and hopefully keep someone else from experiencing the same. I booked the Garden Motel for one night while we were in Walla Walla because the reviews were good and the photos appeared to show a quaint, budget-friendly, but "updated" motel. We've recently started staying at small, privately owned motels from time to time because there is a growing trend of updating these into unique places to stay with a fun sense of community -- thanks to Schitts Creek fame, maybe? Side note: If you're in Pendleton, check out the Pendleton Motolodge. This is a GREAT example of a retro-vibe motel glow up in a great location. The Walla Walla Garden Motel was NOT that. Our room looked NOTHING like the photos posted here -- the tiled bathroom, the white bedding, the sleeping nook -- none of it. It's like they updated one room and posted pictures of it. Long story short, we took one look at the room, turned around and walked out. We had to scramble to find a last minute place to stay that night, and thankfully did. There was no way we were going to stay in that room. We still paid for the room and simply drove back to return the key the next day. The neighborhood is sketchy. The garden area in front of the hotel is quite lovely and well maintained, but it was the only thing that was remotely appealing. On the way to our room we noticed that there was an elderly person literally LIVING in the room next door. Their door was open for air and the room was fully outfitted and lived in. I was torn between feeling devastated for this person and horrified. Upon entering the room, we noticed a horrible musty smell and the room looked and felt dirty. Everything about it -- the furniture, carpet, bathroom, bedding, etc. was old and outdated. I have never arrived at a hotel/motel and refused to stay there. This was a first. I strongly encourage the owners of the Garden Motel to take a hard look at making some moderate investments to this 17-room motel. With some love and attention, and somewhat higher standards, this could be a very special property. read more

What a pleasant and pleasurable stay in this older but clean and quiet motel. On a busy weekend (rodeo)when most places were sold out or charging double the normal rates the wonderful owner still had one room available and at regular prices, under $80. She welcomed me into the office and we had a pleasant conversation about family, the town, and local attractions. She was very nice and welcoming. The room was small but roomy enough for one person. There were the basic amenities, coffee fridge hot water tv with cable. There was a beautiful courtyard for guests to sit in and relax with lots of green grass and plenty of seating. The location was a little outside of town but not far from the highway 1 quick exit back to the main drag and downtown. I visit this town twice a year and will definitely be booking here again. read more

Gets the job done! Conveniently located near downtown. Everything seemed clean when we arrived and it's obvious this place has been given a fresh coat of paint and had some small upgrades. There are three small cons in my opinion. The heat is either up really high, or you have ambient temp. There is no in-between. The bathrooms are tiiiiny. Third, a lot of noise comes in from the parking lot of people talking very loudly late at night or early morning and locking/unlocking (read: beeping) their cars. Would not be my first choice to stay again, but I would recommend it to others visiting. read more

A bargain motel with quality & class. Park outside your room. Small space, the bathroom is especially cramped ‐- but everything is clean & new; quality toiletries; ample, fluffy towels; comfortable mattress with generous bedding; friendly check-in. Best of all, fully 3/4 of this property is really a garden! Freshly mown grass, flowering trees & shade trees, well-tended shrubbery and gorgeous blossoms all around. My rating is based on my expectations and experiences with a 1-2 star motel. This is a clean, practical little inn where we spent a night while traveling through the wine area. I probably would do 3.5 stars if possible. A decent but not great experience, but then, it is a motel. So I think four is reasonable. Pros: - price - friendly service - convenient location - free WiFi - great a/c. I can't handle rooms where I can't crank the air down at night. - shower with good water pressure - lots of towels - tidy -good pillows Cons: -bed is too hard for me. Sore hips. -thin blankets -coffee maker was gross with old water -I wish there were a sheer white curtain behind the front window, so we can let light in without letting everyone see in. Rooms are a bit dark. I will probably look for another hotel on our next visit, but if the prices are too high, I would stay here again. read more

Nothing fancy, but a nice place to be on this side of town. An old style basic motel. I love that the door is a couple of steps away from the car. They have a list of all the great places to eat all over. Mr. Ed's is just up the street. I got to chat with the staff and they are very nice. I called for a reservation and that is how they prefer it to avoid on line fees. Happy to oblige. The best part of the place is hanging out in the gorgeous garden. Nice clean and quite motel. The rooms are very small but comfortable, They are reasonably clean. The grounds and garden are very nice. The staff (I assume owners) are very nice. Very reasonable rates especially contractors rates for a work week. The most important thing is it was quite. The things that keep it from a 5 star rating. The coffee makers are just gross they are not part of the cleaning routine. There is stuff growing in the reservoir tanks this is all the rooms I stayed in. Second thing I was staying there in the summer working long hot days and I would leave the AC on at a very reasonable temperature but when I come back from a 12 hour day working in the heat someone has come in and turned off the AC, What now the room is 95 and the AC has to run all night to cool it down. Note to the owners it is cheaper for you to maintain the temperature than try to cool it down from 95 I know this because this is what I do. If I have more work in your area I will definitely stay again read more

We had a great stay here over memorial day weekend. The owners were fabulous. It was a modest motel between the airport and downtown. The extra money we saved definitely went to purchasing more wine :) You definitely need a car if you're going to fly in here. We ended up walking everywhere (2 miles from the motel to downtown and one mile from the motel to the airport wineries) and were pretty exhausted by the end of each day. Walking distance to Albertsons, great to save money on some simpler meals. We also got some great Mexican food down the street and LOVED the consignment shop next door. Summary: Clean, quiet, plain, inexpensive. The owners are a retired couple, who run this like a mom 'n pop operation. No, it ain't fancy. It looks like a 50's era roadside motel (which it probably was), but they've kept it clean, added wireless internet access and cable TV, and maintain the property in an attractive manner. When we drove up, the owner was working in the garden out front, and it looked beautiful. The room we stayed in was nice and roomy, the beds were comfortable, and the TV got all the stations we needed. The wireless internet was reasonably fast and had fair signal strength. The shower, however, had one of those low-flow shower heads, limiting how much water you get out - I hate those. Two of the plugs in our room were dead, so we had to stretch a cord from the other side of the room to run a laptop computer or charge a phone. Hey, it's not the "W", but for the price, we were very satisfied. The price was great for what we got: a clean, quiet, comfortable room. If we come back to Walla Walla, we'll stay here again. read more

Nice staff, easy check in and out. Low drama for the two day stay. 3 stars because it is an older place, well worn, minimal amenities, felt clean with an aged smell (non-smoking room). Bathroom small, shower warmed up fast, hair dryer, coffee maker, and mini fridge included. TV high on top of a cabinet. The two queens took up the lion's share of the room. Warm wood paneled walls, minimal sockets in which to plug in computers, phones, etc. fancy gear left untouched by cleaning staff who also provided fresh towels and water glasses. Worth the money. Friendly accommodating staff. Clean room, though it had that "smoked in for years and still a little funky despite new paint, carpet, etc" odor. Old a/c and heating system, old shower with wild temp swings, but very comfy bed and recently upgraded bathroom sink. Coffee, fridge, wi-fi all good. Really nice people own this and it shows in the grounds and in the room. I had a room with a single bed, a love seat that reclined, a larger than normal (for the price of the room) bathroom, and a desk to get some work done on. I walked in the door and the owner was extremely rude before I even said anything. Stated he wouldn't rent a room to my elderly friend for the weekend because she had a wheelchair. When I told him she could walk just uses her scooter for long distance he stated he doesn't rent rooms to people who live in Walla Walla because he has been burned to many times from local people. I told him I would vouch for her and he still refused to rent a room. That I should have her stay in my house. All the other hotels were sold out so we had to get a room in Milton Freewater. read more

Rooms are a bit small, but extremely clean..Crisp sheets, soft towels, comfortable beds. Friendly people running the show. This is a budget motel in WA wine country. It is an old building, but it is well maintained, the owners are friendly and very helpful, the rooms are clean, the beds are well-made and crisp, towels are fresh, the rooms have flat screen TV's, a coffee maker, fridge and microwave, and the price is easily the best bang you'll get for your buck in Walla Walla. The showers, while clean and functional, should probably be refurbished, but you really, really can't complain about what you get for your money. read more

It's like stepping back into a more laid back time when motor trips were all the rage. The rooms are perfect. The owner has upgraded them with style and care.
