I absolutely LOVE Wally's. Great service, great atmosphere, AMAZING food, all for a great price.

Not sure I'll be coming back after this experience. I've been going to Wally's for years, back when it was still a small local spot. Through a Palestinian friend who knows the owner, I even met her back when the restaurant was much smaller. I've also been ordering the chicken musahab since it first became a menu item a couple of years ago, and have always liked it. I've recommended this place to friends and family, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I ordered the chicken musahab and after just a couple of bites I couldn't eat it. The chicken was extremely spicy in a way that was completely different from what I've had here before. I usually have no issue with spice, but this was genuinely inedible for me. My lips and stomach were on fire. I brought it back up and explained the issue. I was told that other customers have complained about the same thing before, but management does not issue refunds. There was no replacement, store credit, or any alternative offered. What stood out most is that this seems to be a known issue, yet there's still no effort to make it right when it happens. I ended up paying around $40 total and wasn't even offered the lentil soup that's typically included with orders over $15. I wasn't looking for anything extra -- just some basic acknowledgment that I couldn't eat the meal at all. I rarely send food back, but this was one of those times I had no choice. I left without eating my meal and pretty disappointed. Just sharing in case others have had the same issue or are thinking about ordering the chicken musahab. read more

Best beef shawarma. I don't get the regular one I get the one that has the bread crispy on the stove. The bread is like whole wheat, thin and it allows for a shawarma packed with meat which is my kinda shawarma. The lentil soup was also one of the best I've had in minnesota. Prices are not bad compared to other spots. Aesthetic takes me to a different world. They dont allow you to be at more than a 2 person table during rush times. During ramadan they'll offer each person two dates each to open their fasts with and they also have a prayer space. read more

If you're ever in search of a quick and delicious bite in Dinkytown, Wally's is THE place to go. The prices are comparable with the quick-service chains in the area, and the food is astronomically better. It's a chill vibe if you want to eat inside--it's a self-seating joint so you order at the counter and they give you a number to bring to your table so they know where to drop your food off. Even though it's not a table-service place, all of the staff there are amazing and super helpful; the food recommendation I got from the cashier last time I went genuinely ended up being the best thing I've eaten in my four years eating at Wally's. That aforementioned life-changing meal was the spicy musahab wrap ($9.99)--I'd tried a bite of their spicy chicken before when a friend ordered it, but I'm always a regular chicken shawarma loyalist so I's never ordered it for myself; at the cashier's recommendation, I tried the wrap this time and literally the first bite I took into the wrap alone before I even got to the filling was insane. The homemade wrap itself is SO flavorful, and the lettuce, tomato, and garlic sauce inside perfectly balance the spice of the chicken (and yes, it's satisfyingly ACTUALLY spicy! There's a note on the menu saying, "No returns for too spicy"). It's a great size for the price too, and I genuinely believe it's the best handheld you can get in Dinky (the Dirty Bird sandwich at Banh Appetit is a close second--the area has some GREAT spicy chicken options!). My go-to standard (until now) has always been the chicken shawarma plate ($13.99)--their chicken shawarma is the best I've had and is SO flavorful, and it comes with their addictive garlic sauce and your choice of a side of yellow rice, hummus, fries, or two pitas. Their rice is DELICIOUS but I picked hummus this day for a higher protein option, and it was great. It also comes with a little side salad that's always super fresh and perfectly dressed. Everything I've had here is absolutely PACKED with flavor and people with dietary needs ranging from vegetarian/vegan to gluten- or dairy-free to high-protein can all 100% find something delicious to eat here. The prices are fair and the place itself has plenty of seating--the only downside is of course finding parking in Dinky, but TOTALLY worth it. They're always pretty quick with orders, but if I know I'm ordering to go, I liked to phone my order in ahead of time (mildly cheaper than using their online ordering). read more

First time at Wally's and I am a fan. Customer service was great, with helpful staff that recommend their favorites and etc. I ended up getting a Wally Feast and for sure this thing feed more like 8 people, compare to the 6 people they recommend it for. Yum!! My husband had someone he worked with take him here and he thought I'd like it so we stopped by for dinner before a game. It has a really attractive interior. You order your food at the counter and then they take you to be seated. We ordered the falafel plate with hummus- it was so crispy and delicious. We had the loaded fries which were a big serving but they were delicious also. We also had a chicken shawarma sandwich. They have flavorful meat. I definitely would like to go back and try some different things. We will definitely get more falafel. read more

I really really want to leave a higher review for Wally's but I just can't. I frequent often and the food is always just okay. It seems every time I order the gyro plate or gyro sandwich half of the meat is fried to a crisp or way too crunchy. I love the ambiance of the restaurant and its origin. The best thing on the menu is the hummus and would definitely recommend giving it a try! Service is alright and what you would expect out of dinky. read more

I was by the U to pick up something and really needed to pick up a quick bite to eat. I hopped on Yelp and saw this place had some great reviews so I decided to stop in for takeout. The place is surprisingly pretty big inside, and they have a nice waiting area for other people like me who are ordering takeout. I went up to the front and was helped by some very nice staff. I decided to order the Chicken Shawarma Sandwich. The food was all pretty reasonably priced which is great considering they mostly serve the student population. I sat down for about 10 minutes until my sandwich was ready and then I was on my way. Finally got to take a bite of the shawarma in the car and was super impressed. This was definitely some of the best shawarma in the city. It was filled with chicken, fries, pickles, tahini, and more. The pita was the correct kind for shawarma - nice and thin. Overall, just a super delicious takeout meal. Next time in the neighborhood, this is exactly where I plan to go! read more

Wally's has been a favorite of mine since my college days at U of M! I've always ordered the Chicken Schwirma Salad - it's my go-to take out salad or a comfort food. It's fresh and light - perfect for when you need a quick but satisfying bite to eat. The salad comes with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, feta, chicken & garlic sauce (on the side) covered in a very light vinaigrette. I always order the dill yogurt sauce on the side (or sub for the garlic sauce). It's the perfect light dipping sauce for every bite. The reason for the 4/5 stars is the chicken and the price. The chicken is pretty consistently dry, but since I dip it in the dill sauce I don't always notice it/care about it. The high price for the salad ($15.99) is fine with me since I usually make it two meals - but it's an extra $2 for the dill sauce, which is steep. Overall, this continues to be a comfort place for me, so I'll keep ordering. read more

I really don't love giving 3 star reviews. The staff was nice though! It's close to U of M's campus so a lot of college students seem to hang here. It's a large room with lots of tables to accommodate for larger groups. We ordered a few things for the table: grape leaves, chicken shawerma plate, spicy chicken shawerma plate, falafel. Some of the plates came with fries, hummus, salad, tabbouleh. Most of the food was just...okay. The chicken shawerma was dry. Grape leaves weren't the best. Some fries were bland and some were seasoned. Only the falafel was good. And the salad. Most of us thought the food was just alright. We didn't wait long for the food so that was a plus. And for the price point, the portion sizes were pretty generous. Despite all that we ordered, among 6 of us, we couldn't finish it. Not even halfway! We walked here from the hotel. So I'm not em sure how parking would be. There's parallel parking but not enough with all the construction around. read more

As the name says it, this place serves middle eastern food. Was graving a little gyro sandwich so I stopped by. This place has a pretty big menu with a lot of varieties and combos. The price is good for college campus since most college students are broke. The portion is big as well. I've been here a couple times to fulfill my cravings. Here you order at the counter, they will give you a number and will bring you the food. So it's like 1/2 self serve I guess? As you can see it was a huge sandwich. I only ate half of it. Gyro sandwich: the only complaint I have is, there was A LOT of sauce on it. Like overflowing sauce. But don't worry, underneath is a lot of veggies and meat. I think next time I order this, I will ask for sauce on the side and just pour on as I eat it. Some people maybe like it soaked in sauce so it's personal preference. We here for lunch on a Saturday. This is a fast-food/sit down restaurant. You order first and then that will seat you at a table. That was a bit odd, so we were trying to figure out what we wanted while our children ran around. We ordered the hummus and falafel platter and cheese samosas for appetizers. Note, they said appetizers usually come out with the main meals so I asked that they come out before. I also ordered the chicken kabobs and rice and my husband got the gyro. The hummus platter was pretty big with lots of left overs. The chicken kabobs were served over a huge plate of rice. This was the vote-getter on our brief side stop in Dinkytown for lunch! It totally fits the vibe of the street and the area and I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for some falafel! The portions are generous and the bathrooms (coded entry) are immaculate and kind of weirdly fancy! I had the chicken shawarma and rice plate; the rice was good, the chicken just a little dried out but flavorful. Next time I'd do the sandwich as the garlic sauce was applied for you rather than trying to spread the thick butter-consistency sauce over your chicken on the plate. One daughter had the vegetarian plate and one the hummus and falafel - both loved their lunches. Tap water in small cups is free for the taking; bus your own table. read more

Twelve years ago, when I first visited Wally's, it was a different place. It was smaller, cheaper and better. Today it's fine, but I had to bump it down a star. Three stars is NOT a bad review in my book; it just means a place is perfectly average. The falafel sandwich ($7) is vegan by default but didn't wow me. The pita was good (soft, thin and cloth-like), but the falafel pieces themselves lacked zing. They drowned the wrap in tahini, which made for a mess; next time I'll tell them to use less. The french fries ($5 for a side) were really good: starchy, large and satisfying. Lastly, I thought the zaatar manakeesh ($1.50; vegan by default) was interesting, but didn't come together. It's essentially a piece of bread covered in zaatar and olive oil and then baked. The problem here was that it was pre-made and had been sitting in a deli case, drying out for many hours. Re-baking it made it chewy and did nothing for the dryness. This would have been great had it been made fresh on-the-spot. Wally's used to offer foule (a fava bean dish) and lentil soup, but it no longer seems to. For decent and cheap Middle Eastern food, Wally's is still fine. That said, if you want better falafel, go to Shish Cafe in St. Paul or Loon Deli in Minneapolis. read more

Wally Sakallah, from Gaza, makes some seriously good hot sauce. It's a good time to support this delish biz.

I ordered a combo meal and they instead charged me separately for the entree, fries, butter, and drink. When I pointed this out they apologized and then refused to correct it because they didn't know how. They also refused to ask a manger how to do it when I suggested it. A second time I went here has lead to a federal investigation against them which is currently pending for sexist actions on their behalf and supporting sexist employees and stereotypes. Below is the civil rights office complaint. I went to this restaurant and ordered food. The gentleman didn't know how to handle a picky order in the system, and he got a second female employee to come over to look at it. I greeted this employee how I greet all people I have seen once before but not in the last few weeks by saying, Hi. I haven't seen you in awhile. She immediately exploded off on me and was sexist towards me. She threatened me stating that because I'm a man, she would ban me from the restaurant if I sexually harassed anyone. Nobody else was treated this way and it was a directed attack specifically against me. She discriminated against me for being a man, and placed gender stereotypes onto me treating me as if I was a sexual predator. She refused to correct the transaction and then I asked to see the manager. Earlier on, I had the option to use her to take my order, and instead of choosing her, I choose the other gentleman at the counter. This is prior proof that I had no intentions of interacting with her in any way to begin with. I explained to the female manager that spoke with me what had happened. She made it very apparent that she wasn't going to do anything about it. For some reason the manager pointed out that they have cameras with audio. I told her if that's the case and she didn't believe me, we could simply watch the video. The manager refused to do this and instead said she was going to support her employees sexist actions. Not once did she ever truly consider my complaint. She was just trying get rid of me as best she could through feigned customer service. The manager then tried to change the subject and made a false claim that I was supposedly taking video of workers at the store, and that the same employee had made a complaint several months prior. I pointed out to her that this was absurd, and that if we again looked at the videos, that this claim would be proven incorrect. I have receipts showing I leave the restaurant and shop in the meantime. The few times I stayed, I sat far over in the waiting area surfing social media like other customers facing away from the kitchen or not using my phone at all. Knowing they had been caught, the manager refused to communicate further. She trespassed me taking even further retaliatory action in support of the businesses and employees sexist actions. I said I would be taking legal action and would like copies of the records, names of the people involved, and proof that a prior complaint was made by the employee to file legal suit. They refused. So they can't hide evidence and lie further, I then recorded a video of me informing them that i expect all of these records to be kept for legal suit, and then left. read more

I can't believe I didn't find out about this place sooner. Went with a group of 6 hungry people and ordered the mashawi feast, which fed all of us comfortably, and with some leftovers to take home. The salad was fresh and acidic; a nice side to have to cut through all the heaviness of the sauces and meat. On the giant platter, the pita bread was great for forming wraps, or just to enjoy on the side with some hummus. The hummus was smooth and wasn't too heavy. Underneath the pita, there was a mountain of meat and rice. The lamb chops were grilled prefectly. They were nice and tender, and had a great charcoal flavor to them. The gyro meat was well seasoned and scrumpcious. The kafta kebabs had a nice charcoal flavor as well, and were also very moist but held its shape. The chicken shawarma and chicken skewer were a tad on the dry side, but that was not an issue, as the sauces (I believe were tahini, cucumber, garlic, and spicy) made everything better. And lastly, the rice was pretty much the star of the show, pairing well with everything for a well balanced meal. We also got a side of falafels, which were extremely good. Nice and crisp, and the inside wasn't dry at all. Also all of this for about 13.50 per head? Value couldn't be better for this quality of food. Will definitely find myself back here often. read more

A friend and I grabbed some Wally's to go before a meeting and it was really delicious and pretty affordable for how much food we got. I grabbed the Falafel Deluxe sandwich (the same as falafel sandwich with some extra veggies inside) and it was flavorful and kept me really full. I grabbed a side of hummus as well which came with one pita bread but I grabbed another pita because it was a lot of hummus! I honestly should have gotten 2 extra pitas because it was so much hummus but I saved it and had the extra pita and the rest of the humus for lunch the next day - it kept really well. read more

So so so good. Wally's is doing some real-deal food at a very fair price. Portions are large enough to have left overs, and they offer some different dishes than other Levantine restaurants in town. The decor feels like you're in Levant, not Dinkytown. This is counter service, but Middle East hospitality is clearly still important here. let's start with the food quality. as a Middle Eastern, finding good quality food to match the flavor and quality like back home is hard. luckily I would it at Wally's. the quality of food exceeded my expectations. the food is fresh and made with love. the staff was very helpful and polite and I received my food fairly quickly. the dinning area and restrooms are super clean. I was shocked to notice how clean the tables and the floor is every time dine in. the atmosphere is very good as well. laid back. not noisy at all. this place is kids and family friendly yet it also great for couple or even dinning alone. I stop there at least twice a week and I love it. the prices are very reasonable. the portions are decent and the flavor is beyond mind blowing. plan a trip to them. so worth it. you will thank me later read more

Wally's is the best middle eastern food outside of heavily populated Arab/Israeli areas. The Shawarma is grilled to perfection, both chicken and beef shawarma. The hummus is traditional, garlicky, lemony, firm, and a drizzle of tahini. Served with cucumber and tomato as it should be. Cheese pie/samosa is ok, halumi fill would be more delicious. The hot sauce (the one you have to pay extra for) is OFF THE CHAIN! Vibes: this is the middle of the U of M campus, soooo very studenty, very busy, but the food is consistant, delicious, and the staff is very nice and welcoming. Wally's is definitely my go to place in Dinkytown! I know parking is usually the most annoying thing in Dinkytown because it is usually daily metered parking only but the nice thing about Wally's is that they now have a FREE PARKING LOT IN THE BACK for customers (enter through Burrito Luco side). My partner and I usually order the samosas (both the cheese and veggie ones are good), 1/2 chicken plate and spicy chicken plate with yellow rice. The desserts are also great, so we get it once in a while. Honestly- one thing that I appreciate about Wally's is the portion size! One plate is more than enough for two, we usually order more than we need to so we could eat the leftovers for lunch the next day or dinner later that night. Only thing is sometimes the chicken does get too dry, they could use more flavor and the rice seems oily at times but overall still delicious! Evenings could get pretty busy and crowded as it's a popular spot for college students but I think they do a good job keeping it clean. As for service- just average, young somewhat friendly college students who are just trying to get by- I've been there so I can't complain. read more
