Wow!! How disappointing. We drove like mad to get here early. Linda the hostess was delightful. Our server (?) was an abomination! Never brought water or napkins. Forgot and never brought gravy for husband's rice. They ran out of silverware--yes they did! So we used plastic. Thank heaven there was a napkin in the little package. We ordered fried chicken for heaven's sake!!! It was a nice venue and looked good. Maybe Sunday isn't the day to go. If you do, don't get the blonde waitress. She's not good. After completing the tour of military park in Vicksburg I was feeling tired and hungry. I was Driving aimlessly near the river to see the the lower Mississippi River Museum. I found this place hidden behind a gas station. The place was quiet and almost empty as I arrived little before the dinner time. I preferred to sit next to a window. The room was big and decorated in old style. The menu had all regular southern dishes and appetizers. Andrew was my waiter. He was very helpful in suggesting some popular dishes. I started with fried oysters. Those were average. The fried Green Tomatoes were delicious with crawfish sauce. The sauce made the difference. I loved the seafood Gumbo soup. It was excellent. The spices were perfect. I took the blackened catfish with steamed broccoli and asparagus. I think little more spicy seasoning on the catfish will be great. The steamed vegetables were overdone. Without a doubt, Walnut Hills was the best meal I've ever had in Vicksburg. Maybe one of the best meals I've had in. my. life. It's in a lovey home and the atmosphere is perfect. I ordered a Bloody Mary that was burn your lips off spicy and I loved it. For my entree I chose two appetizers...the crab cakes which were great and the fried green tomatoes topped with a spicy sauce that was loaded with crawfish. I know that some people don't like made-up words but that fried green tomato app was amazeballs. And by amazeballs I mean they were as amazing as balls. :) It was rich and delicious and there was a ton of it, especially considering it was an appetizer. I couldn't even finish the whole thing. Man oh man was it good. Our waiter was a little bit strange, but that definitely would not keep me from coming here again. We ordered so much food: Individual scores below- (1-5) Appetizers: Crab cakes- very yummy with a fantastic sauce! 4 Fried pickles- these are hand battered and served with ranch dip- fab! 5+ Entrees: Redfish Almondine HUGE portion served with salad, bread, baked potato. He loved it! 5 Fried chicken (they ask you white or dark-I got white) and I chose 3 vegetables of many- purple hull peas, green beans (very buttery flavor) & fried corn (like a corn casserole mix)- all were yummy! The fried chicken is really the best ever! The leanest white meat ever, fried with a light golden brown crust. If you're from the south like I am, it's your momma's home made fried chicken! 5+ Boiled shrimp platter (served hot or cold- he got hot) great portion and served with bread, salad, and he got the batter fries- a uniquely light crunchy battered fry! 2 (took too long to peel) Lasagna special- choice of veggies- pretty good 2.5 Fried shrimp dinner-(husband) served with salad, fries- really big shrimp, he said it took 2 bites for him to eat each shrimp and they were very fresh. This place is not an easy access off the highway. Parking is up a steep driveway in the back and limited. Street parking is available. The resturant is an old house. If you are passing through Vicksburg - it is worth leaving the highway to eat here! We were not that hungry so we opted to get the "plate lunch" special instead of the "round table". The fried chicken was great! The mac-n-cheese was baked and very good! I tried purple hull peas just to say I tried them. They were ok. Not a big fan. They give you little biscuits and cornbread. Both excellent. Tea is included in the price along with 1 meat & 2 vegetables. TRY THE COCONUT PIE! This is not like any coconut pie we have ever tasted! It was not the typical "pudding" variety. Beautiful home from the outside, very close to downtown Vicksburg. We went on Sunday for the special and the fried chicken was excellent and crispy. True Story. I'm driving in Vicksburg, it's pouring and gloomy outside and I'm cursing that every place I want to go is closed on Mondays. I'm also getting more and more lost as I make wrong turn after wrong turn. Suddenly, on my left is a sign for Walnut Hills. I had heard good things about this restaurant but thought it was too fancy for a quick dinner by myself. But I believe in culinary fate, and so I turned my car into its parking lot and headed inside. It's set in a beautiful historic home. My server was extremely kind and attentive. I ordered the fried chicken because apparently it is very famous. OH MY GOODNESS. Flaky, crispy, succulent skin. Just perfect. I also ordered the asparagus and side salad which were both very good, but nothing compared to the chicken. I felt completely zen in the dining room with the green, bright trees outside the window and the hushed atmosphere in the dining room. I said I was full but on the way out I ordered a piece of the caramel cake to go. It was HEAVEN. I had to control myself from eating it in the car on the way home. A couple years ago, I was driving cross country, friggin' hungry, and my Lonely Planet guide led me to Walnut Hills. I didn't know anything about the restaurant, I had only these things in mind: 1. I'm in the Old South 2. I wanted me some Soul Food. 3. I want to eat somewhere GOOD. A former manpal and I stopped here. Granted, Lonely Planet guides have some personality, but you gotta go with your own gut--and how the food settles IN your gut. Oh, it was so much more than just a couple plates of food. From the Walnut Hills website: "Bricks made from the soil, hardwood from the hills, went into construction of homes such as this house, built in November, 1880 by George Rogers." It's a beautiful home with round-table style eating. You're seated at the table with strangers--people from all over the country, and some from right there in Vicksburg no doubt. In front of you are heaping platters of black beans, greens, corn, cornbread, catfish, fried chicken, and more. All of it on a lazy Susan. A Wheel of Fortune, if you will. Would you like a 2nd helpin', honey child? Oh, why sho nuff, help ya'self. Excuse me, I'm so sorry... I can't help it... The South just brings this spirit out in me! Where to start, there is so much that needs to be said. First of all let me tell you what we got and then I will break it down. We started with the "crab cakes" appetizer. I must say, I have had many in my time, some from very high end restaurants. These crab cakes were (dare I say) perfect. They were moist and filled with crab and absolutely the perfect temperature. (Call me Goldie locks, but I like to be able to eat my food right when it comes). Often times crab cakes are hot on the outside and warm on the inside. These were thin enough to be consistently heated. My husband (the spicy lover) said there was a kick, I didn't get that, but the sauce did have a kick and I could have drank what was left had there been any. Moving on to the "world famous fried chicken". OK first of all I love some good fried chicken. There is nothing like a piece fresh fried chicken right out of the fryer. I would be lying to you if I told you this was the best I've ever had. Don't get me wrong it was delicious, but nothing stood out about it. The seasoning was not present in the dredge and it was simply standard fried chicken. My personal opinion is that you would be doing yourself a disservice by ordering the fried chicken because the flavor a in everything else was outstanding but "to each his own". You get two side with an entree so we got the "fried corn" and the "grits". The fried corn was some serious comfort food that I could eat every day of my life. Now to be fair, I have never had fried corn and j have nothing to compare it to, but the seasoning and the creamy taste was insanely superb. The grits had a very slight cheesy taste and although good lacked simple seasoning. Once I added a little salt and pepper we were Golden!! The waiter forgot our salad so I can't tell you about that. We got the special which was "pork loin served with sweet potato and spinach" this dish looked 5 star. We laughed when it came because it looked so over the top (see photo). It was several thin cut pieces of pork loin covered in pecans and cranberries. It was a little too sweet for me to eat an entire meal of it so I'm glad me and hubby swapped plates half way through. The sweet potato was soft and moist and the spinach was good. The sauce seemed to be like a maple syrup type base thus the sweet. Now for dessert. We were told that they had the best coconut cream pie we would ever eat. Pffft, I'll be the judge of that. We got it to go because we were stuffed to max capacity. Although I'm not sure how it could be better chilled it probably is. We ate it almost 4 hours later and let me just say. It is the BEST piece of CCP I have ever had. It's actually called "cream of coconut" pie so there may be something special that gives it the variation, but all you need to know is GET THE PIE!!! I hate pie crust and this was amazing. I could probably not have eaten the whole thing alone, so thankful for my hubby. The small five table room we were in had 3 different waiters and that sort if bugged me. They seemed to be running and that rushed atmosphere sorta ruined my relaxation mode. But overall we would definitely come back. read more

I had a nice experience at Walnut Hills, once I was able to go. I wanted to go on New Years Eve, but when I arrived it was closed. Their Instagram has posted a few days prior it would be open. That was disappointing, but I was able to go a few days later and experience the fried chicken. The fried chicken was delicious and definitely is one of the best friend chicken dishes I have had. I got the corn and spinach as sides, which were fine, but nothing special. I had a delicious cocktail and a slice of white chocolate cake to go. I found this gem of a restaurant as I was passing through Vicksburg at lunchtime. As soon as I entered I was charmed by the atmosphere--very warm and inviting. Since I was alone, I sat at the bar and was treated like royalty by my waiter. The catfish poboy was delicious, the French onion soup was dark and rich. The Cole slaw was unlike any I ever had and was divine. Not sure what their special ingredient was, and a free mimosa to cap it off. Definitely a delightful respite on my long journey. When husband said he wanted to go to Walnut Hills I was not happy. Never heard of it. We pulled into a neighborhood of adorable houses and I was smitten. Come to find out (on yelp) that it is round table style-which we love. We went in and had the most delicious meal-fried chicken (I could smell it from the parking lot) candied yams, corn puddin', and I chose mustard greens. For the salad I chose tomato aspic and for dessert Lemon Yum Yum. Everything was outstanding including the iced tea. The staff was totally polite and attentive. Prompt frequent refills on the sweet tea. Salads: Food was brought out in courses. Salads out 1st - Cole Slaw & Shoepeg Corn Salad. Best part of the meal. Shoepeg was sho-nuff the stuff! Very tasty, I would liken it to potato salad w/out potato & a good peppery kick to it. Cole Slaw was a close second, although a little wet for my taste. Main Course: Before we had finished, we received our main dishes w/ 3 sides each. Both ordered the Fried Chicken. I had all white, hubby had mixed. Chicken was definitely good, but not award winning. Hubby & I both noticed there was a little sweet to it. Not off putting, just different. Both had candied yams - had better. Broccoli au gratin - tasty, but not great, cheese could have been thicker. Mustard greens - not horrible, but I would never order them twice. Potato casserole-just plain bad. Mini cornbread & dinner roles tasted store bought. Sweet tea less sweet than not & appreciated, since one can add sweetener to their liking. Dessert: Chocolate cake came out w/ Icecream & whipped cream. Was good, but nothing special. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture to show you since my husband scarfed it down like we were running from the law between his grumbling complaints that it was "clearly a brownie & not cake". Blueberry Cobbler was also nothing special & did not come w/ icecream. Chocolate Cake is served w/ Icecream, but not berry cobbler? It's like I'm in an alternate universe. However, I asked the waitress to bring me some & there was no additional charge on our bill. Conclusion: I probably wouldn't return because the food was just ok for us (to each his/her own), but they definitely have the southern hospitality thing down, really authentically beautiful decor (my pics don't do it justice) & we left w/ full bellies. This Restaurant was charming and comfortable inside. Our food was great, and the service was friendly and attentive. I had their famous fried chicken, and my wife had a stuffed tomato with shrimp salad in it. They gave you plenty of food and it came out hot and fresh. The building is a civil war era house that has been kept in period and blended with a restaurant bar. Their were lots of locals visiting and that made me feel that the food would be great. read more

Located in a beautiful historic home, they serve a wide variety of Southern classics. I went with two colleagues from work. We tried the fried chicken, the shrimp and grits, and the fried shrimp. They were all huge portions and delicious. Definitely come hungry! Walnut Hills is also known for the variety of homemade cakes and pies. While we were all way too full for dessert, we each got a slice for the next day. Choosing from all the beautiful options is really hard work, but I ultimately decided on strawberry cake.
