I think you will only find a restaurant with the charm, great food and hospitality that Walnut Hills has in the south. Located in an old Vicksburg home in a residential neighborhood you could easily miss this place, but don't. The home still has its original drawing rooms which make up the seating area, a charming bar in the back room and a bakery case in the enclosed back porch. The menu is of simple food. Po'boys, Fried chicken, beef etc. with the typical choice of sides. We were a party of 4 and ordered an eclectic variety of dishes. Nothing disappointed, everything was fresh and hand made. Our table was blessed with newly baked pan rolls and butter. My shrimp po'boy was wonderful fresh baked Italian roll filled with hand breaded fried shrimp, pickle chips tomatoes etc. my husband who eats chicken fried steak from coast to coast says his today was better than any he had ever tasted. Our cumulative sides included fried corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, hand battered onion rings and cole slaw. We were delighted with all. Then there is dessert. We opted for slices of pie but it was so hard to choose. All desserts are made in their in house bakery. Our bill for 4, which included a beer and 3 desserts was under $150 including generous tips. Wow. We came to Vicksburg for a get away. Just to relax. We don't do chain restaurants. Or hipster type places. We like great food reasonably priced with atmosphere. Our first night here we ate at a nice place. Sunday? We weren't lucky enough to find a decent place open at the times we were hungry. Tonight we struck GOLD!!!! This place is wonderful. First off the house that this place is in was built in 1880. That is ambiance galore. And it has the feel, from the wood tables and chairs to the art work on the wall. The feel is a step back in time. On walking up the staircase to the front porch. You are met with rockers, You get the feeling you are taking a step back in time. Upon opening the door you realize you have chosen correctly. We were greeted by a friendly young hostess who used hand sanitizer upon our entry, showing us to a lovely table in a corner by a window. Kudos on the hand sanitizer. Our Waiter was a wonderfully charming young Man by the name of Kenny, he is a gem. My glass was never more then half empty and his delivery of the food didn't even allow for it to cool off any from kitchen to table . It arrived piping hot. He was friendly personable and knowledgeable. Now for the food. I grew up. Up north where gravy is alway brown. And if you are having fried chicken the gravy is definitely brown. Not that white school paste the south seems to slather all over everything. And even better the gravy was served in a gravy boat so you could control the potato to gravy ratio to your liking. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly just enough salt and pepper and they were not a box of instant potatoes. The spinach was also cooked properly not boiled into a green mush as so many places tend to do. But the show stopper? The fried Chicken. The crust was reminiscent of a Sunday dinner back home at my grannies. I can imagine the chef shaking the chicken in a brown paper bag with the flour and seasoning to get it just right. If you are of an age you know what I am talking about here. I was unable to eat all of my dinner not because I didn't try. But I just had to enjoy the cornbread rolls that were delivered fresh from the oven and the butter was melting down my fingers. Dinner was excellent. And this place restored my faith in the availability of a good meal in a tourist town. The nicest thing about it? Every one of the employees were polite professional and wore their masks at all times while in the different dining rooms. In these days And times it is nice to seeing a business taking the responsibility to protect their customers as well as their staff. Kudos to this place. We came here on a recommendation, with high expectation for good food. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We ordered the catfish with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes. the catfish was so muddy tasting. The potatoes were just awful. Were they instant potatoes?? No, they had a taste that I have never associated with potatoes. It was like they were rotten or had been boiled with dirty sock water. The gravy was lumpy and had a similar weird taste to the mashed potatoes. It could only be salvaged by loads of salt and pepper. My son had the chicken tenders and thought they were delicious ‍ So at least that was good. Our server was delightful. Overall, due to the off putting food we will not be coming back. read more

Not only was the location beautiful (and a very short walk from our B&B), but the food and service were excellent. The lunch portions were very generous and everything was delicious. The blackened fish was very well seasoned but not very spicy (which was fine with us). The fried chicken was cooked perfectly - crispy crust but still juicy inside. I ordered the lunch portion of chicken (you can choose white or dark meat) and the meal came with a salad, the chicken (I got a breast and a wing since I ordered white meat), three sides and a dessert. Every bite was divine! For dessert, I ordered the coconut pie since it is my husband's favorite and he said it was delicious. My son ordered a slice of the chocolate mousse cake and I ordered a slice of the white chocolate cake. First of all, the slices were HUGE - all three of us could easily have shared one slice after the huge lunch we just ate. The plus side was it meant we had take to take home as leftovers. :) While the chocolate cake was very moist and delicious, it was the white chocolate cake that blew us all away. It was the best white cake I have ever had in my life. Even my chocoholic son preferred the white chocolate cake to the chocolate mousse cake! The restaurant was incredibly busy but our waitress was very attentive and our food was out pretty quick, especially considering the small kitchen and packed restaurant. We will definitely be making a trip back to this restaurant if we are ever back in Vicksburg! read more

Very bizarre experience. Would have loved to review their food, but they close before the posted time. You park in back and walk around to the front. We see the sign next to the door says they close at 9pm. It's 8:10 but the door is locked. We go around to the entrance in back and wait in the front little seating area. We see people seated but no staff. Finally a waiter crosses by and says someone will be right with us. We wait over 15 minutes and finally flag another waiter down. They inform us they closed at 8. The setup is a bit strange - I walked my dog past the beautiful front of the building on 4-5 occasions during a recent visit to Vicksburg and wouldn't have known they were open - but most people apparently park in the back and enter on that side. After cooking for days over Thanksgiving we finally ordered takeout for our final Saturday night in Vicksburg and Walnut Hills didn't disappoint. Fried chicken was really good and surprisingly the fried catfish may have been my favorite overall - the portion was huge but most importantly it's rare to find catfish with perfect texture and seasoning. Very well done. Tamales were different but good as was the pimento cheese & sausage plus both desserts we ordered were quite good. The only complete miss for me was the side of green beans, by all means don't waste your choice or your calories on [presumably canned] green beans but everything else was as good or better as I would expect at home in New Orleans. I'm looking forward to future Vicksburg trips and visits to Walnut Hills. Bravo! read more

The menu offers you two ways to go. You can order a plate meal or you can eat at the "Roundtable". the photograph shows what they served the two of us. Pulled pork that was amazing and much better than the pulled-pork we ever get. Wonderful Southern Fried Chicken. A very unique mustard-based coleslaw. And a dish called the chicken Rotel, which is a warm spaghetti pasta dish with cheese and chicken and tomatoes among other things. and of course jambalaya. There were about five other side dishes which were all very good. 23 bucks a person, and more food than the average football lineman could eat. but the reason to try the Roundtable is the variety. Main was shrimp & grits, which was out-of-can cheese sauce with two tiny shrimp slathered over grits - so terrible it was funny. Greens were bland but okay. Black-eyed peas were overcooked and mushy. Dessert was mediocre apple crisp in a tiny one-quarter portion. Service was indifferent and rushed. Overall: ridiculously overpriced bad food, with the potato salad and shrimp & grits really taking awards for worst ever. chose to dine here to celebrate a bit of an occasion after reading reviews of their southern cuisine and famous fried chicken and desserts. Dining experience is in an old southern plantation style home built in 1880. Gleaming wood floors and period furniture pieces add to the atmosphere. Full bar available. When you enter through what seems to be the backdoor, you'll see a huge case of cakes and pies and other desserts that look tremendous. Many distinctly southern menu items including pimento cheese spread and tomato aspic. Our server seemed very experienced and had a great sense of humor. And all the answers to our questions. After looking over the choices, I went with a cup of gumbo to start. It was good but light on flavor-missing much in the way of herbs/file. Plenty of sausage and chicken (plus a good-sized bone). Wife chose the Boiled Shrimp Dinner with the shrimp served cold plus slaw and bread. I knew before arrival that I would be ordering the award winning Southern Fried Chicken Dinner, served with my sides of green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. Dinners served with biscuits that were barely bigger than a domino but were soft and fluffy. A nice touch. The only negative on the shrimp dinner was the messiness of peeling them. They were perfectly cooked and sweet. The slaw and the bread were just average. My fried chicken was outstanding. Light breading and cooked just right. The dark meat of the thigh and leg was juicy and tender. I left nothing but bare bones behind. The green beans were nothing special I'm afraid. Slightly overcooked and light on any spice. Where's the spice or pork/bacon I've experienced in other southern establishments? Definitely needs it. They may be catering to a more mainstream taste. The mashed potatoes were again perfect. Creamy and smooth. Could eat these all day. But the gravy was a disappointment. It had a strange after taste that was unpleasant. So just added some more butter to the potatoes. As we progressed through our meal, unfortunately our server started to get stretched thin and it became harder to get her attention for long periods of time. Eventually she made her way back to us and we ordered dessert. The Chocolate Mousse Cake was the choice. It came as a huge wedge of "fudgy yumminess" to quote my wife. So big we had to take some with us. I'm sure that all the other dessert choices are just as good so you could have a different choice each day for a couple of weeks. Good reason they are well known for their baking. Even though I felt like some offerings were lacking, I'd definitely plana stop here for a good old-fashioned taste of the south. read more

This review is specific to the food. The ambiance was good in a historic charm building but the service was a bit rushed. I was looking forward to a real southern chicken dinner. What I got was deep fried greasy tasteless pieces of hot chicken mildly warm mashed potato but good asparagus. No flavor in the batter other than grease. Tried the oysters as an appetizer which were a bit better but one oyster was as tough as leather and couldn't be eaten. I understand that you can't always get the perfect oysters, but I did expect better based on the reviews. My wife had chicken also and said it was OK and tried dessert of pecan pie with the same response. I tasted that and chose not to order one for myself. It tasted like the pecans were cooked prior to baking leaving an overdone taste. Crust had little flavor. I grew up with southern pan fried chicken and this wasn't it. read more

We wanted to try so traditional southern food while passing through Mississippi and we were not disappointed. We got the corn & crab bisque which was so creamy and had chunks of crab in it. We also go the seafood gumbo epinette with garlic bitter toast. It was very flavourful and clean. For our main meal my husband had the fried chicken. Man loves his fried chicken. It was lightly battered and wasnt too oily. This was pure juiciness. It had a buttery flavour too it. I had the Mardi Gras Seafood Grits. It was seasoned very well with a little kick of spice. It came with shrimp on top which were delicious! It was very filling but an excellent choice. We ordered pie to go because we were so satisfyingly full and I am glad we did. I got the coconut cream and my husband got the chocolate pie. They were amazing, my husband tried to steal mine. :-) Mine was a perfect balance of coconut and cream and it had coconut shavings on top. My husband enjoyed his.
