With something like electrical work, I've learned that it pays not to be premature in an assessment of the work...hence this belated review. A few years ago, after a severe storm, a fallen tree literally ripped the power line from my house. This was still in the heat of the DC area summer, so going without power for very long was not an option. Fortunately, my homeowner's insurance covered the damage (as well as lodging in the meantime - which I found out later). It took some time, and a few estimates, but Walsh Electric was responsive, well informed and reasonably priced, so I chose them to complete the extensive work required. Every step of the process was done professionally and more quickly than expected - from adding a new anchor to the house, to running new cable, to switching out the meter, to reconnecting to the box. Even when they hit an unexpected snag with the inspectors, they informed me immediately of the issue, and had someone available the next day to explain the situation first-hand and provide a quote for the solution. Basically, with older houses, it's sometimes a crapshoot on whether the inspectors will grandfather the existing setup, or if they will enforce current codes. In my case, the inspector wanted to apply the current codes...which meant running some new electrical lines (in addition to what had already been completed) as well as installing new ground posts. Walsh was extremely reasonable in explaining the situation and providing a quote for the additional work after the explanation. They commenced with the follow-up work later that same week and passed final inspection the following week. All told, it did take some time, but not Walsh's fault at all. Getting multiple quotes, getting permits, and waiting for inspectors are what racked up the days. Anyway, there have been zero issues with the professional electrical work done by Walsh since installation, and really appreciate the responsiveness throughout the process. I only wish that I knew in advance that lodging would be covered by insurance as I may have chosen some nicer places to stay in the days away! I wouldn't hesitate to reach out them again if I need additional work and have already recommended them several times to others. read more

I hired the service for my dryer plug and outlet. The contractor came he did do a good job. But instead of him charging me the money that was agreed on which was 180 dollars. He made a bill for 484.00 dollars. This was a rip off. I was surprised because he worked on the the project was only 30 minutes. But on the bill he made it look like he was there for 2 and a half hours. I will never hire anyone from this company again. read more

Walsh Electric was a lifesaver! In the aftermath of one of those crazy summer storms, a tree fell in my yard and pulled the electrical connection from the base attached to my house. It was sweltering outside and losing electricity on top of having an enormous tree in the yard was incredibly stressful. I called Walsh because I had seen good things about them on my local NextDoor site, and I am so happy I did so. Chris at Walsh Electric went above and beyond to help me during a crisis. His attention to detail and knowing what needed to be done to get the permit from the City of Alexandria was incredible. I can't say enough good things about this company. They helped me out when I was frantic and in need. They had an excellent, skilled, safe electrician come to the house and had the electricity hooked back up in no time so it would be safe for Dominion Energy to turn it back on. Had a 5 star experience using Walsh at our residence. After getting several estimates from other electricians in the area, we chose Walsh due to their fair pricing in comparison to other companies which all wanted to charge ridiculous amounts of money for parts fees, travel fees, etc. We had two flushmount light fixtures installed and then a switch plate reworked. Our technician, Fernando, arrived on time and did an excellent job and completed everything in one hour. Also he wore a mask and shoe covers in respect to coronavirus. Some great work, some disappointments. Walsh came highly recommended by friends. Pricing was fair but not cheap - about $500. We had numerous new lighting fixtures to be wired & installed and several outlets needed to be fixed. The electrician seemed very thorough, and was on time and very professional. He did all the work on the fixtures and outlets carefully and satisfactorily. However, as he was doing that work, he said he'd checked our electrical panel and that we needed a new circuit breaker (a GFCI, I believe), which he installed. About a month later, a bunch of our upstairs electricity blew out because our surge protector failed. It was on a weekend and we hired another company who was available sooner to fix it. It turns out we didn't need a new circuit breaker, and that our surge protector was old and an "off-brand" type that is well known to be unreliable. I would have hoped Walsh's panel check would have detected that - they looked at it for enough time to recommend a new circuit breaker. In addition, and worse, some of the wires in the panel were dangerously loose and apparently hadn't been adequately checked in years -- another thing that seems like it should have been detected by Walsh's panel check. It cost several hundred dollars to tighten/repair the wires in the panel box, replace the subpar surge protector with a quality one with a warranty, and to take out the unnecessary circuit breaker. Obviously I can't prove that Walsh Electric was responsible for what happened, and it was certainly a complicated problem. However, it seems clear that Walsh's panel check missed some huge issues that posed major potential problems -- and instead focused on a circuit breaker that apparently wasn't needed -- because we ended up needing an expensive repair within a month of Walsh Electric's visit. read more

I bought an older house not too long ago and needed smoke alarms installed for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Not too hard, just hard-wired, inter-connected alarms with strobe lights and sound. It stands to reason that if you can install hard-wired alarms for hearing people that adding the strobe light for people who can't hear wouldn't be so hard because you are supposedly an electrician.This is not the case though. This was the first place that knew what I was talking about and had done this before. What I am especially happy about was the clarity of communication. The estimate I was given was equal to the bill. We emailed back and forth to clarify all the details of the job and what I was told to expect is what actually ended up happening. Other DC repair people may want to consider trying to implement such a system. This type of work is a little bit expensive but your home should be safe for you. I was having an issue with hot water in my house for the last few days and I needed an electrician to resolve it for me. The issue was a circuit breaker problem. Walsh Electric is very close to my house and in fact they knocked off $20 of our bill because of our close location. The woman on the phone was very friendly too and was much appreciated. The technician, Jose, came over in less than 30 minutes. He was very friendly and attentive. It took him more time to take the wooden panels off the breaker box in the basement than it did to actually fix the issue. We had a laugh b/c of that. It took some work to get the wooden panels off the wall which caused a mess on the floor but Jose was nice enough to clean it up for us. Walsh Electric comes highly recommended by me! read more

I have served on the board of directors of my HOA for several years. In that time our community has contracted with Walsh for several commercial projects. Over the past year Walsh has failed to deliver on contractual time commitments. When asked about the time delays the owner of the company has simply passed the blame to suppliers, to outside parties....basically to anyone else but Walsh. I do not recommend working with this company on commercial-grade projects. I cannot attest to their small-scale or residential work. read more

I have never Yelped before, but I had to take time out to review this "company." Their prices and negotiating tactics border extortion. Had a guy come to my place to diagnose a simple problem, took him 10 minutes. I politely signaled to him that his work was done he should leave ... he continued to dabble around for an extra 30 mins scribbling random notes while I was on a phone call. Ends up charging me $150 bucks for doing absolutely nothing. I call in to ask their payment policies and why one person was telling me they charge hourly and the other one that they charge a flat fee. They tried to threaten me with collections. I don't have time for this nonsense so I ended up paying him. Thought I would leave this experience here. DO NOT use this place if you have any respect for your hard earned money. i called this place to get an estimate for 7 cat 6a cable runs. the house is new construction and still framed. he wanted to charge me to go look at the job and refused to even answer whether 175$ per run was reasonable. when I asked him for some range of pricing he got all condescending on the phone. "I've been doing this 35 years, we donrt ball park pricing, blah blah." i have a feeling they expect to only do business with dumb people who pay the bill when it shows. avoid these people. read more

I needed a new circuit that started at one corner of the townhouse in the basement and went to the other side of the townhouse, upstairs, behind the microwave. I was told by one contractor that it would require a bunch of holes in the drywall. The first quote from Walsh actually said the same thing. The owner went straight over to look at it at the first mention over the phone. He got a senior technician to do the work and no holes were cut in the drywall! What a time and money saver! read more

We recommend Walsh Electric without any reservations. It was really a great pleasure working with Richard Walsh on the installation of our home generator. He went above and beyond what had been contracted to ensure that the very difficult project was completed in a satisfactory way. Because our house is old and because of township regulations, the work required extra time and effort. Rich was cheerful, optimistic and never once asked for extra compensation for the extra time and effort that was required (of course we compensated him and he accepted the money graciously). He even made several additional electrical repairs without charging extra. Not only that, but he considered and accepted some of my suggestions; many contractors get irate when a homeowner offers advice. He made me feel part of his team!
