I recently purchased Walt's Chicken from the 1303 N. Lincoln St., Wilmington, DE 19805. The service was quick & pleasant. Unfortunately, the sides dishes were not up to par. The maccorinim & cheese tasted like fish and the cole slaw tasted like metal. I had loves Walt's chicken for years, but had not had it for 6 years due to moving out of state. Very pleased with the chicken. Ordered the 6 piece box with all dark meat. It was dropped HOT and moist. Added an Ali Bean Pie. Couldn't resist. Friendly staff (Andrea) complimented me on my loc'd hair soon as I walked inside. Also, she listened to my "accent" and asked if it was my friend time. Yes indeed it was and she grabbed a chicken wing for me to try. Kind gesture for a sample taste. The neighborhood isn't "pretty" but feels safe. Parked around the corner on the street. Walked past many people of color minding their business, sitting on the porch and even saw beautiful little gardens in different yards. -1 star because chairs were stacked outside but otherwise there's no place to sit and eat. read more

Walts has some great chicken, best in wilmington and its obviously deserved with there number of awards on the wall. I also tried the banana pudding and it was fantastic. The chicken is nice and juicy, the fries come seasoned with old baby and probably pepper really delicious. The mac and cheese is also pretty good, not my favorite style of mac and cheese but its still delicious. Lot of options to choose from, recently got the 2 piece I regret not getting more. The dark meat was really juicy. Highly recommend coming to walts if you're in the Wilmington area or even if you're in Delaware looking for the best chicken around. read more

I found Walt's yesterday when looking up another soul food place in Reading Terminal Market in Philly, since someone said it's better than the place I looked up. As a fried chicken fiend, I was intrigued, and bookmarked it for a visit. Then, the brilliant idea of having chicken and waffles for brunch on New Year's Day occurred to me, so after calling to ensure that they were open, I paid a visit at around 10:45 this morning. The chicken was excellent, with the light, crisp coating and juicy, moist interior characteristic of well-fried chicken. It's definitely leaps and bounds above chain fast food fried chicken in quality, easily beating all other fried chicken I've tried in Northern DE. The waffle, however, was softer and less crispy than I would have liked. I ordered the wing and breast combo, which came with the aforementioned pieces of chicken plus a waffle and condiments (syrup and margarine). The flavors combined well, creating the sweet-savory harmony that is the hallmark of well-made chicken and waffles. It beats the famous chicken and waffle place I tried in Atlanta (Gladys Knight's), but doesn't quite meet the standard of my favorite place serving this dish in Pittsburgh (Meat and Potatoes). Nevertheless, it's quite good for the area in which it's located. In addition to the chicken and waffles, I ordered a sweet potato pie. Its flavor was appropriately sweet and well seasoned, but the bottom was a bit soggier than I would have liked. I noticed that the label of the bean pie said "Universal Baking Co." (the sweet potato pie's label didn't), leading me to believe that the desserts aren't made on site. While I didn't try any of the side dishes, I wonder if this may also be the case with them, based on other reviewers' comments. Black beans were for sale today due to it being New Year's, but I didn't notice this until I'd already ordered (not sure if they're offered regularly as a side). Overall, I was pleased with the quality of the food that I received from Walt's, and would definitely return for the fried chicken, and perhaps to try some of the sides. The prices are also very reasonable (the chicken and waffles was $5.85 and the sweet potato pie was $2.95), which is always a plus. As others have mentioned, it's take-out only, so plan to take your food home or elsewhere to consume it. Bon appetit! read more

Believe the reviews here. The chicken here is worth the drive. The parking here is nothing short of inconvenient, and I'll still suggest this fried bird to anyone. I can't cosign the sides since I didn't try anything else. But the chicken served here is crispy on the outside, hot and moist on the inside. Wow, Yelp reviewers were right on the mark with their great reviews regarding this restaurant. There was a small line when we arrived but it moved very quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful and allowed me to charge my phone for a while. Parking is limited on the residential street. The chicken is delicious and honestly some of the best I've ever had. It was juicy, moist and the seasoning was perfect with a spicy kick. I even enjoyed the tasty French fries that came with my chicken meal. I had the three piece and just knew I would have some chicken for later but that didn't happen because I was licking my fingers after my meal was done. LOL My goddaughter and I sat outside at their quaint eating area and feasted. However, this spot is more of a takeout spot. I met the manager who was very friendly and humbled when I told him how good the chicken was and about all the positive reviews online. Well, I was disappointed and had expectations. There's not many southern/soul food resting Wilmington. We ran across this one. Even PresiBiden recommended. The macaroni salad was such a small portion, though my sister said it was good. The string beans had no flavor. The Mac n cheese was bland. My mom said her collards was made with vinegar, which she doesn't like. My rice and beans had a small stone in it, maybe rice wasn't cleaned properly. They also threw in a sample of the fish! Chicken - damn, inside was flavorful and moist but the outside was so overcooked that I couldn't even chew it. The breading on the outside did not appear to have really any kind of distinguishable flavor other than hard. Corn on the cob - it was more like a mush on a cob. Coleslaw - it was okay. I could eat it but it had a weird twang. Definitely was not made fresh. Spicy rice - it was spicy! But it still just tasted like white rice. Mashed potatoes - the lid broke during transportation. Good thing they had put it in a plastic bag or there would have been mashed potatoes and gravy everywhere. I tried to get out all of the plastic bits from the lid that I could see but then my very first bite had some plastic in it. Not a big deal because I didn't like it anyway. It had a fish flavor to it. Fried fish - I don't like fish. But the guy walked away to go get it before I could stop him. Then I didn't have the heart to tell him I don't like fish when he did come back. I gave it to one of the ladies at the job site that I'm working at. She's going to take it home for dinner so I don't know if she will like it or not. It breaks my heart to have to write a post like this. I don't understand why they get such high reviews. Walt's is one of the few food institutions in Wilmington. It has literally been around for decades. The original store closed a few years ago. I'm glad that they still sell their mouth watering chicken at this location. The parking can be tricky and the surroundings can be a little intimidating to people not use to the area. This location is small and is take-out only. I usually order the breast special, which comes with a breast, wing, and French fries. The chicken is fried golden brown and is delicious. The chicken is always moist. The skin has a great crunch and flavor. I can't walk out of Walt's without getting a bean pie. Now a bean pie might sound crazy, but trust me, it tastes great. If you like sweet potato pie, you will like the bean pie. The side dishes are traditional soul food items. I haven't tried any of the side dishes. Thus, I can't recommend if they are worth trying or not. The service is fast and friendly. If you are in the area and your craving some fried chicken, do yourself a favor and stop by Walt's. read more

I do a Walt's lunch for my homeroom every year to celebrate the end of the year and it is a huge fave for the students - they LOVE it. Great staff as well. Usually food is tasty at this main establishment but if the help doesn't like you you'll receive stale, hardened old bay fries with little old bay seasoning on it. Chicken looks dried out and eight hours old. The women staff wore scarves on their heads like mamies in the 1800s serving up dried out chicken and fries that been sitting over an hour. This was a rush hour Friday. Don't come here unless its a Sunday and you've arranged for pick up for your establishment or fresh from church. This is the time when the owner maybe there looking over the help. Sometimes the owner is here and you'll still receive hard, stale fries. Never ends with this location. They seem to have changed their recipe, I have bought fish platters the last two months and it was so spicy hot that no one could eat it. They seem to have added so much cheyanne pepper to the batter they cook the fish in.
