I love this country store!! My phone ran out of juice so I couldn't take photos. Bummer. I call it country because of its location-- it's out in the middle of nowhere in a small strip mall. The store has a small town feel and everyone is friendly. The store is a nice size and easy to navigate. This is especially important since I'm having hip and back problems. I love sockeye salmon and they always have it in stock. I usually purchase 4 at a time. The cashiers are always friendly and welcoming and the service is spot on. In addition to the salmon, I love their cranberry walnut muffins. They are made fresh daily. Like most grocery stores, Walt's has pretty much everything you'd expect from a grocery store. Walt's has always been known for the quality of their meat and produce. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. The produce is iffy and depending on the butcher working on any given day, it is hit or miss on meat. I purchased Italian sausage from the meat department, which I understand they make their own. The texture was inedible. Buy local only works if the place you are purchasing from stands behind the products that they sell. read more

I shop at the Crete location. Great store! Always clean. Very rarely are they out of items. Very nice people. Great service overall.

Tonight I stopped in to pick up a few items at the crete location after work and this location never has had the best customer service but tonight they took bad service to the next level. As I wait in line behind two other people as there are three lines open and three to four customers per line the lady working the line sticks a registered closed sign in the lane between one customers food and two of us that had been waiting. I kindly asked if she was closing the line even though there are still people waiting and in the rudest tone ever she bluntly said, "YES I DID". At that point I decided to approach the customer service counter and told the person there what had happened. She smiled and said the lady on six. To which I replied yes. To which she replied well she's going home as if to say who cares if you waited in line for a while and now get to start over in a new line. Anyway no attempt was made to help me out so I politely exited the store and made my way to Strack Van Til Tonight showed me that my repeated monthly grocery shopping at your store is very unappreciated. Would you shop here again if this happened to you? I understand that the lady needed to go home but the store was busy and closing lanes with a backed up store is bad but closing lanes with people waiting in them while busy is far worse. I have a job too and needed to feed my family and ended up driving out of my way to go to another grocery store. Then the lack of customer care or service and oh-well attitude of the customer server (possible manager) to take the cake. Contacted customer service and not so much as a polite response. Terrible produce selection. Meat is way under par and often past it's prime. Store is dirty and run down. Employees are unhelpful, rude, and slow. Poorly managed location. Do yourself a favor and go to Jewel or Stack Van Till. read more

Had the worst experience at Crete walts tonight. Rude cashier rude bagger and the worst manager. Been coming here for the past 10 years. Never again will I shop there again. Treated so badly and poor customer service. Trying to support local business and this is how you are. Treated. Wound up leaving the grocery and shopped elsewhere. I love Walt's food store. I've been shopping here ever since I moved to Crete. The people are friendly, the produce is fresh, the bakery is fantastic and it's close to home. They also contribute to the community. Prices can be a little high, sometimes, but you have to shop defensively wherever you go. read more

All I can say is it's surreal. It's like you just fell back into the 50s. The selection sucks it's unhealthy a vegan or vegetarian might as well not even go here. The music is creepy and people just stare at you without asking to help. read more

I've come here multiple times because it's the only grocery store on my way home from work. I can never find a single thing I need. If you're vegan, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AT THIS STORE. They have absolutely nothing for vegetarian, vegan, organic or gluten-free people. read more

I don't normally rate grocery stores since they would typically be 3 stars, in my opinion. However, the extra star here is simply for service. I stopped by this location without any prior experience with Walt's food stores. I immediately wasn't super happy with the produce selection as it lacked some produce I needed like tomatillos and Anaheim peppers, however, I picked a perfect avocado. While I was picking through the bin of old cubanelles, an employee stopped me and said he had a new box in back. I was surprised by his effort to go out of his way, and also the peppers were flawless. That service effort did it for me. I didn't spend much time in the other aisles except to find a can or jar of green salsa since they didn't have tomatillos. The Latino/Asian foodstuff isn't labeled on the aisle markers so I only found it when I was about to checkout. Salsa and soy sauce can be found in the dog food aisle and the only green salsa they had was Taco Bell brand... This won't be me first stop for specialty food, but it's a convenient enough stop on my way home if I ever need the basics. read more

I don't normally rate. I had a reason to call because I had some meat spoil, and I noticed some of the reviews. I've always had wonderful experiences at the Crete location, and from time-to-time have shopped the Homewood location. I do like Crete better. The woman I just spoke to on the phone was nice as she could be. All my problems have been dealt with. My boyfriend once asked for $20 back on his debit card, and he forgot to get it from the cashier. The next day, the cashier had it set aside in an envelope for him. read more

we stumbled upon this grocery store while visiting the Badlandz nearby. we found some pretty good bargains at this place! Mind you, there were a few over priced items, but by and large I ended up doing most of my grocery shopping here and saving a nice chunk of change! Of course, they are not too good when it comes to stocking "ethnic" food items, but they had a really good basic grocery food selection, and no need for any cards to get sale prices! I was impressed! Been shopping here for years. Still come here periodically although I now live 10 miles further away but still periodically have business in Indiana. Can't beat the occasional sale prices on exactly what I need. Sale prices on soda are great. Too bad this feeds my soda addiction. Always found the store clean and check out clerks courteous. However, employees at the meat/deli counter still seem to need some courtesy training. Never was happy with the attitudes of the Crete residents who shop there. Snobs who have no reason to act snobish!! Overall, I still make the trip to shop here about twice per month after reviewing the weekly sale paper. read more

Good grocery store in the hinterlands. Service is fine, though one or two cashiers seem to take ornery pills before their work day begins. Watch out for items marked on sale. Unfortunately it iS the convenience that keeps me goi.g to Walts. Yes tjey have great meat however, their produce is like a lottery. You never know if you are goi.g to get fresh or spoiled produce in any of tjeir packaged goods. When you buy strawberries, they look okay through the packaging but when you get it home, you find spoilage in the package. The same goes for romaine hearts, it's a crap shoot. This only seems to be a problem at the Crete store. I jave shopped their Dyer store and it is much much better. We need another grocery store in Crete! read more

Most of the produce is inedible or goes bad within a matter of days. The "bruised and reduced" section, featuring rotting fruits and vegetables is a joke. Salmonella anyone??!! Several times, I have not been able to locate an item I need. When I asked an employee if they have said item, they have responded, "I don't know". Really??!! Great meat, vegetables and fruit. Prices are good; value is better. Reason for 4 stars vs 5 stars - they sometimes drop some of my favorite items; however other Walt's stores may have the products. The privately owned store is clean and the staff is great. With the Ace Hardware next store - you do not have to move your car! read more
