I tried 3 other locations and was given a full hour to learn, and one gym even offered me a free week trial. At Studio 1908, I felt a bit rushed. Their pricing was also noticeably higher than other gyms by almost $100. Most of the other gyms I visited were around $180 to $200 per month with no down payment required. One last thing. I have the suspicion that they heavily encourage people to leave 5 star reviews, because some of the reviews don't feel fully accurate compared to my experience.

Not knowing if my son would even like the classes, I was a bit hesitant to take it on (it's not cheap). Students go 2-3 times a week which, at this age (my son is 4.5), feels like a lot and limits him from trying other things. But, they had a one-month trial that felt reasonable and he ended up LOVING his classes (we added a 3-month membership on in hopes he will continue to stick with it). I do wish there was a once a week class option (at half the price), but this seems to be standard practice, so we're giving it a shot. As for the instructors, they are absolutely amazing with the kids. You can tell they are genuinely having fun. They have fair/reasonable expectations for the students in terms of focus and participation, but they are firm and make clear what is expected. There are almost as many girls as boys in the classes and they encourage everyone equally. They know how to change the class up and make it fun. I feel my son is in a good place based on his enthusiasm and reactions during class. Each class has a similar structure, but different practices and my kid is really enjoying them. I use his belt promotion checklist to my advantage! I was concerned with the MMA connection that the class would be ran by a bunch of meat heads teaching kids to fight, but it's nothing like that...very friendly, positive environment that I am happy to continue exploring.

Many of the BJJ teachers and BJJ students attend the main Renzo Gracie academy and share their techniques with the school. Muay Thai class is lead by two experienced fighters who also compete in local matches. Many class times to work with my schedule, and adequate open mat time to practice techniques or sparring rolls is great. The academy also has seminars to learn different techniques. Seminars in the past have included notable BJJ/MMA stars such as Rafael "Sapo" Natal, Gregor Gracie, Robson Gracie Jr. and Michele Nicolini. Big plus, walk from PATH is less than 10 mins, or if I drive in on the weekends, ample parking. It also helps this strip mall has an Acme supermarket to do errands after class. School is very clean, has a super friendly vibe, with many of us coming from NYC, Jersey City, Hoboken or other areas. Great mix of long time BJJ students, wrestlers or people looking for a fun workout.
