This place used to be a staple for me for years when I lived in the area. This was before Yelp became popular and I had the opportunity to review one of the few good sushi spots in Middlesex County. Trust me, living in nyc I was spoiled with good sushi, and is hard to come by in the area. I was excited to get take out from here last week, and sadly I was disappointed with the freshness of the sushi. Wasabi 34 will never be confused with a top notch restaurant, but what it had going was decent sushi and cooked food at a great value. After a long hiatus, the sushi rice was just as just as I remembered it - good flavor and nice texture. The size of the sushi pieces and rolls above average. When it came to freshness of the fish, something was fishy! I'm not sure if it was just an isolated thing, or they decided to throw out quality control, but there's just so much soy /wasabi/spicy sauce that can conver up the fishy taste! The way i used to remember Wasabi 34 was creative rolls, fresh sushi/sashimi, good cooked food and good prices. I will give it another shot in the future and hopefully give it another star. I also want to mention they have a sister restaurant in East Brunswick and they have a similar menu and quality of food (a few years back). read more

I came here on a Friday night to have dinner with a friend. As I pulled into the parking lot it seemed a bit small and not well maintained. The interior was outdated. Service was typical. The waiter forgot to bring out rice with our entree so we had to flag him down. The sushi that I ordered was good. I heard that they had *fresh wasabi* available. Definitely try this with your sushi! However the waiter should have informed us about the fresh wasabi and the extra cost. I didn't mind paying extra ~$1 but maybe for others it would have been a good FYI. *Chicken and Broccoli. Wasabi House. My Dads favorite restaurant. I eat here all the time with him. I love the Pork Tonkasu - it's a must try. The dipping sauce is phenomenal....I'm not a raw sushi fan - I only eat cooked rolls. They make it just how I like it. They used the rice paper per my request, and even gave me sesame seeds on the side....they also have fresh wasabi here- There's nothing like it. My family eats raw sushi and swear by it. They eat this stuff up by the platter full. We also ordered a mango salad which I asked for them to add avocado on top - yum! I usually love the banana tempura dessert however tonight I was stuffed. As you walk in the door the first thing that hits you is a odor. And not a good one but I said okay anyway ( knowing how good their food is) and we sat down. While sitting the odor is lingering. We order. I look around and the window shade that was once white is all shades of filthy. It was Absolutely disgusting my mouth hung open and not from drooling at food. The carpet you can see not only needs to good vacuuming it should be removed it is absolutely disgusting. . As we are getting food to our table I could not enjoy it because of the horrible odor of the restaurant. You could tell they were trying to hide the odor with some sort of cleanser. Which clearly did not work. It only made it worse . I don't know how this place stays open and passes the Board Of Health inspection!!!! It is a shame because they have very good food, but you can't enjoy it with the stink. I look across to my husband and say " if it smells this bad out here I can only imagine how bad it is in the kitchen where we can't see". Never will come back . Not unless we want to get sick. I was very suprised by this place. All the food was better than expected. The pork tonkatsu was crispy and flavorfull. My three year old actually ate a bunch of it. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The matawan roll was my favorite seconded by the smoke roll. For an appetizer we had the takoyaki, the breading was like a beignet with a savory filling topped with a sweet sauce. We came here with some friends for dinner after reading the reviews and were glad we did! I had called the restaurant to see if reservations were needed for a party of 6 and she took my name down. When we got there, it turned out no reservations were needed because it was almost empty. Place feels very cavernous. We ordered Sashimi yellowtail dinner, seafood pancake, chicken wings, salmon roll, wasabi salad with dressing on side, tuna, salmon and mackerel and Chefs special 2. Everything was delicious and the sushi tasted fresh. Service was a bit slow. It took a while for us to get our sushi order even though there were hardly any customers there. This is my Go to place for sushi super fresh and for me great service esp for delivery - very patient over the phone never any issues quick and fast. The rolls are always fresh and lots of fish not stuffed with rice. The aged tofu is addicting ! Haven't tried the other appetizers but even writing this is making me hungry I'll be going shorty ! I grew up in this area and let's just say 'for the most part'...it isn't a very diverse environment (especially compared to Edison, NJ), but I have to say this place has top quality sushi. I ordered some classic nigiri and a hotate (scallop) roll that were extremely fresh and delicious. Of course, there are basic items for the broader clientele like chicken teriyaki that will make you think this place is generic. Ordered sushi sashimi combo and the tuna was gray. It literally looked cooked but was not. Wouldn't even it the tuna and tried the rest of the fish and even the rice was not good. Love love love the sushi and rolls at Wasabi House! The fish here is super fresh and that is the most important thing for a sushi restaurant! My favorite rolls are the Fire Roll and the Mardi Gras Roll (crawfish - so unique and delicious!). I have eaten in as well as gotten take out and have been pleased with both options. The decor for the restaurant is a little old fashioned, but hey as long as it keep the price down! The service staff was friendly. One other thing I like about them is that they have fresh wasabi if you ask for it which I have never seen outside of Japan! . Every other restaurant around here only have wasabi paste, which FYI is really fake wasabi/ green horseradish. I have noticed their special rolls are priced a lot lower than other restaurants so I always take advantage of that when I go! v(^.^) Highly recommend! read more

We used to eat here frequently before a competitor opened a couple hundred of yards away. We visited for lunch today as Wasabi34 has lunch specials on Sunday. I'll start with the good things: - Lunch specials everyday - Convenient location on rt 34, plenty of parking - Staff was nice - We were seated promptly - Order was taken quickly and the food arrived quickly - We enjoyed the dessert (Vanilla fried ice cream) The first thing we noticed when we walked in was a strong fishy smell. It is a sushi restaurant so that could be expected but it was a bit over the top. I ordered a 3 roll lunch special, with Tuna Avocado and Spicy Tuna rolls. The presentation was lacking, and the taste was worse.. they used shredded tuna for the Tuna avocado rolls and it was the wrong texture, taste and visual. The spicy tuna roll had some other very fishy taste to it. The two other meals we got was a beef teriyaki stand-alone and one in a box. Both seemed to have been boiled.. wrong texture, very fatty and poor taste. The miso soup was ok, white rice was ok. We enjoyed the vanilla fried ice cream. If we ever come back, which is highly unlikely, it would be for that. All in all, I'm surprised they were able to stay in business all these years with such poor quality food and presentation of food. Ganga down the street is orders of magnitude better. I hope they fix these issues, we were very disappointed and I cannot recommend this place. read more

Not a bad place to eat. Food was good. But I had better. I still would try it out though, maybe I just ordered the wrong entree. Maybe the cook was having a bad day. All I know is that I give places at least two tries to give them the benefit of the doubt. My girl and I had seaweed salad, which she loved of course. It was ok for me. I ordered chicken teriyaki with white rice on the side. They always give big heaping portions. The chicken teriyaki was drenched with teriyaki sauce which I love, and had onions as well. My girl had shrimp tempura rolls which she liked. Overall it was ok. But like I said we will swing by here again next time around and give it one more shot. We ordered Yaki udon which is egg + vegetables + some chickens + soup （I don't know I should say soup or just describe to water）because it was terrible. Did they study how to make Yaki udon? We also ordered the sushi and sashami combo. I believe the fish was frozen too long or had some issues. The fish totally lost all flavor and had no taste at all. SAD. I absolutely will not go back. The food is decent. No complaints. They do have some veggie options (vegetarian dinner rolls) or the veggie yaki udon (ask for no butter, egg, etc). For the vegarian rolls, it comes with avocado cucumber roll, sweet potato roll, and the squash roll. I really love all 3 combos..this dinner is super filling too. This is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in the area. Their sushi is always fresh and delicious, my favorite is their spider rolls. Their miso soup is phenomenal. I have had a lot of miso soups from a lot of different places and Wasabi House by far has the best miso I have ever had. Their Wakame is also absolutely delicious. For every customer that dines here they give a small plate of Wakame over cucumber salad and it is the best. Once I accidentally ordered their mango salad and it is absolutely amazing. Their mango is always fresh no matter what time of year and their spicy mango is bursting with flavor. Their bento boxes are also very good, I usually get a chicken teriyaki and it is my personal favorite dish from wasabi house. For dessert my boyfriend and I always get their tempura cheesecake. It is perfectly fried and absolutely delicious. There are actually many occasions that my boyfriend and I have come to wasabi house just for dessert. The food came in pretty quickly and my friend had ordered a tempura roll and I ordered a lunch box "bento". The bento came with the usual salad and soup, however our waiter was very rude. Twice he came to our table insisting that I was finished and was going to take my plates when I haven't even touched the food. Awesome sushi and teriyaki plates. We had the black dragon roll and a tofu salmon teriyaki and it was delicious! The dragon roll is a great recommendation for those who aren't crazy about raw sushi and the teriyaki is pretty unique. I haven't had a dish like this before.
