I wrote a review about my personal experience with scheduling an appointment. I made the mistake and arrived on the wrong day. That was my fault. It took a response from the manager to get me to see my error. However, while I was waiting to be seen, I couldn't help but hear the staff openly talking about a customer who arrived late for their appointment. I understand that a healthcare office with medical staff have to keep a schedule, but to openly talk about the customer, after they've left, and around other prospective customers/pet parents, is something I'd rather not associate with. I took my dog here for many years. It was very expensive. This is the only vet my dog ever had. I thought the care was very good. When I needed to put my 14 year old dog down they couldn't squeeze us in even though we had a long relationship. I took her to some other place to be put down. They continued to send me texts asking for me to bring my dog in for a long time after she was dead. Good vets but they won't be there when you need them at the end. read more

So I've only interacted with them a few times and here is my honest review with both pros and cons. For context, I adopted my Bugg (Boston terrier Pugg mix) about 9 months ago, and his records and procedures had been done here. So it made sense to continue going here. It's about a 15 min drive for me. First appointment happened the day my dad was diagnosed with cancer so that day was a blur. I later apologized for missing the appointment and offered to pay and set up a new appointment because of an injury (I thought) which ended up being nothing really. But I'm a paranoid first time owner and love my dog to death. So for this second appointment, unfortunately I was heading in at the worst possible time for traffic and was late so I called and asked if I should reschedule. The front desk staff who I spoke to seemed annoyed and were pretty condescending which honestly I understood but they said they could fit him in and I was very grateful. After arriving, they were pretty stand off-ish. Ok, very. Acted like I was such an idiot for asking basic questions as a first time visitor in-person. Felt they were still upset I was late but also got the feeling this is how they just are in general. They were way too good at being rude for it to be a rare thing. Again; I kind of understood but at the same time...like...I offered to reschedule and pay the entire appointment fee. If you're going to tell me to come anyway, don't be rude the whole time. That's why I tried to offer what I did. Pros: it's a super clean facility, really nice building, great location, not too crowded with crazy dogs everywhere, felt calm and safe. The actual vet who called me and kept me informed about my dog's little "injury" was super nice and even though he probably thought I was an over-protective weirdo, he was very kind and thorough and gave me some good insights about my dog's other health information. Those conversations were great. Cons: Front desk staff is just not it. I'll never understand why so many dr offices or similar always have staff with such low standards for making people (and in this case their pets) feel welcome. That's literally the whole job. They were just having little gossipy banter it seemed like, very unconcerned with anyone, not making any kind of customer connection, and just rude. Everything I asked seemed like a burden. Did not feel welcome. When I came to pay, the guy at the front was just...rude. Inconsiderate. Acted like I was some low life almost because I had pet insurance credit I was using? lol. It was just so uncomfortable. Both checking in and checking out. Unfortunately it was the same guy both times who rolled his eyes at the end to the girl next to him, I mean not even trying to hide how annoyed he was with me for...I don't even know what for. For breathing? lol Overall, I liked the vet who spoke with me on the phone and wish they were the face of this clinic and not the mean girls/guy managing the front. they've worked with me to refill meds efficiently. It's a nice clean location but I'm not crazy about how you just leave your dog with them. Especially since I didn't know this was what would happen so that caught me off guard a bit. And so if your ONLY face to face interaction is with the front office staff who act like they literally don't care if you live or die lol...then it doesn't leave a great impression. At all. I honestly don't feel they WANT me or my dog there. So, it will be a pain, but I'll probably be taking him elsewhere moving forward. Oh well. Lots of potential for a great place but friendliness and not being petty and rude is increasingly rare to come by these days, so I guess 3 stars since that just the new normal now. read more

My little yorkie, Tiffany went to Washington Heights for over 10 years until she passed away in May. I trusted the vets at Washington Heights with all of her medical care over the years including annual checkups, teeth extractions, etc. I want to especially thank Dr. Hipke who helped me navigate the last weeks of Tiffany's life. Knowing that Tiffany was my first dog, Dr. Hipke made sure to check on us during those rough last few weeks. I really appreciated that especially since this was my first experience with a 15 year old dog with a severe kidney infection. I also didn't know what to expect regarding the euthanasia process but it was done in a private room with direct access to the parking lot so I didn't have to walk through the waiting area afterward. It was a very peaceful process. If I ever decide to have a pet again, I'm sure I would come back to Washington Heights for veterinary care. read more

They are very caring, straightforward and give you time. I appreciated being given the cost and options of different procedures because I can't afford $1000 surgery so easily. I asked the doctor what she would do and took her advice. I had to have a cat put down a year ago and they made it as painless as they could. They also helped me when my dog had cancer and another vet said there was nothing that could be done, she was going to die. WHVC gave her some kind of x-ray, said She needed surgery, and she had it and was fine afterwards. I had a cat who was very hyper and they took the time to figure out things that would help because nothing usual was helping. These people are great! read more

Word of warning - be sure to scrutinize your bill carefully and question any charges you feel are excessive (or you cannot afford) while you are in the office. Do not wait until you leave or you will have no recourse whatsoever. They would rather lose you as a customer, rather than refund your money for unopened and unused medications., or even offer to discount it. I have been taking my 3 dogs to Washington Heights Veterinary Clinic for the past year. Until last night, I have been very pleased - the Vet staff is wonderful, the place is really clean and the front desk staff is always cheerful and happy to see us. My problem is, I recently discovered I was being overcharged for flea, heartworm and joint meds. My vet bill for an annual checkup for my Wire Fox Terrier, refills for 2 boxes of Nexgard, and new Rx for DASUQUIN (a new joint supplement they insisted I get) came to a whopping $685.05. Being that I was in a rush to get to work, I paid the bill and figured I would sort it out later - BIG MISTAKE on my part. Upon looking at the details of my invoice later that evening, I learned they were charging $177.38 for the Nexgard XL 60-120lbs six-month supply, $162.00 for the Nexgard M 10-24lbs six-month supply, and $72.13 for the DASUQUIN. This seemed really high to me, so I did some investigating on the internet and found that you can commonly find Nexgard for $109 (XL 6-mo) and $104 (M 6-mo), and you can get the DASUQUIN for $46.99. This is a difference of $152.52. While this may not seem like a lot of money to some folks, it is a lot for me, especially having three pets. When I discovered the price difference, I went in first thing Saturday morning to return them and was told that they do not accept returns on pet medications, without approval from their in-house pharmacy manager. They explained she did not work on Saturdays and would have her contact me on Monday. She called me Monday evening around 6p and said they do not accept returns on pet medications and that it was my fault for paying for them and not questioning them when I was checking out. I tried several times to explain that these were unopened, prepackaged medicines but she did not seem to care. I asked her to please send me the records for all my dogs and that I would find a new vet, to which she thanked me and said goodbye. I have always loved taking my pet kids to the vets at WHVC. I have trusted their care and concern for my kids. Now I'm in shock. I realized this morning after trying for 2 weeks to get a prescription refilled that they were holding my kids lifesaving medication hostage because I hadn't brought him in DURING A PANDEMIC for routine care. Mind you, I am also struggling with another one of my kids nasal cancer. The advice I got for my kid with nasal cancer was to see a specialist. I booked him at the earliest possible appt at GCVS. Then Houston froze, and his appointment was canceled by the clinic. I rebooked. My kids nose hasn't stopped bleeding for 4 days. He can't breathe through his nose and chokes and gags when he eats or drinks. Doesn't want to go outside. So this morning I am asking why do they want him to see a specialist for an inoperable terminal cancer? He is suffering. He shouldn't have to endure this. My cat shouldn't have to not have his insulin because I didn't take him for his annual. They didn't even let me know this was the reason his prescription wasn't being refilled. I'm so disappointed. I followed these vets from sunset animal clinic when they opened this practice. I have never regretted that decision until today. Heartbroken. read more

Extremely high volume. Always packed. Never saw the same veterinarian twice. A ton of vet technicians, all kids, they are nice and smile but you'll never see the same one twice. My dog developed a huge tumor inside of his skin near his penis. One vet suggested it may be a testicle!? He was neutered there! I even told my fiancé that that particular dr seemed out of it and like she was on drugs. Just spaced out, life gets hard and I don't want to judge but wtf. After 3rd visit they determined it was in fact a tumor and we scheduled procedure to have it removed. Then after dropping him off for procedure I get a call saying it is too invasive and that we need to go to a specialist. I appreciate the honesty that they were not capable of performing procedure but if all they had to do was look and realize that, why did it take a month and 4 visits for someone to realize they can't handle procedure. They are slick and slyly set your animal up on a vaccination schedule. Every six months we would get a call saying he was due for vaccine. We trust our pets with Vets, but they have a business to run. They are business first. read more

This vet is great! You are greeted with a smile and a doggie treat! Dr. pilgrim is so kind and really cares about your pet. she takes time to explain everything and she even goes over the price so your not shocked at the end of the visit. They are very nurturing to my dog and I (and my baby) don't get nervous when they have to bring her back for weighting and things. The only reason it's 4 stars and not 5 is the price! Yikes! They wanted to charge me $650 to remove a baby tooth that hadn't fallen out. I love my dog more then life but come on. We went to a small town vet and they did it for $50. read more

I brought my 4 year old dog Gelato in for a check up ; he ran to the truck that day jumped in and put his head out the window in my way to the clinic. We went in , I was 30 min late so they asked me if I could just leave him and come back and pick him up ? Then around 6 pm I realized they hadn't called me and they close around that time. I called the vet to say I was on my way , when they informed me after the fact (not when it happened) but that he might not make it , I said he was just there for a check up (they said he had an "anxiety attack" and couldn't breath ... I don't believe this is all that led to him in the condition I found him when I got there. They had him on oxygen and said they close and I would have to take him to the emergency where he died . Don't leave your pets at this place , because they might not make it back home with you ... I miss my dog (companion) so much .. he was perfectly fine until I left him there for a simple check up .. he was my best friend .. I have a 6 month old kitten that I have been taking here from the very beginning. Dr. Bannigan and all the staff have been absolutely amazing. Sterling Archer was found at a park, he was a couple of days old and I was a new kitty mom, so I asked a lot of questions and worried about everything, but Dr. Bannigan was always very sweet and had no problem answering all of my questions and making me feel like Sterling was in great hands. She even calls to follow up after his visits. The front of the house staff is great as well. They like animals, like any person working at a vet should! They call to remind you of your appointments and when I ask for an estimate, they are always upfront. I recently moved to Dallas for work and had to take Sterling to a new clinic for his last rounds of shots. He's very feisty, but, from the moment we walked in, he was very uneasy and the technicians were just not gentle at all so he was very frightened and reacted very aggressively, something that I've never seen him do when I took him to Dr. Bannigan. Today I took him to a different clinic to get neutered. But I just can't shake this feeling of not knowing how well they'll treat him! So, if you are looking for a clean place with outstanding, pet loving people, and you wanna have peace of mind knowing that your pet is well taken care of, go here. I even considered bringing Sterling with me when I go back to Houston so that they could continue caring for him, but that would be very stressful for him :( read more

If your dog has diabetes do NOT use this vet!! My Charlie was a patient of theirs a few years back and we had a horrible experience. A friend recently experienced the same which has prompted me to finally write this review. They diagnosed Charlie with diabetes and started him on a very low dose of insulin. I am also a type 1 diabetic of 25 plus years so I understand diabetes better than most. I declined their recommendation of Walmart insulin and elected to put Charlie on Lantus because I know it's way better, although more expensive. I was shocked when the vet started him on only 1 unit of insulin and then didn't want to see him back for 2 weeks! Thinking they must know something I don't I went along with it. After a week of insulin Charlie was rapidly losing weight, peeing, and drinking a lot. Knowing these are signs of high blood sugar I upped his dose myself and took him back in for his follow up. His sugar was still over 300, but the vet said she wasn't increasing his dose since I had myself a week earlier and we needed to give it time to work. She wanted to see Charlie back in another 2 weeks. At this point I started feeling like she didn't have a clue what she was doing. She clearly didn't know you don't have to wait that long to titrate Lantus. All this time Charlie is losing more weight and starting to look really terrible. I increased his dose again on my own and called the vet to schedule an appointment with another one of their vets whose profile mentioned an interest in endocrinology. I should have just left this practice because that appointment was the worst appointment I've ever experience and I left in tears. She walked into the room with an attitude from the start asking me why I felt I knew better than the other vet. I told her my story and medical background so she would hopefully understand I knew what I was talking about and how I just wanted another opinion because I was scared for Charlie's life! She was very condescending and even asked me if I had gone to veterinary school because she did and she knew better. I understand I'm not a vet, but I am Charlie's only advocate and I knew he would die if I didn't do anything. After the appointment I immediately called the vet the rescue I volunteer with uses. He is amazing. He had Charlie's diabetes under control within 6 days. He immediately increased his dose upon examining Charlie and had me bring him in every 3 days for a quick blood sugar test to make adjustments. He even said that they didn't know what they were doing based on Charlie's records! He also said they ran unnecessary and invasive tests he didn't need. (They had taken urine with a needle directly from his bladder when they could have just caught it like they did every other time he had a UTI) They obviously did that test that way so they could charge more. Guess they didn't care about the pain they put my dog in. Anyways, I believe this office is completely incompetent when it comes to diabetes care. The way they treated me for even daring to question them was beyond offensive. I truly just wanted the best for my dog and I hope they read this and really self evaluate. I'm sure they are good people trying to do their best, but sometimes you need to know your limits. Just because you went to veterinary school does not mean you know everything and are right 100% of the time. You are not a god, you make mistakes, and you don't know everything all the time. Please listen to your customers and try to remember they are just trying to get the best care for their best friend. read more

We've been taking our animals to Washington Heights since we first found them when searching for a new vet for Jerry, our senior Poodle with multiple health issues. Dr. McAdoo was noted to have a special interest in some of the diseases that affect senior dogs, so we started going to her. We were very impressed by her knowledge, thoroughness and balance of management. She always explains everything and places the utmost importance on quality of life. Unfortunately, Jerry is no longer with us, but we have three poodle rescues (two with special needs) and we are still very happy with the clinic. Because of our seniors and special needs pups, we are pretty frequent flyers and have had the occasion to see most of the other docs there. We have most recently been seeing Dr. Pilgram a lot, who I can't say enough good things about. She is knowledgeable, caring and takes so much time explaining everything and discussing all the options. The techs are also really good, especially Chava (probably spelled wrong) who always remembers our pups. The front office staff is friendly, helpful and responsive, which is a great improvement over where we used to go. They are a bit pricey, but they seem rather comparable to most of the other places I've gone to. Plus I'd rather pay a bit more with them than shop around to save a few bucks. One thing that I don't care for and seems to be a trend in other clinics as well, is the practice of conducting the exam in the back. I am not a huge fan, as I like to observe, and it often times triggers something for me to ask. That is just my preference. Dr. McAdoo is a god send! I took my dog in for the first time at this clinic after a day of him being sick and the staff worked to get me in last minute. The office is super cute and the staff were all very friendly and adored my dog. I had to leave my little guy behind so they could run some tests on him. I got a call from Dr. McAdoo personally and she went over everything they did for him and the treatment options. I asked her a few questions and she took her time answering every last one of them. I truly appreciate Dr. McAdoo and her team for nourishing my baby boy back to health. They seem to really enjoy what it is they do and that's such a rare find now. The worst part - I also brought my dog for her thyroid check up and they charged me over $300.00 for the blood work, told me they would get back to me in 1-2 days, and I never heard from them again, even after calling. No results, because they probably never drew blood. I have contacted my credit card company to dispute the $500+ charge on my cc from this place. Don't go here! read more

I have been taking my puppies close to 2 years now. They are extremely knowledgeable, friendly and caring. Their equipment is top of the line and cutting edge of veterinary medicine. There are always going to be bad reviews, always, but in this case ignore them. People like to bitch about everything. If you think prices are high, why would you take them there? Why would you not call in advance to get an estimate? Wouldn't you want the best care available in town for your loved pets? Yes, country vets are less expensive but are rarely experienced with domesticated animals (I know that for a fact) unless you have a cow that lives indoors, I guess. I have never had a bad experience and my puppies love going there either for boarding, bath and even to see the vet. This is a clinic of all female doctors, each bringing to the table unique personalities. I like each Vet for different reasons and feel comfortable letting my 2 dogs under any of their care. I recently had to say goodbye to my beloved dog ( yes I had three) and over the last year of his life the vets, technicians, and front office staff guided me through tough decisions and were there with me at his passing. This is, by far, the BEST veterinary clinic I have ever been to. I found out about them through a rescue organization called Lucky Leash who has a deal set up with them to board rescue animals. They are located in the Sawyer Heights area (on Shearn St.) in the same shopping area as PetSmart, Target, Freebirds, etc. You would exit Taylor from I-10. Not only is the clinic gorgeous inside, squeaky clean, and centrally located, but they absolutely the best staff you could ask for. I know that at least one of the vets, Dr. McAdoo, came from Sunset Vet Clinic, and opened this clinic with Dr. Lynda Case. Talia at the front desk is fantastic - she knows me and my dog by name and always welcomes us with a smile. Not to mention, it is apparent that everyone there is a huge animal lover. Even though WH Vet is always busy, they are always able to fit us in, even if it's last minute. They are very accommodating to my work schedule, as well; I work 8 - 5, and if I call the day before, they will get there early so I can drop the dog off in the morning and they will stay late so I can pick him up in the evening after work. I have to admit, I occasionally turn into one of those "crazy parents" who wants to know every single thing that happens with their pet while they are at the vet, but Talia never gets annoyed with me, even if it's my 4th call of the day just "checking in". Dr. McAdoo has even called me the day after I pick up the dog to check in and make sure they are doing OK. Bottom line: if I had kids, I'd want the very best pediatrician with a helpful staff, a clean office and flexible schedule. I had a great experience at this veterinary clinic. The staff at the front desk were very nice and helpful. I did not have to wait long at all to see a doctor, which was great! Dr. Simmons was very kind and answered the many different questions I had (my cat had never been sick before so I was nervous). The only thing that I was not feeling was the prices of some of the medicine. For 1 capstar pill they charge about $13 and I have gotten it cheaper online or for $5 at BARC. I actually told them I would do that and they seemed pretty understanding. But that is not enough to deter me from making this my permanent veterinary clinic :) read more

As a first time new kitten owner, I was unsure where to take lil Pancake. Yelp never fails me so I turned to a quick search online. I was impressed with all the great reviews Washington Heights Vet Clinic got, so I decided to give it a shot. I made an initial visit appointment with Pancake and we were able to get in that very week. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. The service is excellent, and the coolest part is their online records system. After giving them my e-mail address, they sent me a link to sign up online. As soon as I logged in, all of Pancake's information was already populated with her past appointments and medical records. They even send out e-mail reminders, which is great for all the paperless tech-savvy pet owners out there. I'm very confident Pancake will always be taken care of when she visits the doctor. I've taken my old man cat, my street pit, my crazy catahoula mix, and now my adopted stray kitten to WH Vet beginning around 2012. My Chatticus Maximus was already around 14 years old when he was seen at WH Vet. He was going through slow, but sure, kidney failure and lasted for another 4 good years. We got all our medicine there and regular check-ups to help him stay as comfortable as he could during his last years. They kept me well informed of his special needs as he got older. My pittie got cancer of the lymph nodes and her end of days were harsh, but made as comfortable as possible with the humane and genuinely empathetic vets and support staff there. When I had to give her the long sleep, they were very gentle and quiet with us both. My catahouligan had a random bug fly into her ear once that lodged itself next to her eardrum. While the vet was skeptical at first when I mentioned that might be a thing that happened, they managed to get the bug out without surgery or taking her to an emergency clinic and even apologized later when they found the bug because she didn't think that had happened. I generally like the vets, the support staff, and the techs. I absolutely feel like they have the best interest of the animals at heart and haven't felt the need to get any second opinions on diagnosis, treatments, etc. I haven't had to wait around inordinately long times for appts and check out is always fairly prompt. They are usually very good at making sure you get a quote for what you are about to spend before they perform procedures etc. This is not always spot on, it is a guestimate, but they have been fairly accurate in my cases. The downside is that they are very expensive (compared to country vets and vets with less fancy equipment). They also tend to want to give the maximum number of shots and boosters, which is a subject that is apparently debated by some pet owners and vets as to the frequency necessary for such things. My biggest annoyance is that they quoted me $600 to spay the 65 lb street pit I took in and, get this, almost $500 to neuter the 5 lb male kitten I currently need snipped. I cannot afford to pay that much for (without any complications) what is basically a 15 min surgery at most for the cat neuter. I ended up taking the pitbull and will be taking my man kitten to SNAP where it will cost me a tenth as much. Wow! This place is great! I took my 1 year old pup here after searching for a new vet in the Heights area. As soon as we walked in we were greated by the friendly ladies up front. Even though it was our first time, they knew exactly who we were and were greated by name. Great service! After getting some paperwork out of the way, the tech immediately came out- no waiting! My dog is fairly skiddish (or at least she was at our old vet) but the tech was great with her! He was so patient and kind- I was totally impressed. After she came back from getting her weight and inital checkup out of the way, the tech and dr. came in to give her 2 shots. The tech kept her occupied while the dr. administered the shots. My dog has never done well with shots, or at the vet in general, and she didnt even realize she had been given a shot after the dr was done. I couldnt believe it! She used to get muzzled and would start shedding uncontrollably from stress at our previous vet. This place is fantastic with animals and knows how to handle them well. It was by far the best experience we have had at the vet. The prices are a tad higher but the service makes up for it. I dont mind paying more for great service. The inside is also beautiful and very clean. I have nothing bad to say about this vet clinic. I would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

I absolutely love this place! Fortunately I don't have to go that often.... because our dogs are healthy, thanks to Washington Heights Vets. When we do go for semi annuals and annual appointments, we are greeted with friendly receptionists that know us and our dogs by name. We usually see the lovely Dr Pilgrim as she's been there since our dogs were tiny pups but had just had to get emergency appointment and saw Dr O'Malley who was awesome! Both very thorough, personable and knowledgeable. Cannot praise Washington heights vet and all their staff enough. Wonderful. Trust them with our dogs entirely.
