Been coming to this center for toddler's swimming lessons last 3 quarters. The facilities are great, I love how warm the kids pool is compared to the Long Bridge Aquatic center - me and toddler were shivering in the Long Bridge pool. The instructors for the APS swim classes really hit or miss compared to the county classes. We loved the first lady instructor, she always started classes on time and ended on time, knew what she wanted to do in the class, and had her songs with swimming movements ready. Last 2 sessions were with a gentleman instructor (who says he's been teaching swimming at APS for 15+ years) as the main instructor and recently he's been training this other lady and it's been so bad: 1. classes don't start on time half the time (one time started going around checking the kids in at the time class was supposed to start and that took 10 minutes, another time it's already time to start the class but instructor was standing around chatting for 5 minutes) and sometimes runs out of things to do class ended 5 min early 2. runs out of things to do in the class or don't know what songs to sing as we practice swimming movements and they start singing random songs or ask all the parents what song would you like to sing !!?? Could you do a little bit of prep beforehand or bring a cheatsheet into the pool so you know what to do next. Maybe it's the toddler class that's bad because kids are young... won't be doing the toddler class again here unless we get the first instructor back. Will wait for the class for older kids or go to county classes. read more

A wonderful mixed-use community pool that is well-maintained and skillfully managed. The team here is awesome and make it a great place to workout or enjoy a leisurely swim. They firmly prioritize safety and cleanliness, but do so while also creating a friendly, fun atmosphere. The managers/adult staff especially do a masterful job balancing the differing needs of people in the community here. While it's clearly a kid-friendly space, they don't hesitate to kindly but proactively step in if a kid (or self-absorbed parent) starts to overrun or disrupt lap swimmers, water walkers, elders exercising, etc. One thing to watch when planning your swim. When checking the pool schedule, be sure to check the link at the top to check what times there are classes. Lots of lanes and parts of the pool may be unavailable but it took me some time to figure out where to find that info. The staff here are super helpful in figuring that out through. read more

True Life: I used to be a diver. Not like, a scuba diver but a competitive springboard diver and coach. It's been years since it once consumed me in what feels like now, a past life, but I still get cravings to just go and dive for a few hours. Since I grew up diving in Montgomery County, MD I knew where all the boards were there - both indoor and outdoor. But since moving to DC I never had really taken the time to find one closer to me. What I learned, is that there are lots of indoor pools in and around DC. What I also learned is that most of them do not have diving boards, which is what brought me to Washington Lee pool. First, I loved the location. Just 15 mins away from where I live in DC with plenty of parking. Admission was $8 and I was also pretty happy to see they closed at 7:30pm on Sundays. (Many of the other pools I found closed at 5pm on Sundays.) The staff here are super nice, and were willing to answer all of my questions and help me with anything I needed. There are plenty of lap lanes, although I learned that on Sundays, Master swimming takes place and dominates six of the main lanes. Luckily, there was a smaller group today, so I was able to still score one of the six lanes. The facility is super clean, and the environment is pretty laid back. You won't find huge, waterfall mushrooms and water slides here (which I like) but you will find a fun facility to swim and splash in. Only thing that was a bummer for me, was that they do not have specific hours when the diving well is reserved. I pretty much came here to dive, but there was a man doing underwater jogging, and a few others swimming laps in the diving well. I pretty much had to wait until everyone cleared out just to get some dives in. Since I anticipated that this could happen, I also brought my goggles and swim cap to swim laps while I waited. Overall, this is a great facility and I'll be sure to return in the future. read more

Yay for Washington-Lee pool, I'm a big fan. You've got to be tolerant of kids if you want a good experience here, because spa-like zen is out of the question at a community-use high-school pool facility like this. So, have a quiet chuckle that someone is screaming that she can't get her pants off in the locker room, or expect to find a little boy who thinks its cool to squeeze himself inside a locker and hide. This is de-rigeur here. The kids are in a separate pool which is where swim classes are held. They aren't in the main lap zone. Over time I've found there are times which are quieter with fewer kids in the locker rooms (the later it gets in the evening, or after 4:00 p.m. at the weekends). There is also the older crowd who come for water aerobics group classes who are a different pace altogether. They too stay in the separate diving pool, not the main lap zone. I enjoy the raucous setting, because the pool itself is beautifully maintained and I'm happy for the zen I find whilst doing laps. There is also swim equipment (kick boards/floats etc.) to practice kicks and strokes available in big bins for you to use for free. The zany staff out front will charge you $6 as an Arlington resident and advise you which lanes are available for laps. There is a huge range of open-hours for lap swimming, (lanes 1 - 7) starting at 5:30 a.m. I tried Masters swimming but I found it a little too intense, so I'm just chilling with my own pace these days. Seriously, way too crowded always; unsupervised children; outside groups get preference for lane space over Arlington resident members; management is most often one of two surly stoned looking college kids. The pool itself is really nice. The staff are...alright. Nothing special, but they do a decent job. My main two complaints are the locker room and the temperature. The locker room is not very clean and is ridiculously, ridiculously cold. Same story with the awkward little passageway connecting the locker rooms to the pool itself. For years, I had known about Washington-Lee's pool and vowed to get back into swimming, but never did. Shortly after I completed my first online boot camp and lost over 70 lbs., I was trying to find some other creative methods to keep it off, as alternatives to a gym workout. For one reason - to keep things "shaken up" and interesting, and also because weight training was really starting to aggravate a lot of old injuries (not to mention creating new ones.) Going to the pool is a cheap and wonderful way to get your exercise in a low-impact environment. A 20 session swim pass is only $64 for Arlington residents, (but do it in cash if you can...it takes FOREVER for checks to clear through the Arlington County financial system.) The hours vary according to the time of year. It's much busier in the fall, and therefore the public swim times are much more limited - If I recall correctly: 5 to 8:30 a.m., Noon to 1:30 p.m. and then 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday, with some extended hours on the weekends. Be sure to call for schedule times. Just one thing, though, and here's where it loses a star. Sometimes it used to be easy to get a lane to yourself, which I love. I don't mind sharing at all with one other person...the lanes are plenty wide, with enough room for two people to swim laps comfortably. Three is kind of pushing it. Four people to a lane? I am not a team swimmer by any definition, so no, I'm not used to that and I won't even get into the pool if every lane has three to four people in it. (Bad memories of a childhood accident in a pool. Long story.) Anyway, by the time I moved away from Arlington, it was getting harder and harder to get in, because of what I've come to call the "Michael Phelps" effect. Prior to the Beijing Games, there were quite a few people swimming, but the crowds weren't so bad that you couldn't get some time in. (Best time was always lunchtime, especially if you get there just before noon.) Now, after Michael's record-setting performances? Just try getting there late - I DARE you. There is no freakin' way you will ever get in, unless you like practicing your strokes in the Tank (aka the 'kiddie' pool.) Besides, I could be wrong, but I think the rules only allow for three swimmers max in any lane at any time, fast, medium or slow. I do miss going there, and try to get some time in whenever doctor's visits or some other business brings me back to Arlington. But I am really looking forward to the new facility when it opens (some have predicted it will be ready by fall of 2009.) read more

I am a newbie to running...and felt like a track would help me pace myself and keep more accurate times on my mile. So I trecked up to Washington Lee and I am so happy to have found this track to train at. I was a little nervous being an overweight run/walker but the atmosphere is pleasant and the other runners are just their to run, not judge you. So I felt comfortable to run at my own pace and walk when I needed to. The track is in fantastic shape and is lit very well. The pleasant smell of the trees is a bonus! It actually surprises me that more High School tracks are not open to the public, I feel that with Mrs. Obama's campaign to prevent childhood obesity it would be a good idea to work with schools and promote opening their tracks like this. read more

Seriously this is a public school facility?! I jump into this pool and I feel like I'm about to beat some evil Russians to claim USA's dominance in all aquatic sports at the Olympics. To say that this pool is nice I think is an understatement, there are 10 lanes continuously at this pool, and even when a few are taken over by Grandma's aqua-cise class, there is still enough room for me to get my paddle on. The water is clean, the decks are open so it never feels crowded, and there are so many windows and sunroofs that on sunny days it almost feels like you are swimming outside. I love this pool. I only wish that sometimes they would change the lanes so we could swim it like it was a 50m pool. That would be heaven. read more

I think the reviews of this pool are pretty spot on (including the negative one re the crowds -- it *is* popular!). What I wanted to add to the others is that this pool is great for those who have fitness "issues." I'm a plus-sized gal with a bum knee, and had been avoiding checking this pool out because I was not looking forward to the prospect of having to haul myself out on one of those ladders. There are two pools at WL. The much smaller one is an instructional pool. It has a ramp down the long side and on the short side, there are steps with rails -- and on one side, there are double rails shoulder width apart. In the larger pool, there are also steps right off the diving area. So you can either just splash and/or walk around in the small pool or swim laps or tread water in the larger pool and get in and out easily! The locker rooms seem small given the size of the pool (and the crowds often there for classes), but there seem to be plenty of lockers. I found the water warm, but your mileage may vary. From my perspective easily the best of Arlington's three pools. Huge pool with easy parking (not so at Yorktown) that isn't a football field away (like at Wakefield). read more

I have two scars on my knees (one on each knee) from falling in middle school while running my daily laps in P.E. (Each scar came from a separate occasion) Memories of all those rocks going in my skin, and having lots of pus and blood come from under my skin means 10 years later, I am still very hesitant (scared really) to run on pavement except for two seconds when running after a bus. This is still quite rare, as I always make sure to arrive super early to a bus stop to avoid this. I'm also scared of a treadmill. I'm the girl that pauses before she gets on an escalator. When you refuse to run on the sidewalks and on a treadmill, but want to take advantage of beautiful winter weather by running outside, where do you go? A high school track! Here the only hazard I have to worry about is the potential to get hit by a soccer ball coming from the field. I'll take a bruise on the body/face over blood and pus any day. I take the bus for 30 minutes every other day just to get to this location. Everyone always asks me why I just don't run around the block or on a trail. My response is always the story above. Excellent track and field facility that is open to the public (so long as there are no high school events at the time). I was surprised by the lackluster reviews, then realized that they were all commenting on the old facilities -- construction has now been completed (and the building/grounds look great). Saffety - I have found that they keep the wonderful, extremely bright lights on until somewhere around 10 pm, although I have never figured out the exact time they go out because it seems to change. People who work out on the track/field are extremely courteous and just go about their workout without bothering anyone. When there is a high school game, there is a police officer that hangs out there, which I suspect deters potential criminals even when not there... plus the neighborhood is a good one already. There are pretty much always plenty of people around when you're working out. Facility - a big multi-lane track that circles around an artificial turf field (soccer, lacrosse, football). Not much to say about the track really, it's pretty much like other tracks out there. There is stadium seating for someone who wants to run stairs. Bathrooms and water fountain, although I have never used either. There is a pull-up bar. Also at W-L high school is a brand-new indoor Arlington County pool (enormous, sparkling clean, wonderful for laps, has a shallower section for kids and new adult swimmers - the old pool was fine for me, but this is wonderful and decadent), which might be worth knowing for training triathletes. Use - open to the public through Arlington County; high school sports; rec leagues (I often see rec adult soccer out there playing games). You can just walk on, no need to prove Arlington address or anything. Parking - plentiful, at least when I go (late in the evening). You can usually find something right by the entrance, but if not you can definitely find it in the huge parking lot in the back of the school. read more

This pool rocks! I've been swimming at Washington & Lee for the last 10 years or so. With the opening of the new pool it's definitely been stepped up a few notches. It's grown from a decrepit 6 lane pool with ceiling tiles falling on your head to a 10 lane thoroughly modern facility. The good parts: a modern pool with wide lanes, decent depth (mostly 6.5'+) good lane lines, low chlorine ppm, separate tank, decent locker rooms, 4 family changing rooms, 2 one meter boards, inexpensive admission and decent spectator seating. The bad parts: as mentioned before this is really popular and often crowded. The pace clocks are not always easy to read and are not in synch. No suit dryer (a must for multi-week swims). A weird bulkhead placement (much closer to lane 6 than lane 7 leading to bloody knuckles). Temps do fluctuate a bit and tend toward the warm side. Mostly small nits--this pool is a great facility and truly amazing for a public high school (and only a few blocks from home!). Teams, sometimes weird hours and type-A swimmers/triathletes can make it a challenge sometimes, but overall a really nice place to swim. read more

I generally like to live out my former track and field high school days at the Washington & Lee High School track, late at night... when no one can see me huff and puff after 200 meters. The track itself is awesome- it's in great shape (ie: still has all the rubber cushiony pellets on the track and the numbers are still visible in the lanes). There are bleachers as well if you want to add a glute workout but the bleachers aren't that tall. The field is also well-maintained. Every time I've been there, there have either been ultimate frisbee teams or soccer teams using the field space. If no one else is there, it's up for grabs. They keep the lights on fairly late (I've been there as late as 10:30pm) so night own runners, rejoice! Just a heads up, the bathrooms were a bit dingy (there was no soap, no paper towels and out of the 4 stalls ran out of toilet paper) and you can't run around the track when there are school events going on. read more

So awesome, they have A fantastic baby/kid pool that my 22 month old son had a blast in. There are at least three water slides, they have buckets that spill water at unexpected times, fountains that shoot water up, and a wading pool. I was pleased with the life guards and they were young but extremely attentive and not distracted. I felt safe with them while I was with my son. The showers and locker rooms were clean, just the basics. Would have been nice to have plastic bags to put wet suits in. Wasn't too much to be a guest from my mom, who has a membership there. The actual lap pool was huge, lots of open space. Was not intimidating at all, as ppl were not waiting for lanes and there was no reason to share a lane. I definitely recommend​ this spot for swimming. They have a swimming school that I'm planning to attend w my 22 month old. read more

This is a great track where I go to run my sprints. There's also a nice set of bleachers that you can run up and down for a good exercise. Along that side against a wall is a pull-up bar. The field is 100 yds long and has designated markings just as a football field should. Though the grass is artificial turf, it's a nice surface for doing sprints and other exercises. The lights go out around or after 10pm on weeknights. I recommend getting here early at the crack of dawn for best access. During the school year the field is often reserved for high school games of myriad sports. So even at night it can be busy for that reason. read more

I really like this track. It's nice, convenient, the hours are great, and it's well lit at night. You do have to check the online schedule to make sure it's not closed for games, otherwise you might show up and not be able to use it (and yes, I speak from experience). I do have a few issues, but they are purely with the people who use the track and not the track itself. First is that people (I suspect primarily WS Lee students) do not pick up after themselves and leave behind food remnants, plates, soda bottles, etc. Not only is this unsightly, but it draws vermin. Specifically rats. Large rats. Very large rats. I also feel like many of the runners tend to "take over" the track. Many are part of a running club; so, arrive and run in packs. I don't have a problem with this, but what bothers me is that when they're not running, they stand around taking up 3/4 of the lanes and don't move for others trying to use the track. They clearly see other people attempting to run or walk and yet, are incapable of moving an inch. I just think this is inconsiderate. There is plenty of space for them to stand to the side (and off) of the track, but apparently that is asking too much. read more

I have been going to Washington & Lee High School for water aerobics classes for about two years. Here is my list of pros and cons for both the new facility and the class I take: Pros: Brand spankin' new, clean facility. The showers in the new facility aren't group style (as they were in the old building), so there's a sense of privacy in the locker rooms (it was a bit traumatizing before to take showers en masse with elderly women). Barbara is the best water aerobics instructor EVER and really pushes students to give it their all in class. She even bought us all water aerobics t-shirts out of the kindness of her heart; she's definitely very passionate about what she does and it shows. Plus there are lots of friendly ladies who attend the water aerobics classes--and believe it or not they're not all elderly--and I've made some friends there, both young and old. Classes are reasonably priced, and when they have to cancel a class they make an effort to provide a make-up session. Cons: 9 out of 10 times, the water is fa-riggin cold (it takes me like 5 minutes to get into the pool, but I'm wimpy like that). Water aerobics classes tend to be crowded, and it makes it harder to get a good workout when you're afraid of kicking someone. (I accidentally kicked an older lady's toe one time and injured her--oopsie!) The walk from the pool to the locker room is super cold, it's like being in the Arctic which is rather unpleasant. The dryers in the locker rooms are on a sensor, so when I try to dry my hair I keep having to fidgit with the dryer to turn it back on again (and again and again). As an aside, I really prefer the kind where you just push a button and the dryer turns on for a few minutes without stopping. Also, although I've prepaid to take the course many times, several times when the season first starts I've tried to get my punch card and the folks at the front desk don't have it (grrr!). They could also do a better job of warning folks when classes are cancelled. All in all, though, these cons are just minor irritations that I've adjusted to without much of a problem. Overall I enjoy the facility and the water aerobics classes with Barbara are excellent. I'm hesitant to recommend this to others because I really do not want the classes to become even more crowded, but I definitely give both the facility and Barbara two thumbs up. read more

I am trying to mix up my exercise routine because just running and cycling is KILLING my knees. Swimming is a great workout with no impact so I thought I'd give that a try. This pool is right down the street from my house and while it is by no means fancy, it is pretty cheap ($64 for a 20 session pass or $4 for single session) and it is close. The pool is open for lap swimming in the morning 5:30 -8:30 AM and then from 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM. I have been going in the early afternoon and it is pretty quite (except when there are summer camps there). read more

The place has a great pool and individual showers, which is a plus (some facilities still have huge group showers, which I do not think are very sanitary). I only gave it four stars because I do not live in Arlington and it is very pricey for me to go there. It was $7.75 per visit for non-Arlington residents the last time I went. Parking is usually available if you are not there at the same time as an event at the school with a building in the same parking lot. Otherwise, expect to park on the street, or around back (around back of the school's building is still free parking because it's part of the school/pool parking). It's a really nice pool. Just too expensive for a non-resident. I stick with my Alexandria pools mostly from now on. read more

I have gone here for swimming laps personally and also to give lessons to the little boy that I nanny. They have an awesome "childrens" area in the pool that goes to about 4 feet deep and they have lots of equipment to teach someone how to swim or give yourself a good workout. Occasionally, the water will be on under water which is nice while your swimming! The staff that works there is very nice and the bathrooms are almost always clean. My only complaint is that it is a little expensive compared to other pools that I have gone to. read more

This pool is a huge improvement over the last pool. For a high school, it's one of the better facilities that I've seen. Comparing to a public facility, however, which Arlington really doesn't have, it falls a bit short. Conveinence in location is great. adaquate parking. I've only been going for a few weeks, and I can generally find people to swim with, without too much trouble. If you must have a lane with only two people in it to be able to feel like you can do anything good, then it will be crowded for you. Good water depth, and temperatures are slightly warm for fast swimming, but a good compromise for strong swimmers and the aqua-aerobics who generally need warmer temps. Good seperate kiddie pool which keeps kids out of the lap lanes! Things that they could imrpove. prices are pretty high. Almost $5 for Arlington residents, and $10 for non-residents. Wish they had a guest fee. DC pools are only $4 for non-residents. So if you had the time, going up to wilson high school in tenley town is a much better deal, and that's a high school pool too (indoor olympic size?!) The locker rooms at W+L could use some serious work though. the floors don't drain well, and it consistently smells bad. They look nice, but it's really kind of gross in there. One last improvement could be that the guards wouldn't try to enforce rules that don't make any sense. you'll see if you go. There are a handful of rules that are inane. Overall, a signficant step in the right direction, but falls short of taking the advantage of the opportunity that they had to be a great facility. I give it average marks. read more

The review is more for families. If you're going to the pool with a child you will have a very different experience than if you go alone or with another adult. The near all teenage staff that monitor the children's pool are inconsistently very militant about enforcing the rules. I've watched them not even pay attention if they were chatting with another staff member and I've watched the lifeguards be downright mean and take away pool toys and scold some children but not others. Who knew there were so many angry and mean teens working at this pool. Also, if you go for open swim, find out ahead of time if there are lessons going on. What has been very, very frustrating is that the pool gets sectioned off and you'll be left with a 1/4 of the pool which is imo, not worth it. About the adult swim...I've done the lap swim and am a slow to medium swimmer. When the fast lanes get more than 3 people in them those fast lane people will fill the slow lanes and that gets frustrating for a slower swimmer who is in the proper lane. read more

Definitely a convenient location. The hours are a little hard to work in if you don't work a typical 9-5 (e.g. pool is often closed for an hour in the middle of the morning making a later morning swim difficult. The water is pretty warm making it difficult to stay cool during harder sets. Better pace clocks would be nice, but it's much nicer than my high school pool was :-) read more

As one poster said. It's good for a school pool, but not as a public pool. Arlington needs a public, non-school pool for swim quality. I was surprised how dingy and dirty the facility felt given all the positive reviews. In particular the changing rooms are awful. You need to have slip on shoes or you have a distinct 'ick' feeling. But then I saw the dates. These reviews seem to be from when the pool initially opened. So it's probably gone a bit down hill since then. Also the pools are frigidly cold. On the plus side, there is lots of lap lanes, but you need to know the dates of the master swim class, as this is not in the online schedule.
