True Life: I used to be a diver. Not like, a scuba diver but a competitive springboard diver and coach. It's been years since it once consumed me in what feels like now, a past life, but I still get cravings to just go and dive for a few hours. Since I grew up diving in Montgomery County, MD I knew where all the boards were there - both indoor and outdoor. But since moving to DC I never had really taken the time to find one closer to me. What I learned, is that there are lots of indoor pools in and around DC. What I also learned is that most of them do not have diving boards, which is what brought me to Washington Lee pool. First, I loved the location. Just 15 mins away from where I live in DC with plenty of parking. Admission was $8 and I was also pretty happy to see they closed at 7:30pm on Sundays. (Many of the other pools I found closed at 5pm on Sundays.) The staff here are super nice, and were willing to answer all of my questions and help me with anything I needed. There are plenty of lap lanes, although I learned that on Sundays, Master swimming takes place and dominates six of the main lanes. Luckily, there was a smaller group today, so I was able to still score one of the six lanes. The facility is super clean, and the environment is pretty laid back. You won't find huge, waterfall mushrooms and water slides here (which I like) but you will find a fun facility to swim and splash in. Only thing that was a bummer for me, was that they do not have specific hours when the diving well is reserved. I pretty much came here to dive, but there was a man doing underwater jogging, and a few others swimming laps in the diving well. I pretty much had to wait until everyone cleared out just to get some dives in. Since I anticipated that this could happen, I also brought my goggles and swim cap to swim laps while I waited. Overall, this is a great facility and I'll be sure to return in the future.

Yay for Washington-Lee pool, I'm a big fan. You've got to be tolerant of kids if you want a good experience here, because spa-like zen is out of the question at a community-use high-school pool facility like this. So, have a quiet chuckle that someone is screaming that she can't get her pants off in the locker room, or expect to find a little boy who thinks its cool to squeeze himself inside a locker and hide. This is de-rigeur here. The kids are in a separate pool which is where swim classes are held. They aren't in the main lap zone. Over time I've found there are times which are quieter with fewer kids in the locker rooms (the later it gets in the evening, or after 4:00 p.m. at the weekends). There is also the older crowd who come for water aerobics group classes who are a different pace altogether. They too stay in the separate diving pool, not the main lap zone. I enjoy the raucous setting, because the pool itself is beautifully maintained and I'm happy for the zen I find whilst doing laps. There is also swim equipment (kick boards/floats etc.) to practice kicks and strokes available in big bins for you to use for free. The zany staff out front will charge you $6 as an Arlington resident and advise you which lanes are available for laps. There is a huge range of open-hours for lap swimming, (lanes 1 - 7) starting at 5:30 a.m. I tried Masters swimming but I found it a little too intense, so I'm just chilling with my own pace these days. Masters swimming reserves exclusive use of lanes after 8:30 p.m. barring a few lanes.

Great track! Going to be even better-- but it's closed for the summer, as they'll be resurfacing until the first week in August.

Looks like a great pool unfortunately it's an indoor pool. If you are longing for the sun this is not the place to go.

I took his "treading water" clinic and in 10 minutes, I was treading water effortlessly; something I've struggled doing for years and even after taking numerous lessons with private instructors (not affiliated with SwimBox). He's taught for 22+ years! and it shows. He simply knows how to coach all the minute details in swimming mechanics. I've always 'm someone with a high muscle to fat ratio and have ALWAYS sank like a rock. He taught me 3 styles to use my hands to tread and 4 styles using my feet. He demonstrated things in the water (such as corkscrews) that I've never seen/heard of before. He's very friendly and personable as well. I've taken the swim analysis and it was super helpful/beneficial. Looking forward to signing up for more classes! Highly recommend!

Basically, vacation-style swimming where you jump off a boat, tread for a bit, and swim back to the boat. I asked if I could learn this at SwimBox. I was told I could. If they don't teach this, they should have said so. Instead, I took 10 classes and was never taught either of these things. The instructor, as usual, wasted time in the beginning treating me like I'm afraid of water. I can already swim underwater and on my back (not expertly, of course). Instructors should start off with new swimmers by allowing them to show what they can already do vs. starting them with blowing bubbles and floating. At SwimBox, they have no incentive to move you along quickly since dragging out the lessons equals more classes, which equals more money for them. I gave the instructor the benefit of the doubt that she was teaching me some basic things I needed to know. However, as the classes went along, I noticed we were headed towards what I feared -- teaching me freestyle swimming and perfecting my form. This IS NOT what I asked to learn! I don't plan to swim laps or join the Olympics. When I clarified again that I wanted to learn to swim with my head above water, she dismissed that type of swimming as not real swimming. Well, that's how people swim socially and that's what I asked, upfront, to learn. Finally, I was lied to when I was told we would work on treading water, which is the MAIN THING that I wanted to learn. The pools are, obviously, not deep, but I was duped into believing I would still be taught. Each time I take swim lessons, they teach what they want to teach. I will just have to get a friend to teach me because formal instructors are apparently hard wired to teach every new swimmer freestyle. I wasted my money.

Kudos to Sunsational Swim School!…read more It is believed that the average adult swim novice learns how to swim in about 20 hours or less. With Sunsational, if you have an instructor like Horace, you will learn to swim in record time--- using the proper techniques. Upon our initial introduction, Horace made me feel comfortable in the water, and he was encouraging. My goal was to learn how to side breathe properly, keep legs from dragging, and to produce high elbows for a strong stroke. In short, I was "a mess in the water". With Horace, once he noticed that I had performed one task sufficiently, he quickly introduced another helpful skill so that I could piece together the whole swim rhythm. This kept me constantly learning while perfecting the swim. Once swimming the front crawl correctly was performed, Horace taught me quite a few exercises to help me solidify all that was achieved! How cool! I certainly recommend Sunsational Swim School for adult swim lessons, and if you are lucky enough to be taught by a patient pro like Horace, what a fantastic bonus!!

The Aqua tots class has made her feel comfortable about the pool and helped her submerge into the water naturally. I highly recommend Coach Kya. We had other coaches before her and we found ourselves confused and we just followed what other parents were doing in each move. Coach Kya was the first one to tell us we were doing it wrong and patiently guided us to execute the steps correctly. The facility is new and clean.
