I was typically the only student who came in-person since most students take the class remote, but being able to be in the same room as the instructor helped my motivation during class immensely. Rhya and Nicky are both so kind and knowledgeable. You can tell that they are not only experts in the language (as native speakers from the Philippines) but in pedagogy. As a community college professor myself, I admire how organized the class was and how welcoming they are. The other students in my recent class were highly motivated and excited to learn Tagalog for various reasons. Some like me grew up with Filipino parents but never learned Tagalog, while others are in relationships with Filipinos/Filipino Americans and want to engage more deeply with the community through language. Overall, SJLC has been a positive experience, and I am excited to take the next (and last) level of Tagalog 3. The current rates for Tagalog (7 weeks, weekly meeting for small group) is $399 remote, $419 in person, and $449 hybrid -- note: this is a "Prime" class, so it is priced a bit higher since the instructor is a native speaker with 5+ years of teaching experience).

I signed up for Cantonese 1, it's a 7 week, 1.5 hour hybrid class, and I went in person. I had another classmate in person, and two who joined online. I really enjoyed our classes, getting to practice speaking with the instructor and my classmates. The lessons are packed with a lot of vocabulary, grammar structure, and conversational phrases. There is limited writing exercises, and not much reading learning, but I am okay with this, and perhaps it is more emphasized in later levels. The instructor Dolphin is very supportive and patient. She would bring in photos and props to class to help us learn. She would also would tell anecdotes about Cantonese media that we could check out in our free time. I highly believe that this is worth the investment, it is more interactive than language learning apps, and you get real feedback. I am able to talk to my mother and some friends, and they can actually understand what I am trying to get across. I am planning to take Cantonese 2, and would suggest anyone who is interested in learning Cantonese, to check out this school!

It could reach 100 at some highly competitive universities. But I want to emphasize the importance of your self-practice also. You need to use it in some way even though there is no homework or an assignment. Your self-practice is important for you not to forget what you have learned. Another special thing about the school is the devotion that all instructors have to their students. They are willing to help you as long as you need their assistance. You can ask them to write recommendation letters, or ask them about other tests that you cannot study at CalCC. I studied GRE myself at the same time I took English classes at CalCC. I can say that all the help from knowledgeable instructors had helped me get high enough score on GRE examination to get admission into my MBA. Obviously, the program itself and the constant assistance from instructors provide you more than enough English competency to survive and succeed in higher education environment. Last, the school offers affordability and friendly environment. Tuition is relatively competitive I can say. The class is friendly and interactive. There is a kitchen for you to cook occasionally, but you will need dean's permission for it. Environment at Homestead High is also nice. Overall a great experience for kids and parents.

We had heard great reviews from this school from friends, but it wasn't until we had our child here that we found out the benefits of a small school! The teachers get to know the students very well and can identify individual strengths and weaknesses. Then they are able to customize the program to fit each child. For example, my child's verbal skills are strong and is able to converse in both English and Mandarin. So they started working on recognizing simple Chinese characters already! They make the lesson fun with pictures so that she is engaged and is interested in learning. So far, we've seen our child improve in both languages. It may not seem like 3 hour a day is enough for many activities, but during our parent-teacher conference, we realized that the day is actually filled with many purposeful games and lessons. Originally, we were not sure about a home-based preschool because of lack of facilities. But what we've discovered is that the most important thing for a great program is the teachers! Without great teachers, who cares if there is a brand new playground or new classroom. I'm very happy that we chose Enlighten!

So be aware they make mistakes. They are very good at hiding costs, fees and there are many unreasonable fees. They will have thousands of excuses not to refund you. If you are late to pick up, they also charged unreasonably. They have the most expensive registration and many other useless fees. They don't care about customer satisfaction. They neglect parents' complaints. The only thing they care about is money. Little kids are dangerous. One time, my daughter got a big bump on her head. I asked the teacher what happened. Both two teachers didn't know what happened at all. The playground is small and boring. The way they taught Chinese syllabus or characters was not practical and useless because learned through hardcore memorization. there are no comprehension and understanding of the meanings of the words. It is not practical at all. Kids end up learning nothing. So regret to send kids there. Don't fall into the scam in the beginning.

Most Chinese schools are teaching mandarine and simplified Chinese characters; I don't against using it, but as a Hongkonger, we grew up using Cantonese and Traditional Chinese, we can better teach our kids using the same language, and we think Cantonese and Traditional Chinese are harder to learn, kids can always be able to learn the mandarine and simplified Chinese when they grown up, provided that they have a good foundation of Chinese culture and understanding of Chinese. as a result, we go to this school, west valley Chinese school. The class schedule is every Friday night, 2hr each, we can still have Sat to do something else, it's a good fit for us. The most important part is the teaching programme, which can continue his Chinese education without much difficulties on starting, which make everything easier for parents to send their kids to school. My son had been there for two years, we are really enjoying the learning environments, making friends who're speaking the same language with us, and a lot of activities that can enhance the ability of my son (and us) to use Chinese. I am really glad that the teachers there are very professional and teaching with heart; As an example, my son was having a read-a-loud competition, and the teacher were using her spare time to do extra training with him, for two months before the class; We are talking to the teacher almost everytime after class, learnt the difficulties of teaching kids the Chinese in the US, and got a lot of advice from the teacher on how can we do better, and also share the techniques to communicate with kids. This review is long overdue!…read more My son went to Tulip from age 2.5 to 3.5, and although as a pandemic baby and a naturally sensitive kid he had a very rough transition, this was in no way the fault of his teachers, who were very warm and patient. He started off in the junior class before transitioning to pre-K, and I liked the teachers for both! The front desk (Ms. Celina, so sweet!) and all his teachers were consistently kind and had such great activities for the kids; they celebrated different cultures and had themes for each week, and also periodically assessed his skills to see if he knew his numbers, letters, shapes etc. He went already potty trained (though accidents happened), but the Junior class teachers were always patient and kind and I would 100% trust them to potty train a kid themselves. As for the Pre-K class, one of the teachers filmed my son singing "You Are My Sunshine" and sent it to us and it remains one of my greatest parenting treasures. Thank you so much for that, guys! And DID I MENTION....they FEED YOUR KID!! Having since moved to a school where I have to pack lunch and three snacks a day, let me just say, I MISS THOSE DAYS when we could roll out of bed and go straight downstairs without even worrying about breakfast!! The food was healthy too. Could have wished for a two week rotation just for more variety, but gosh, what a blessing not to have to constantly prepare and pack and wash etc. I wish the school had more space for kids to run around, and it would be great if there were academics other than worksheets, but on the whole I think Tulip does a great job managing a lot of kids in a relatively small space and preparing them for kindergarten. I spoke up & told the worker she shouldn't yell at her because she's so little. To which she walked away & since there is fencing and I was on my way to work there was little else I could do. I believe there's ways to approach children regardless of wrong doing, you could kneel down & speak to them at their level if someone spoke in this way to my child I would be angry, it was seriously upsetting to witness. Do better regardless if you're being watched or not
