My review for the experience itself is 4 stars as the owner and staff were very professional and transparent of the pricing and whole process of renting a Polaris Slingshot. But only complaint or should I say concern is I'm not sure how well maintained the Slingshot rentals are. I've never driven one before, so it's very possible that what I experienced driving is just how they drive, but to me a few things stood out. - slow acceleration; needed to really push the pedal to accelerate past 25/30 MPH. Luckily most of Newport is 25 MPH speed limit, so it's not like there is much of a need to go fast anyway - BRAKES; again this I think is more just a slingshot thing...might have nothing to do with maintenance. But as someone who never drove one before, I was very surprised at how bad the brakes were. The vehicle decelerates pretty rapidly when you let of the gas, BUT you also have to anticipate and ensure you have enough distance to brake and safely come to a stop. I still had a ton of fun and amazing time cruising around the city and taking in the sites. It was very fun to drive down toward the Cliff Walks. read more

Coming into this, I was skeptical by the rude service comments online, but can safely wave it off as the workers there were nothing but professional and kind. One even suggested an amazing free beach spot for us to check out. It was $55 for your first hour on a Scoot Coupe, with the driver required to wear sunglasses. If you didn't have, they offer $2 sunglasses to keep. Helmets were free to use. A driver license is required for the driver. I thought driving the vehicle would feel like a toy car with an actual wheel and a pedal, but instead, it was more like a motorcycle. You crank the handle to go. The feeling of cruising fast alongside the waterside is unmatched. We followed Ocean Drive, and was able to park, get out, and take in the coast views. If you needed to reverse, someone has to get up and start pushing the car while you turn your wheel. Tons of other people were renting at Scooter World too, so it was fun to beep at each other as a mutual greeting! You return your equipment next door to where you order from. We walked right up, filled out a little paperwork, handed my card as a hold in case I ran of with their scout coupe, and walked out to jump in our ride. The girl at the counter was sweet and personable. She added a few minutes to our time to allow for getting my driving tutorial. What a fun way to tour Newport. We had plenty of time to ride around and sightsee. I set my timer to let us know when to head back as not to be charged any extra time. I've been to Scooter World twice, now. My first time was 5 years ago when we rented one of the mini coupe cars. This time around was for the Polaris Slingshot. Yesterday afternoon, my fiancé and I went to Scooter World to rent the slingshot at around 4:30pm. I had previously called to make a reservation for 7pm and the lady who answered told me that I didn't need a reservation for that time. We ended up having extra time and showed up earlier than when I called for. When we stepped into the shop, we were shouted at "sorry! We're closed" by a bunch of teenagers just hanging out in the shop. I looked at them and asked, "closed? It says you close at 9." They gave me excuses that they close at 7 and they need the cars back at 6. Again, I looked at my watch and questioned this. I only wanted an hour and that was plenty of time. Then they gave me the excuse that it's because of weather. That's fine but it stopped raining about an hour before I arrived. I was pretty upset but there's no use in arguing with teenagers who clearly don't want to be there. Well, I really wanted to drive the slingshot so I arrived first thing this morning and was helped by the owner. I've met him before and he's still pretty unfriendly. He was complaining to an employee about another employee being late. It just wasn't a welcoming environment at all. However, there was one guy working that helped us get in the Slingshot and helped us checkout at the end. He was excellent and I wish I got his name! The business is rough. Our Princess Cruise stopped in Newport, RI and my wife and I wanted to take in the sites without joining a standard overpriced excursion purchased from the cruise line. Luckily we found Tom Welby's Scooter World not too far down the main drag of Newport. They offer bicycles, motor scooters and groovy 3-wheeled cars. We opted for the scooter. If everyone in your party is willing to ride their own scooter I would recommend that because we doubled on one scooter and it was a bit cramped but we made it work and had a great time doing so. We set off to view the enormous and beautiful mansions on Ocean Drive, and splintered off when we saw something interesting. It was a fun and interesting experience, and Tom is the epitome of great customer service (the young chap working the counter the day we rented needs to get a primer from Tom). If I could leave 0 stars I would. Came today and we were very excited, we even left work early to get there in time as we called and they told us 6 was the latest we could rent. We pulled in at 5:40 and asked a blond girl working where to park for scooter world. She snapped at us and said "sorry we're closed." I questioned and said "oh i'm sorry your website says you close at 7" to which she was very sarcastic and rude towards us. LOVES IT!!! We rented the scoop for an hour based on these wonderful yelp reviews. We wanted the sling but you have to reserve but there were plenty of the small ones. The Drive down ocean avenue and the views were amazing. Yes I admit while driving in the traffic it feels a little weird being in that little guy but it was soooo fun. What an adventure. Once you get off the streets your pretty much alone. So fun. 1 hour is good for the ride on ocean but if you want to explore a little more than maybe 2 hours you will need. I love the scooter ride. Just make sure you bring the scooter back 5min before the hour ends. I was 15min over (I got lost and ended up on a heavy traffic road) and I was charged the whole hour. Paid $117 for two coups and then $97 for the additional hour. I did not say anything because I was 15min over regardless of the reason. The manager is not very nice. A bit rude, actually. We parked our car in the parking lot in front of the shop and paid $20. It's $20/day, we were only staying for an hour or so but wanted my car in a secure place. There is another parking lot across the street that charges $10. Found out after the fact. If you are not crazy about the scooter ride, skip it. In stead drive to the ocean drive and stay for as long as you want. Time restrictions take the fun out. I was charged so much today that I was actually upset after the trip. Don't do business with this establishment. The bicycles are poorly maintained. The chain fell off the bike once and the shifting was terrible. The bike would shift through three gears at a time. Then I got a flat tire which cut my day short despite paying $30 for the whole day. Which all would have been fine if they had been willing to waive the fee on one bike, but they would not and still charged the full amount despite me having to bring the bike back earlier than intended. read more

Little cars were so fun but the owner is one of the most unprofessional and rude people I have ever delt with Jaw dropping rudeness from the first phone call to make the reservation, checking in to get cars, straight through to when we returned to hand in the cars after our ride. After a 5 hour wait for the Slingshot, my friend and I got into our car to cruise down to Brenton Park and view the mansions. The owner, Tom, literally chased me down the street and reached across the console, jacked up the emergency brake and told me "you don't know how to drive, get out!" I have literally driven a standard for 18 years and have a clean driving record. I was the ONLY female driver today and the ONLY person he followed out to the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle and walking back to the store front, 2 young men approached me and said that they were also unable to rent from Tom even though the other worker already processed their paperwork. We made reservations but the weather didn't cooperate so we ended up going this morning and it was well worth it. We rented the coupe, which is the 3 wheel scooter and took it out for almost 2 hours all around Newport especially along Ocean Drive and by the Mansions. Yup! Made it! Scooter World is a popular rental place that offers a variety of vehicles for a joy ride around the scenic locations in the area. There was a 30 min wait which was the perfect amount of time to map out where to go. The transaction was seamless. Sign some forms, let them get a copy of your credit card, go, return vehicle, pay and you're done! For us, 3 hours was more than enough and the total amount for the rental wasn't that bad either! We rented two bicycles this past weekend. They were horrible. One was missing air in both tires, it was making loud clunking noise and was very hard to pedal. The other was a little better, but far from good. On a scale from 1-10, I give it 0. When complained to the staff, we were told we should have called them to bring us the new bikes (no phone number given, no instructions when we picked the bikes up). We were on the other side of Newport and were staying in the town for a couple of hours only. Who has the time to wait for them to come??? Don't waste your money. Go somewhere else. read more

My experience was the same as every other poor review, an older guy with a horrible attitude told me to get off the scooter when I was just getting my footing. "I'm not letting you in the road, get off!" What kind of way is that to speak to anyone? Apparently, nothing has been done about this on any level, because it's still happening. I don't know if it's the same guy, or all different employees that the past reviews were referring to, but speaking to another person this way, let alone a customer, is completely unacceptable. It's a scooter rental place, you don't need to be a jerk on a power trip and humiliate your customers in front of a group of people, which is what he did to me. This was a fun way to explore newport! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed driving down bellevue and ocean drive in it. The reason I'm giving this a 3 instead of a 4 is because our scooter stalled and we were unable to get it to turn back on when we went to castle hill inn. We were told later on that this happens often when people go to castle hill in - if they knew this, I wish they had told us that in the beginning when we expressed our interest in going there. They were kind enough to extend our time as we waited for an employee to come by with a new one. read more

Absolutely terrible. We went to ask how long we have to do paperwork and how far in advance we should be at the place to rent a scooter for 6pm - 7pm. We were told the paperwork takes 2 minutes. We showed up at 5:45 pm and we were told that they can't rent us anything because it is almost 6 pm and they don't rent out anything after 6pm because they close at 7pm. I told them we'll be back before 7pm regardless and still pay for the full hour. They told us again they were not interested in doing that. It was our last day of vacation and they ruined the night for us. Zero attempt for any solution to make a customer happy. The manager was terrible. read more

Came here again on Labor Day weekend for the second year in a row. The folks who run the shop are super friendly and helpful. The three-wheel scooters were pricier than I remember from last year ($51/hour), but it was fun. They give you a map and highlight the route you take. Make sure to stop somewhere along Ocean Drive for great photos. The drive itself should be about 35-45 minutes depending how slow you go, but with the 20 or so mins along the water, that should be enough time. read more
