Growing up Waterside was the spot, nice place to take the family and kids! I remember coming home ( to VA) one time to find out the waterside was closed down. First time here while visiting Norfolk. It's a great spot for dining and entertainment. I would recommend checking this out if you're not too sure what to choose from other restaurants nearby. There are a decent amount of options to choose from (coffee, cupcakes, pizza, fudge, wine, beer, steakhouse, dim sum, etc). Clean environment and open seating. Me and 8 other friends went here yesterday night to celebrate my friends birthday. I've came here a few times and never had any issues but last night my friend lost her phone so we were looking for it we went to the restroom to see if it was there. And then we asked the bartender and he had it,(the bartenders also said it was fine for us to wait there ) so we were just waiting for her to get it and this bouncer CHARLES starts screaming at me to get out, and I tell him, I'm going just waiting for her to grab the phone and then he proceeds to yell into my left ear GET THE FUCK OUT. And I tell him ok I understand I'm walking please calm down. KEEP in mind I'm wearing heels and I'm also 5ft 90 lbs he's like double my size and I can only walk so fast. He then pushes me I ask for his name and he tells me he says you don't need to know my name. (I don't get it until the very end by someone else). I also start talking to security about this whole situation and the only thing they said was that's his job to get people out.... I completely understand that but if the bartenders told me it was ok to wait why would he be so disrespectful and think he has a right to put his hands on me. I really like the look of the new waterside building, and they have some nice sounding places to eat in the building, but there is NO WAY I will ever eat here again. The prices are just ridiculous. A soda is $3. Not for a cup with refills, but a CAN of soda is $3. There is no recycling anywhere in the building. All the glass beer bottles and aluminum cans go right in the garbage. Like toffee? Although brand spankin new, I can already tell this is gonna be the place to be once again. May not be totally kid-friendly but families can definitely come hang out and enjoy a variety of food and drinks here. TONS & TONS & TONS of seating around. I'm so into the industrial look so if you like the same, you can appreciate the decor and the aesthetics. It provides a big airy feel with the super high ceilings. Not a lot of wheelchair or stroller space, I did notice that. I truly can't wait til it's fully functioning and all vendors have opened up. I saw Stripers and Chipotle are coming soon. So the waterside district has been around for a while but now it's finally brand new and improved! (Just like how we all felt after NYE 2017). So here are the positives: -Beautiful decor and neat community-style restaurant layout -Still a great view of the water -soooooooo many options for food and drink from seafood to Asian to American food and barbecue ! -seems like future free concerts will be held here -a lot of parking in surrounding downtown Norfolk garages or the light rail! SO EXCITED that this place is finally open! After several years of it being out of business and basically a ghost town, Norfolk finally decided it was time for something new. The excitement is real at Norfolk as they have their first "market" in downtown. Let's start off with the layout of the market, if you've ever been to Union Market in NoVA, it's almost similar but a little smaller and less restaurants. There are two levels, lower level is mostly where all the food kiosks and restaurants are. From what I've seen, they had Guy's Smokehouse, Rocky Mountain Grill, Blue Moon tap house, Luk Fu's, Cogan's North, PBR, VIN Wine Bar, Fudgery, The Locals, Harbor Club, The Mix, and a coffee kiosk. They are also adding another restaurant called Stripers, but I'm not sure when that'll open. The atmosphere of the place is pretty laid back and mostly for young professionals. It is confusing at first because I wasn't really sure how the whole ordering food and drinks worked. So basically, you'll just go to a kiosk and order your food and sit wherever you want inside waterside or around the venue. Some places are different for example at Rocky Mountain, if you want to order food you'll need to go up to the cash register and order there. Even though it looks like a sit down restaurant where you wait for your waiter/waitress, that's not how it works. That only applies when you want to order a drink. Once you've ordered your drink you are actually able to walk around with your drink as long as you're in or around the venue. I thought this place was pretty neat, but it is a small place with way too many people. To me, it was very overwhelming but once you get the gist of the area, it really is a great place to just dine and unwind. read more

So the improvements to the Waterside District are totally for the better. From what this place was to what it is now is a night and day change. Nice place to relax because everyone can go grab their own meal. There is a Blue Moon, an Asian fusion restaurant, a coffee shop, pizza, and a couple of other eats. This is the first time in about 15 years that I revisited Waterside. I grew up Norfolk and I must say that I was truly impressed with the renovations. We enjoyed every minute of our outing. Having been to a good number of similar commerce hubs across many of the US' coastal cities, this one falls in they middle of the pack. Somewhat limited by its size, its helped considerably by its proximity to the rest of downtown. Other such projects that have failed often do so by not being properly incorporated into the city. While this is not the first attempt at Norfolk Waterside, I am very optimistic that this it iteration is here to stay. With a very short trip, I was encouraged by the foot traffic and variety of goods and foods. I hope that they make a focus on supporting local businesses as much as the big name offerings. With a good balance and some community building events, it could become a cornerstone to our downtown scene that reflects the local culture. I think it must have that connection to be truly successful. read more

This place is vibrant and unique. All the restaurants work together and carry some of the same wines. I was able to get the same Malbec at Harbor Place that I had at Vīn. The open air theme is great and inclusive. The Blue Moon (i reviewed also) restaurant has the best decor in my opinion. Vīns' wine selection was not at its full potential when I visited (just opened). The menu at Guy Fieris smokehouse is fitting and out of the box. I can't wait to eat there. They have a spot just for salads. An authentic Asian fusion noodle and poke bowl stop. Coffee house, fudgery and a mountain grill of some sort, lol. My fave is the second floor Harbor Club. The colors are beachy and posh and the patio is large with fire pits on a few tables. Great place for families and tourists. PBR wasn't opened yet, but I'm sure it's awesome. read more

Wow! This place is amazing!! I am totally impressed with The new Waterside district. There was an incredible street performer today there and the kids were jumping up-and-down enjoying this show. The place looks fantastic inside. Very family friendly! There are various games to play, great scenery and people watching. I must check out the restaurants- the Smokehouse and Dim Sum place are now on my short list. The Fudgery is very popular, as a crowd gathers around to watch them make appetizing treats. I think this is going to be very popular as a nightlife spot for the young and attractive crowd, which probably excludes me:). But looking forward to some awesome music there going forward. read more

What is with the pandering right outside the door coming from the parking garage? Where's security enforcing the no loitering signs? It's disgusting and awkward to be checking out a brand new fancy attraction on the Norfolk waterside with people vacationing potentially from elsewhere, security all over the water side and indoors but nobody actually checking the entrance from the parking deck?? A beautiful afternoon but asked for change twice by the same guy as we went in and left the building. Hanging out in a beach chair pretty much camped out next to the no loitering signs. Otherwise the place has potential. It's definitely rough, and new. Things seem a bit ADD, not really organized. Like an open concept food court, but fancier. Definitely many places to try. Definitely for adults and less for kids and families. Like a bar tour meets drunk food stands conglomeration with a huge outdoor deck slash park slash mini amphitheater thing going on. The whole place seems to have been created by an ADD alcoholic, which is good and bad at the same time. The brand new bathrooms all seem to have two soap dispensers, the pump maybe was the original idea but something went wrong so they rushed in the auto dispensers and stuck them on the mirrors. And only power blowers to dry off, no paper option, which is good and bad. We tried the Guy Fieri smokehouse which had very good food, good service, but needs some organisational work and work out some bugs. I'd believe the other places aren't much different. But great potential. I would think by the end of summer this place will have worked out the bugs and adjusted (I hope! ). read more

This is just a review on the central atrium and the food court concept as a whole. The old Waterside was a dump. Even 20 years ago it had that funky 80's mall smell. It just spiraled down the rabbit hole until it was no more. So now a developer gets a sweet deal to renovate it and it is very nice. The "food court" places are high end prices but low quality staff and so-so food. Plus you have to buy food at one place, get drinks at another... kind of a hassle. I wish it luck. But from the crowds I have seen, they should be just fine. read more

1. Extremely loud and crowded. 2. They seemed to just add some lights and a fresh coat of paint on the old Waterside's basic design - an airport cafeteria spread of dining options. We love going to Downtown Norfolk and Granby St. for all the local bars and restaurants but Waterside really dropped the ball by featuring mostly chains. (Cogan's is there but more as a grab and go option, it doesn't offer the same cool vibe as their original location.) 3. Also, there is no close handicapped parking except if you're lucky and can snag one of the few in the garage across the street. 4. I like it here, I love blue moon so that is a good place to get beer. They have a huge selection of flavors to try. I do not recommend the food tho, it's all sub par bar food. Moving on to Guy's...it's trash. Don't even waste your time. Pure novelty there, food is awful. Really the only decent restaurant I have found here is Stripers. They have great food. See my review of Stripers for more detail. There is a great view of the water and it is a pretty good spot to have a nice walk at night along the water. This is a really good venue for events so keep your eye out for some good ones! The last Wing event was decent. read more

Not terribly long ago we brought some vendors who were from out of town to Waterside. We had been going to Top Golf & some other Virginia Beach establishments but I've always considered myself a Norfolk gal. So I wanted them to experience the newly renovated Waterside District. The drinks & food were good - and that's the only reason I am not giving this review a 1 star. Everything went downhill the moment I went to get my car out of valet. No where in the signage nor did the valet attendant tell us if you don't come for your car/keys by 10:00 PM they will be locked up & you will be stranded. I went to leave at 10:25 PM and NO ONE could get my keys from the valet closet. I was told that this was a policy of the third party vendor but I know third party vendors will adhere to the policy of the establishment. I later found out from the third party vendor that it is a Waterside policy. So, fail #1. They lied to a customer in order to make themselves look better about their own policy & restrictions. Because I was stranded, my friend had to drive back to get me so i could (thank goodness) go get my spare key b/c I need my car every day to take my kid to school. Leaving my car there until 5 PM the next day (b/c that's when the valet comes back) was not an option. (another lady was stranded and she had to leave her car for a week b/c she was going on a cruise the next day at 8 AM). A few days later, I sent a message through the Waterside District website to their Marketing Manager, Fred Rose. He was very prompt to email me back (within 30 minutes) and asked if he could call me the next day to get more details. Fail #2, he never called (another lie to the customer) Fast forward a few months later. I run into Fred Rose at a networking event. Where I proceeded to talk to him about the situation above. He said he remembered my email and tried to say he called me. He never called me b/c I am still livid to this day that no one has ever acknowledged this terrible valet policy at Waterside. He then proceeded to become rather arrogant and that only led me to be more annoyed by the entire situation. After I left the networking event, Fred approached my co-worker and proceeded to ask her "Is the coast clear? How do you know her?". Fail #3, not only is that unprofessional behavior but absolutely arrogant to assume MY co-worker would be interested in engaging in any kind of bashing conversation about me. I have no interest in spending my hard earned money at an establishment that not only fails & lies to their customers but has the audacity to try and start a bashing conversation within their circle of friends/coworkers. I will take my business to the Hilton or other location establishment in Norfolk in the future. read more

2 stars is being generous. The only good thing they got going for them is the nice scenery and live band which is inside, where you aren't even able to hear, outside. Staff is pretty nice, however, is not able to meet the standard needs of a customer no matter where you sit. Kitchen was shut down temporarily because it was too backed up on a Saturday night at 9pm when the restaurant was about only half full. Waterside district is a work is progress, with enormous potential. Sections boarded up, waterside stage, and an open interior can show that this area is really trying to be the new hip place to be on a Friday night. Majority of the restaurants within the district don't have very good reviews and I haven't tasted all of them so I can't judge them all but when you walk by a restaurant with no one in it and bad reviews online, you really have to question some things. While you have restaurants that are bombs such as Guy Frieri's smokehouse, you have the counter restaurant, Blue moon taphouse which is very good, enough to go back a couple of times. Then Waterside District is a place where you can go out and enjoy with family, friends or on a date night. It offers a variety of choices if you are stuck with a group that is pretty indecisive. What it has to offer: There are local eateries and big name businesses that are part of Waterside District. What is offers is food and drinks for a way to spend the time away. It has a variety of food options, making it perfect for when not everyone can agree on what they want. Star Hill brewery is located in the middle offering their beers, mixed drinks and craft beers from local breweries. There is also a wine bar for those who want to be more classy. There is outside seating, with bars set up to compliment your experience with a nice drink. There are music stages offering live music. There is a big TV inside that broadcasts big games of the day or night. After the district closes, you can head on over to PBR Norfolk and enjoy the nightlife further. The design: It is like an adult jungle gym for foodies and those who enjoy a great drink. In the middle, you can find Star Hill Brewery, where you can grab yourself a craft beer or a mixed drink, which is where you have to go if you want something that is not considered "domestic." Surrounding the brewery, you'll find different food options such as Cogans, Rappahannock Oyster Co, Luk Fu, The Mix, The Local, among others. You are freely able to move around within the location, and choose a place to sit and enjoy the time. I would describe it like a step up from a food court, where the restaurants clearly have their set area but are not confined within walls. There are also "full" restaurants that are attached to the district, which are Blue Moon Taphouse, Guy Fieri's Smokehuse, and PBR Norfolk. There is outside seating, where drinks can be ordered at the outside bars to enjoy the outside atmosphere more. Cost: The prices vary from restaurant to restaurant. Drinks offered are the usual price that you would see at other bars. I am not aware of any Happy Hour specials, and may be something that is in place or will be eventually. The food there can seem pricey, but I would say that the cost for food at some of the places there are to be expected. Overall, I would say that you do pay a little extra for the ambiance and experience there. I enjoy myself greatly when I am able to come here. I have found myself in Downtown Norfolk since the emergence and freshness of the new localities. I recommend coming here first, and it is a great way to start the night before the night gets crazier. I would say it is a family friendly place, but as mentioned by another review, the prices may not feel all that family friendly after feeding the whole family. Ah, some freshness with the new district. Sure, I remember the days of Have A Nice Day Cafe and Bar Norfolk but those days are well past me. Fast forward several years and here we are, a facelift of Norfolk's amazing Waterside District. Lots of cool things happening at the district (from what I experienced): - A few music stages for live bands outside. The Deloreans were playing Friday night and while I'm used to having to push through people to get a few of the band, you pretty much can be on the outskirts of the stage/people gathering area and still enjoy the live music. - The venue itself is one really big eatery. Open seating is available all throughout the venue. - With several food options available, order and grab your food, and grab a seat where you can find one. If there are multiple people in your party, everyone can get what they want and you can still enjoy your meals together. - So far, I've had the poke bowls (yum, not to mention you can get a meal for around $10-15). I also indulged in some ice cream from The Fudgery. - There's a huge TV in the main area. On Friday, they had the Cavs/Warriors game that everyone was so in tuned to watching. - Food options include: poke, ice cream, Guy Fieri's Smokehouse, an oyster/seafood spot, coffee/cupcakes, Blue Moon, Cogan's Pizza to name a few... My reco: find a nice night and plan a date night or group of friends to enjoy many food options while having enjoying music (both local and national talent). If there's a big sports game, they'll most likely have it on the big screen along with several TVs throughout. Even being so new, it wasn't too terribly busy, even with Harborfest going on at Town Point Park. Overall, a great facelift for an area that needed to bring back some love for Norfolk. We have been here twice. Both times with my children and their families. This is not a child-friendly venue. The prices were ridiculous and the entire set up is confusing. We ordered a pizza from Cogan's and it was terrible. We ordered a Reuben and a grilled cheese from the Local. The sandwiches were decent but the tab was $21. Ridiculous for lunch prices. We miss the old Waterside. We will not be back. I would rather go to the local seafood joints at the beach than deal with this crap again. read more

Went on the 10th to check it out and also went on the 11th for the weezer concert. On the 10th a very rude woman at the front door stopped and told us we couldn't come in because we weren't staff and we had to go to Blue moon since its the only place open. So we went to Blue moon, wait was like 20min place was packed as expected but was very unorganized. we got a text that our table was ready so we went to the front desk and there were 5 females standing around talking and laughing instead of paying attention. One greeted us and said sorry they'll get you in a second so after 5 min of standing there with my hands in my pockets 3 people walked up to us each with menus saying come this way! and then they all realized there was 3 of them and started laughing and one took us to the table (again unorganized) we sat at a high top. It was 62 degrees that night and they had the giant wall open to the outside and sat us right at it, cold breeze kept coming in so we tried for a different table but failed, so we left. Night of the weezer concert we got in line for it at 330 the doors opened at 6. Guy walking the line said there would be food but when we got inside there was only OVERPRICED BEER zero food options. To top it off the beer was CASH ONLY so after awhile they started letting people into waterside with a hand stamp to get food and use ATM. So me and wife starving went in. It was packed (again expected) but the outside bars weren't serving food only drinks. One lady told me to go right inside and they have food so I did, I was informed that that particular place was only doing drinks and no food (WHAT?!) so walking around checking other places I saw the prices for things, at the oyster place two small lobster rolls smaller than your fist was $21 seriously?! so I tried get into the smokehouse, it was an 1.5 hour wait (expected not a big deal) so they have a kiosk outside and I saw them making nachos and was like BAM ill get those and guess what they were $17 for a small tray of cold nachos! I was starving so I got them, they were ok not the best but decent. So the wife wanted a coffee, we went to the coffee place inside and they said all they had was regular coffee NOTHING ELSE (really on a grand opening?) So she got one, she went to add the usual cream and sugar but didn't see any cream so she asked hey do you guys have any cream and was responded with "we aint got none" so she said how don't you have any cream? the other lady working said we have milk so the wife took that. Now we had two gift cards we got from first Friday so I went to the fudgery to get an ice cream. tried to pay for it with the gift card and apparently they are one of the only places that does not except the card (dah fuq?) So we then went outside and got a beer at the blue moon outside bar paid $7 a beer and went to walk back into the venue, we were told you cant enter here you have to go to the tent you came in at and they'll let you in there and I asked is the beer cool? and he said yeah as long as its in a plastic cup. so we go to the tent and they were clueless rude ladies they told us NO you have to walk back out to the street where you came in and walk back through and you cant bring your beer. So we told them what the other guy told us and she replied with " we weren't told that and we don't have walkie talkies to contact anyone" (wtf how do you not have communication with each other?) so I went to go back to that guy and inform him what we were told. Well it was a different guy so I tried to tell him and he was an asshole. basically told us to bad and that you guys were let in here to get food and use atm not to buy beer and that hes not letting us in that way. So we stood there and when people would walk up to try and get back in and were told to go to the tent we informed them it was false and that theyd have to walk out to the street again to get in. So after a couple of minutes the original guy showed back up. I informed him what happened and he said sorry come in this way and he let us in so guy in the purple vest you the real MVP. New politics were great don't listen to them but hell of a live show. Weezer was pretty dead no crowd interaction basically played straight through stopped once and said a few words and they were out granted it was a free show so was still cool to see a once major recording artist play for free. Overall id give waterside a 2 star rating, the grand opening was anything buy that. It was to heavily focused on alcohol (just like the last time it was shut down) so hopefully they get there act together. Honestly, i'm really happy the remodeled the Waterside and made it more "modern" however, it's not all that great. Personally I didn't enjoy my time there as much as i hoped for. People really hyped it up and it just wasn't for me. I went on Friday and it was jumpin. I mean i kind of figured it would be packed because 1 it's the weekend, 2 it's new, and 3 it's prom. Parking wasn't that bad, i paid $5 and found a decent parking spot. I walked across and first i was confused on where to really go. There really wasn't that many "places" to go other than The Marketplace. When we went inside The Marketplace it was PACKED. There were so many people i could barley move. People we were so rude, most of them were drunk, the music was super loud, it was a mess LOL. I was getting hungry and like there weren't a lot of food options. My date and I were walking around trying to find what to eat. Guy Fierri (SP) had a restaurant in there but i had his food when i vacationed at Atlantic City and it wasn't too hot for me. It was really confusing because there were servers near computers and when we thought it was a restaurant they were like it's open seating. You grab your food and sit where you want. Okay, that's cool. BUT WHERE ELSE CAN I EAT? I mean most of it were bars. We saw a pizza place, Cogan's, but once we got there the lady was like "Oh i'm sorry, we stopped serving food because we ran out of pizza's." WTF. Okay, so we saw a salad place, The Mix, next to it. We were legit standing in front of the food and NO ONE approached us. So we went to the Noodle Bar. MY GOSH. It took us 5 yrs to order food. I mean, i understand they were busy but the workers were going SUUUUPER SLOW. I grabbed a menu and omg the food is so over priced. I spent almost $30 on some dumplings, a poke bowl, and a drink... THIRTY FREAKING DOLLARS. And they took their sweet ass time to make my food. The dumplings were good i must admit. The sauce really complemented the taste and the salmon in the poke bowl tasted really fresh. My drink tho?? Home girl did a crappy job! So for desert we bought some Ice Cream. We approached the counter and NO ONE NOTICED US. They were all in a little circle just talking to each other. I just stood there staring at them until they noticed me. They gave me 2 scoops and charged me for 2 scoops, but the funny thing is... I NEVER GOT ASKED IF I EVEN WANTED 2 SCOOPS!!!! I paid $6 for some Ice Cream... it wasn't even good. I think the only good thing about the Waterside is just walking around and enjoying the scenery and live music.. The Waterside in my opinion is more of a "drink and chill" type place. Def. make sure your wallet is stacked, already ate, and ready to get drunk. read more

I liked having a market-place of food and drink.. and entertainment. Nice open to see the water front.

Nice establishment. Clean. Entertaining. Food is WAY overpriced with no cheaper options available. I was so disappointed. A medium pizza is the size of a kids personal but it's $12 minimum. Will not be going back anytime soon. This is certainly not the family establishment they were advertising. No family could afford to eat there. read more

For Luk Fu! $10 Ramens is 1 out of 10. if you enjoy ramen i would never order their terrible so called "Ramen" you better of buying Ramen at Oriental store and it would still be 10x better than this place. read more
