Waving Tree is all about the wine. No fancy tasting room, no charcuterie boards, no farm to table dinners, and barely a sign on the white door that blends into the white building. Just really good wine at remarkably affordable prices. Many varieties not typically grown out here like Barbera and Nebbiolo. While many tasting rooms have a flight of four or five, Waving Tree was pouring from over 2 dozen bottles. It's either $5 a pour or buy a bottle, and all the tasting pours are free. Yes, you heard that right! Darn, why didn't we start our day here! Next time we most definitely will. So many wines - white, rose, red, dessert - that everyone you are tasting with can choose their own pours. Shannon is the server and she is so down to earth and friendly. She keeps everyone happy even when the place is full, which it usually is on weekends. Bar stools along a bar and a few high tops. Definitely not the most comfortable seats. Best to just hang at the bar. I liked so many wines but had already done damage at a few other places so I left with a 2016 Barbera. My friends bought Cabernet and Syrah. We all agreed we need to go back. If you are going wine tasting on the Washington side of the Gorge, start here, the furthest winery heading east in this area. Trust me. Take 84 out to Biggs then cross the bridge and follow your GPS to Waving Tree in the quaint little town of Maryhill. Find the door, go in! Then if you want to try others, go up the hill and head west on SR14 and visit Maryhill, Jacob Williams and Cascade Cliffs. That's a full day of fabulous wines. Your welcome! read more

Staff was so fun and friendly, the guy knew his stuff and was great with food paring suggestions. Omg the tasting fee was $5. That's not a typo. The place down the road was $30 tasting fee and those wines weren't half as good. In addition they let you taste whatever is open, pretty much the whole menu. The wines were surprisingly great. One never knows with smaller places but i could have bought every bottle. We bought a dozen bottles here and not one bottle from the major corporate winery down the road. Terrance and his family know wine making and are passionate about it which you can tell simply by both the quality of each wine and in their knowledge they share with you. I've tried many wineries along the west coast, Oregon and Washington regions and Waving Tree I would have to put atop my list of some of the better wines I've had. The good part I found is that this winery is a go to for me as I know I will enjoy nearly all of the wines they produce. I'm more or a red wine drinker and their reds are all spectacular to my own individual palate. Definitely recommend giving them a visit. One tip: if you stay in the nearby Celilo Inn they offer their guests a glass of Waving Tree Sangiovese and also have a wine tasting package which you may enjoy. read more

We have discovered Waving Tree at the pre - Passport Weekend function in Portland and really liked their wine and their attitude. So we wanted to visit them during the Passport Weekend. Easy enough...looked them up on the map...are you kidding me? They were the very last winery in the Columbia Gorge. The yummy wine still lingered on our taste buds and so we went. It was our first time driving past Hood River and let me tell you, we loved it! The Gorge is completely different the more east you go. Beautiful hills, elegant windmills, the trees give in to shrubs and desert-like landscape. The tasting room is a cute little wood cabin and the winery is just past that, through fruit orchard. They have nice wine selection and most of the wines that we liked had this delicious spiciness...hmm. Needless to say, we became members of the wine club - our first ever, are we adults or what? read more

Wow. We *almost* didn't stop stop here. Thank goodness we did! It doesn't have the sweeping grounds and view that Maryhill does, but it has better wines, and that's what tasting is about. So we stopped and it turned into one of the best surprises I've had in years of wine tasting all over the world. Seriously. I was blown away by the offerings. Had a great experience here. This is a hidden gem, in my opinion. I got to the wine tasting room just in time to learn that the wine maker, Eric, was starting a tour at the winery. This was about a mile away. It was a very thorough tour, with his Louisiana dry-wit humor spicing things up. I learned tons more about wine making from this than the many others I've been on. Being a small winery, it was good to get "hands on" with the wine maker's sampling of barrels. Back to the tasting room. The place was chock-a-block full of "eclipse people" en route to central Oregon. In other words - BUSY. I think in normal times, this would have been more relaxing. None the less, I tried a few different wines. These are very well-made reds, small production and, even so, very reasonably priced. They sell bottles for $20 to $35 that most other quality, small production wineries charge $50+ for. However, the keys to a great visit are here - good tour, very nice wines (I bought 2 bottles) and a little snack buffet so when you sit on their deck, enjoying your wine, life is pretty damn good! read more

Wow! Wow! Wow! I must admit that I really wasn't expecting much. We had just left Maryhill and not expecting to having our minds blown. Waving Tree has a small tasting room and this goes to show that appearances can be deceiving. My wife, who has the best palate ever, was blown away with how good their wines were as well. 5 bucks each for a tasting if you do not buy anything (you will) and they have close to TWENTY wines to taste if you wish. We left with close to three cases of wine and as freshly minted members of their wine club. The wine club is only a commitment of 3 shipments of 6 bottles each and you can customize whatever you get but nothing is bad here. The Rose and Barbera were some of the best we have ever had. If you are in Columbia Gorge, please do not miss out on Waving Tree! read more

The wine was excellent we ended up buying four bottles! Two dessert wines, a Petite Syrah, and a Nebbiolo. They had easily 20 different wines for tasting and all of them were estate wines except one. Mom and I enjoy the dessert wines and we tasted 4-5 different dessert wines! Such a great selection, do yourself a favor and go! Family owned and operated as far as I can tell. The wine maker was the man who gave us our tasting and his wife took our money. She said the son was in the fields tending the grapes and the daughter was working on the remodeling for their tasting room. Such nice people! read more

This place was amazing. Although this location was not open, about 2 miles east of it was there vineyard and they did tastings there to! The woman who served us was the owners wife. She was incredibly sweet and nice. She stopped what she was doing to give us the full experience! She explained every single wine (there was at least 10) and just had a great conversation with her. Not only was the customer service aspect really good but there wine was really really good! I definitely was a customer and will be every time I'm in the area. It was everything I've ever hoped and dreamed of in a fruity red. The bottle looks cheesy and sort of hippie gimmicky. This was the last winery along the Columbia River. After wine tastings at four other wineries, this was a delightful find. Although, a bit hard to find, we missed the turn off, but eventually found it. I'm glad we didn't give up. It is a tiny tasting room in a small parking lot right next to the Mary Hill State Park entrance. We were lucking to spend time with the owner, Terrance, who answered all our questions and we learned more about the different grapes that are harvested in this family run winery. We were surprised how much we enjoyed the wines here. This was the only place where I could actually detect the different aromas of each wine. We enjoyed the 2008 Nebbiolo-World Wine Awards 88, The Works - World Wine Awards 90, 2008 Barbera -World Wine Awards 89 so much we bought 2 cases of a variety of different wines that were reasonable priced that we are enjoying immensely now that we are back at home in Seattle. We spent last summer wine tasting in Napa Valley but this area has some great wineries, too, and this winery was top on our list. read more

Since our last visit they completed their renovation and the tasting room is much more spacious now. So many of the wines here are good, they are all estate wines (except I believe one, but I forget which one it was) and most of them are in the $20 range. If you are a wino and in the area this is definitely the LAST place I would stop because they have TWENTY-FIVE wines for you to taste for $5. It's insane. Perhaps we got bad bottle, but after doing the wine tasting, we bought a bottle of thier Zinfandel and I must say it was one of the worst I've ever had. Very tannic and vinegar like. Discovered this small winery 2 years ago. Now I am a wine club member and travel there at least 3 times yearly from The Dalles for more wine. Have tried many other winerys in the area and like one or two of their wines but at Waving Tree I like a dozen or more. Great prices, good wine, and very reasonable wine club price. We found Waving Tree winery by accident last year and had such a wonderful experience with their Barbera wine that we made this part of this year's vacation plans. This year when we came to the winery it had been completely remodeled on the outside and the inside making it much more inviting. We had an excellent tasting of a large flight of wines from a gentleman named Joshua who was pleasant and knowledgeable as well as passionate about the wines they make. Their wines are uniformly drinkable with a good differentiation between labels and some subtle notes which we expect to open more when aerated. In our opinion their wines are underpriced and a great value. This is a family run winery with the Dad (Terrance) being the winemaker and his two children and a few others doing a lot of the other work of making some very excellent wines. This is just around the corner from Maryhill winery which we didn't even go to this year. Instead we bought two cases of premium wine from our new friends at Waving Tree. read more
