Recently visited this store for the first time. On this particular visit they were and still are celebrating '100 Years' in business, so they had a sale going on, buy 1 pair get the 2nd pair 40% off and Nick gave me 20% off my third pair of shoes I purchased. Once I was home and tried wearing one of the pairs in the house, the shoes just didn't fit right. So a week later when driving by the store again, I went in to return that pair of shoes (which had the 40% discount on) which Nick wanted to make clear I had a refund. When I got home I began to think of the whole situation and felt like the receipt should have been reworked to show my that I paid full price for my 1st pair of shoes and received 40% off the second pair of shoes. So I called and asked to speak to the owner, he put me on hold and came back tried to explain how his store policy worked. Then he called me back and said it was only a $5 difference between 20% a pair of shoes and 40% a pair of shoes. Lets put it this way $109 - 40%(44.00) and $135 -20%(27.00) is a $5.00 difference? I tried to explain my math but he just didn't want to hear it. Went back to Store and returned the pair of Shoes that had the 20% discount based solely on principle. He proceeded to raise his voice and tell me he didn't need to do business with shoppers like me. Nick also raised his voice, and seemed incapable of keeping his mask over his nose (yep, did bring this to his attention). I have wide feet and finding comfortable shoes is hard for me. I came here and it was shoe heaven for me. The man helped me try on several pairs until I found "The One." The last pair like it that I bought was similar but $25 more. They were both New Balance and of similar quality. The shoes were fine as was the price but the man helping me was a real star. I wish that I could remember his name. He was the fellow in his 60's but I enter acted with the younger guys too. It seems like n all star team. read more

Square Deal shoe store is by far in my opinion one of the best places to go for shoes. There a shoe store that knows there shoes by far. I've been going there off and on for over 60 years and starting back in the 5o's when I was a kid and my father would take me there. They waited on you and not you waiting on them . They measure your feet the correct way. There reasoning is to satisfy you the correct way. There not there to just sell you a pair of shoes but to wanting you to come back for your next pair of shoes. I'm going back there to get me a good pair of winter boots this time. Remember one thing. I have bought many things here over the years with which I've been quite happy and I like the idea of supporting a local family-owned business in a chain-store world, however, I had a bad experience and won't go back. My advice is to check to make sure you are buying the right size, and go in when there are other customers present, to avoid any perceived 'pressure to buy'. If you enjoy a lot of personal attention from the salesman and micro-managing owner who sits on the other side of the room watching TV and talking to other people, but who watches, listens, 'supervises' and comments...you won't be disappointed. Might be nice if there was more of a female 'presence'. read more

I've lived in Des Plaines for 27 years and went into square deal shoes for the first time last Friday. The store was clean and the staff was polite. They didn't have the shoe I was looking for in stock, because it had just been released, but they were able to order it without an additional cost. The price I paid was right on par with how much the shoes were online. When I came in a half a week later they remembered my name and what I was there for. I will definitely be back! read more

DO NOT DEAL WITH THESE PEOPLE! Bought two pairs of shoes for my father (at HIGHLY INFLATED PRICES). He was measured in the store by one of their employees with a MAJOR crappy attitude. My father tried wearing the shoes while walking the dog. His feet hurt him so badly, that he almost had to take them off in the middle of the walk, and walk home in his socks. He then tried walking with the other pair of shoes. Again, same problem. The return policy is 14 days. We brought the shoes back after day 7. The owner/employee REFUSED to give my dad his money back. LOVE this shoe store! My son wears a wide shoe which can be very difficult to find. We needed dress shoes for several upcoming events and I just did not have the patience to muddle through tons to shoe boxes at a "self serve" store trying to find a wide shoe while my son does a slow burn. The folks at Square Deal remembered me from my earlier visit when I told them what I was looking for so, when I came in with my son they measured him and came out with shoes that were just what he wanted. The salesman made sure the shoes fit perfectly, even adjusting the heel because it was slipping off a bit when my son walked. Not your grandmothers shoe store! Great selection, styles, service, quality and prices. I had been driving by this store for a year and finally stopped in one Saturday. Spent 2 hours with the owner who was so helpful and knew so much about each shoe (fit, quality, etc). It made things so easy. Being family owned for generations meant personal service, which you never find any more. They even put the shoes on your feet and took them off. Who does that any more? I ended up buying 3 very different styles of boots. No more DSW or ordering on-line just to end up sending most of them back because they did not fit.
