But if you're searching for someone to work with, finding someone that represents themselves honestly is probably a good place to start.

It didn't slow them down. Partway through, they ran out of rock in Whatcom County. Instead of stopping the job, waiting on a delivery, or dropping in something that didn't match, Brent went and sourced the rest out of Skagit County and kept moving. That's the part I'd want to know about a contractor before hiring one. The walls are set with large quarried stone, stepped properly into the grade, and the driveway behind them was built up and compacted so it drains instead of pooling. The crew showed up when they said they would and left the site clean at the end. If you need excavation, retaining walls, drainage, or driveway work in Whatcom or Skagit County, call them.

Their website promises a series of service calls over the "next 7-10 days." I have emailed once, and called 4 times: each time, he promises to come and check them, and then doesn't show up. Bellingham Tree Tech responded the same day and was able to come give an estimate the next day. Of all the companies that responded to me and came to give estimates, Bellingham Tree Tech was one of only two that actually followed up with a written estimate. They were they only company that offered to show me a copy of their insurance certificate without being asked. Their bid was among the lowest of all I received and was half the price of the highest bid I received. These points made choosing them a no-brainer. They were able to come out later the same week. They had initially told me it would take half a day to remove the tree, but their three person team had the tree down and everything cleaned up in only 3 hours. When they left, except for the missing tree, firewood rounds (which I asked them to leave) and some sawdust, there was no sign they were ever here. They even remembered to hang up the bird feeder they had taken down so it wouldn't get damaged by falling branches. If I ever need another tree removed, they will be my first and only call.
