Went to college upstate and HAD to make a trip down here from UES to get the frosted sugar cookies on opening day. Absolutely stellar experience. Just as big if not bigger as the ones upstate. It is on two floors but there is a cart escalator and plenty of elevator space. Super accessible for my stroller. Really big wide aisles. Most of the top floor is prepared foods and baked goods that are made there each day. The bottom floor is produce, cheese, pantry, and refrigerator stuff. There are 30 something check out registers and it was smooth as could be. I anticipated that it would be much busier than it actually was, and that was including press. There was literally an employee standing in every aisle ready to help you. Absolutely seamless experience. As far as prices go, it's more expensive than Trader Joe's but less expensive than a Morton Williams etc. The Wegmans store brand items are the way to go here. read more

I am so surprised at how awful the taste of their food products is in various items. 1. Sesame Chicken Lomein Bowl. - It's like chewing rubber the chicken meat was so tough and had no taste but sugary sweet. 2. Blueberry Pie. - The mouth feel of the blueberry filling is awful and like eating glue and is very unpleasant not to mention the artificial flavoring they added. 3. Butter Cookies. - Not enough butter as it should be and again the artificial flavoring. read more

Their packed food quality fluctuates. The first time we got their steamed crab and shrimp pot was on par with sauce and it was marinated. The second time we got it, it was not marinated and basically the whole thing was plain and blended, probably the person forgot to marinate that day and just packed as is. From now on, I will prefer my local market to deliver better quality food, e.g., salmon, which was pre-wrapped and over three days old. Sirloin steak, which was pre-wrapped and over five days old. Finally made our visit yesterday. On a Saturday it was expectingly crowded. Funny thing is that as you enter the store a BIG sign said no pets allowed, but the guy in front of us just walked in with his poodle. I said to my friend, it's common now even to see dogs at the train tracks as well. Who will govern those restrictions..certainly not the cluster of security standing in front of the store;) Back to the store, everything is priced according to Manhattanite location. If you're already living in the costly neighborhood then probably you can pay the steeper prices. A stroll around the top level for prepared foods and the lower groceries floor seemed to be an endless circus loop of customers, workers, and shopping carts. It is a nice addition to the neighborhood and probably an appreciated one for folks living nearby. But, not for usual shopping run. read more

We went shortly after the store just opened, and the employees were all so incredibly kind and helpful and nice to us while we were walking around. The two girls working at the self checkout section (I didn't get their names, but it was a little before 3:00 PM on 10/19) were exceptionally kind and helped us so much when we had repeated issues with the checkout machine. I cannot stress enough how wonderful of an environment they created in this store and I will definitely be returning, and hope to run into those two incredible girls at self checkout again! Food was amazing quality, everything was kept in great condition in the buffet sections and all of the food was restocked consistently to make sure everything was available at all times. We had some hot food from the Asian bar, and it was cooked wonderfully! read more

I have been a long-time customer and a fan of Wegmans since before they opened their locations in New York City, so I was excited when a location opened in Astor Place. However, my recent experience there soured my enthusiasm. I went to Wegmans in Astor Place to do some grocery shopping. While some of their products are higher priced and they lack the variety of organic options compared to other retailers, I didn't mind that. What I did mind and found abhorrent was what I experienced at self-checkout. I walked to the self-checkout area where a female Staff Member directed me to an open section. When I walked to that section, I noticed another female Staff Member at the end of the aisle who was leaning her back against a column and watching other customers at self-checkout from a distance. When I entered her section, the Staff Member looked at me and immediately began walking towards me. When I finished paying at the self-checkout station, I packed my groceries. When I turned to exit, I noticed the Staff Member was right behind me, watching me even as I began to exit. I noticed the other customers who were at their respective self-checkout stations, those she paid no attention to. This Staff Member's actions were a clear act of discrimination. In Upstate New York, cities like Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo - Wegman's is a major draw for their prepared foods, great produce departments, and other high quality offerings. They're nothing special in New York City. I found their prepared foods department quite ordinary and the prices were high. They can't touch Westside Market, just a few blocks away. It's good that there's a new supermarket in the K Mart space and it's open long hours. So many things are bad about it. I feel like I'm going into a mega store in the suburbs. The sizes for many products are so large, too big for carrying home in NYC. It took them 3 months to get small baskets for shopping despite many people asking for them. There's a lack of good organic produce - for example, the only organic lemons are in a bag of 10. Very little local produce. Many of the items aren't fresh - I picked up a store-packaged piece of cheese and found that it was packed 10 days ago. Not enough vegetarian options. The prepared food is expensive, not worth the convenience. I live nearby and still use FreshDirect for most of my food. Many times, the store is full of Instacart shoppers, tying up the weighing stations with many items. I feel like they're not listening to their customers. People outside of NYC rave about Wegmans - I don't understand this. read more
