POV Sat night... 450pm. Minus 2000 outside.. Called for take out. 30 min wait. I was in the area and was there quick thinking I could have a quick Asian beer while I waited. Forget it! The dining room was empty but the phones were going nuts! One guy to man it all. Efficient but alone. Swamped. No beer for me.... With all the take-out people coming in, it took awhile for me to even pay. No extras. No fortune cookies for example coming with my $40 order. 1 soy sauce. 1 plum sauce per big bag. hmmm. BUT the food is really good. Combo #4 x 2. Nostalgic and one must add eggrolls. Deeeeelish. Service not amazing but good value. Welcome Back is a classic "Canadian Chinese Food" place. i.e. if you're looking for Fried Rice and Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls, then this is your place. I know this will cause endless discussions, but I prefer the Egg Rolls from Welcome Back to the ones at Golden Palace. They are both open end fantastic Egg Rolls. All the food is prepared well and fresh. The Hot & Sour Soup is different to any I've had elsewhere ... I really like it. Give it a try too! read more

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. We have been going there for more than 40 years and have never had a bad meal! The food is always excellent, the service is fast and friendly and the atmosphere is very pleasant. The best Chinese food in the Ottawa area! I'm not a huge fan of this place, it is really just a-ok. The atmosphere is good (maybe a 4-star) with table cloths and a bright big space. The food is just 3-stars IMHO because it is Canadian Style Chinese Food. I wonder if I am jaded? I grew up in Toronto, where they now have 2 Chinatowns. When I was growing up, we used to go to the original one, located on Dundas Street downtown, where the clientele was also mostly Asian. The Ottawa Asian food market has greatly improved over the last 20 years, and there are many more choices now. So maybe my tastes have changed with the times. Meanwhile, we went to Welcome Back when we were there early enough to do so before attending a workshop at the Pool store next door. It was convenient, fast, friendly, and tasty enough, as well as affordable. But I could probably count the number of times I have ever eaten here on 1 hand. It's ok, but it's not my go-to place any more for Chinese or any Asian food. I think the competition has improved. But I probably would go back, if I was in the neighbourhood and pressed for time. I've enjoyed here for a few years since Maple Court closed. Just picked up some egg rolls and it saddens to leave a 3-star but I won't return now. The egg rolls have gotten much smaller , barely bigger than 1/2 they were. We all noticed how little they were. But as I unwrapped them the bag was coated in drops of oil and the egg rolls themselves on the plate leaked oil out of them. This was never the case before today . The counter lady was very pleasant , but this was an expensive disappointment. Will make the extra drive going forward to Richmond. read more

Long term customer of Welcome back since they opened back in the 1980's. My family and I will even make the 20 KM trip to get food from here as we generally enjoy it so much. The restaurant went under new ownership a couple years ago, however, and since then I have noticed a few things have changed... as some of the original quality we know and love for the food has declined a bit. A couple points: - The egg rolls (one of the best in Ottawa in my opinion) are as good as they always have been, but I recently noticed that they are now smaller at least by an inch to 1.5 inches in length. - The sauces are different now. Plum sauce is much sweeter and more runny than what we are used to.. an the same can be said about the garlic sauce. The sweet and sour sauce seems to be similar. - I am not a fan of the new take out containers. They are likely safer than the Aluminum ones they replaced (many cut fingers opening and closing those), but they do not keep food during transport. - General food quality is good, but on our last visit something was definately off with the Chicken fried rice. The on provided in my #1 combination plate seemed to have a rancid taste to it.. to the point where I did not feel comfortable eating it all. This was localized to my meal only as my wife and son's meals were fine. -In restaurant, especially on busy nights, it seems the waitress is running around like a chicken with her head cut off... Meals are not always delivered at the same time for the party, and it can be really tough to get her attention when you need something (like more water) -The decor in the restaurant is what you expect for a Chinese restaurant... very dated. The place could use a remodel. Overall we will go back as our last visit might have just been an off day. I will keep and open mind and hope things improve. read more

The worst Chinese restaurant we have ever had takeout food from. The order had not even been cooked when we were told to pick it up so we had to wait for them to cook it. 25 minutes later I received it. When I got home, I discovered the dish had lots of onion, which due to allergy we had asked to not have in the meal. It was undercooked as well. The butterflied shrimp had a very thick unpleasant batter, and very small shrimp. The menu said the butterflied shrimp had bacon, however only two small pieces of bacon in the whole dish, one just being a square of bacon fat with no meat. We will never order from this restaurant again. read more

Welcome back has that great chinese food that you could get in the 70s and 80s. My sister and I love their food and have gone there for years. Their egg rolls are superb and their bacon-wrapped battered jumbo shrimp is freaking delicious. Their crispy beef and honey garlic spare ribs are classic. And I love that their chicken balls are not overloaded with batter - they are meaty and delicious. It's a small, quiet family business and a place I love to go on my birthday. It's my first time here. The server was kind and efficient. The food is ok for me (not too salty & oily.) Maybe not so tasty as common chinese cuisine. ( but it means more health as well :-)) The interesting thing is that a lot of customers are senior people.(almost 90% when we were here) The price is reasonable. I got takeout from this restaurant for the first time and it was nothing impressive. I ordered a combo plate, the food is typical Westernized Chinese food and would have expected more for the price. Since I had never ordered here before, you would expect for the price you pay, a combo plate should include an egg roll, but they're not. They did however included a fork and napkin. The interior looks like it has not been updated in ages with old furniture and dirty floors. The staff seemed alright for the 5 minutes I was in there to place my takeout order. I guess if you're just looking for a quick late night meal, it's an okay place, just be prepared to pay more for an egg roll! read more

Walked in on Saturday at 5pm to order take out (garlic chicken balls, mixed appetizers, Korean shrimp and chow mein. Was promised a wait of 20 minutes, but after 10 minutes loads of people walked in to pick up phoned-in orders, so in the end we waited for almost 45 minutes. There was only one woman trying to serve the restaurant, take orders and hand out orders. Appetizers were all recooked or warm-up (spring rolls were burned to a crisp!). The garlic chicken balls were oily dough balls with hardly any chicken and no garlic. Korean Shrimp presented as wrapped in dough beef bits. The bbq pork was dry and chewy. In short: it was aweful food. Not sure why so many people give it 5 stars, maybe we hit them on an off night? We won't be back... read more

First off, this is not a buffet! Classy attempt , yet at second look just cheap( more homey feeling though). Clean, cheap and really good service. Smoking hot waitress by the way. Take out is big there, but I chose to dine in. Got the #1 combination plate and was miserably disappointed. Everything from the fried rice to the chicken balls was just plain. Not to mention that 3/4 of the plate was effen bean sprouts. Would not eat here again. Maybe try the east garden down the road. read more
