This is an incredible Taiwanese supermarket that has a wide selection of Asian goods and also a food court with a "Taiwanese Gourmet" Restaurant (reviewed separately). The food selections are good and the produces are fresh. However, the customer service is terrible. They gave me a $5 dollars coupon to be used next time. I tried to used it before expiration date at checkout, the cashier told me it was not valid in regular checkout, had to buy something in pastry or bread more than $5 to get the $5 off. She sent me to talk to the customer service. Of course nobody was at the counter. They do honor the coupon they issued. read more

I don't like to leave bad reviews. This was our first trip to Welfresh. My son wanted to go to the Welfresh Deli for his birthday. I ordered the Dry Spicy Noodle bowl. It seemed to have the potential to be good. Unfortunately, it seems like whoever was washing the dishes decided to not rinse the bowl. When I received my food and smelled it and it smelled like cleanser or heavy duty dish soap. I took a couple bites and it tasted bitter with a heavy hint of soap or cleanser. I threw it away. My son had the beef noodle soup bowl. He found a piece of the steel wool sponge in his soup. When we first sat down at a table, it smelled like poo. We moved to a different table , it smelled like cleanser, similar to how my noodles tasted and smelled. We won't be returning. read more

What a find! Pleasantly surprised after a doctor's appointment for my father to find this spot. Dad mentioned seeing something about it in the Chinatown news a few years ago. Easy to find off HWY6. Went in on a Wednesday early afternoon. The store is very clean and organized. The front section had a Taiwanese eatery and a Chinese deli. Dad was interested in the deli so he scoped out the food options. They had a variation of combo meals and dad opted to try the 4 combo - 2 meats, 2 veggies and steamed rice for $6.75. what a bargain. They have a nice assortment of dishes to choose from as well as other specialty foods like tea soaked eggs, Jung (rice with meat wrapped in banana leaves), and other items. The fruit and vegetable selection was fresh and nicely displayed. The pricing was competitive and they run quite a few sales. They sell an assortment of Asian staples like seasonings, noodles, rice, snacks and of course meats and seafood. The aisles were stocked, sales were marked clearly, and it was very organized. I love Taiwanese food, so when I found out about this market, I was so eager to come by and check it out! My first impression was that the place is well kept and organized. I was particularly impressed with the seafood and meat frozen section. It looked like they just bought new freezers and restocked it. I was also pleasantly surprised to find many food items and produce for Vietnamese cooking. It's great because then I won't have to make a trip to different stores to find what I need! Also, there is a small food court and bakery with tables and chairs for dine-in. read more

Expired sauces still kept on shelves. Definitely will NOT be coming back. When it first opened it was great, with fresh vegetables and fruits, now the produce department contains soggy herbs and wilted greens. I'm glad there are other Asian grocery stores in SL which I will gladly take my business to. Also, because the restaurant inside Welfresh 棒棒雞- spicy legend does not have yelp so I will leave the review here. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THERE. We went to Welfresh and wanted to pick something quick for dinner and noticed they had an image of the spicy cold chicken which looked appetizing. We ordered that to go $12.99, opened it at home and a few thin slices of chicken was on top, with the remainder of the container being bones. My husband went back and wanted an explanation and the lady at the front counter did not provide a refund, but gave us another dish which tasted disgusting. I thought this market was great even though it didn't have some items I needed. The market was very nice and clean and had lots of open space. The selection of produce and pantry staples is very nice. The meat is also fresh and they definitely keep their seafood area nice and clean which I like a lot compared to 99 Ranch Market. Welfresh also has nice specials and a little buffet inside with fresh food. I didn't get a chance to try it but it smelled delicious! I also like the dessert options here. Although major Asian grocers are nearby, I always go to Wel-Fresh first or last, but never the other places in place of Wel-Fresh. It's persimmon season right now. They easily have the best persimmon quality. There's a large selection of tofu, including various noodle styles. I feel safe about the duck eggs, and the price is fair. I miss the tendon. Maybe the newest big grocer took that share, but it's god-awful at that big grocer. I hope Wel-Fresh realizes that, and resumes that take out in their hot food section. The sitting area happened just as the pandemic unfolded. The seats seemed off-limits all but once. The veggie section looks small, but the quality, selection, and turnover is good. My friend from Guangzhou says this grocer is most authentic to mainland China. The wellness goods are priced higher than I've seen in Japanese stores. The beauty stuff looks almost non-existent. The rice selection looks good, with bearable prices. The beer selection is just okay, but almost non-existent. The cashiers are friendly enough, and don't seem ruffled or haughty about my english. read more

I've been shopping here for years but one recent incident made me not coming back to the store anymore. The scan price is higher than the shelf price on one of the noodle package I bought (1.30 more). I told the cashier the list price and want to show her. She said no and refuse to go see the shelf price and told me "want it or not the scan price". This will be my last time to shop at this place. Rude cashier and deceiving package price. read more

We purchased several frozen chickens which smelled terrible after we thawed them. When we brought them back, they refused to admit that their chickens were bad at the time of purchase. After arguing with them they finally refunded us but made us feel like liars. Prices here aren't particularly cheaper than the other Asian markets in the area. This is the best grocery store I have ever shopped in the area. The food is always fresh as the name.

The location where Welfresh is currently occupying have gone through a few changes in name and store layout. It is one of the 2 (along with Ranch 99 and about to be 3 (when Jusco moves into where Target/Original Pizza Factory/Mr. Ghetti's used to be) Chinese supermarket in the Sugar Land/Missouri City area. When Ranch 99 moved into the space next to Luby's, we all though there is no way Wel-Fresh (at the time was Wel-Farm) would stay in business since Ranch 99 received a ton of success in their I-10 location. Having shopped at both, my family actually prefers Welfresh more than Ranch 99 when we need to shop Asian groceries. Most notably, the spacing in Welfresh is much more open than Ranch 99 (where things seemed pretty crammed together, perhaps there is space difference?). We aren't claustrophobic, but we just feel that it's more comfortable for us to shop at Welfresh. Most of their fridges are new and looked clean and the store just seemed brighter than Ranch 99. Both stores do suffer from having small front cashier area where the lines to check out can sometimes meander into the isles if it gets busy. As a general guideline, if you have to use Asian ingredients, you will always find them cheaper here. Do not buy your Tofu, Bok choy, green onions (scallions), certain Asian fruits (like Persimmons and generally Asian Pears) at Kroger, HEB, Randalls, etc. because you are always going to pay more for these type of items there. However, for other common every day vegetables like carrots, broccoli, cauliflowers, garlic, onions, I would still get the at American grocery stores. For the meats, you are generally going to find cuts or parts you do not usually see in the meats section in American grocery stores. One of the best example is my wife and my love for beef tendons, which is generally something that is not available other than inside Asian markets. Aside from those special "parts," we would still get most of our everyday use meats (ground beef/turkey, chicken thighs, in American groceries. There is a bakery and a hot foods section as you enter the store where you do see those hanging ducks or other roasted meats, if you can get past looking at them and finally convinced yourself that they are not looking back at you, you can actually see lots of hot food/dishes that you can readily order a la carte to go with rice/noodles, etc. There are small seating areas close by, but most people will take these hot foods to go any way. There is also a section that sells Asian cosmetic products and other times. The public bathrooms probably need some work because it is often times not. Heck, at least you do not have to walk through the packaging/unloading areas to get to a restroom like some of the layouts in older Asian supermarkets. read more

We stopped here today to check out Welfresh Market. I've been to 99 Ranch Market across the street several times, but being new to the area, I hadn't tried out Welfresh yet. Unlike 99, you're not overwhelmed by fish odors when you first walk in the door. Also, it's bigger than 99, and has more aisles, more stocked items, similar produce, meat and fish sections. I don't feel claustrophobic at Welfresh because the aisles are a bit wider and the lighting is brighter than 99. The prices for everything are competitive to 99, and a LOT cheaper than the big box grocery stores. The staff were pretty friendly to me, despite my not being Asian. I like the way you can choose how to get your fish filleted, they make this procedure very easy for everyone. My main gripe is that some of the spices I got were lame. I got some wasabi powder and it barely had any taste at all. Likewise with dried orange powder, nothing there. I bought some dried mint leaves, and those were pretty fresh. So I'm pretty sure some of the spices I got were older than dirt. Good place, I'll be sure to return. read more

I'd been to its predecessor, Wel-Farm, a few times. Now Wel-Fresh has sprung up in its place. The supermarket overall looks very clean and organized. There is a Kamalan Bakery and a Mini-Wok inside that sells prepared food. A whole roast duck is $15.99. While we were browsing the bakery, a staff member told us everything was $1 since it was the afternoon and they were probably clearing out items before Christmas. We got a nut cupcake, several pineapple buns, a green tea pineapple bun, red bean buns, dried pork buns, taro buns, and some others. The buns were some of the tastiest I've had in Houston but were also on the oily side. You check out bakery items at the Bakery Counter. The kind staff member gave us two calendars on Christmas Eve. My mother found the seafood prices to be very low and got a couple of tilapia. The seafood counter cleans the fish for you at no charge. The checkout counter staff was also very friendly. New Asian supermarket open (re-open) just last month in Sugar Land on Hwy 6 and Austin Pkwy, after the formerly "Wel-Farm" shut down for a year or so. Store is clean, and the staff very courteous. As compared to the supermarkets in Chinatown, product varieties are somewhat lacking, and prices in general are slightly marked up, which however is totally okay to me for the convenience that it is located near where I live so I don't have to drive all the way to Chinatown to buy grocery. Inside the store there are Deli dept., Bakery cafe, as well as cell phone retailer to make it more like one-stop shopping! The bakery cafe looks pretty nice, and the baked goods and dessert cakes look decent. Concisely, the nearby "99 Ranch Supermarket-Sugar Land location" has got some competition now! read more

And so...Wel-Farm has been replaced by Wel...wait for it...FRESH. It's clear from the name and logo that they've tried to clean up the place and make it more "fresh." The interior definitely has better lighting, the floors and shelves are cleaner, and the old signs have been replaced by bright, colorful ones similar to those at 99 or H-Mart. Though I did still see some rotten persimmons, most of the produce is surprisingly fresh and reasonably priced. Not the largest selection though, which is a drawback. Most of the layout is still the same: produce on the right when you walk in, seafood and meat in the back, drinks/soy milk/tofu on the left, frozen stuff in the middle. One main change is that there is a nice bakery area on the very right, in place of the xiao chi (snacks) that used to be there. There was a large variety of breads and everything looked fresh. Bottom line: Wel-Fresh is an upgrade for sure from Wel-Farm. Reasonable prices, but nothing jumped out at me as being super cheap. These changes + the location (smack dab in the middle of Sugar Land's Chinatown) might draw in some of 99's loyal customers. (And just an aside--I saw some zico, Horizon milk, and Tropicana sold for ridiculous prices by the soy milk...not sure why you would go to an Asian supermarket for that. $5.49 for a carton of Simply Orange? This review is in regards to the CAFE/DELI AREA ONLY. Their customer service is rude, and extremely unprofessional. The workers in the back are consistently making me feel uncomfortable with their revolting looks (perverts) and their childish giggles. I kid you not, I was trying to get out of there ASAP because of how uncomfortable I felt, they giggled and stared at me the whole time as I was waiting in line to make my order and pay. The cafeteria people (I hate to use the term "ladies" cause they sure don't act like one) in the front are no better than the ones in the back, they feed into their disgusting behaviors by giggling along with them like a bunch of children. I will not be returning ever again. Overall, my experience with this store has gotten worse and I will inform my friends and family members to not come here. 99 Ranch has better customer service. read more

This review is for the deli/restaurant inside the supermarket. They recently debuted a new takeout menu so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the salt & pepper pork and beef stir fried flat noodles. The pork was ok, pretty tasty but more bones than meat on most pieces. The noodle dish however was awful. The was a sour smell when I opened the container, and I tasted a piece of beef. It was rancid! I threw the whole thing out. Disgusting! I've eaten from the hot bar many times and it's fine for what you pay for it. But do not order from the kitchen, obviously quality control is not happening. read more

But then this store, Welfresh opened in its place. It seems to be the exact same store as Welfarm was. So I've got no idea whats going on. I didn't buy much, mostly just walked around. I used to come here before when it was Well-Farm, but was surprised to see it somewhat came back when I went out to eat around here a couple of nights ago. The new design is nice and alil somewhat spacious. Price wise, I find it affordable in terms of getting spices for certain dishes I like to make and they also have some items that I could not find at 99 ranch. I recently brought a bag of brown rice Quick &Easy from Welfresh Market. I got home and open it after a week of purchase. In the cooked rice I realized it had bugs (weevils) in it. I brought it back to the store a week later because of the distance from my home. The manager refuse to exchange the bag of rice even though it was obvious that the 2 weeks old bag of brown rice was fully infested with bugs(weevils). It was only $9, but it was the principle. The store sold me a bad product and all I wanted back was a fair exchange. They refused. I been shopping at Welfresh since they first open and I used to shop there when it was Welfarm. In fact, recently went to the H Mart on Blalock, due to friend raving about it, and still had to stop by Welfresh to pick up a couple of items that H Mart did not have. Love the hot deli. WelFresh has a few things that we would need that 99Ranch doesn't, and lacking a few things that 99 has. But then often times it gets annoying that we have to go to both. That's not necessarily each of their own fault, but for me, it's just more of a waste of time. Welfresh has decent price of vegetable and others but the choices are limited. I think they are smaller than Ranch 99. I came here because they are next to qqpuppies... I would recommend owner to check on their packaged poultry esp...salmon often. Last time i bought one home and it rotted in my hand when i wash it, not to mention the funky smell i could not get rid off after touched them. The flavoring wasn't too bad, it was just that the pieces of lamb in there were either all fat or bone. There was literally no meat. Be careful what you get at the deli. I always loved fried breadsticks. So when I saw welfresh started selling them, I was delighted until today! I bought a twin pack fried breadsticks that were on the counter. I asked the lady at deli "are they made today?" She assured me they were fried today. I took them home was going to have a bite. I have been going to this supermarket since the first day they open because of the convenience location. They were started with minimum choice of grocery and deli food. Nothing were attractive in the beginning except for the short check out line. In the past years, I see their improvement, I mean big improvement gradually. More unique grocery items, more deli food choices, new fancy refrigerators and many more..... The place is very clean and no such typical Chinese supermarket smell. I enjoy hang out and check out their food even I don't have particular thing to buy. Need to mention their deli carry the delicious Chinese lunch box and traditional meat buns. All are my favorite!
