He understood my issues and I always check to see if they have experience with Asian hair before going. Everything turned out great and I really like how my hair grew out from the cut so will be returning. I would've given zero stars if possible. After moving to Jersey, I was looking for a new barber. After reading the reviews, I decided to give Well Founded a shot. I walked in and they took me in to get a haircut. The person who cut my hair seemed extremely inexperienced. It could even have been his first haircut ever. He took more than an hour to cut my hair and he completely messed up my hair. He was so bad that I had to come home and adjust my hair myself. It looked like someone shaved the sides and somehow tried to blend it, you could see multiple lines on the sides where he attempted to blend. My hair was all uneven and imbalanced. I haven't gotten a worse haircut ever in my life. I will not be returning to say the least. read more

Best barbershop I've been to. Most every time I've seen a different barber and they are all great. Plus they are appointment only and take credit cards, which is fantastic. i discovered well founded several years ago just as they opened and sensed almost immediately that this was a special space i left a positive review at the time but thought important to circle back as it been a minute this place, this team has evolved so beautifully over the years. it's an amalgamation of what every and any brand TRYS to be through some simplistic industry formula but in this case, it's completely organic. you see it, you feel it, and yes - you hear it. thank you well founded for existing and look forward to many years ahead - (ps. best fucking cuts in this universe) read more

I used to think you had to go to NYC to get a great cut but once the pandemic hit I stopped commuting and had to find something local in Montclair. Tried a number of spots, settled on Well Founded in 2020, and never looked back. Great place - better then my Manhattan place. Always happy with my cut, the vibe, the conversation, everything. Just a great group of guys running the shop. Always a good sign that my 18 year old son is just as happy as I am getting his hair cut there too. The best shop in the north, straight up!!! I live in West New York with a barber shop every two blocks and I still drive 25-30 mins to Montclair for a cut and it's worth every minute. This place has a modern vibe mix with the "old school" hospitality. You can't walk in or out of here without being being greeted and shown some love. It's also very family friendly and not your typical "boys club" where you feel awkward walking in for the first time and no one acknowledges you (we've ALL been there). Gex has been cutting my hair for the last 7+years and I'd follow him to the great abyss, but I'm also glad that this is wear he hangs his clippers. I came here with my boyfriend on a Saturday afternoon. He came to get a cut with his barber that's been cutting his hair for a long time. The vibe in here was awesome. We were greeted right away and my boyfriend was able to sit in the chair with his barber Jason right away. The music that was playing were all 2000s hip-hop & r&b songs which was just fantastic. The 4 barbers that were there all had someone in their chair and had other appointments walk in also. Everyone was super nice and all conversed with each other. It was a fun atmosphere and the rustic decor (for someone who looks and appreciates well decorated stores and shops) was done nicely. The owner was so nice and fun and was having a great time with everyone and the people he cut! I'd definitely recommend to any guy who's looking to get a quality cut and get well taken care of! read more

These guys are great. I've had haircuts from two or three of them, most recently I've been going to Ian. They're good dudes, the atmosphere is really chill, and they give a solid haircut. They're on par with the better shops in the city for sure. I'd say a step above most of the places in Montclair I've been to. It can be a little hard to get an appointment on the fly though, good for them! Id love for them to add an online reservation system to make that easier. read more

There are so many things to love about Well Founded. The shop itself has a clean modern look to it. The waiting area is cozy and welcoming with Juxtapoz and Thrasher magazine to kill some time while you wait to get lined up. Hell there are even real plants keeping that oxygen clean which is a very nice touch. Across from the waiting area you'll find quality men's grooming products as well as some candles, soaps, wrist wear etc (does all that count as men;s grooming?) Best part about Well Founded though is the team. Nothing but classy gentlemen giving quality cuts. These guys are experienced and take pride in their work so don't think you'll ever leave there without a full experience. Seriously can't wait to pop in again! read more

I was swayed by the reviews here and made an appointment for my teen son to get a low fade. New to the area, my son has previously gotten his hair cut and styled in about 30 minutes. The person who took the appointment call said a barber named James knew what a low fade was (it's not a terribly involved haircut) and would do a good job on my son's hair. Needless to say, he hardly cut his hair at all on top (it was more than 6 inches high when James picked it out), took an hour and 20 minutes and was not finished when I called a halt to this experiment. At that point one of other barbers was trying to "fix it" and instruct James. Told us we should come back to "fix" the haircut. I don't think so. What a waste of time and money. In any case, the reviews here do not reflect what is really going on in this shop. FYI, I toned down this review at my son's request. It was worse than I have told you. read more

This is the best barber shop I've been to for several reasons. Obviously the most important thing is the haircut. Not only do they do an amazing job but they really listen to you when you tell them what you want. Some barbershops in the area just give you the cut they feal like giving you. They take their time and never rush to get the next person in the chair. Also, it's a great atmosphere. Everyone is super friendly, joking around, laughing. Between a good cut and the great surroundings, you walk out feeling good. I've never gotten so many compliments on my beard. From friends, family, complete strangers.
