So I don't know if it's all that fair to give a place 5 stars on a first visit--and me an out-of-towner, but my service was excellent, my barber awesome and the end result exceptional. I'm in the Montclair NJ area for a wedding and the GF (not my fiancée...yet) is off to do her bridal party hair and makeup. She pushes some bills into my hand and says, "...and you get pretty too--find a men's shave shop, my treat." We both knew only the one, Classic Man, right at the corner of Bellville and Fullerton in the tony section of Montclair...and for the record I have *NEVER* had anyone else shave me before, much less straight razor. I made an appointment for 1:30, but was still a couple minutes late as parking in that area is certifiably insane--and this is me as a former Los Angelino talking. But my barber was ready and waiting right when I walked in the door. And this is my prejudices talking, because I expected a manly, 6'+, leather-and-canvas clad moto-biker gang, handlebar moustache, "Mama Didn't Love Me" tattoo...you know the kind. Nope. Karla is a petite 20-something who sat me right down and set me up like the professional she is. Multiple pre-shave unguents, courses of hot towels, hot lather and sure, steady, quick hand with the straight razor. Her smooth, short motions were barely sensible--seriously, a kitten licks harder and rougher. Karla's steady, quick yet unhurried hand had me super smooth and handsomer than ever. I've been to this barbershop twice. The first time was a perfectly fine experience. Nice ambiance, competent barber, and a good haircut. The second time, unfortunately, was a 1-star experience. First, my haircut came out looking pretty strange -- this was partly my fault, since I chose not to communicate the fact that I wasn't satisfied with the cut. That's on me. More problematic is that the barber cut the back of my head with the straight razor and chose not to tell me. I felt some pain behind my ear but figured it was just some irritation. It was only later that my fiancée noticed blood dripping from behind my ear. Mistakes happen, but what you see in the picture merits an apology and a discount, not silence. I really liked my first cut here, but I won't be back. It seems to be too much of a gamble. read more

The guy cutting my hair was either deaf or did it on purpose, i specifically told him "PLEASE DONT CUT OFF TOO MUCH OF MY HAIR" lightly taper the sides and just take off ONE!! 1!!! Again just ONE finger off from the top as i am trying to grow a man bun!!! I walked in with my top hair touching my upper tip of my lip, and left with it touching the middle of my forehead! Ive waited one full year for it to reach that length and he goes a head and cuts it all off. Ive never felt upset about bad haircuts, hair is hair it grows back, but this time it was too much my hair is taking too long to grow and ive always wanted a man bun, this is really upsetting. A haircut at a barbershop should normally take more than 25-30 minutes in my opinion. That doesn't mean you can't cut hair well in a shorter time, but it will feel like your being rushed. This was the case when I visited this barber. It actually was my second visit, just to see if the first time was a fluke. The result of the second time was actually decent, but nothing special. For five stars you want them to spend some time on sideburns, neck and hairlines. Even if they use a machine on the sides and back, it should not feel like they are shaving a sheep. The experience bus just as much important as the result itself. Three stars because the result is alright, but I will definitely try other barbers first. read more

I found this place on Yelp after having been disappointed with other barbershops in my area. I showed up about 15 minutes late because I'm not familiar with the area and parking in Montclair can be a tad tricky (plan for it so you have enough time) but Angela didn't even hesitate to take me as a walk-in. She sat me down, asked me what it was I needed and got right to work. I could tell she wanted to make sure she did her best and she did! She took her time, dotted her i's and crossed her t's. Wish you could see me now! The shop was clean and looked like the pictures on the site. I was even offered espresso. One thing to note is that they only take cash, although they do have an ATM ($1.99 transaction fee). The shop wasn't loud but there was nice mix of the clippers humming and conversations between clients and staff, it was nice. Overall, great environment. I can go on and on but you get the picture! Sheila has cut my hair a handful of times in the past year and she always gives me just what I want and is super friendly. It's just been quality cuts every time I go here. Really clean place, nice and friendly barbers, always smiling, and the towel just wow, that feels great at the end. I usually go here once in a while for a cut. It's been a while since I've been here because I tried out a barber at my hometown and that wasn't a good plan, I just came back here and plan on sticking here.
