Dr DeUgarte saved my life…read more Did I get your attention? Good. It's the truth. I met Dr D in 2014 when I decided to freeze my eggs. I was 36, single, and not even sure if I wanted kids, but I wanted the option to have them if Mr Right ever showed up. She was so compassionate, funny, down to earth and kind that I continued to see her for regular exams. Her all-female staff and spa-like exam rooms turn what is usually an uncomfortable doctor visit into a welcoming, supportive environment. At 38, I casually mentioned a dull, numb pain in my right breast. Even though I was two years away from the recommended age of mammograms and had no family history of breast cancer, Dr D sent me to get a mammogram. Two months after my wedding (Mr Right DID show up!), I was diagnosed with HER2+ Stage 2 breast cancer. Dr D not only called me lot tell me herself, but she told me that she'd already called the top breast cancer surgeon at UCLA and gotten me an appointment for the next day - on the surgeon's day off. Additionally, she'd already told the surgeon that she wanted to do an additional egg retrieval/embryo preservation before I started treatment. I got the news that I had cancer on Tuesday and I started my retrieval meds that Friday. Dr D also reached out on my behalf to non-profits that aid breast cancer patients with the high cost of fertility treatments since my insurance wouldn't cover any of it. For years, Dr D walked alongside me, supporting my women's health needs as well as my spirits. She continued to guide our fertility journey and made recommendations for acupuncturists and non-traditional methods. Of course, she used the most recent data from the scientific fertility world as well. When the time came to face the reality that my body just had been through too much and that we could only have a baby via surrogate, she was caring, nurturing and honest. She guided us through the complicated process during the even more complicated time of covid. I'm thrilled to share that, at 45, I am cancer-free, healthy and the mother of a perfect baby boy, made from one of those eggs we froze back in 2014. Dr D made a speech at our baby shower that still gets people emotional when we talk about it. We are now starting our sibling journey with the same surrogate and with Dr D's guidance and friendship. We know that we would not have our family without Dr D. It didn't happen in the way we planned or hoped that it would, but it happened in a way that will give our children one hell of an origin story! Dr. Lee was always very straightforward in his approach and took the time to thoroughly explain everything during my first visit. He gave me the option to try IUI before moving on to IVF, and while I can now look back and say IUI ultimately wasn't successful for me, I truly appreciated that he presented all of my options, educated me on each path, and allowed me to move through my fertility journey at my own pace. I went through two different insurance plans that advertised IVF coverage, but navigating the actual benefits was a nightmare. Jennie was incredibly patient and helpful throughout the entire process. She took the time to explain my charges, clarify what insurance was actually covering, assist with rebilling when needed, and make sure everything was processed correctly. I wasn't asked for my consent until after it had already been used on one side of my body. I later learned it wasn't even part of the massage service I had booked. I left with significant marks on my legs for days afterward--something I absolutely would have declined had I been given the opportunity to make an informed decision beforehand. To their credit, management acknowledged my concerns and confirmed that this technique is not part of the massage service they offer. However, the resolution offered didn't reflect the seriousness of what happened. When I respectfully explained why I didn't feel it was appropriate and asked them to reconsider, I never received another response. Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is how a business handles them. Unfortunately, what began as an issue with informed consent ended with poor follow-through and communication from management. After years of supporting this business, spending hundreds of dollars on services and gift certificates, I expected much better. I hope they take informed consent more seriously and do a better job standing behind their services when they fall short.
