She fiercely resisted leaving her own home until she was 98.5 and she knew she just wasn't safe. Upon the first day at Morning Star, she met a new very best friend who enriched her life immeasurably. She had not been able to walk for fear of falling and now could motor her walker up and down the hallways so very touched when people (even the maintenance man!) would call out, "Hi Miss Mary! How is your day?" The socialization of going to meals three times a day with others filled her cup and provided something she didn't realize how much she was missing. If she needed medical attention, she had the security of knowing someone would be with her immediately. (She never would press that Lifeline button while at home because she didn't want to inconvenience anyone ... argh!) Lastly, the staff at Morning Star truly rates 10 stars. Megan, the Executive Director, Deanna, the Nursing Director and "zest for life" Lou at the front desk are so very genuine, caring and fun and they set the tone for all who work there. Living at Morning Star completely changed Aunt Mary's daily life in the most positive way allowing the family to enjoy her to the fullest instead of worrying about her every day. This is truly a very very special place.

I can't say enough good things about the staff at Highview. They were and continue to be caring, competent and they go out of their way for their residents. They have helped my dad tremendously with his grief for mom and they take such good care of him. I know he is safe, secure and happy at Highview and I don't have to worry about him or his well being. I would highly recommend Highview in the Woodlands. Terri Maier

Alpine Fireside Health Center

Alpine Fireside Health Center

If your loved one does not have dementia or Alzheimer's, their experience may be a good one, even a…read moregreat one at Alpine Fireside, Rockford, IL., however, my Father's care in the fall/winter of 2023 was absolute negligance. He was admitted into this well cared for facility for short term shelter care, but really only got the shelter, not the care that one with dementia needed. Covid also hit many residence there and my father in late October- November and he was confined into his room for nearly a month even though he was over it. During that time, though he looked and acted normal-brained, he needed prompting for everything and the staff just did not do that and/or was not trained or experienced in memory care enough and/or was not staffed enough. Either way, communication from Administrators from his care plan to care givers should have been passed on and implemented and if it could not be implemented properly, we should have gotten a call to move him out for his own health, safety and well-being. Alpine Fireside did not shower residents during Covid, food was dropped off in his room in styrofoam containers (my father didn't know that there was food inside so he didn't eat and didn't get prompting to drink from the styrofoam cups with lids on). This resulted in dehydration and weakness. His dentures were taken out by staff, not brushed and not put back in his mouth so even if he found his food, he wouldn't be able to chew it, and he didn't have a clue as to how to work the tv. When family was not there to take him out, he literally sat in his room for nearly a month. What was his money paying for? In the evening when family would visit, his food trays from breakfast would often still be there, scaring us to think that if he did discover that there was food in there, that he would could get food poisoning. We reported that. There was one care taker that enjoyed taking care of my father and turning on his favorite music, but her assignment to him was not often enough. During admission and all of the staff meetings that we attended, we communicated with the administrators and asked them that if they felt that they couldn't give my father the basic care that he needed to just admit that and we could transfer him elsewhere. They said they would make some changes to take good care of him. We gave them more opportunity knowing that changing a facility would be hard on my father with dementia. Alpine Fireside provided a nice and clean shelter, food that my father would eat all of if it were on a tray and a drink if it was in an open cup, a "Hello" by name and invited him to activities early on. They did not provide enough staff to watch the unlocked doors for safety or to greet us if we were visiting in the evenings. They did not provide memory care in spite of claiming that they had several staff that were trained in memory care. They did not provide him with proper hygiene or accompanied feeding or hydration or proper attention during quarantine. We took him him out in a hurry December 1st. How do you choose the best place for respite care/nursing care for your dementia loved one unless you talk with others or read reviews? Every facility can change for the good or bad. I sure hope that all of the notes that were taken during meetings with us during my father's stay and especially at the exit meeting has resulted in a positive difference at Alpine Fireside and for their current and future residence. Choose wisely, read recent reviews, talk with those that are exciting the facility of their loved ones and ask them questions. We wished we had.

They go above and beyond. My sister in law was treated there after having a stroke and you couldn't have asked for a better group of care givers. I was lucky enough to work there for several years and saw the level of care and compassion that was given to each and every resident. The facility itself is so home like and the residents are all so happy. Lots of activities happening and the residents are given so many opportunities to connect with the community. If you need rehab or long term care I would definitely make Alpine my first call.
