Wayyy too aggressive. Has you come in for unnecessary appointments and cuts out areas that he says are a concern to test way too many times. Other doctors have confirmed it was not needed. Please please seek a back up opinion before you go in for multiple visits. So you do not have to deal with scars from unnecessary procedures. read more

I went to this place because I had these awfully itchy and painful red bumps on my chin and jaw. Walked in and they saw me relatively quickly. Things started going downhill once the PA saw me however. He walked in (with three med students tailing him), asked me two questions and took a culture of the bumps. However he was talking the whole time and gave me zero room to talk or ask questions of him before he left the room. He leaves but not before telling me that the results would be back in three days and they would call me then to set up a follow up appointment. A week goes by with absolutly not mention of results or phone call. I had to call them to ask for my results and loe and behold I have a staph infection. The entire time my face was in so much pain and they just sat on this information. Do not go here! read more

Billing is a mess. I get repeatedly overcharged for simple procedures and then get multiple bills and text messages to pay them even though they have been paid. Near impossible to get anybody to look into the issue. Front office staff is rude and short and condescending. Billing phone maze gets you after long wait to representative who then listens to your argument and enters the information from the receipt of the PAYMENT already made into the system and then says you are disputing a bill. I am not disputing a bill. I am telling you I paid it and giving you the receipt and reference number and what card was used on what day and I get a rude woman saying she will enter the dispute and they will email me. Do not go to this office. For profit nickel and dime poorly run agency. Almost kafkaesque example of why American profit driven medical/insurance practices fail so many. read more

West Dermatology is an extremely great doctors practice. Dr Nels is an expert in his field. Everytime I've been there he takes his time and checks every part of my skin for signs of damage. Most doctor don't. He explains what he finds and tells me if and what it is and if I should be concerned. He freezes or cuts possible areas of concern. He takes his time and has a lovely bedside manner. I enjoy my visits and know I am taken care of properly. I highly recommend him and this practice. read more

She did not understand my insurance and claimed I had different insurance than my literal card showed I had. Delayed Notification of Abnormal Pathology Report and No Doctor Follow-Up West Dermatology San Clemente prioritizes billing over patient care, which is both inconsiderate and insensitive. While the the bill was processed promptly, I was left uncertain about my pathology results for several days. Today, I called the office, and the 'team' handling lab reports was unavailable, as was the manager. The person who answered took a message for both and said, "Possibly they will call you today if they have time." I asked if the results were posted in the portal but was told they would not be available until the 'team' reviewed them with me. Finally, after my call today, the office contacted me--not the doctor--to report that the pathology results were abnormal and to discuss treatment options. Shockingly, they received the report on June 17th, but I was not notified until today, June 25th, after I called the office. How is it possible that the bill was sent so quickly, but the report was not prioritized? This approach prioritizes financial processes over patient care. I strongly suggest that West Dermatology San Clemente review their priorities, treating patients with compassion and respecting the uncertainty they experience while waiting for pathology reports. I am left with treatment recommendations given by an office staff member instead of the doctor, which is totally unprofessional. read more

I felt very disrespected as an older female. Michael Nelms numbed the area to be treated and returned about 20 minutes later to remove and suture the area. I felt the procedure, which is not usual. I felt burning, and said "Owe, Owe", when he said, "Oh, we won't go there again, it will be done soon". The area treated was just below my left breast, and Michael just carelessly moves my breast to make the area available to photo. He doesn't have a healthy opinion of women. We had a conversation about Taylor Swift, where he said "The Man" song was ridiculous because she is making millions and why is she complaining? I hope he sees this and reconsiders, but I doubt it!! read more

My husband had a large mole removed from his abdomen. The physicians assistant did it and put the smallest size bandaid on it. He is on a blood thinner which is on his record there. On the way home is starting bleeding from the procedure badly, of course with a tiny bandaid on it. He had to return to the doctors office and they cauterized it. His shirt was ruined and they must have not checked his records. Very dangerous He bleed quite a bit and the PA tried to get the blood off his shirt! OMG! This is scary, how unprofessional. read more

The front office people make reservations without scheduling them on the computer. I made an appointment for a routine procedure ahead of time. I decided to stop at the office because I never got a confirmation text. I was told they cannot find my appointment and had to wait long time for them to schedule a new one. The same week of the appointment I was called and told that they were overbooked and they wanted me to reschedule for later time which I told them it did not work for me. I was given a new date and then received a voicemail that I have 2 appointments scheduled for the same day. When I called back I was told i only have one. Such a terrible customer service, none of the receptionists knows what they are doing or how to schedule an appointment. Do not recommend it! read more

Let me tell you why this place doesn't have 5 stars: their billing. We have continued to get new mystery bills for A YEAR!! We have called, are told that the bill was in error and that we are all paid up...and......another bill for the same thing shows up. At this point I have no idea what we've paid to them because for a while we were just paying the bills that were sent to us. My husband and I each had a skin check, I had one shave biopsy and he had 2. We will never go back here again, not because of the service, but because we keep getting duplicate bills. I called and spoke to the office manager, she admitted they made the mistake and didn't bill my insurance. Plan on waiting in the office for at least 40 minutes minimum every time you go and if you are ever 5 min late then they will rudely and smugly turn you away. Literally 5 min late. No joke. They are the most unprofessional office and when I asked them what their policy was on being 5 min late the office manager could not give me an answer. She didn't know what their policies are. Had my first appointment here. Wait time was about 15 minutes in the lobby. Once in the back the wait time was about 15-20 mins more. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. I was able to do an online check-in, which saved time and was very convenient. I was seen by Dr. Michael Nelms. He was very personable and sincere during the appointment. It was obvious that he is used to putting people at ease during, what could be, a stressful doctor's appointment. He photographed any moles or marks which could be of concern and took the time to teach me what to look for in the future. Overall, I had a great experience. Would definitely recommend for anyone needing to get checked out to come here. read more

I was abused by the office staff, as they completely lied to me about my services being covered. I thoroughly checked with Medicare and ALSO was reassured by Kelsea several times that I would have no issue with coverage. She never should have made those assumptions, and firmly encouraged me to continue getting acne treatments. I called Medicare prior to having any of these treatments at West Derm. Medicare AND West Derm said.....verbatim- 'As long as it's necessary, the insurance covers it.' I CONTINUED TO WORK ON ASSURING this coverage, and spoke to Kelsea by phone in addition to in- person discussions about a bill that I might incur. I wanted to be sure before I started, and I was lied to. Later, Kelsea denied assuring me of this coverage. She said she had noted it in my file for each treatment that it was necessary. I went on having treatments for months...NOT CHEAP.. I NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE THESE APPTS had I not been mislead, and now I am left with a bill in the amount of $2057.55 for services I never understood would not be covered. Michelle, the office manager was one of the rudest people I've ever spoken to. I'm on disability, and they have no problem denying the fact that Kelsea, the facialist insisted I continue to be treated for months, 'we'll get it sorted out'. They have no morals. Read through the reviews, and you'll find serious issues with their billing and staff. West Derm NEVER notified me of a single bill..I GOT IT MONTHS LATER, having understood it to be covered. All they care about is money, at the expense of others. It's really disheartening ,and has made me physically ill due to stress. The mistake I made was not reading through all the reviews before I ever came to this place. There are consistent stories on their dysfunctional staff. No business should be allowed to steal money from patients, leading them to believe something that is entirely untrue, never filing any paperwork for it...or notifying the patient/customer. I went to this office because they were an in network provider for my GOOD health insurance company. They collected a copay fromme for $30, then they billed my insurance for my visit, and then they collected $250 cash from me for something they said that was not covered. Basically for 10 minutes with a doctor, they collected about $550. Then 2 years later I get another bill for $13.56. I have never seen such aggressive billing. They basically milk you like a cow once you step into their office. read more

They barely did the annual skin cancer check that I went in for, and they gouged me (financially) for a simple procedure. Over $200 for a simple skin biopsy, AND I was explicitly told that insurance would cover everything. I specifically asked before any action was taken if insurance would cover what they were doing because my family and I are on a single income and was told that yes, it would be covered. A couple weeks later, I got the $200+ bill because guess what? Insurance DIDN'T cover it. And this is actually the second time this has happened, so I won't be going back. Both times I've been here, I've ended up with pretty hefty bills for super simple office visits. I can't afford to go here and get robbed anymore, and I definitely don't appreciate the lack of transparency regarding billing. Also, I got a SECOND bill several weeks later for the SAME appointment. Another $100 for the SAME procedure. I emailed their non-helpful email address and was basically told, "Too bad, pay it." I am never going back here. They are dishonest and in it only for the money, not for helping people at all. Shame on you, West Dermatology. read more

Dr Riley did my skin check and I felt that she didnt do it very thoroughly at all. I went to a different derm for a second opinion shortly after and turns out I had early melanoma right on the front of my shin (which really isnt a hidden spot) with a big scar on my leg now to prove it!
