I'm a little torn leaving a review, but with that being said, I'd like to share my experience. I've been eating at West Lake for a few years now. I've never had an issue, and I always thought the food was great. About a week ago, I placed an order online to be ready in 25 minutes. By the time I got in my car and started heading that way to pick it up, it was sleeting and the roads hadn't been treated. The roads were slick to say the least. After passing by two accidents within half a mile from my house, I decided the safest option was to turn around and head back home. Because even Chinese food wasn't worth risking my life. I called the restaurant explaining the problem and that I wouldn't be able to pick up, and wow was that a mistake. I'd like to make it clear that I understand that my order was already made and it's no longer their problem. The owner on the phone (whom I've interacted with multiple times) was beyond rude. I explained why I couldn't come in and I offered for them to just keep my money since I understood it wasn't their fault. After cutting me off multiple times, she hung up on me. I was obviously charged (again I understand they have to do what they have to do), but I've never felt so belittled by a restaurant, especially one I've supported for years. Very good food, service, and price. I mostly go for the buffet, which if I remember correctly ends at 3pm. There's a fair amount to choose from and it's all pretty good! I believe this is the only buffet in Smithville, so if you're extra hungry give them a try! read more

Updating my post. I know I said I'd never come back but this place is my childhood Chinese restaurant. Today we came in at an odd hour and he food wasn't totally fresh well they asked what we liked and made it ll fresh for us and even brought out a fresh plate to our table of coconut shrimp. The price of this place is more than worth it. Same food and quality as other buffets but for half the price. The woman who runs it is ALWAYS there and works very hard. Seating guests, getting drinks, getting refills, clearing plates, working the register, etc. She's great. Well worth it, in my opinion. read more

Fast food and good Chinese don't usually go together. I'll be honest I prefer quality to quantity as a rule...but when you're hot, tired and hungry, fast is were it is at! The buffet is always ready and the food is always hot. The service is attentive, and kudos to them for knowing more languages than I. There is good variety and good value. If you have kids there are lots of things that they will like, bananas in strawberry jello sauce, banana pudding, hot sugar doughnuts (a secret guilty pleasure of mine), really good quality ice cream,from one of those dreaded soft serve machines. Oh, I guess I forgot, some of you actually feed your kids dinner before dessert. There is the ubiquitous fried rice, white rice, Lo mein (aka spaghetti), chicken on a stick... woohoo! The adults with their more refined palettes can have General Tso,s chicken, Mongolian beef, crispy shrimp, Kung Pao chicken etc. When in Smithville... and you're not looking for a big night on the town (that would mean "Justus Drug Store, A Restaurant "), but good food fast, with a little ethnicity to shake things up, I say go to Westlake Chinese. We eat here pretty often and find it consistently good. The owners are very accommodating . We were there close to closing and more people came in after us. They offered to make anything anyone wanted on the buffet. How nice is that? Maybe too nice! The honey chicken and panko crumb fried shrimp are great. The service could not be any more attentive. We ate at their buffet. The food was hot, well stocked, and tasted very good. There was also a small dessert buffet with ice cream that reminded me of my grandma's homemade soft serve! The staff were very friendly, and did a great job of checking on you for drink refills, empty plates or anything else, yet were not annoying about it and we did not feel rushed. I think we just ate the worst Chinese buffet we've ever had. Dont let that $8 buffet price lure you, Saturday, 8pm not a single patron in the restaurant. That should of told us to turn around and run out the door. The food was stale, cold, and dry. The host kept stirring all the dishes on the buffet table. Nothing taste right and everything was cold to the touch. I didnt even finish one plate. We started to feel concerned about how long the food had been sitting at that dangerous temp so we ate a bowl of wonton chips instead. Even the white rice tasted sour. Like it was sitting in a dirty pot. We felt ill after that. Our stomaches tossed and turned all night. The lay out is weird, its like the buffet tables are in a whole other room away from the seating. Its also very small and limited. Only three short buffets, one with soups and sides. One with rice and chicken and one for desserts and salad bar. Not reccomended. read more

I was drawn to this restaurant by the notation "ethiopean" in the categories tag. The Chinese buffet was as good as I've had anywhere, definately affordable, but there was no sign of "Ethiopean" cuisine. When I tried to ask about it, the owner didn't understand what I was talking about. read more

I ordered some delivery from this restaurant for a birthday dinner last night, and the food was literally inedible. This has never happened to me with Chinese food before. China King, the other Chinese restaurant in Smithville, is pretty bad, but still it's edible when you have the craving for it. The beauty of Chinese food is that even when it's bad it's good, at least usually. But this food was actually all bad. The sesame chicken tasted nothing like sesame chicken. It tasted extremely sugary, kind of like sweet-and-sour chicken, and had sesame seeds sprinkled over the top. All the meats in the dishes had obviously been cooked long before they were delivered and were tough and dry. The rice was dry. It was extremely disappointing for everyone. After a few bites of all the dishes we stopped eating and just ate the birthday cake. We ended up dumping all the food in the trash. Worst of all, the small amount of food I ate actually made me sick afterwards. Don't go here. read more
