This place is ok for picking up basic boating supplies but some of the staff are apathetic and incompetent. They cannot even inflate a fender without messing up the valve and you'd think you were a terrible person for asking them to inflate fenders you're trying to buy! I've had other disappointing experiences there in the past with low knowledge employees but I've also received great help, so it depends on the employee. I can see why the company isn't doing well in general. I'm a retired professional mariner so I know the industry and a bit about maritime matters. They don't even stock a copy of the Colregs?? To me it's a very hit or miss store with some really unmotivated employees. read more

I now use West Marine/Anacortes for the majority of my boating supplies needs. I find that, even compared with Fisheries Supply and Harbor marine - that the prices from West Marine are competitive (or better) - but the service is superior. Rob, Brooke and the rest of the Anacortes team have always treated us fairly and kept us up to date on orders. read more

I should have read my last review....before going back here. This is absolutely the last time I go to this West Marine. So many reasons including they only have have of what you need so you have to go someplace else, but the visit on Saturday, May 1st takes the cake. Headed to West Marine Anacortes at 5:30 pm, after looking to see they closed at 6. I arrived at 5:44 pm and the door was locked, Two people came to the locked door and let a customer out with his bag (not posting one the peoples names). She said we could not enter because there was a DATA problem.......keep in mind it was sunny out on a Saturday night and someone else just purchased stuff. The employee was condescending. I asked for the managers name and she replied with "i am one of them"...She then said "Toodaloo" and closed the door in front of us. I honestly don't understand how this place remains in business. Do yourself a favor and shop someplace else. read more

Ordered antifreeze and fuel stabilizer to winterize my boat. West Marine had all of it ready for me when we arrived and even helped me load in my truck. The young lady that helped me was really great. This is a great store and I'm grateful we have one so close to the marina. This was a great experience and will continue to shop here. read more

I keep my boat in nearby Cap Sante Marina so I've been going here for almost 20 years. When I first started going there they had a lot of people who had decades of experience boating and knew what they were talking about. And, they were well stocked and usually had what I needed. Things have changed dramatically. They seem to have a lot of trouble keeping people. Particularly managers. I think they're on their 3rd manager in the last several years. Also, many of the people working there are very young, and can't possibly have much boating experience and general don't know enough to be helpful. Also, They've had real problems with keeping stock on shelves. For the last several years more often than not they do not have what I need. They always offer to order it. But, I can do that myself either via Amazon, or Fisheries supply in Seattle and have it the next day which is better than what they can do. read more

Fist let me say I am not a big fan of West Marine. I reluctantly frequent their Portland, OR location regularly. I feel that most what they carry costs at least 20% or more than other local suppliers. They do have convenience on their side. The service is generally average at best. This is not the place to ask technical questions I have always felt. The Anacortes store brings a whole new level of service to West Marine. Perhaps it is the small town store thinking that makes a difference. I broke a lug on the end of a battery cable. I thought I was going to have to find a marine electrician to crimp a new lug on the end on a wire. I thought nothing like paying someone an hour service call for 2 minutes work. Enter West Marine. I borrowed a bike from the marina and rode up to West Marine to purchase a cable end. I was going to attempt to solder it on with the little hobby soldering iron that was on the boat. I was sure it was not going to work. I just happened to ask at West Marine it they had a crimper to rent. The clerk said no. He then said the most amazing thing. He said "I'll just loan you one if you only have one lug to crimp". He actually walked back to the shelf and grabbed one out of inventory. He asked to hold my drivers license and off I went. Mind you this was a $200.00 plus tool. I rode back to the marina, crimped the lug on and was back within half an hour. Life was good. I just can't say enough good things about the Anacortes West Marine. This would have NEVER happened in Portland or any other West Marine I have shopped at. THANK YOU West Marine!!! read more

I purchased some West Marine branded rod holders at this shop. On the third day of use the holder fell apart and I lost my rod and reel into the ocean. Then I went and looked at the reviews of this product and realized that this issue of them falling apart and people losing their gear is a known pre-existing issue. West Marine is the Wall Mart of marine supply stores or as another friend said they are the Harbor Freight of marine supply. Most of the stuff they brand is total junk. I knew that but figured with the light use I'd put on the holders just about anything would work. After all I didn't buy the cheapest plastic ones but rather the heavy stainless ones. They cost me $100 but that's only a fraction of what I lost. The rod and reel belonged to my mother who had them for years. They can never be replaced. It's my opinion that if the head office won't look out for the customer than it's the individual shop manager that needs to do that. For that reason I put a lot of the blame for this frustration and financial burden on the store itself. That's why I'm here giving them a low rating. The fact is I'm not going to be able to fish for a while now and will have to replace the gear. You can be sure none of it will be purchased from West Marine. I'm going to have to research and read for hours to figure out what to get. That's the sort of work you wish a shop owner would do for you so that each and every customer doesn't either have to learn the hard way or learn from people who've learned the hard way. I'm always reluctant to buy from West Marine but now I will go out of my way to avoid it. They are convenient because they've done the Wall Mart thing and driven any local chandlery out of business. But there are options. I can and will order on-line from Defender which doesn't brand their own cheap junk but rather sells brands from other companies leaving the manufacturing issues to others. There is also Fisheries Supply, same deal they don't have a cheap Chinese product line but just carry what other people make. We're still back at having to do our own research on products which is disappointing since that would be the point of being a marine hardware store, i.e. you've done the research and only carry things you would put on your own boat. But for me West Marine has pissed me off one too many times and I intend to avoid any purchases that can't be made elsewhere. read more

This review is for the benefit of management at West Marine. I've usually had very good service, as I did today from a young women who took extra time to find parts for me. Then I got to the cashier stand. I had a choice of two cashiers, both of whom looked like they were dealing with returns. I choose door #2 and found myself listening to a long, technical discussion of trolling gear. As I stood listening, wondering if anything would happen, other customers joined the line as the discussion droned on and on. At this point the cashier suggested I might want to try the other line, which had now grown by two customers. It was then announced that a third station had opened, which was immediately filled by the customers who had come in line after me. That now brings us up to four customers who lined up after me but were being waited on first. And that is when my merchandaise was placed on the counter as I walked out the door. We bought over $1000 worth of stuff here in one day, but when trying to return kayak seats that were missing components (and for which we tried to make do, but at $160 each for the seats, it got ridiculous) we started to get the runaround and a strange attempt to keep the sale. We just wanted to return the things and when we tried, we started to get hassled and were told there was nothing wrong with the seats, that they would be fine, but then, they hadn't tried them, as we had. Even after returning the seats, FINALLY (I swear, it was hard to get out of there, as they were loathe to admit they were selling these things without back clips) they then called to try to convince us we were "wrong." I get sales. I've been in their shoes. What irked us most is that it seemed a lot more important to them to deflect their responsibility and somehow blame the customer than to actually provide customer service. It was a very strange and definitely an unpleasant experience, particularly after we'd shelled out a pretty good chunk of change with them. read more
