West Marine - Outdoor Gear Near Me - Chula Vista, California

I was kicked of this store for "looking homeless" and was accused of stealing. When I walked in I was on the phone with my girlfriend and was talking to her about the stuff in the store. The manager followed me around the entire time and stood within 5 feet of me at all times repeatedly asking me questions regarding what I was looking for. I talked about the exact gear that I needed and he immediately referred me to another store without even looking to see if I he had it. He interrupted my phone call and told me I "looked homeless" and that I needed to get out and I can pay for the things that I had in my hand, a few hooks and weights. At that point I was disgusted with his behavior and no longer wanted to do business there. I asked for a real reason why he was doing that and he repeated that I looked homeless and that he was calling the police. There was nothing I could do or say to convince so I decided to leave. West Marine HAS to do something about this it is unacceptable. read more

2023-06-15 Noticed on the receipt the next day that 25% discount as posted wasn't given. Shame on me for not checking on something that was dangled in front of me. The clerk who answered the phone - whose name is also on the receipt - was short with me and said bring in your receipt and hung up. Gee! I wonder if he'll reimburse my gas to drive south 30 miles. Yeah, right! Poor service from one of the ee's, bad location, no parking, minimal inventory. I'm a fan of Shelter Island store and will shop ONLY there if considering West Marine. Constantly, I come to this place and actually purchase their over priced rope. Convenience is the only reason I walk in this store. Every time, I am blessed enough to have someone that cannot manage to use the computer system and just happens to take the frustration out on either me or their coworker. Today I spent close to $200 on rope and had to use two methods of payment due to the lack of knowledge of the system and then, was disrespected when I asked twice for the remaining amount twice because CARL said it in a disgruntled manor under his mask behind the plexiglass. I asked why he was being rude and he turned to me and scoffed. I will now be inconvenienced and rather drive to another store where I am at least respected. Thanks for treating me like crap Carl! This is a small West Marine. They do not have all of the items a regular WM has but it has a variety of the most common items boaters need. We were here picking up an order we had placed. If it's not an item found in the stores, they are happy to have it delivered to a nearby store for you. We had called to double check that our order would be there since we were driving up from Mexico. The manager was called when we got there and she brought up our order. Pretty easy-peasy. We paid and were out the door in no time. I did have a chance to check the clothes- which are usually more than I am willing to pay-but they did have a few on the discount rack. I love the fact West Marine has a store that serves the boating community of Chula Vista. The staff seems very competent and happy to help. If I had any other items to get, I would definitely go back. read more

Worst customer service. Manuel does not care about customers. Argumentative and disrespectful towards customers. Lazy and stops helping at the first sign of difficulty. AVOID THIS LOCATION and go to the Pt Loma store. Manuel is the worst representation of this company. Came in to get a shift cable. He motioned to look in the aisle. All the cables are not labeled. When I came back to him he told me they all were and went back to the cables, well the length is a part of the part number. I, as a person who does not work at a marine store, did not know this. He looked into the computer at the website and found one cable that no stores had in stock and told me to go to another store in El cajon. Joke of a west marine . No inventory . Rude , lazy staff. Called on the phone to check on something and the reply I got was come look. Wrestled up the kids to get in and "look" and they had nothing close to what I asked about . Nobody was in the store shopping and the same guy could barely greet me. Sorry you hate your job chief. Arrived at West Marine looking to price some paint for a boat. The customer service was a bit slow because there was only one person working the store (probably should have been at least two). Once the employee was done with the other customer he came to assist us. I love when people are actually knowledgeable and Can help VS having someone who thinks they know everything but they never answer your question. The people that work there are seriously so sweet!! It's like dealing with your favorite grandparents. They had what we needed (a portable toilet for camping). Ed Told me not to use the vhf radio when its on display for testing. No wonder this place is empty never coming back only came here because i had no choice. Immediately as i walk into the store ed says " we don't have a sale today come back tomorrow ". Worst costumer service ever. First and last time going here. Only two people in the store and myself. Asked Manuel if they had 30 lb flourocarbon because they only had 20 in the isle. He told me they just got shipment but they had to recive it first. He went to the isle and gave me 30lb braided and I told him I needed flouro, so he brought me 30 LB mono and I ask him if he knew the diference and then he just told me that's all we got. So I asked him.if he wouldn't mind checking in the shipment they just got and he told me he could check the box that he was receiving at the cashier. So he dug inside the box and pulled.out a 30 lb mono again. He didnt even bother to check in the back. So I asked him to sell.me 2 fishing licenses and he didn't even know how to turn on the machine. After a few minutes of.him messing around with the machine he told.me that it wasn't working. "You might want to try walmart" Im not a picky person, I usually try to find things for myself and I rarely ask for help unless the product I'm looking for it's not on the isle or shelf. I went in here today 3/26/2020 to buy some bolts and nuts and maybe a few other things and the guy at the register kept asking if I needed help finding things. I repeatedly answered no and he continued to be a DICK! He told me if I got what I needed come on and let's go! I asked if I was being rushed out of here and He said YES! So I told Him He just lost a customer then. He responded with "That's fine, get out "! I asked for His name and He said My name is Carl, I'm the Manager here and I'll take those. I said no You won't and tossed the bolts on the counter and left. Now keep in mind there was only one other customer in the store besides Him and Myself. I understand the social distancing and all, but this guy was just a COMPLETE ASSHOLE! If You're so worried about covid19, You should stay Your Bitch Ass Home! I've shopped here many times and never had an experience where I was never welcomed! This Asshole should be FIRED! I have had nothing but great experiences at this store. Everyone there goes out of their way, this is a specialty store, and everyone / every customer gets fair treatment, advise and I really have grown to see how good these folks really are. I think Kent hit the nail on the head, and these folks work patiently hard. It is amazing if one slows down, and waits and I've never seen them not give someone equal time and then some appropriately. I don't mind waiting if I have a question because I know it is worth the wait. Ed is awesome as well as the rest of the folks who work there. I've had nothing but good experiences with this store. Very helpful staff that work patiently hard, even though other customers are pushy, in a hurry and act like this is some Walmart. Specialty marine supply stores require knowledgable people with experience. This store has it and if they don't they will find someone who does. I just can't see yelp having one poor review of this store that has served me and my friends well for over a decade. Sometimes you have to just slow down, let it breath and you will get exactly what you want/need. In ten minutes you'll forget all about any inconvenience that you may perceive. read more
