Plus, the Livingston Public Library is also part of BCCLS (sounds like "buckles"), which stands for the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. Within the BCCLS network, you can borrow books, media, and other lendable materials from any of the libraries in the system as long as you're a resident from one of the participating libraries' municipalities. This is a nice library with lots of natural light pouring into the rooms. It's a great resource for the nearby community, plus there are some interesting displays about local town history (Rikers Art Hill and hometown, Nobel Laureate Roger Yonchien Tsien (錢永健).

So if a book is out the librian will find out if another library a part of the program has it and have it held for you. The bottom floor has a very inviting children and young reader room full of things to check out and upstairs in the main library are everything else. Beyond books - editorials, magazines, newspapers and computers to use. What is great is the DVD wall. Hundreds of alphabetically ordered DVD movies are in the library ready to be checked out, so if Netflix and Redbox let you down for a movie a decade or so old you want to watch, you may find it here, for FREE! Just don't forget your library card.

You need to check the monthly calendar to see what they have planned each week. The staff, as well as outside groups such as Seton Hall students, do story time several times throughout the week for various age groups. They bring in animal specialists, musical guests, and a host of other special activities. I've also asked the reference librarians for help going research on the history of the town and local community, and they were so helpful. They even contacted me when they uncovered some information days after I left. I am so impressed with their dedication, resourcefulness, and commitment to help patrons. If you like browsing around, there are probably better, more well stocked, newer libraries (like Montclair) but since the libraries are so interconnected, it's really easy to request what you want and come to receive when notified. I do think the parking can be annoying because it's either meter or wait until after 6 when the meters are free. This is unusual in my experience to not have free parking at a library, so it is a knock against it, but overall I like this place so I lean more towards a 4.

Entrance was $15 for me and free for my son. We all know of Edison and the lightbulb, but touring his research laboratory and learning about so many of his additional inventions and patents was fascinating. It's a self guided tour with many signs giving plenty of information, plus hands on areas where kids can experiment with sound or blueprints, for example. I particularly enjoyed the park ranger explaining and demonstrating music on one of the many phonographs in one room. There was also a volunteer in the Black Maria (film production studio) explaining how the building worked. Great value, very educational and inspirational, highly recommend to other history buffs out there.

It is very quiet here, lacking the various mentally ill individuals who hang out at the main library and can be very loud and distracting, or disturbing.. The internet speed on the computers here is reasonably fast, as is the wifi, unlike at the main branch where both are so slow as to often be useless. This is a pleasant place to hang out and read or use the computers. Staff from the main library work here also, some of whom are quite friendly and helpful, I like to chat with the familiar faces.

We especially enjoyed the room dedicated to Philip Roth, one of Newark's most famous former residents, who has written compellingly on his upbringing.
