Upon arrival back home I settled in to eat some ice cream from their freezer. Keep in mind, I had gotten in jsut before closing, so the store is closed as I settled down and am now writing this review. And as I start in on my ice cream it has a strange texture- very crystalized and freezer burnt. I look at the date on the bottom: December 13 2023. This is expired by Many Months over the date. I don't know yet if I will bother confronting the shop in the morning, but this was an extremely disappointing visit especially as the 2 small treats I picked up cost nearly 16 dollars.

As an example, I'd mentioned to my cashier that I was fond of kombucha, and she took me to the two different locations in the store that have two different kinds of kombucha. She didn't just say, "we may have that", she knew the inventory, locaiton, and was thoughtful enough to take me directly to them. Again, this is at a convenience store? There is also an entire freezer of Dippin' Dots! If you're not familiar with these, they are tiny spheres of ice cream that are created by dripping tiny drops of ice cream into a cryogenic chamber so that they're instantly frozen, and this instant freezing doesn't allow ice crystals to form in the ice cream. They're pretty amazing, and they're even more elusive. Now I can get them any time I want! If you're in the neighborhood, or even if you're not, I can't recommend this location highly enough!

On to the details of my visit: I'd been looking forward to a solid local market and this one had been on my radar for a while. Unfortunately this wasn't it. It felt more like a typical Oregon roadside tourist trap with the standard "Made in Oregon" stale chocolates, granola, sweets, etc. The produce sections was relatively tiny and only about half of it looked really good. The frozen meat sections was almost entirely out of red meat, there was a tiny amount of fish and then frozen chicken too. However, the prices are tourist gift shop too. Think $10/lb for asparagus, $18/lb for chicken thighs, $10 for a dozen chicken eggs, $14/lb for ground beef, etc. I eventually just looked through their baked goods and noted the bread was date stamped that it was baked 2 days prior and priced at for a $14 loaf of sourdough. My favorite Portland bakeries all offer freshly baked (as in that same day) sourdough and other loaves for $9-$12. Anyhow, I ended up choosing some local brownies and which looked good but ended up being chalky, dry and clearly several days old. I'd love to see a larger selection of prepared foods to enjoy on the pretty back patio too. They just had a bunch of those pre-packaged sandos & wraps like one finds in an airport. Why not add a little pizza oven and or grill for weekends? Anyhow, there's much potential with such a pretty place like this one but it isnt quite there enough for me to make the 30min drive from Portland again.

When inside the large red shop, so many options of local food, beverage & handcrafted items for sale: cookies, pastries, candy, honey, fresh milk, meat, wine, coffee, sandwiches, chips & so much more. Once done wandering thru or shopping, there is the expansive views out back where one can picnic on the grass, sip some beverages or munch on goodies purchased inside. Also available are table & chairs on the side of the market structure that allows for looping back inside or towards the front parking lot. The grounds are nicely manicured with a variety of beautiful specimen plants to be in awe of. Hopefully you'll go with intent to slow down, relax, linger & enjoy this jewel of a place to visit. WOWWW are we glad. Not only did they have balut they had an array of groceries I would need for nearly any Vietnamese dish I want. A one stop shop! They had meat, veggies (pre shedded papaya), snacks, and all the things. Will be back often!
